It is so strange that the new age and progressive movements have so many similarities. The idea of not needing biblical redemption but only needing to be awakened to see that you are already all that Christ is or are already born from above is a theme in the new age influenced sector as well as the progressive sector. They sometimes seem like one crowd and sometimes seem like two crowds heading toward the same destination via different roads.

True. But look at the core of both movements. They both deny the depravity of man. They both espouse the goodness of man at his core. Thus, salvation is a freeing of the "true self" from the "false self," of discovering the divine spark within. They are both a denial of Genesis 5:3.

Carol Berubee - how was Adam created at his core? Maybe the fall is the arc of all people and not the generational permanent ink blot on humanity ever since. And more to the this point, I think it’s only getting more difficult to actually defend that Adam and Eve were actual real people.

No matter who we appreciate, it's so important to be in the Word frequently and to be discerning. Peter was not the actual rock Christ built His church on. The faith that Peter proclaimed that Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah, as revealed to him from the Holy Spirit, is the rock Christ builds His Church upon. Just a clarification because the Catholic church holds Peter as that rock, but it is the statement Peter made, not Peter himself, that is the foundation of the Church.

I think about all the ladies who come in without a home church or who have a watered down understanding of the gospel. We need to be bold enough to take the opportunity to be direct about the gospel - even if it’s just a couple minutes at the end with a clear Christ-centered message. Should we waste our opportunity?

@@Simply4MEnUS I’ve been studying Jungian Typology, which is the root origin of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), for years now. Carl Jung, who created the Psychological Types, had a very shady spiritual past, and the way how all the Jungian Typology models are used by most aren’t God-focused at all but rather self-focused, and anything that distracts you from God isn’t good. Jungian Typology and Enneagram both have bad origins and both can be used sinfully. Anything that came from the world and not from God can be used sinfully. But I think this is truer for Enneagram than it is for Jungian Typology. Carl Jung was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology, so at the very least Jungian Typology had a start in a scientific field. Furthermore the theory of Typology has evolved so much that no longer does Carl Jung’s strange spiritual background seem to be even a little apparent in all the many different models, such as MBTI, Objective Personality, Socionics, etc. These current revisions of Typology all strive towards a more accurate, scientific view of personality. One such attempt is the gradual abandonment of self-typing, self assessments & tests. These are being replaced by typing sessions where others, especially those who have been trained to type, type you which eliminates the subjective bias that you have of yourself. Much better than reading a personality profile online by yourself and determining whether or not it sounds like you. Meanwhile Enneagram didn’t start from a scientific field nor does it seem to strive towards any scientific accuracy, and because it is so unscientific and subjective it just seems as spiritually corrupt as Astrology. But when it comes to how spiritually corrupt Jungian Typology is, it’s about as corrupt as the overall field of Psychology, more or less. It can be either a bad or a good tool, depending on how you use it. I personally use to describe the behavioral patterns that we as humans all seem to share with one another, but I can live without it. God is ultimately more important.

The self is fallen, corrupted by the fall of Adam, and is mixed w the serpentine rebellious nature. Jesus in Matthew 18 rebuked Peter as Satan for setting his mind on the things of man, earthly, not on the things of God. Then He said whoever wants to follow Me he must DENY HIMSELF, take up his cross (die to the self) and follow Me. Earlier He had said you need loose your life in this age in order to gain it in the coming age (after the resurrection, the millennial kingdom). Paul's struggle w his fallen nature in Romans 7 is very revealing.

Without defending the Enneagram at all, I think the fact of its rapid spread speaks to the fact that there is a deficit in the evangelical church when it comes to self-understanding. Everyone I know who has gotten into the Enneagram has felt the need to understand themselves better so that they can be more loving and feel less unfocused shame. I think the best way to eliminate the Enneagram from churches is to satisfy this need in a more nuanced way. The church needs to confront the mystery of what it means to experience God's love for us as individuals. We must overcome this mistrust of serious introspection. The church can be the easiest place in the world to hide our darkness because it gives us such a distinct set of behaviors defined as righteousness. If the church was properly encouraging and facilitating self-knowledge, people would be more authentic and more likely to grow in faith.

