Is the Rodecaster Pro Really Worth It?

Live music performance is still my bread and butter. I bought the RP2 in January. I use it to mix my vocal, guitar, and foot percussion, with output to my Bose S1 Pro. I push the record button to get the pre audio, which I edit in Audacity before adding to my show video. I use one Bank 1 pad to turn reverb off when I speak between songs. I use the third Bank of pads for MIDI control of video that plays behind me. I love this thing!

@@bass4512 On Mondays, I set my RCP2 and MacBook Air (2012 🥲) back up at home. I have a USB-C to USB-A cable. I put the RCP2 into Transfer Mode, and copy the file folders from my weekend sets into an external SSD attached to my MacBook. I open Audacity on the MacBook and the WAV file for the set I want to edit. I copy each song individually to a new project to “chop” up the set into songs. I normalize, very lightly compress, and add reverb to taste. Then I export each song to WAV and MP3. I upload WAV to my Bandcamp page to allow fans to download. When I edit a song video from a show, I pull in the MP3 for that song and sync it with the video.

@@bass4512 for the MIDI, I use CommandPost to convert MIDI signals to my MacBook Air into keyboard actions. My videos play in VLC, another free app. I program my Bank 3 on the RCP2 so that each pad sends a different MIDI command. In CommandPost, I program the responses to those commands. Each response clears the VLC playlist and loads a new one for the given song. I don't currently time my songs, or trigger changes. I'll add that later, after I build a MIDI foot controller to mount on my stompbox (percussion)

I am definitely someone who bought it knowing its overkill. I've been running a dual PC streaming set up for years and this has become the top hardware that has been able to tie all the sounds together. I don't use the recording features at all but this thing is still incredible

Game changer, didn’t think I’d really need it, and I hate to say the words I don’t wanna live without it because they’re much more important things in life but for this simplifying workflow, really producing great audio with lots of extra options, especially no cloud, lifter, or fat head needed this device. At this moment at my station i work for, we are using the Rodecaster pro 2 for tv production. We did hook it up to a Newtek Tricaster Mini 4K. The mediaplayers play through the rodecaster. The microphones run trough the Rodecaster and we created a mix minus for the floor monitor. And it all works like a charm all trough one USB connection. The reason why we use the Rodecaster Pro 2 is because of the microphone processing. It works pretty fine with the Sennheiser ME40 clip on's. I would say for a small productions setup, get de Pro 2. I know lots of people now using it for radio broadcasts because you can use the midi buttons for player starts.

I've been running sound for 5 decades! I thought I retired in December 2019 and I purchased an RCP 1 with 2 Procaster Mics in retirement I was going to do a Podcast. Besides adding a Cloudlifter, everything I needed was built into it was amazing. In live and studio work, we have racks of EQ and Compressor, Noice Gates, and all kinds of processing and this thing has a lot of that stuff built in. After about 6 weeks, COVID hit, and my phone was ringing off the wall to help people up their Zoom call and set up a video streaming system. Then a Foundation asked me to set up their studio, then to Produce their show (were on Direct TV as well as KZbin/Rumble. I went with the newer RCP2 as it had proper LINE Outputs. I gave my original RCP to someone who could never afford it and got an RCP2 for myself didn't want to have to keep up with two devices! For the money, there is nothing as good for several applications. You now have the option with the new Rode NT1 5th Generation if your a single operator.

Tom, your videos have been very, very helpful. I anticipate your new videos daily. I have a Rodecaster Pro and upgraded to the Rodecaster Pro 2 simply because I am so impressed with the original. I am so very pleased with the Pro 2. What a great upgrade. I will be keeping the original and passing it on to another member of my team. Rode products are in my opinion amazing. I am able to create content that is very professional and notice my own progression as I continue to create more content. It is true, you have to be a disaster before you become a master. Practice matters. I forced myself to create and produce regardless of the quality and watched my own quality improve. Tom, your encouragement has made a vast difference in my own creation and production skills. I am moving from amateur to professional levels. That said, there is always room for improvement. Thanks for the reviews and your sharing your own experiences. You come across as humble yet highly informative.

I bought it for a Podcast and how it made the Podmic sound was insane. But it's pretty expensive and huge. The NT1 5th gen came out with some of the same processing built in so I returned the RCPII and bought that. However the experiencing of using that mic and the software was NO BUENO. So now I might be buying the RCPII once again. Like you advised me Tom, I should have never got rid of it.

