I like it without gimball, makes it more immersive, but thats a personal thing. In the beginning the angle was a bit to low, that's always a bit tricky without gimball i guess. I think if you are not wearing your full face helmet this will do just fine. PS you've disabled the comments on the patreon version, not sure if you are aware of that.

Make sure that the angle is good on the chest mount, and lock it tight with a screw driver, never to be touched again ;) The angle was way too low on the first clip, bit better on the rest, but should still be higher still. Otherwise just the right amount of stabilization, resulting in better immersion than gimball footage.

Looked good. Your video style has always been the chin-mount and it worked so well for most of the videos you do (long climbs and descents with wide open scenery that we all want to gawk at). I assume that, like myself, the viewers like your tendency to look around a lot instead of just being a typical "SEND IT!!1" trail video. As you do more traditional MTB singletrack, getting the feel of the bike action might be more important so can see the need for the chest mount too. Clearly you just need the chin-mount, chest-mount, drone, Alex's view, a Rylo on top for 360 action, an advanced team of action photogs, passerby phone clips, tapped CCTV feeds, maybe a satellite shot or two... then you'll have it all covered!

Stabilization looks great, i still prefer the chin cam, i recently included some chin cam mixed with chesty/gimbal on the same section of trail and although the gimbal footage was superb i felt it didn't show the true nature of the trail, the chin cam shows how rugged the trail was from the riders perspective and did appear to look faster as well as showing the drops over rocky sections in moe detail , i think the hero 7 chest mounted gives a more natural feel than a gimbal whilst maintaining the stability but still prefer the chin cam overall, great vid :)

camera worked well. the chest mount though im not so keen on. the field of view is limited, the frame is full of the cockpit of the bike rather than the trail. The trail also appears to come at the viewer too quickly, I just prefer the original helmet mount view which gives a more natural field with greater perpective of the trail and how it would appear if riding it personally. admire the decision to trial another way. Like you say uphill would be different to the downhill. all the best.

I think a gimbal paired with the Hero7 would have done your riding more justice to be honest, that was some good riding, the gimbal would have shown your lean angle and made the footage a bit more dynamic, I guess it’s a personal preference as some people prefer it without, I just feel like FPV is fun with a fully stabilised image :)

The stabilization held up pretty well in the dark forest. However, the GoPro can not keep the horizon as level as a gimbal, so it still loses. I could watch it longer than completely unstabilized footage, but not all the way through the video, before I felt nausea coming. (I am one of those people who will puke in seconds given the "right" footage.) It works very well on the chin mount, because 1) you add your own mechanical stabilization, and 2) there are far fewer horizon movements.

James Harvey I’m guessing he was. In my eyes, that’s even more impressive. If it was, then it’s attached to his trunk which is bouncing all over the shop when you run. That hypersmooth practically eliminates it. You can make your arm sort of act like a gimbal but not your body. This has sold this Gopro to me!

Get into your riding position and have someone set your GoPro so that it’s vertical, that’s a good starting point. You can also shoot in a 4:3 aspect ratio, which gives you more image room up and down.

I think the real question here is about stabilization technology, not the mounting location. Regardless of mounting position, camera mounting angle and image content thereby captured determine user preference independent of stabilization. 1st off, imho the camera angle was compromised for much of your content because angle was downward a bit too much and this cut off the upper scenery ahead and the rate at which it comes into view (because of the wide angle effect), except when riding down the steeper stuff. Getting the correct camera angle is always problematic with chest mounts because they are difficult to set because the reference position for setting the angle always varies based on the clothing you wear and the position/adjustments of the bike you ride (i.e. you ride different bikes, you may have a dropper post, etc.), but if you chin mount on a helmet (other positions are hard to set without a gage), the mounting angle is more easily mechanically set consistently to the desired position, the helmet position on your head is consistent, and your head naturally seeks the same angle of view. Another big disadvantage of a chest mount is that you CAN'T PAN the camera so numerous opportunities for recording desired content are lost, unless you rotate your entire body or grab the camera and turn it with one hand while riding or stopping. Riding around corners is a perfect example of the need to pan to capture the action, events, and what lies ahead. A chest mount has no brain by default, but a helmet mount does (i.e. the rider actively looks around corners, so stuff get s recorded in response). A chin cam is inherently more stable because the human neck and body behave like a giant gimbal for proper vision, but its conceivable that if the camera software is able to do a better job, than a chest mount may be fine. Again it just boils down to one's preference for angle of capture and how effectively it is adjusted. The software obviously has limitations based on lighting conditions, so the stabilization benefit is always available from the helmet mount (chin preference). My personal preference is helmet mount (chin) fo scenery, but to get a better sense of what the rider is doing, sometimes a chest mount can reveal it better because it picks up the arms and more of the bars, but at the same time, the lower angle gives up some info about what is low/under and in front of the wheel. No matter what mounting location is used, it is a compromise in results. Back to my main point... stabilization may or may not depend on mounting position, and viewer/photographer preference of the desired result is the ultimate decision driver. So what info do you want show and how do you want it to appear?