Respectfully, in my experience most people in evangelical churches are not born again, (I said the prayer, so I’m good!) hence the need to dodge guilt and condemnation. Jesus Christ sets us free from condemnation and guilt. That is what happens at the cross. We need less false preaching and more true gospel message. His Holy Spirit begins transforming us and telling us who we are. Zero need to be introspective-we follow Christ and He transforms us. This is why we don’t see anywhere in scripture that we should be informed by what we find when we “look within”.
@MourningTalkShow
@MourningTalkShow 4 жыл бұрын
Christ In Common I can’t remember anyone actually saying “out loud” that we have zero need for introspection under Christ. It is hard to even know where to begin with a statement like that. On a personal level I’ve never known any strong and loving Christians who didn’t have insights about introspection. I can believe that true introspection is done by grace, but not that no introspection is needed. As for scripture, Romans 12:1-8 comes to mind. It entreats is to be transformed by the renewing of our minds and then invites us to test and approve God’s pleasing and perfect will. I don’t see how you could argue that this statement can’t apply to our internal state. Then comes the verses about the body with different parts. We must learn about ourselves to know and refine our function. I hope that people will see your statement as a cautionary tale. People who don’t try to understand themselves and wait for pure revelation and intervention from the spirit with no personal effort could easily become dangerous in the kingdom.

The church is letting the devil in when pastors abuse children, when they use control and lord it over people, when we sin in any way... You can be sure, this is of the devil and letting the devil in. The church has a horrendous history of this let alone the crusades and more recently the amount of abuse happening under the church's control. This is a history of letting the occult in and it's within Christianity. So I would want be careful to label everything that follows as not good, just because there is a history of it being not good. Anything good that comes from something is from God, because God is all good, and anything evil that comes from something is from the devil... Whether you call it the ennegram or Christianity. I eat halal meat in the ME with my Muslim brothers and sisters that has been prayed over...I have no fear because of its history. Jesus is well aware and well above the history of something. And we can eat and take the good God has given us in things without fear and without giving the devil more credit than he's worth. Yoga has Eastern mysticism as it's history, but that doesn't mean our kids don't do a fair number of the exercises regularly as part of their physical education warm ups and stretches, because they happen to be particularly good for the body. We don't live in a black and white world and Jesus was definitely not black and white in his thinking, unlike the Pharisees. He was well able to take the good from the corn in the fields on a Sunday even though it was against his religion and laws. But [this program/theory] also goes further and tells me ‘everything’ about me individually and even tells me my next steps in personal development. I was pretty into the enneagram about a year ago, then I did some digging into its origins after I heard Doreen Virtue make some passing comments on it, and wow. I was shocked how every one of my Christian friends responded when I presented the truth to them. Not ONE of them renounced it with me. Some chose to remain in ignorance and some chose to defend it. It was pretty shocking and really put me on my guard.

Same! I thought it was just a personality test. And in fact the church I used to be work for used things like Meyers Briggs to place you in specific ministry. So I dodnt think deeply about it. And then I started to. And what was uncovered is alarming to say the least. I repented. And then it occured to me that personality tests in general put too much focus in ourselves. And even if they have no foundation in the occult they can still be idolatrous. And we dont actually need them. We need to stop putting so much emphasis on who we are and spend more time on who Christ is.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKLLZYuKebuVpcU From this video we see how satan enters the church as a savage wolf giving no quarter to the flock or allowing his authority to be questioned. Satan's american deception is outlined in "Star Trek", the enneagram is a tool of the ennead, the 9 gods of egypt, hence the 9 psychological constructs. The 9 were contacted through PROJECT STAR GATE, the military remote viewing project, the ennead conjoined MK Ultra, and BLUE BIRD, in it's assault on the american people. Stanford Research Institute is a major CIA player. Andrijah Puharick, if I remember right, was the liason to seances conducted with Gene Roddenberry for the enneads creation of STAR TREK, and I think George Lucas was also involved. STAR TREK outlines the american takeover: 1. US enterprise 5 year mission 2. But why they gotta be black? Racism hides a multitude of covert operations. The goal a united federation of planets among foreign gods. Any body want to get high and watch star trek? Man that's hypnotic. COLD READING en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_reading The church should learn cold reading for 2 reasons: 1.prevent deception, astrology, "word of knowledge", etc. 2. To evaluate truth in experience, the NT does not apply cold reading evangelism. Compare John Macarthur and Kenneth Copeland. PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATIONS in GUERILLA WARFARE en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_Operations_in_Guerrilla_Warfare CLEARLY shows the government is infiltrating the church for military purposes. This interview inspired me to reach out to Ian Morgan Croc for an interview to get a different perspective on this. his origin and history of the enneagram is completely OPPOSITE of what's being discussed here. I've read a good chunk of "The Road Back To You" and it's filled with scripture, John Calvin quotes and seems to be coloring within the lines of Biblical orthodoxy. He repeatedly says don't talk the enneagram too literal and he sees it as a road to get closer to God... ultimately through growing in self awareness, empathy and seeing your own blind spots/motivations.