I bought mine when you first reviewed it when it came out, I still am amazed that I have this powerful flexible audio tool. Whenever they have firmware updates I get excited to see what it can do next. I only plug in one mic but I set it up too use my phone over Bluetooth to do Twitter spaces so I sound great. I also use the other faders one from my second Mac to play audio sounds while I stream to discord video chats. It’s great while using Ecamm for my other channel. Great product Thanks Tom

For me the Rodecaster Pro 2 has been worth every penny and more. I not only use it for podcasts etc, it has now become my main studio audio interface which is something i never even anticipated when i bought it. I much prefer using the faders to adjust my levels than the tiny rotary knobs on my Presonus Studio 1810c and i love the flexibility of the unit and the assignability of the smart drum pads. Don't forget that you can also directly record into the unit. The unit is also visually pleasing to the eye and i love the old school mixer like design. Definitely worth it.

You mentioned the Podtrak P4 as a cheap alternative. In fact, this is the only one I can find that has 4 mic inputs and 4 headphone outputs, in other words, for recording a 4 person podcast you either have the P4, or have to spend the big dollars on a Tascam, P8 or the Rodecaster 1 or 2. Both Rodecasters are still available and even second hand first gens go for big money (between €400,- and €450,- here on marketplace) I think a Rodecaster Mini would be a killer. About half the width of the big one, three maybe four sliders and only four pads. Makes it a lot more portable too. Just recording 4 persons like the Podtrak P4 can would be nice, but in a more reliable and sturdy solution, and with the proper firmware support that Rode gives this fills the gap between a 200 euro P4 and a 600 euro Rodecaster. The Tascam isn’t much cheaper (€500 ish I believe), and it is not much smaller either. If they would make the mini easy to be coupled to the big one, you can use it as a channel expander as well. Oh well, just a crazy idea.

I started with RCP I and now I grow up with the RCP II. I love the workflow with the Podcaster Pro. In Germany the Rodecaster Pro II ist still expensive but for this package of opportunities it is ok. I use the Rodecaster for Interviews, Podcast Recordings, Recording: Guitar, Bass and Vocals and sometimes to have some fun with my kids.

The Mixcast 4 occasionally goes on sale for $300. But the RCP2 also goes on sale. It was $550 at B&H around the holidays. Or a Roland UVC-02 (which I never see covered) gives you an xlr input AND and HDMI for a camera. But if you have an SM7B, just get an RCP2. The amps will save you over having to get lifters, plus all those extra things for free.

Read before you buy: I ordered the rodecaster pro II a while back because of the DSPs which would simplify my audio chain by combining all my effects and interface into one. The reason I sent it back after 2 days is because this thing does NOT have realtime monitoring, causing the monitoring to be distracting and not give an accurate idea of what you sound like. This limitation effectively made it useless to me. It would've been such a gem if it did have realtime monitoring. Furthermore I have had issues finding reviewers accurately describing the realtime monitoring of it. Only after experiencing the issue first hand and searching for it specifically I found a Reddit thread of others alike that were disappointed by it.

I had the exact same issues on my RCPII and returned it because of that. I asked RODE and they told me that the product development team already is aware of the issue and maybe there will be a fix sometime. They also replied "Please be note that the latency on headphone monitoring is comparable with other digital products of this type. Some people find this more noticeable than others, but increasing the volume of your headphones or moving closer to the microphone will both help."

To decrease the flange echo that you get when you have near real time monitoring you can turn up the volume of your headphones beyond the level of your own voice. Which to me is a band-aid fix and required me to have to increase my headphones to ear-damaging levels. Regarding the proximity to my mic; I'm using an SM7B so I'm pretty much always eating it. It's nice they're aware of the issue, lets hope for a fix. I suppose I am spoiled by my RME Babyface

Excellent video Tom. I'm about to start working for a community radio station where we'll be pre recording our weekly 1 hour program and sending it to the station to be broadcast at our specified time. I've done plenty of radio preproduction work in my studio using my DAW for editing but I found that I was spending way too much time editing and refining my segments. I want an easy way to simply plug a couple of mics, easily record interviews using my phone, assigning program themes, segments and songs to pads and then easily mix down the show to a stereo master file to send to the radio station. The fact that you can also record multi-track is great for the times when I want to go my DAW for further refinement and editing. Can you please confirm that there's no longer any time limitations when it comes to recording and exporting multi-track files as is the case with polywave files. Keep up the great work!

I was originally going to get a smaller audio interface for $180 but then saw there were limitations with the amount of gain and saw I needed a cloud lifter for another $150-180. That's already a price of $320 and I hate adding layers of problems if one device can solve it all. I ended up going for the Rode Caster Pro ii and it's amazing! My audio went from B grade to A Grade, instantly.

Thanks Tom! The great point is knowing what you need. I want clean preamps and audio routing and the kitchen sink. The RCP2 now cover those things and I own the Lewitt connect 6 also and it has some nice DSP's and routing and the software is ultra intuitive. In the end a big YES!!! the RCP2 is well worth it's money.

