The midsize unibody SUV category is HUGE with about 30 vehicles from mainstream manufacturers alone. It's further divided into two subcategories: a group of smaller vehicles that range from about 187" to 193" in length, nearly all of which are two row offerings, and a group of larger vehicles (195" - 204" long) where 3 rows of seats are the norm.* Nearly every mainstream automaker offers a vehicle in each sub-category in the US. But prior to the introduction of the Venza Toyota had a gaping hole in their portfolio. No two row midsize SUV. Now Mazda stands alone as the only mainstream automaker without a midsize 2 row offering. To fill the hole in their lineup Toyota could have followed the practice of some automakers with significantly different vehicles in the two sub-categories (e.g. Hyundai, KIA, Ford, Chevy, etc.) Or they could have simply chopped off a bit of the length of their existing 3 row midsize SUV for a two row offering (e.g. Honda Pilot, VW Cross Sport) and called it a day. But if Toyota does anything better than building good, reliable and appealing vehicles, it's building PROFITABLE vehicles. So why not take an existing vehicle, the Toyota Harrier (built on the same platform as the RAV4 and designed for international markets including Japan) and re-badge it as a Venza. Voila! Inexpensive design and production and a vehicle that meets Toyota's needs for a midsize two row vehicle. It might not be a sales leader like the Highlander and the RAV4 but the Venza is unlikely to seriously cannibalize sales of those vehicles. Furthermore, Toyota could offer it solely as a hybrid and include the same unique (though with limited functionality) rear wheel electric motor powered AWD system that sells so well in the Highlander and RAV4 models. Who's the target market? That's easy. The Venza, more than most rivals, is a 21st century station wagon for those who wouldn't be caught dead in a wagon. Mid-level managers and spouses in suburbs with no more than a kid or two and empty nesters who aren't prepared to pay Lexus prices. Off road adventurers? No way. This is a grocery getter/freeway hauler that will seldom see any environment as challenging as a gravel road. But that's OK. It's economical and sends the message of being the car an upwardly mobile, environmentally conscious, and frugal consumer would find appealing. Largely the same demographics that bought station wagons in the 1980's. *This categorization applies to almost all vehicles but there are a couple of exceptions. The KIA Sorento sits alone among the the group of smaller SUVs with a standard 3rd row and the VW Cross Sport is large for a 2 row SUV at 195.5" in length, half an inch longer than a 3 row Highlander. Otherwise, the smaller vs larger midsize sub-categories applies to virtually every automaker's offerings.

Love your review(s). Just a suggestion for people like me who have owned Toyota or other hybrids. How about driving this like most people do? I know many want to know how it accelerates in sport mode and how noisy it is when at full throttle, and that's an important performance parameter, but I would like to see you put it in normal or eco modes, accelerate modestly with the car running on electricity and describe the transition to the engine. This is what most people do day in and day out, and an analysis of that style in addition to more aggressive modes would be helpful. I'm not talking about hypermiling; just a more conservative driving style analysis. Also, a decibel reading at highway speeds would be a helpful comparison.

I was either going to get a new Rav or a used Lexus but for what i would pay for a used Lexus i could get this with all the new technology for the same price just about. And as far as the new Ravs they are just not as nice as this car is. I am really liking this new Venza a lot. I think it is a really sharp looking vehicle. The more I am seeing it the more I am liking this. This reminds me a lot of a more sporty looking Lexus. Back in August when my lease was up this vehicle was not available yet and if it was I might have looked into getting one of these. Instead I went with another Rav4 in the XSE Hybrid Silver and Black one which I do really like a lot. Both the Venza and the Rav4 hybrid is very comparable in HP and MPGs. The Venza is just a little bigger by length but heard the Rav4 has just a little bit more cargo space but only by a very small amount which you won't really notice I heard.

When the Venza first returned, I thought the same thing many people thought: what’s the point of this car because if I want a utilitarian crossover, get a RAV4 and if you want a more luxurious crossover, get a Lexus. But I’ve been looking at the Venza lately because while I prefer to get the RAV4 Prime, they’re basically an endangered species! And I don’t want to spend all that extra money for a Lexus when the Venza is JUST as nice! Now I have a conspiracy theory that Toyota purposely lowered the RAV4 Prime’s availability in order to push the sales of the Venza lol

I leased it 10 days ago. The Limited. My wife wants to buy it ASAP. This is my first hybrid, so I like the change. Low mileage driver so I didn’t buy it to save gas. It is fun though, getting such great mileage. 47.5 on one trip, where traffic was light, so I didn’t need to accelerate off the light. Usually get 39 to 40 mpg. I think the engine is fine. Actually it feels more like a 6 cylinder. Unexpectedly quick. Reasonably quiet. I will probably buy it at lease end, unless they put the Highlander engine/transmission in it by then. That may be a fun change. Panoramic sunroof really lightens up the interior, digital rear camera great, birds eye view great. Wheels scream, “ I’m expensive.” My primary dislike are the tiny storage bins,

Use the automatic setting for headlights. Once you maximize use of the automatic settings, you don’t go to the infotainment center much. Audio for selections is my main use of the info center. The info center is a large touch Ipad. If you use a tablet, you won’t have a problem. I really like the speed limit signs being displayed directly in my field of vision.

I've heard that the RAV4 has a larger cargo area. Is this true? I hear that the Highlander hybrid is much nicer than the Venza, is that your impression too?

This is very true.

Does the rear motor have it's own battery that would need replacement??

The low turn signal indicator is horrible. I had someone in a Kia , force their way into my lane and the darn turn signal was in my blind spot.if the indicator had been in the traditional area I would have seen it. Drivers with these type of vehicles will need to begin their signals much sooner. They cannot wait until the last minute.

Very good video. I saw in another video that the rear seats actually recline somewhat. Would’ve loved to see that in here. But you covered everything I wanted to know.
