Recently, a progressive Christian meme made the rounds that stated 22 beliefs about God, Christians, the nature of heaven and hell, and the exclusivity of Christianity. I asked Mike Winger to join me to help us think through these statements and analyze them through a biblical lens. Here's part 2!

I just think the name of “Progressive Christianity” is funny😂😂 Because God is like, “I’m the same yesterday, today, tomorrow, and forever” And the “progressive” definition is: happening or developing gradually or in stages; proceeding step by step. It’s like they want an upgraded version of God and they can’t find Him in the Bible so they just assume stuff😂

Regarding #17: You are in Yosemite above the waterfalls, admiring the river going over the cliff. There's a little fence along the bank of the river and a sign that says, "Do not cross the fence!" You decide to step over the fence anyway because you want to go swimming in the river. You step in the water and are swept away, and are heading straight for the cliff. Jesus happens to be nearby and sees this happening to you. He quickly fells a tree that lodges against a rock in the middle of the river, in order to intercept you and rescue you. He goes along the tree trunk to stretch out his hand and says, "Quick! Give me your hand or you'll die!" to which you respond, "I don't respond to threats." You swim around the tree trunk and head over the waterfall to your doom.

Progressive Christians tend to focus on one aspect of God that makes them comfortable and doesn't convict. Which is exactly the place Satan wants people to be. We tend to forget that God is more than one thing and His love doesn't outweigh His pure holiness. God can't even be in the presence of sin which is the reason Jesus Christ came to pay the price so we could have fellowship restored with the Father. Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy. Psalms 99:9 KJV

@Nick Miller depends on definition of SJW...if you just means cancelling people or claiming everyone else is phobic I agree. If you are talking about caring about the economic well being of others and real issues of social justice then you are wrong. Evangelical charities like Tear fund that proclaim the gospel, run development projects in poorer countries and campaign on issues like debt forgiveness (Jublilee) and in favour of fair trade align very well with the teaching of the whole counsel of God.

@Nick Miller I care about social justice. That's right, it says the women who gave two pence gave more than the praise seeking wealthy men. It's not about the action, it's about the heart. Otherwise it's just legalism. Sinning is a heart issue. So doing something that looks "good" with evil intent is still sin. If I'm married and I buy a women a drink with the intent to take her back to my hotel room and sleep with her, regardless of the outcome, was I being generous by giving someone a drink or was I being a sleaze bag? What a very articulate and intelligent conversation. The Righteous posturing and passive/aggressive digs from this movement are so telling. I've had my own journey, like Alisa and I won't name names, but I realized after listening for a while, and participating in the movement, that eventually the message is very condescending. Also there is no room to challenge or discuss the points of scripture that are clearly expressing, holiness, Godly living. You cannot read the NT letters and believe that how we live is not important, ONCE we have been born again. The message is everyone is welcome, come! AND THEN... Be transformed into the image of the One who called you out of darkness!! These two videos are really good. I would love to know where that article was posted. If there is a way for you to give me that info, I would appreciate it. I am a bible teacher/missionary in Guatemala C. A. God Bless you!

The colleges and seminaries are run by Rome. Their Jesuits are in all places of learning. These two lessons by John Doerr on what it means to truly be born again are very liberating! The Trueth of the real Jesus Christ’s gospel of grace toward the sinner has been hidden by Rome’s Jesuits and scholars, who work tirelessly to cast doubt on the Word of God. The devil has deceived the whole world. (Rev 12:9) kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2a3dYKplNl_prM - born again basics pt1 kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqjNaGuEZZ1jmdk - born again basics pt2 Romans 8:2 “For the law of the spirit of life, in Christ Iesus, hath made me free from the law of sinne and death.” The fundamental problem is the corruption of Gods word. In this link you can find a lesson on the unbroken testimony of Jesus Christ in the English language which is found in the authorized version of 1611. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWrPeoqahpWlmZI 2 Corinthians 2:17 “For wee are not as many which corrupt the word of God: but as of sinceritie, but as of God, in the sight of God speake we in Christ.”

