I’m glad you are very honest about the Monsterverse. On one hand, the continuity is literally whatever you make of it. A filmmaker could change Mothra’s origin from one movie to the next or pick up a random reference form the bin of comics and make something with that. In that regard, the Monsterverse is in desperate need of a guiding hand if it wants to be Legendary’s flagship series On the other hand, it’s become a wonderful “pick your own course” buffet of Kaiju media. From fun and schlocky to adventurous and serious, the Monsterverse is a fun mystery box of Kaiju goodness where you’ll get an interesting western take on these giant monsters and seeing the filmmaker behind it’s vision in full swing, a glimpse of fun ideas that, though might not get sequels, leaves viewers feeling satisfied and like they had a fun time. It does feel like the Showa era where everyone has their own favorite film for their own reasons for how unique they are, rather than a processed tried and true formula that gets dull after a couple films. Long live the Monsterverse and I can’t wait to see what new ideas the next film maker has!
@DMan19548 ай бұрын
Seems you and I are on the exact same page. I actually think the MonsterVerse is pretty weak as a cinematic universe, but very strong as a standard film series where continuity is less important. The interconnectivity between the films is often the worst part because the filmmakers refuse to care about doing it right. But the fact each film is really solid on its own makes it a super fun and refreshing series. I am also super glad we don't have a standard "MonsterVerse formula" they stick to with every entry.
@macabrevoid8 ай бұрын
@@DMan1954 for sure For the Monsterverse to continue, I think it needs to decide whether it’ll keep up this trend of “stand alone-esque films” that bring in different directors to create a shmorgishborg board of different films with varying levels of ideas, or if it’ll “get things straight” and lock in to create a coherent road map. Taking the middle ground with half and half will probably not be best for the long term survival of the Monsterverse, but that’s just my own opinion. I remembered when everyone was worried GxK might tank and it became #1 movie in the world, so it looks fortune favors the Monsterverse so far and we’ll just have to see how this ship sails. I think the main appeal of the monsterverse and its key to success so far has been doing new and fun ideas that audience haven’t seen before, lending even a painfully flawed movie as GxK or a stunning work like KOTM movie goer brownie points of “yeah, I liked that! I want to see more!”

For what it is, I'm incredibly happy that the Monsterverse exists. This is my favorite version of Godzilla, and one of the most important pieces of kaiju media both to me and in general. It was the Monsterverse that got the ball rolling in bringing back Godzilla to the public eye. It was the Monsterverse that finally allowed for King Kong to have his rematch. And, on a personal note, it was the Monsterverse to allow so many, myself included, to discover and get into Godzilla and the wider Kaiju Genre, and allow for many different people to put their stamp on the kaiju genre. For all of it's flaws, inconsistencies, and blemishes, the Monsterverse has given so much in return, and I adore it because of that. Long live the king.

Even though the Monsterverse has its ups and downs, it's still a success and doing better than most cinematic franchises which we will be grateful for. I have to give the MV its flowers on this aspect. With how goofy, stupid, and retcon heavy the MV got, it is still more coherent than the DCEU and that is impressive.

When it comes to the larger Godzilla franchise, I consider the Monsterverse movies to be around the middle of the pack. None of the films are genuinely great, but a lot of people seem to really enjoy them and that's what's really important. Despite my personal criticisms, I feel like the Monsterverse honors the character of Godzilla and they're doing a good job of bringing scores of new fans into the franchise. And for that I am grateful.
@reptilo70997 ай бұрын
I would say that MV is a peak and pure cinematic universe that is filled with creative ideas, interesting world build, and unique stories. The only thing that this series has a hard time doing is keeping the continuity in tact (even tho it's not all messed up entirely like the MCU, DCEU, or Bayverse), but they still need to learn and acknowledge the lore they already created and established before the series end up like others (which they're probably aware of and working on right now). Even tho the MV has a few flaws (such as the timeline along with characters of legacy of monsters and Skull Island) but it's still a successful franchise that has so much development and a unique way of creating interesting stories for both humans and monsters. So I do hope things get back on track and that legendary plans to keep the continuity in tact in order to make it more coherent towards success in the future🔥🔥🔥.

it's not a perfect cinematic universe, but out of what we have going currently, it's certainly my favourite. Amid all the continuity mess, gotta hand appreciation to Greg Keyes (writer of all novelisations from KOTM onward, and Godzilla Dominion) for doing his best to keep things connected and throwing in extra content to link characters and monsters together. He's the closest thing the MV has right now to a "guiding hand" in terms of lore