This requires prayer and discernment. Remember, no one introducing any destructive heresy into Churches has EVER said “this is a heresy.” They will always couch it in innocent, Biblical sounding phrases and with what seems like the purest of motives. However, it takes a bit of critical thinking skills as well to recognize when something just doesn’t really make sense. The way to grow closer to God is the learn all we can about GOD. Not ourselves. That doesn’t ever cause us to grow closer to God. When we DO learn more about God, we naturally will learn more about our own shortcomings, and will naturally grow in love for those other people God loves. But that never happens by focusing on ourselves. To give an illustration, the Secret Service is charged with investigating counterfeiting schemes. How do they train their experts? By studying counterfeit currency? No. By studying the real thing, getting to know it so well that it becomes easy to spot a counterfeit bill. Our Christian walk is really supposed to work the same way. It is not a pick-ourselves-up-by-our-own-bootstraps, willing ourselves to change and grow more like God. That is doomed to fail. We cannot ever change ourselves, and in reality, we are only too good at finding ways to excuse our mistakes and failures we don’t forgive or excuse in other people. We judge ourselves by our motive, others by their actions. When we focus on ourselves in some attempt to grow closer to God, we will only tend to become self-centered and self-focused.

Thanks Alisa and Marcia! I was talking to a friend about a year ago, and we both were having a discussion about why personality tests (Meyers-Briggs, Enneagrams, etc.) and our results in them ALWAYS ALWAYS felt like they fell short. We kept digging and digging into why that might be and came to the realization that the only things these personality tests do is make us try to "find ourselves within ourselves" when scripture says the opposite: "Find God and in Him find who you are meant to be." As fallen people, if we keep looking within, we'll only find more fallenness and brokenness. That's why we've always felt unfulfilled by them. Thanks for this discussion!

I am Christian and was a Psychology major with specific interest in concepts of self and personality typing and have recently encountered the Enneagram and found it very helpful. But I also am interested in finding out more about its...odd origins and agree that Richard Rohr is on the other side of the "line" when it comes to Christian doctrine. I consider myself conservative, but also think that - contrary to what Marca said that it is sensible to allow experience to at least contribute to our understanding of God, because it is information about reality (taken with the appropriate grain of salt for anecdotal experience and biases of course). But the one thing I am 100% comfortable saying is I totally agree with your comment. I know I need more time in Scripture and prayer and to be filled with God and not myself. "He must increase and I must decrease". We must die to self in order to find life.

The point of personality tests can be to just understand yourself better- AS A FALLEN IMAGE BEARER. How else are you gonna preach the Gospel to yourself? How else are you going to understand where your friends are coming from? Would u throw out the 5 languages of love because someone told you “God is the source of all REAL love”? Ummm yeah He is but we also can show love in different ways so others receive it better.

I have yet to listen to this podcast. My gut reaction is to say something crass, like “I think you have that confused with”pentagram.” But before I “put my foot down” on that statement, I want to listen to the podcast. Also, I’m pretty certain that that “scripture” quoted above (in the original comment) is not a scripture. Although the Bible does say that he who loses his life for the sake of Jesus will find it. Maybe it’s some funky translation of that scripture. But I don’t think I quoted that exactly myself though either here. But is that the scripture that the quote in the original comment is trying to cite? Okay I am not God, so there is possibility I could be wrong. But right off hand, I don’t see that recognizing, studying, or noticing differing and unique personality traits - IN & OF ITSELF - is wrong or incompatible with God our Creator. Yes there are certain dangers inherent (POTENTIALLY), such as of pigeon-holing people. I agree there. Or, sometimes even psychologists have become traitorous to the people they are supposed to help by working for those with agendas of manipulating people to various ends. Whereas Moses said, “Let my people go.” Anyway, even a good tool can be used for evil agendas, such as to manipulate people or populations. I’ve often noticed that even wisdom could possibly be used as a sort of “how-to manual” for those with various predatory purposes. And of course we should not be focusing on ourselves or humans more than on God. I do know that in life we sometimes come across people with some very serious personality hang-ups, and these people can be very difficult to be around or to deal with. If recognizing their differing or unique personality traits is of help in understanding where they are coming from - then so far, I am not against personality tests. Personalities should not be confused with the Holy Spirit, of course, and things like that. Neither should intellectualism or imagination, etc. Anyway I now plan on listening to the podcast and will see if I agree with it. For the moment, I am wondering if being against it (these”grams”) is just more (same old, same old) stamping out of the unique individualism that God created in us. Of course I had better pray first for the wisdom of God. And then listen to the podcast. If I find or recognize that I am wrong, I will do my best to get back in here and point it out.