I have both and I love them! They solve so many problems for me. If Rode made a RCP3, I’d only get it if it had AI to edit the podcast for you 😆I’m just so happy with them. The RCP2 especially, it can handle anything I throw at it.

As a former streamer who stoped because of time i used/still use a GO XLR for managing voice chat, games and background music which i still use because i love phisical faders. Now over 3 years it kinda isn't what it was when it was new (if that make sense) so i am opting on a new interface even if i'm currently not streaming but what to have phisical faders plus all the featues when using a XLR mic. I've seen your videos on the RCPII and they kinda sold it to me. I just now have to get one and see if it fits me.

I just sold my Rodecaster Pro 2, and I had the 1, but upgraded it last year. The core reasons that I chose to get rid of it were the following: 1. Size. Just took up way to much space. Also, I use this for work and I really didn't need 4 mics. I thought I would use it, but it wasn't ever used in 3 or 4 years now. 2. Support for certain software. I use Camtasia, SnagIT and a few other tools associated with Slack. I would normally record a 1 to 20 minute video 1 to 5 times a day if the software didn't give me so much grief. That was until I finally found out that Camtasia simply doesn't support Rodecaster devices on a MAC. Works perfect on a PC, but one of the latest iterations of Mac OS updates, it just stopped working in Camtasia. Then I connected with Camtasia support, and they conformed "known conflicts with XLR interfaces. 3. When I would join a Zoom, there was always a 5 second delay before people would hear me on the call. I do about 15 to 25 calls per week, and getting the "hey we can't hear you 20 times a week just got way old. What I will miss: Being plugged into my PC and Mac, and this was just great. But even this was a bit of an issue because there is a "dominant" USB-C connection, and that means some functionality would be lost if your other system was not primary. It also shows up with both a primary and a sub mix item in your devices list, and so can be confusing because on one system it is Primary, the other is Chat. Depends, but that was occasionally confusing when troubleshooting issues. Moving off to a Beacn Mic to get most of the EQ stuff, pure USB-C as this works fantastic on software connected tools like Camtasia and your devices. Always instant on.

I'm coming from the Mixcast4 and I was really pleased with the quality there, until the RCPII came out and I saw…not the hype, but the features, the screen, the updates and the follow up by Røde that, for the moment, cannot be matched by any other company. Then I bought it and it's been a pleasure to use every second. I tried to be really critical, and I do need to go deeper in the settings, Gating, Compression, EQ, I get lost sometimes in all options, but that's me more than the unit itself. I have a pro interface by Arturia (AudioFuse Studio) but I started using the RCPII for everything. The Arturia is fabulous but needs a DAW, a computer that can cope with all nice plugins, it's definitely not a plug & play thing like the RodeCaster, that can also record everything going in. Nope my good sire, I just cannot find a single negative point with the RCPII.

I'm definitely saving up for the Rodecaster Pro II. At the moment I'm using a Focusrite 8i6 and it serves me pretty well but it's kind of limited. The included software is terrible!!! I don't regret buying it as I needed something at the time but I wish that I had waited to get the Rodecaster Pro.

The Mixcast is super solid and $300 is a lot of money, so if it's working for you, then no reason to worry! But if you think you'll regret it once the 45 day window passes, then it might be worth to "buy once, cry once."

Since I got a Mixpre 3 I haven’t touched my rcp2. I don’t do live stuff at home so the dsp is not really needed as I prefer to add it afterwards. Also for the few times I do go live which is mostly at my work having sound devices mix assist plugin to auto lower mics not in use, is far more useful than adding compression and a gate for a good live sound. Also the real time monitoring latency on the rcp2 is just shameful for the money. If presonus can nail latency with dsp on £120 revelator I don’t know why Røde are struggling with latency issues.

Now I'm thinking to the Rodecaster Pro, and I was thinking, now this device take audio via USB as an input, do you think I can connect a second Rodecaster Pro to another one using the USB? That's a really good question! I haven't tried running a second one via USB, but I'm doubtful it would work since I don't think they'll communicate to each other the same way that a computer will to create audio input/output selections via USB. Using the line in or running the monitor outputs into one of the XLR channels is probably still the overall best way to connect two Rodecasters.

I like mine a lot as I've professed here before, it's my go to piece for streaming. BUT!!! when I'm just recording audio I use my Electrovoice RE20 going through a DBX 286s and 131s. I love the sound and Flexibility. Streaming the Rodecaster runs circles around the Yamaha MG10Xu that I repurposed from my old rig that I record my bass and drum tracks through.

