I researched converting a Sportster into a track bike and I read that the hard limitation they have is the swing arm mounting point. They said it makes the bike wobble above 120 MPH. They say if it wasn't for that, in theory you could modify one all the way into a proper track bike.

Check the years of the sportsters they were referring to. The swingarm pivot was changed on the 2014+ sportsters. I suspect made this frame change to remedy that. They also relocated the rear brake reservoir too. Allowing the ability to fit much taller shocks than the pre 14 bikes. You want to see that wobble in action. Check out the xr1200 race series on KZbin. The xr1200 bikes were that pre 14 style frame.

Sounds like you're referring to the rubbermounts, the swingarm mounts to the rear rubber motor mount allowing wonky movement. The easy fix is replacing the rubber motor mounts with solid ones. No more wobble.

@@jameshill8498 *NOICE* So you guys are saying that that it IS possible to at least make a Sportster stable at speed. Good luck getting the power to weight ratio to match a sport bike I know, but while I'm learning I thought it would be cool to build out a Sportster and max it out before moving on to a 1000RR. I always wondered about the XR1200 and how they got them to be good on track. I'm gonna check out that race series now.

The tool I love the most is a spring puller - for exhaust and stand springs. Over the years, until I got a puller I swear I lost the same weight in skin as the puller!!! Damn pliers!! I worked as a mechanic for a few years and have done all my own bike and car repairs and services since. I still have the same socket set and allen keys from 53 years ago. Tools modified to fit one-off situations are a just as serviceable as new too.

Hi I wanted to give more information regarding the death wobble 17:06 because I study 2 wheels stability for a living. What said Yammie here is completely true !! Letting the bike stabilise it self is the correct way to do. This is because the geometry of bikes are design in such a way that they posses a range of speed where they are stable on their own. That range of speed depend on a lot of factors . Rake angle, tire width, tire radius, type of suspension and weigh of the bike are the main one. A bike with high rake angle and high tire width (aka an harley) will be stable at low speed (less than 10 mph) and completely unstable a high speed (more 100 mph), where a more sporty bike would not be stable at low speed but fully capable to reach 200 mph safely. Like always in mechanics everything is a compromise depending what your are looking for. Another huge factor for the range of speed is the weigh on the front-wheel. It is the main cause of ignition of a death wobble. Because if the weigh on the front-wheel increase drastically (during a bump or a jump per exemple) the bike may not be stable at highway speed just for a brief moment, starting the death wobble. The second main reason of the starting of death wobble is poorly maintain or poorly tune suspension (for the love of god preload your suspension if you are carrying something heavy [your fat as* included 😇] this is important) decreasing maximum top speed before instability start to show off. But now what to do if it happen to you, like Yammie said trust the bike don't fight the handle-bar you will lose. A good thing to do is to let off the gaz and brake very gently with the rear brake, you should brake in such a way that you decelerate without transferring weigh to the front. The last advice I can give is letting the bike wobble on is own between your knees and if possible you try to stop your own body from wobbling it aggravate the effect. A very bad advice I have seen online is accelerating at full throttle. It could work if your bike is able to do a wheelie (or transferring enough weigh to the rear)at the speed your are going if not well... you will taste the ground at even higher speed now because you will reach a even more unstable region. Hope this long comment was useful and thx for reading till the end

I rode my Bultaco Persang 250 motorcross bike on track - with actual road tyres and road gearing. It was an absolute ball and slowing from about 90 mph (150kph) at the end of straight for the 180 degree hairpin with a 5 inch single leading show brake was a 'highlight'. With those limitations I had some of the most fun I've ever experienced.

The Sportster you’re describing with the twin discs and inverted fork is the Roadster, there was a HD accessory kit for the Roadster that included rear sets and clip on bars, these with the Roadsters taller rear shocks would of made it the most suitable Sportster for the track. The Forty-eight was the bobber style With a fat front tyre.

I don't have SAE tools I own a 2001 F350, a 2010 Dodge caliber and I ride a 2000 victory v92 SC which all three of those vehicles are metrics. So why would I need SAE tools?
@metalfenderguybradwalker191614 сағат бұрын
@junebugsampson360 plenty of reasons but the number one reason is. There are plenty of things that require a one inch socket or wrench, plenty of things that R 1/8 or 3 sixteenths. There's plenty of things, plenty of things that are 6 point and not 12. Just a lot of reasons. It's better to have it in there. Not needed and to me to not have it. You'll have metric and standard today. In many vehicles, whether they are mostly metric or even mostly standard. There will be some metric things in there too, if you work on things all the time. You wouldn't know that I'm not one for stripping things it sucks quite alot
