In todays episode of cars with Jay I take a look at the 2016 BMW M2 to see if its still worth your consideration 6 years on with prices dropping to as little as £25k. Not to mention is the M2 comp worth a £20k premium over it?
Many thanks to @DunstableM2 for letting me review his car!

The only actual difference with the suspension is carbon and aluminium strut braces. I think all of the extra rigidity comes from the aluminium one the carbon brace seems to be for show. The steering stabilty control and diff software can be coded to m2 comp software. I upgraded my steering to m2 comp it is much better than original more direct and seems faster. I have since coded gts steering which is even better same as comp just a bit more weight

I've done the bracing retrofit and suspension was allowed to actually work properly for the first time, more noticeable than steering feel although this was too improved. The sound from the N55 and a downpipe can not be underestimated vs going slightly faster in an M2C. N55 develops torque earlier from a dig so if into accelerating from a standstill OG has it

I've had my 2017 M2 now for close to five years. Whoever says the steering and brakes aren't up to BMW snuff doesn't know what they are talking about. I've been to Sebring International Raceway many times with my car and the brakes and steering are the best of any BMW I've owned and I've owned BMWs since 1971 !

@@RaymondLo84 Agreed, I live in the UK and have graced most of our national level race tracks and never found the brakes lacking, however... On the tracks with high braking levels, I found that they did indeed have a habit of fading in comparison to my friends M2s with Big Brake kits fitted, but I really didn't like the idea of fronting the £3-4k that they had and instead contacted the M Sport division and managed to speak to one of their race teams engineers to ask what they'd discovered during development and testing, and he just ("un officially", they're not supposed to promote aftermarket brands!) recommended what fluids and pads I might find interesting if switched to at my next service and then, there was 'very' little difference between my and my friends M2s.... And I quietly had the last laugh over them. If we were driving a 6,12 or 24hr race event, they would definitely have been the wiser to invest the extra several thousand pounds in a Big Brake Kit, but over the period of a single track day, just better fluids and pads is all the M2 needs.. And even then, that's only if ones experienced enough to push the M2 to its limits for a whole session of laps, for most people... They'll find the stock M2 brakes are quite adequate, unless they are like my brother in law and they have a lead foot and whose driving style is about as smooth as sandpaper, we've literally been in the same cars on tracks where he wasn't just setting lower lap-times, but was having to pit three or more laps before myself, to let his cars cool down. Like myself he's got a national level racing licence, so he's received the same lessons and knowledge as myself, he just can't seem to figure out what "being smooth" in ones driving actually means... He burns way more fuel too! He spends about three to four times in expenditures than what I do over a single year attending the exact same events,... How we drive our cars is just as important as how we spec and tune them. So many people spend a fortune on upgrading their cars to go faster, when they would benefit FAR, FAR more from first paying to go on some race drivers instruction courses. ... I know, because I can put my hands up and say, twenty five years ago I used to be one of them... I've set much faster laps in stock OEM cars on the same tracks over the years, than I used to set in a heavily tuned version of the same cars some twenty years prior.

I own the OG M2 2017 LCI, I read about the supposed gripes some had with it before making my choice... No 1, Not fast enough! (Seriously? It will hold its own with pretty much anything out there and it's so well balanced it can actually use more of its power more of the time, especially here on our tiny, often cold and damp UK roads/tracks.. I've left plenty of £100+k performance cars struggling for grip off the line as my OG 'consistently' puts its power down to the road and just goes! Power means nothing without the Balance to distribute and consistently utilise it!). No 2, It's too edgey on the throttle and the steering is not direct enough. (Hmm, though I can see what they meant.. Manufacturers tend to make the steering heavy, even a bit numb because they are aware that novice level drivers will be buying these types of cars and will likely exceed their own abilities long before the car does its, and over-correcting is how most will end up writing their cars off, so they do the above to limit driver over input making it (In theory..) a safer car in less experienced hands but, for experienced drivers... It is an annoyance! However, it's thankfully nothing a GTS flash mod & maybe a few light mods for a few hundred quid can't rectify, same with the edginess, and a good stage 1 will not only give more power and improve fuel management, but will allow the M2 chassis to utilise it all FAR better than the OEM set up. .... No 3, It's too heavy! (So BMW solved this by.. Making the M2 heavier?! Though the M2 is fairly heavy for its class, it's by no means the heaviest and the actual power to weight ratio of the OG M2 is actually quite good for what it was designed to do, which is go around tracks really fast with exceptional balance! The OG is not as good as it should have been from factory, but if it really matters to oneself,.. Then just spend a few extra hundred quid and it will be, especially with tyres.. Make sure you get the right ones for the environment your M2 is going to live in, above all else I found the most beneficial area was getting the right tyres on my M2,.. I first got mine with Continental 6, which were good once they were fully warmed up but they were junk when not.. I fitted PS4-S and they just transformed the M2 and made it far more usable throughout the UKs weather and environment. Also, the one thing that few ever mention about the M2 Comp and CS with the S55 is that they inherited the same engine killing hub issue as with the M3 & M4, so if you get one you better make sure you have the BMW warranty on it, I ran a 2017 M4 Comp before "downsizing" to my used M2 and it spun two hubs in the space of two years from new(!)... Spending almost four months in the garage waiting to have the engines replaced! Thankfully, this is NOT a problem with the OG M2 unless one starts modding them up to +600bhp, but for anyone with a M2 Comp or CS its now something that will constantly be in the back of your mind,, you can tell yourself that the odds of it happening to 'your' M2 is very low, I did that with my M4 but it still happened twice regardless (And no, my M4 was not modded, it just had an MSport cat back, BMWs GTS DCT flash and a Evolve twin carbon air intake), and I know without question that, had I not had the BMW warranty, that would have been £40+k just flushed down the pan and very likely a divorce shortly after(!), and I didn't want the same issue with a M2, so I went for the OG with about £2-3k extra to get it just right and of the other M2 Comps and CSs of friends I've driven, I'd still rather have my OG anytime. .... The only real gripe I do have about my OG M2 is the seats, they're good, well adjustable and do pretty much everything they need to, but they look WAY to basic to be in a M car, I've got my eye on a set of M4 Comp seats to fit, but I like the look of some Recaros that work out to cost about the same and Cobra can do a custom seat where they swap all the electronics from the stock M2 ones into their custom seat, which again costs about the same (maybe even a little less going with Cobra). A good review my friend, but from my experience... I'm genuinely glad I went with the OG and saved myself thousands over the Comp or CS, for just £2-3k my OG more than holds its own against either, and when the warranty expires or I want to sell it, there's no killer Hub issue either I or the individual contemplating a used OG M2 have to worry about. Many used cars sales may offer warranties on used M2 Comps CSs/M3s and M4s, but if the hub spins they won't actually cover the damage, claiming its a known 'manufacturer design' issue and will send you packing to BMW, who will say Sorry, but we disagree... And then you're either tens of thousands out of pocket or stuck in the courts for years legally trying to get one of them to pay up... And I know this because, that's what my brother in law went through after his used sale purchased M3 spun its hub and he tried to use the warranty. I enquired how much it would have been to extend my M4 BMW warranty when it got near to ending and was quoted £2-3k per year! And if you're unfortunate enough to need any spun hub damage fixed without to much hassle other than time, then one will need to factor in the cost of a extended official BMW warranty, when buying a used M2 Comp or CS, which few reviews ever seem to mention when covering the M2 Comps and CSs vs the OG M2. Keep up the content, all M2 content is welcomed in my book! And sorry for the lengthy response,..lol, But I'm a true petrol head, 'what can I say!?'. Cheers!