I love Kong and had fun leading up to GVK, but people took it way too seriously and it ruined the entire thing for me. However, I do strongly feel that Godzilla's character writing is really horrible in the MonsterVerse post-KOTM and so I will take shots at the writing. He can do no wrong and yet he goes to war with Kong for no reason. He is unbeatable and over powered and yet he can lose to Mechagodzilla (ignoring the novelizations and outside statements, there's no reason in the film this happens other than sloppy writing)

The Monsterverse is a unique Godzilla (and Kong) film that revolves around 2 characters and how they perceive the world alongside their journey in life. I feel like the MV is connecting the pieces together by first creating splinter films (G14 is related to MLOM but excluding Shinomura oddly, GKOTM continued on to GVK and finally GXK but still retaiins its connectivity to the GVK:The Hunted but somehow did not incude the Iwi relocation event and the part where Camazotz appear during the events of Kingdom Kong [See the pun?] itself), then reconnecting the dots and crosses by using either retconned comics or films like GKOTM to make some in-universe connection to that particular comic in tandem. Numerous attempts are made to connect them, but i feel like i love the way it is, i dont care about it crossing over to the Showa genes, id still enjoy it as it is. Including Tiamat was a special moment for me as we atleast see her before her ass gets beaten to shit by Godzilla real quick, disappointing but alright Long live the Monsterverse!

Add Shinomura and a little bit of Methuselah and also Behemoth on the contrary to show just how diverse the film's universe is. REMAKE the Tiamat scene to just give us an alternative scenario of where Tiamat just "Yeah no im getting the ---k outta here" type of movie story instead of DISCOMOMBULATING HER INFRONT OF THE FANS. Add MUTO Prime in GKOTM as to tie in the events between 2014-2019 And finally, of course, ADD. THE. OBSCURE. TITANS!!! Where's Amhuluk Where's Na kika?

The next movie or series have to get back to how the first few movies were shot. While the monsters and actions has seen an uptick in its overall quality and quantity, the shift to more silliness and “fun” has increased as well. The first two Godzilla/Kong movies felt very serious. Their scale and impending existence was highly regarded. The last two movies didn’t give that emotional feel as much. I thought GXK was the worst of the 4 movies personally and it wasn’t close. Godzilla and kongs screen time was great. The humans felt a bit silly and irrelevant minus helping kong. Also Godzilla powering up didn’t seem to be “needed”. They continuously downplay his atomic-breath in this monsterverse. He has done more damage to buildings and planes than he has to actual creatures it seems (when he does actually land his hit). I hope they get back to the comics in the next monarch series. Movie wise I wouldn’t mind them getting more serious or reaching into the space realm or another Toho monster. The only real original creation that did it for me was in fact the mutos

I feel like it's a stretch to even call it a cinematic universe. For 4 reasons: 1) lack of solo outings- we've had 3 solo films about two characters. That's it. Feels more like a series of sequels. Everything takes place one after another. Nothing happens at the same time. 2) centering on godzilla- it doesn't feel like a cinematic universe when everything seems to revolve around one character. "he's the king of the monsters"; I feel like part of what made the MCU work was there was no hierarchy. It didn't all center on one character. But here... Everything is Godzilla's rival, he takes part in everything, even Kongs characterization has to revolve around Godzilla ("he earned Godzillas respect", "he doesn't bow down"). He rules over everything and everyone whether they admit it or not. Makes it feel like the Godzillaverse guest starring Kong rather than a shared universe. 3) lack of cohesion- as you pointed out, continuity is abysmal in this supposed cinematic universe. Nothing ties together. Nothing has any lasting impact. It's just a bunch of stuff that happens. This also means the status quo never gets challenged. Godzilla started on top and he's stayed there. It's boring and will get repetitive fast.

@@joshuacelani1857 It is, KotM is the only MV film that prioritized its world building over actually making a good movie. Definitely the odd one out, when the other films barely care about world building at all.

@@SerenGetter I agree with you. I like KOTM but it feels like a giant trailer for future movies that are never gonna happen thanks to its bad performance and GvK changing the direction of the franchise as a result

I am genuinely concerned with a writer coming on board who wrote wonder woman 1984 and wrote for marvel. I just dont want to see any woke BS. Just make a fun movie. That’s what it should be. Wingard knew how to do that.