I went down the ennegram rabbit hole about a year ago, after seeing it appear in several "christian" sources. What was so compelling is that it appeared accurate. It seemed to really nail me down, so to speak. But as I thought about it, it seemed more like a psychological test. Like if you asked someone 100 questions about themselves, thoughts and reactions you could probably get pretty close to an accurate portrait of their personality. Somewhat like a questionnaire also determines what mental disorder you "have." Everyone with bipolar can be pretty similar, with pretty similar weaknesses & even life experiences, even strengths. PTSD, Depression, ect. They're gonna nail you down with a series of questions. It's basically the "christian" (not really) cross between the zodiac & psychology. It is NOT of God. It's is Gnostic & Mystic Christianity. Which is NOT of Christ.

It didn’t sit well with me but I couldn’t articulate why. Now I understand that it’s because this test attempts to define our identity and as soon as we agree with that instead of who God says we are, we’ve come into agreement with man’s words instead of God’s word over our lives. Amen. Via _false_ experiences, though, not _true experiences_ of God. When we are convicted of our sin, and convicted of the truth of the Gospel, that is a true experience of God. We are also convicted of his holiness, truth and love. We are convicted of the truth if the Gospel, by the Holy Spirit. That is a true experience of God. When we experience the comfort of the Comforter, that is a true experience of God. If we have no experiential comfort of God, then Jesus would not have called the Spirit of God, the Comforter, and He also wouldn't have said that when He came, He would show the things of Jesus to us. He would not have said that we "hear His voice" in at least three places in the New Testament, John 5, John 10, and Revelation 3, and there is also "today, if you hear His voice, harden not your heart". If there was no experience of spiritually hearing, there would be nothing to use to tell us not to harden our hearts, especially at that time of _hearing._ If it wasn't experienced, there would be no noticable, discernible "hearing" his "voice", to remind us not to harden our hearts. It's the very fact that we have heard his spiritual voice, that we are so horrified by false manifestations, not of the true Holy Spirit.

It is one of the many false teachings 'it is not your fault' & there in lays the attraction, we would rather believe that something else is the cause of our sin's then to admit we made a personal choice & do the often time painful work of repentance. Guilt can be overbearing it is much easier to blame something, anything else like it was the alignment of the sun, the moon, my personality, my wife, my husband, the way I was raised etc. to say It is the blame game Adam & Eve played.

This is no shade to Marcia, she provided good information here, but something regularly puzzles me about church culture and apologetics, which is: why is our goal or first thought to have another person tell us what to think about a subject, instead of going to God, His Word and letting His Holy Spirit speak to us about that thing? Every sermon or video seems to start and end with "buy my book so I can tell you what to think about this". I think we have a huge problem in the church if we aren't able to discern for ourselves with the help of the Holy Spirit, or study what the scriptures say and instead look for it to be gift wrapped and handed to us by someone else.

