Thank you for this! Very helpful! There are many mixed reactions over the internet, but I guess it is better to use one than none at all.

DisneySoprano Hi, thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you found my video helpful. The mixed reactions are caused by many things, I mostly find the negative views though are by people who don't understand what a reflection filter actually does and it can be quite hard to explain to someone who doesn't understand the technology of sound and doesn't have a sound technician's ear but yes, set up properly, I would say it is better to use this one (rather than the cheaper alternatives) than not.

Good demo - quite a big difference I think, less boxy and cleaner vox from using the filter. Will give one a try for home recording.

@@IbandUK I think it is worth buying as another tool in the arsenal. If one doesn't work then try another. Since I got it I went on to improve my sound treatment acoustics in the studio and so used it much less.

Im getting a really boxy tone. Am i placing the mic to far in?
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 3 жыл бұрын
JustMamba Hi, the front of the microphone should be lined up with the front edges of the Reflexion Filter, with the microphone diaphragm positioned vertically and horizontally at the middle of the filter (looking from the front). You may have to adjust this setting a little bit (slightly higher, lower or set slighter further forward or back), depending on the exact microphone you are using. Do a test recording with your mic/filter setup positioned in the middle of your room (assuming this area of the room is not cluttered), then a second test recording with your mic/filter setup in your preferred position in your room, to ensure your preferred position for your mic/filter setup is not causing any recording problems. You may also want to do a couple of test recordings with the singer standing closer and further away from the mic/filter setup to find the best recording position.

Smashing video...do all these reflection filters fit to the stand in a similar way?..Iv'e just ordered one by Nordell and wondered if the process is the same...thanks
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 3 жыл бұрын
Noffley Puggs Thanks 😀👍 The Se reflexion filter has a slightly different set up than other filters. The Se clamps to the stand upright and shifts the microphone forward from the stand, which can make it a little unstable on mic stands that are not professional (expensive) mic stands. It's more likely your filter will attach to the mic mount thread on the mic stand and sit behind the stand while keeping the microphone mounted on the stand, which is better for lighter mic stands.

@@IbandUK Yeah thanks Trev...It came yesterday...yes it did mount on the upright...quite pleased with it seems to work well...although I was already surrounded by heavy velvet curtains which absorb a lot of stuff...still worth it though

Chaseonehunnit I have not tested an eyeball with the filter so I can't really say for sure. How much better would also depend on the microphone and the room.

Any suggestions on a good mic stand to use? Mine doesn't seem to be able to hold the filter and the mic, too heavy. Any recommendations? 😊

KatMusic Hi, thank you for your question. I don't actually use a mic stand myself, I use a Pearl heavy duty tom stand and an extended length Pearl tom arm. You might just be able to see it in the background of my video. Possibly the closest mic stand to my set up would be the K&M 21411 heavy duty mic stand, it's worth checking out but I haven't ever used one so I can't say I am able to officially recommend it. The K&M ST212 is the boom arm version.

ibandUK, Thank you for taking the time making this video i do appreciated. What type of stand microphone are you using? i'm thinking to buy me a reflexion filter im not a professional guy but im just staring. Not sure jet between SE Reflexion filter or Aston Microphones Halo Shadow I know its big difference in price but more important is mic stand. Are you using a Round Base Microphone Stand or a Tripod Mic Stand. Thank you for your reply!!!

Gilbert Miranda Hi, thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you like my video. For my video I connected the reflexion filter to a sturdy tripod microphone stand and I would be happy to use it regularly with that sturdy tripod microphone stand. I actually have a heavy duty pearl tom stand (you might just see it in the background of my video) from my days of playing pearl drums (I play Mapex now) and I have the reflexion filter connected to that.

Thanks for the video! I'm looking for something that will reduce the ability of people to hear me singing vocal takes from outside the room of a house, especially since I do this with headphones and it's totally out of context for bystanders. Will this attenuate the sound of my singing from inside a room with closed door fairly well? I'm far less worried about reverb but I suppose this is a benefit too. Mostly I'm looking for some recording privacy. Thanks!
@IbandUK
@IbandUK 2 жыл бұрын
spacep0d Hi, while a reflexion filter will inevitably absorb a little bit of sound by the very nature of its design, it is really only going to reduce the amount of sound in close proximity to the microphone and do very little to reduce the overall volume of noise in the room. You really need some sound absorption materials. The cheapest, and probably most radical way, is to sing under your duvet or inside a sleeping bag... But more effectively, the more soft furnishings in the room, the more sound will be absorbed (there is good reason why traditional recording studios were built in basements - all that soil around the walls absorbs loads of sound). If you want to go the whole hog you could build yourself a sound booth (basically a box big enough for you get inside that has all the inside walls padded with soft materials). Its also worth considering that if you turn down the volume in your headphones, you will naturally singing less loudly (which can improve the quality of the recording). Of course, the obvious benefit of stopping sound getting out also stops sound getting in, which means less unwanted noise on your vocal recordings 😀

M P Hi, thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you like my video. Sadly I don't have a Reflexion Filter SPACE available to me but if one does come may way I certainly will do a setup video. The SPACE is a larger version and the filter connects to the clamp with two knob bolts instead of screwing onto the support bar but otherwise the setup is more or less the same as the Pro.

Crystal Films Hi, thank you for your comment. The filter is designed to reduce reflections rather than act as sound absorption, so it does take a very professional ear to hear the difference (I've been a sound engineer for 40 years) and probably isn't helped by the sound compression required on videos on this platform (so pro headphones required when listening to this video). The filter does however reduce reflections, making the sound engineer's job a little easier. I have no affiliation with the makers of the filter, so have no axe to grind, but I do personally think the vocals are cleaner with the filter and therefore easier to mix.
