If that's the case, Ibra is one of the best players ever, Neuer is one of the worst goalkeepers ever and Maldini one of the worst defenders of all time. Messi has a better prime than CR7, a better peak, is better vs the biggest and strongest clubs of the modern era and was better when both played in the same league vs the same opponents. He proved himself in different roles and positions on the pitch, with different teammates and coaches. He proved himself vs different opponents and is way better than CR7 vs the prem big 6. And he proved that he can produce goat level numbers without prime Barca in 18/19 and had better stats than CR7 in his best season, although CR7 was at his peak and had a way better team, which also proves that CR7 depends more on a strong team. CR7 was never able to produce impressive numbers without prime Madrid. On top of that, stats, the eye-test and coaches say Messi is the best of his era. So if you look at the bigger picture, there is no valid argumentation for CR7.

You also forgot Madrid fans who are extremely delusional. As someone who started watching football seriously around the time they both started. I think it was actually closer early on around the time Ronaldo's last season in United + his first 2 season in Madrid. But he didn't win that much during that time. He had more skills pace at that point. But I think Messi grew more complete as a player while Ronaldo relied more on his finishing/aerial ability/positioning. Messi's vision, playmaking and freekick improved over time.

He became a striker instead of a Left Wing, making him rely less in dribbling and more on positioning and finishing. He had no reason to improve his passing, playmaking or vision during that time, because he was already the Greatest Striker of All Time at that point. He just played a different game than Messi, that's all.

But when people started seeing soo many goals from someone whom they mistakenly believed was a winger they ended up thinking he was better than he really is. Position does make a huge difference and it's the reason messi scored 91 goals in one year. Then in 14/15 , he dropped probably the most complete season as a Rw. That season truly defined how a modern day winger should play. Scoring, dribbling, creating chances. He then hit another peak 16-19 where I would say individually no player was better than him and he literally carried barca by topping all la liga attacking stats in that period. He controlled all the games. And just when you think he was declining, he hits an international peak with phenomenal copa america and world cup performances . I'm probably biased as a barça fan, but during the Madrid treble in the UCL, I was amazed by what Cr7 was doing, every night in the ucl, insanely clutch. But when I saw Messi play, it wasn't about the goals or the assists, It was just Messi. I cannot explain it, it's Messi, you just have to watch the whole 90 min to understand it. There's hardly any argument in favour of Ronaldo at this point.