I feel like the base is a better option for those who drive there car often suspension is softer etc. if you want more power or better handling characteristics aftermarket mods and M performance parts can get you to the same level as the comp. Taken my car on road trips and many other places and I feel like I would’ve gotten sick of the tighter suspension. Servicing is super easy and have done my first service myself at home don’t know if it’s much different in the comp or not.

The m2 isn't about raw straight-line speed. That's knot why you buy the car. SO having s55/b58/s58 tuning potential isn't really an issue. I think the power you can easily push out of an N55, is more then enough for what the m2 needs to do. If you need to go faster, you either bought the wrong car, or your super slow in the corners and try to make it up with speed so improve your driving technique. The m2 is an evolution of the e46 m3, it's about driving and handling not power. If you want to get faster, become a better driver.

The fact that it kicked it’s arse out regularly put a massive smile on my face and that’s what it’s all about really, fun trumps precision any day (for me)

@@RacksonRacksonRibss nope. For example the 8V.2 RS3 is 400PS quoted, they dyno at around 395 hp/bhp. HP is 0.98 to 1PS and HP and BHP are much the same 1hp to 0.99 BHP. If it were whp then maybe it would be nearer 440bhp.

Either of these would be my dream daily. I don't think either has an engine which is that 'special' and honestly, I really believe the B58 is a better engine than both. But both are not really about the engine, it's everything else.

Well, I did get an OG M2, and the N55 and DCT (both standard) are not as good as my old tuned B58 and XHP mapped ZF8 HP50. BUT .... Everything else, and I mean EVERYTHING else, is better. Ride, cornering, damping, steering, looks, sound, everything.......

Hi, sorry to jump in so late. My 2018 M2 puts out 465hp/415t only with stage 1 tune, upgraded air filter and Wagner Evo2 intercooler. 2 years of hard driving with proper warmups, cool downs, and timely care. I think if you’re going with s55 for 20k more, why stick with m2? There are plenty of options of m3-m4.

the m2c looks better on the spec sheet and is prob the logical choice but the old m2 has more of a presence on the steet, when you hear that engine, especially with a M performance exhaust, you are like damn that sound like something serious you have a lot of fun driving it around town the m2c sadly sound way more quiet, this is in Canada btw, i can imagine with a opf it would be so silent

I love the idea of a manual light-ish sports car. However, it’s so much slower than my tuned E63 AMG S Model that does 0-100 in 3.3 seconds and has that beautiful V8 rumble, especially with the mufflers off.

Wtf is that title lmao ? I'm like in another dimension here. Of course it's good. Everybody that knows cars knows that the OG M2 is wayyyy better than the Competition or the CS. N55 > S55. The S55 engine is awful and sounds like a trashcan. It doesn't have any character compared to the N55. And I'm not even talking about the look of both models. The OG M2 looks so good and like a wild beast. Don't get me wrong, the Competition looks good too but that agressivness is just missing. It's just... less raw. I don't know of any single person who bought the M2 Competiton and didn't immediately regret it just to sell it and get back to the OG M2 right after. Back to the real deal.
@CarswithJay
@CarswithJay 2 жыл бұрын
I know plenty of people who have done the upgrade and not regretted it. Yes you could make your M2 performt he same as the M2C. But for those who like out of the box factory cars the M2C is the winner. The N55 does have more character and does sound alot better.