"We want, in fact, not so much a father in heaven as a grandfather in heaven--a senile benevolence who, as they like to say, 'liked to see young people enjoying themselves' and whose plan for the universe was simply that it might be truly said a the end of each day, 'a good time was had by all'." C.S. Lewis _The Problem of Pain_ Progressive Christianity seems to me to have two primary lines of thought: 1) I want a god who loves me and doesn't care about who I sleep around with as long as I "love" them. 2) I want a god who approves of a communistic economic system in which nobody is poor and nobody has to get a job and people who work harder than I do don't get to be "rich".

These two podcasts are so very accurate....thank you! I also would add that it's not that God damns those who "don't believe IN Jesus (believe He exists)", but rather He damn's those who "don't BELIEVE Jesus". The difference is highlighted by James 2:19: the demons acknowledge that Jesus exists, but they will not be saved. Rather it is those that believe what Christ has said, who listen to his voice as recorded in His written word, who ultimately are saved from the wrath of God.

I love how Lisa pointed out sanctification. I was saved out of the world later in life. I had a completely unchurched background. I noticed when I started going to church that there was not very much patience with the failings of man that had not yet been dealt with by The Lord. When He convicts us, there is also grace to overcome and sometimes correction that can be difficult but changes us from the inside out. When the church does not recognize that sanctification is progressive - a strange dysfunctional behavior modification is the result.

Alisa and Mike... I have an important point to make - something I think you guys might have missed - but first, I just want to say that I love what you’re both doing on your separate channels and also the collaborations. Mike, I’ve been watching your videos for 3 or 4 years now, and Alisa, I just discovered your channel a few months ago. Thank you both. The part I think maybe you missed on a bit: It was the section you were talking about the line “the Trinity is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, not Father, Son, and Holy Bible.” What you said was good, but there’s an important angle you didn’t touch on. I’ve heard this line among many in the more extreme charismatic churches (think Bethel and the like). The reason they use this line is because they like to put a heavy emphasis on “new revelation from the Holy Spirit” and they use a line like this to try and dismiss people who would use the Bible to refute their “new revelation.” While the line does attempt to diminish the importance of the Bible in an absurd way, it also provides some people the freedom they want to “receive” new information; to add or take away from the teaching and truths of scripture - because the Holy Spirit has more authority than the Bible, so any new revelation is more authoritative than scripture. I think it’s important to point this out, because many are manipulated into believing the words of men, even when they disagree with the clear teaching of scripture, because they’re told that it’s “new revelation,” which can’t be refuted by scripture. In other words, people are pressured to “believe and trust the new revelation of the Holy Spirit” even against their knowledge of the Bible because “it’s not Father, Son, and Holy Bible...” etc. I hope that made sense. Keep up the great work! It has been a huge blessing to me and so many others! Thanks!

Aspiring Catholic here, only commenting to the original post: If you heard a Catholic apologist teach that the Bible is not the word of God, then he or she is in error. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraph 102) clearly states as such. The Bible is called the Word of God during each Mass as well: www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/order-of-mass/liturgy-of-the-word/hearing-the-word-of-god Perhaps what the apologist meant by saying, "Jesus didn't write anything down" (which is /technically/ inaccurate, given John 8:6-8, yet Jesus is not recognized as the author of any book of Scripture), the apologist was building up an argument for the legitimacy of the Ancient Church. It goes like this: Since "Jesus didn't write anything down" (by which is meant, no extant writings of Jesus survive) and He entrusted His message and Church to His apostles (Acts 1:6-9), we must rely on the Apostles to know anything of Christ. Those Apostles founded the Church -- as is recorded in Acts -- and there has been a continuous line of leadership in the Church from the Apostles to today (through the Bishops of the Catholic Church, especially the Pope). This line of leadership of bishops was recognized in Scripture (look for the Greek "episkopos," or επίσκοπος), by the Church Fathers (Ignatius, Irenaeus, etc.), and is still recognized even by some Protestant communities that claim apostolic succession.

A thought on smoking: I think what they both had to say on that point was good. I would add that it is sinful if someone is using it as an emotional crutch- an idol, basically- to avoid seeking the Lord through scripture and prayer over an issue, such as anxiety. We should be taking our cares to God not using substances to numb ourselves. And this is where that overreaction of many Christians backfires: people feel overly criticized and condemned for smoking and turn away, when it would have been more fruitful to ask about what it is they may be soothing through smoking and offer help to solve that with a more spiritual approach so they aren’t depending on that anymore.