I just happened to stumble upon this video and want to thank you so much for making it. I have long been concerned about the enneagram and its increasing popularity among Christians. As I watched the video a few things were mentioned that I recalled being mentioned by the Bible College that I formerly attended ("spiritual guide/guidance" for one). I became suspicious that they were probably embracing the enneagram as well, so I did a quick search on the enneagram and the name of the college. Sure enough, they had a seminar teaching the enneagram. The speaker happened to be the same professor who I have been concerned about for years (so much so that I contacted the school about it) who has been bringing in contemplative practices and progressive/Marxist thinking into the school. I watched a free webinar on the enneagram that this professor gave and was blown away at how what he was saying mirrored what you ladies discuss in this video. He talked about how deep at our cores we are holy and we are all trying to get back to that, but that we have built up these defense mechanisms because of the things that have happened to us in life. He was pointing to certain passages of scripture and saying, "that's the enneagram!" He talked about the enneagram being an "entry point" to God. I did a little more research and found that Richard Rohr has given a favorable review of this professor's new book, Between Two Trees: Our Transformation from Death to Life. I also noticed the school now uses the phrase "Christian tradition" in the description of some of their classes. It is absolutely frightening how deception enters into the church and Christian institutions, and all it takes is ONE person. Again, Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this video.

I understand the love for good pastors, and the respect people give them. We shouldn't just leave a church because they teach something wrong. For example the enneagram. What we should do is have the guts, and spine to talk with them, or anyone who teaches anything wrong, and correct, or call them out. Respect, and unity doesn't mean blindly agreeing with someone. Biblically that isn't even love. That is what God would describe as an enemy. Someone who kisses your cheek instead of someone who rebukes you because they love you.

I mean, personally I never went further than the test. I definitely identified with so much of my number/profile, probably about 90% of it if not more. but for me it was just reaffirming that without Jesus I’m soooooo screwed... it just reaffirmed that without God, the mind is insanity, especially my kind of mind, which is manic in how it tries to process everything all at once. ultimately, it was just a dossier on my mind as it is in this fallen world but also revelatory on the way that it is a bit of a gift. all I know is I don’t identify with it so far as to identify with it over my identity in God. so yes proceed with caution and do not, in my opinion, take it further than the test - which, from a Christian perspective, is really just a diagnosis on how sinful the mind is in its fallen state.

Their point is that the test itself was channeled by demons and has no objective truth nor innocence in it (in the test itself, so encourage others not to take it, even as a personality test)- and not to trust our experience; “our hearts are deceitful above all else...”

Even the demons know who Jesus is... Even bad people can produce good things because all good things come from God. There's a lot of black and white thinking in the church and fear. We all have good and bad in us, we can all use things in good and bad ways. Missionaries eat demon prayed over meat every day in the Muslim world because every bit of halal meat has been prayed over. I think we underestimate the power of Jesus over all things. Perfect love casts out fear. We can discern through Jesus. Daily life is a constant discerning and being in the world, but itsa mark of how strong our identity is as to whether we can go with the outsmarts and prostitute's, like Jesus without being corrupted our whether our identity is just too weak to be able to handle it.

The accuracy is based on the Barnum Effect and confirmation bias. You may think it was 90% accurate, but the Dunning-Kruger Effect suggests we don't necessarily know ourselves as well as we think. If God calls something, like fortune telling and divination, an abomination, it should be avoided. If social science experts call typologies fortune telling and divination, maybe we oughta listen to them and not people writing books for money?

Thankyou so much for having Marcia explain the truth about the Enneagram. I bought the book by Don & Joy Veinot and Marcia. I have known them all for many years. I currently work at Colorado Christian University located in Lakewood Colorado which borders Denver to the West. The Enneagram is being used for the faculty, staff and students. I think this is a huge problem. I would like to somehow get this video sent to the university. They are using the Book, The Road Back to You.

My church has really started pushing this lately with staff and now the volunteers. I tried to take it a couple of times but it made me uneasy so I stopped and never completed. I have been feeling for a while the Holy Spirit telling me it was time to find a new church. After watching this and the responses I have gotten from staff when I questioned it, as well as some biblical inaccuracy getting more often, I feel I have confirmation on moving forward in finding a new church home. Thank you so much for posting this!

Alisa, I love your channel and feel that it is timely and God inspired given all that is happening. But I was impressed by the irony of you talking about the ability for anyone to be deceived and correctly citing Galatians where Peter is sucked into the Judaizers circumcision requirement. But then, you go on to say "Peter, the Rock that Jesus built His church upon". Are you stating this as your doctrinal stance? Are you a Catholic? Please clarify this point, it is important as it hints at support for papal succession and Roman Catholic authority.

