I have a 2005 F150 5.4 that I bought new with 25 miles and now has 345,000 miles. Engine has never needed anything more than maintenance and truck has original starter, alternator, water pump and even radiator and hoses. I live in my 19ft travel trailer and tow it all over the western US with it. Change your oil and maintain your truck. 👍🏼👍🏼

I have a 2006 Ford Expedition with a 5.4 and over 310,000 miles no problem ever but I change the oil every 3000 miles. Changing the oil is way cheaper then Changing the motor.

I agree 100%. I have a 2006 expedition. My dad bought it brand new, I went with him to test drive it back in June of 06. As of now it has 218k miles. Runs and drives like new. At 209k I put a new timing set in, it didn’t need one yet but I did it as a preventative measure. Front suspension is original besides struts and rear is original, u joints are original. 4 sets of spark plugs, 3 sets of brakes 3 sets of tires. I drive it everywhere, 5k full synthetic 5-30 oil changes and motorcraft oil filters since break in. The 5.4 3v isn’t junk it’s just picky and needs maintenance done. I’d buy another tomorrow knowing what I know about them.

The 5.4 3v commentary I see online really surprises me because I've seen a lot of these on the market w/ high mileage on original engines. Part of me thinks it comes down to lack of maintenance. It's a great engine as long as you maintain it. A lot of people simply don't maintain their vehicles. They'll go 8000+ miles between oil changes, when they get their oil changed they'll pay for the cheapest non-synthetic oil change available, they never change their transmission fluid/filter or differential fluids, etc. Change the oil every 3000-5000 miles, change that transmission fluid and filter at least every 50k-60k miles, same with the diff fluids and you'll be good to go. I love how you mentioned the crate engine cost too - that was my motivating factor for going with a 5.4 rather than jumping all the way up to a diesel in my '05 F-250 (overkill for my needs anyways) - a crate 5.4 with a high-flow oil pump preinstalled is sub $4000.

Yes good point on the Mellings oil pump for an upgrade when II change the cam phasers I will be upgrading to that oil pump. Thanks for watching and your input. It’s so nice to drive great trucks with no payments the key maintenance and learning how to work on your own vehicles. God Bless!!!

do a few up grades, ... new OEM timing kit, a Melling high volume oil pump, new style cam followers.. and run 5-30 and do your maintenance

Run 5w30 full syn and change it every 5k miles, and they'll run as long as anything else out there. These got a bad rap for a few reasons. The 5w20 oil Ford spec'd for CAFE standards, peoples general laziness on maintenance, and the fact that there are so many of them out there. There's probably 10x the number of F150s sold than Tundras, so you're 10x more likely to hear about someone having an issue with the Ford.

The 5.4 is a great engine. The cam phasers require regular oil changes so vehicles not maintained have timing/cam phaser issues. If maintained they are great.

Chain tensioners - valve train in general because it's an oil starved engine - get a Mellin oil pump, upgraded ( larger oil holes ) rockers and dont skimp on after market spark plug coils - dont use Champion plugs go Motorcraft - pucker yer ass and turn the key

Mine had 209k when I did the timing job. No broken chain guides or anything. Coulda pushed it further but wanted to get it done and over with. Oil has been changed every 5k miles since the day my dad bought it. I believe that’s key with these things.

The issue , it seems , is consistency . Some of these engines are pitifully messed up , and others (like mine ) is at 260,000 miles and I'm just now putting new timing chain and phasers and rockers in it.....they haven't gone out , just as a precaution. Same engine in a friend's truck . 100,000 miles and it is DONE!!!! That tells me that ford has a quality control problem on the factory level .