I often watch youtube videos to take my mind off things. That's in my oppinion very ok to do. But sometimes it can hinder me from seeking God. Sometimes it's just soothing and doesn't hinder me, sometimes it's me panicking and running away from issues when what I should do is seek God in my situation. Does this make sense? Sometimes when I'm anxious I eat because I know it calms me down. The question is do I substitute seeking God and _His_ solution with soothing my nerves with food, or do I soothe ny nerves with food and then seek God, just a bit more calmed down? It's not all black and white and it probably differs from person to person. I say - be sensitive to the Holy Spirit, grab onto whatever the Holy Spirit is telling you about your situations and habits, and act according to your consience.

So perhaps progressive christians actually believe what they teach rather than are trying to find the most manipulative lie. I wouldn't self describe as progressive but what I see on both sides of every debate is folk assigning malign motives to their opponents which for the most part are likely wrong, and even if correct they can't know for sure. If you do assign malign motives you are far less likely to pursuade those you disagree with because they will know their motives better than you do and if you are wrong about their motives it's easier for them to reject your whole.argument even if you are correct in the actual issue.

As far as the topic and comments on sin goes, I do have some thoughts also. Romans six talks about our sinful nature and tells us that as unbelievers in Christ we were slaves to our sin nature. When we become believers in Christ we are no longer slaves to that sinful nature. In other words, we have a choice and the power not to sin regularly because our nature has been changed and we have the Holy Spirit residing within us. Romans seven talks about how we as believers do not become sinless, but we can sin less, because we still have our flesh to deal with. You may not, but I struggle and deal with my flesh every day and I make choices that are either good or bad. It will be that way until I die and get to heaven. So while not every single thing or action we do is sinful, sanctification is working in us and changing us into the image of Christ, we all continually deal with the flesh and its temptations.

Psalm 51:16-17 and Hosea 6:6 Jesus did not like the Pharisees one bit because they were overly concerned with putting on airs, as many today do. This is why His Church will be small in comparison to the rest of the world. If Jesus is not foremost in your life, if you have NOT forsaken your sins and sinful nature to take on His sinless nature and to obey the Law which commands us to love God with EVERYTHING and to love our fellow humans as ourselves, you will NOT make it. Pray that He who began a good work in us will see it through to the end. And that End is closing in fast.

@@SkyKingAzure Food for thought. Would it also be correct, or appropriate to say that Jesus was "annoyed" with Teachers of the Law, Pharisees, and Sadducees because they "should have known better"? Reasoning: The Major and Minor Prophets wrote over 400 years before the birth of Jesus.

@@richardrice1032 I would say that Jesus would be more than annoyed with them. They were diluting the Gospel message with needless traditions and also being hypocrites in a way that only religious leaders can be. They were turning people away from God and Jesus could never be just 'annoyed' with that. Its one thing to block yourself, its another thing to block other people.

@@SkyKingAzure Agreed!! You may have already concluded that I was "being gentle with my Food for thought". Trying not use "bad language" especially in writing, no matter how strong the temptation. I can almost picture Jesus "rolling his eyes" briefly and thinking something to the 1st century effect of "Dudes, don't YOU get it?" Didn't Jesus also compare the "speck in someone else's eye to the log in your eye"? Any Follower of Jesus, Christian, who does not take time to be humble, and live "for the sake of another", truly can do "more harm than good".

I remember learning that sinning means "missing the mark" in confirmation class. I got the exact message you would have expected me to get: That sins isn't a big deal :( It took me about 5/6 years to turn away from my agnostic beliefs and towards Christ, and the bad doctrine I received growing up certainly didn't help

That is what it means, both in Hebrew (hata) and Greek (hamartia). What the progressive movement misses is how dangerous it is.

@@geoffstemen3652 yes, if you don't teach on the seriousness of sin, then it's easy to interpret as "no big deal"- which is obviously a very dangerous teaching.