I heard that, too, and debated whether to say anything about it! This is the briefest explanation I could come up with: Jesus called Simon bar Jona, "Petros", and He said that upon this rock, "Petra", He would build His church. I believe that Petros is masculine and Petra is feminine, but it has been awhile since I read about it. If Jesus meant that Peter, _Petros,_ was the rock upon which He would build His church, why refer to him as _Petra?_ It seems obvious that He meant "rock" in a different sense than _Petros,_ or He wouldn't have changed it to _Petra._ What I was told was that _Petros_ means a pebble or small stone, like you hold in your hand and throw, and that _Petra_ was a big stone, like a stone ledge, or the bedrock. As a feminine, it would probably be the "motherlode" or "mother rock", from which the little, "Petros" stones come.

This is a very weak critique. The biggest problem with the Enneagram is the fact that it is thoroughly rooted in the occult, and assumes an occult worldview, mentality and ethos. The speakers didn't cite a single biblical passages against the occult. It is impossible to separate the occult from the Enneagram, because the occult is its underlying worldview, philosophy and presupposition. And I'm concerned that when Christians confront their pastors on this, that they are not adequately stressing how occult this thing is. The Bible totally condemns all occultic involvement. Whether the Enneagram works or not is irrelevant. The biggest problem is that it is totally occultic. God absolutely forbids Christians dabbling in this realm. The podcast on the Enneagram with Craig Hawkins is much better, because he stresses the occultic aspect of this thing. Read Deuteronomy 18:9-14,and read Hawkins book 'Witchcraft: Exploring The World of Wicca."

I am rethinking my views on the Enneagram and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Ms. Childers you are performing an amazing service. Excellent interview! We've had a few decades of "me-centered" teaching in public education, psychology, etc. (think: the self-esteem movement), so seeing books like _Girl, Wash Your Face_ having an impact on Christianity is no surprise. (Hollis' book is why I wrote a devotional book -- to get our focus off of ourselves.) You have to look high and low to find just a few Christians who have not bought in to the self-esteem mentality to some degree. So, it's no surprise that the Enneagram, which is thoroughly self-centered, is now so popular. Long before the Enneagram entered the Church, I was warning about personality tests and psychology being used in the local churches for the same reasons. It's all self-centered. As Marcia said, we are being conformed to the image of Christ, so what use is a personality test? I would go further and add that all of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are in God (Colossians 2:3), not self, and not psychology or personality tests.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKLLZYuKebuVpcU From this video we see how satan enters the church as a savage wolf giving no quarter to the flock or allowing his authority to be questioned. Roman Catholic, Jacob Tiberius Church, james t kirk 3.second in command, spock, Israel, high priest live long and prosper. 4.communications, black african uhura 5.pilots, Russia and asia, chekov and sulu 6.protestant, county doctor, the real mcoy 7.the engineer, scottish scotty. 8.the cling ons, klingons, to Christ, intolerant, unpeaceful, stuck in the old ways. Crips, Bloods, BGD, KKK, Aryans, on the streets protecting the hood.

Christina: It seems that way but that’s not the case. Each person is unique and cannot be put into a box. This kind of stuff is designed as a means of mentalism to keep people in spiritual bondage. The very nature of it contradicts Scripture (God’s Word). It’s a way to dismiss the idea of free will as well as a means to control other people and violate their free will. How can I be held accountable for anything if I say that’s it’s my natural personality to be a certain way? That’s in itself contradicts the Bible because in order for someone to receive Jesus they must first profess their belief in Him on their own free will. After, they just repent. How can they repent for sins if they believe these sins are just part of their contrived personality traits as documented by these goofy tests? See what I mean? It’s all bunk.

Part of the problem is that Evangelical Christianity is not spiritual; it is an ideology. It is transactional. You answer an altar call, say the sinner's prayer and boom, that's it. That is one reason there is a "New Age" in the first place. People have no awareness or discernment of spirit and will be dazzled by anything. Christianity on the other hand has a deep and rich spiritual legacy. The monastic movement from the Desert Fathers to Thomas Merton, which Evangelicals reject, is in fact essential Christianity. We are to discern spirits, not reject all of them wholesale. That is the work of the church and tradition. It's not just "me and muh Bible."

Alisa, I have learned a lot about Progressive Christianity from your podcast and this episode is no exception. However, your statement that the apostle Peter “was the rock that Jesus built His church on” is a misinterpretation of that scripture. Jesus ask Peter who do you say I am. Peter said, “you are the Christ the son of the living God”. It is on that foundational rock that Christ built His church…not Peter.