Yesterday I had my first in studio guest. I had effects on 2 channels on my rcp 1. When I would speak into one mic it would sound more “roomy” when I muted the other mic the mic I spoke into sounded fine. Also one of my channels had feedback. Nothing connected into it. I’m saddened my rcp 1 has went to crap. It’s never been mishandled. Long story short with a question. Would you recommend me getting the rcp 2 or duo? I usually stream alone and if I get a guest may just be one or 2 others. I use the usb / phone channels on the rcp the most with a little bt too. * maybe if I got the duo and needed a extra channel or two I could plug in the rcp 1? Fortunately it'll work with any VESA mount, which is absolutely awesome. I was using a standard cheap monitor arm for al long time, but recently switched to this longer one to add a bit more reach. The RCP2 is relatively light compared to most computer displays, so there's really no need to fork over a ton of money for a super heavy duty arm.

I was using Voicemeeter combined with an Icon Platform M+ midi DAW surface before the Rødecaster Pro II was launched. The original Rødecaster Pro didn't really suit for my streaming setup (I have it). The Rødecaster Pro II fixed all that was missing.

I think a great video concept is how you can use both a Rødecaster Pro 2 and an Elgato Stream Deck together for Livestreams, or which one is a better option to use! I have both, and some people I know say that my potential setup (because I'm still building the Studio) is overkill.

1. I don't believe in overkill! 😁 Seriously, if it helps you to do what you want, you're having fun, and you're not putting yourself in a financially risky situation, then I say go for it! 2. As for Stream Deck and RCP, they're really two very different devices with almost no overlap, so it totally makes sense to use them together. The RCP is a high quality interface that handles all audio input/output routing, whereas the Stream Deck is essentially a customizable keyboard to help keep things fast and efficient. It's a great combo!

I’ll be connecting both to my iMac 27” that has a lot of power. So now knowing that I can run both together, and they don’t overlap on every feature is assurance that I made the right investment. I have the first version, and i like it more, except the pre-amps.. and phisical buttons for effects of sound pads..Even if version 2 faders can be assigned, i prefer more faders..and 3,5mm jack in front for headphones.. ..we tend to be too perfeccionists, but @Podcastage has a great advice video..: " No One Cares About Your Audio Gear ".. And as long, like you say, @Tom Buck , it serves our needs, it's ok.. I agree!

Tom, I always appreciate your prospective on audio and video equipment. This video really helped. While I see all the great features of the Rodecaster Pro, I agree with Heather it would be overkill for me. Something like the Focusrite Vocaster II will better meet my needs for now and the foreseeable future. I’m one of those who’s on a strict budget and manufactures don’t send me free products. I do need to improve my audio for my KZbin channels so I’ve been considering all kinds of microphones and interfaces. Your videos have been very helpful. While there are some excellent condenser microphone choices available including the Lewitt 220 and Rode’s new NT-1 5th Generation I don’t have a “quiet” room to record in. I’m afraid I’d get too much background noise so I’m thinking that I need a dynamic mic. As of today my thoughts are leaning toward a Rode Procaster microphone and pair it with a Focusrite Vocaster II. That combination will work for both voiceover work for my videos as well allow me to use the Procaster directly with my Canon camera when I want it in the shot.

That would definitely be a good combo! I didn't mention it in this video because I don't have one, but the elgato Wave XLR is another great single channel interface option (although I REALLY love the Vocaster Two).

I started out with a Zoom Podtrak P4, but saved up money for several months and just recently upgraded to a RCP II. I'll keep the P4 around for portability, but I don't like how Zoom never upgrades their firmware apart from measly little hotfixes. Also, I find the RCP II to be much more user-friendly and the processors are very intuitive, easy to use, and work in real-time. (I like how you get immediate audio and visual feedback on how the processors are working and you can quickly adjust the settings to suit you. It's so much better than using the Audacity menus.) Plus, they cut a ton of steps out of my Audacity workflow.

Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words. Between the mics you're looking at, I don't think you can go wrong. The MV7 and the Q9u have the added benefit of XLR, which could be nice if you need it. You might want to take a look at Rode's new NT-1 5Th gen too.

Hello My Rodecaster Pro 2 Guru. I have a question because I can't find I KZbin video on this. Currently our Rodecaster Pro 2 has been erasing all our sound pads. Even our custom sounds. All Gone. So, we have to do a factory reset. I've reached out to Rode but I haven't heard anything back. My students aren't doing it so we think its something the Rodecaster is doing it. Thoughts? Hast this happened to you?

This hasn't happened to me, but definitely doesn't sound right. If it's resetting every time you shut it down, then it almost seems like there's an issue with the internal memory? It should be covered by warranty, but of course that only helps if Rode gets back to you. They're normally super good about that, so I'd send another email if it's been a few days and you haven't heard anything. Or heck, even tweet at them and get their attention that way if you need to.

even though I've been using the iD44 MK2 and iConnectivity 4C..with software mixer...but, as you said, I prefer certain kinda physical controlling... besides, Rodecaster Pro II has more function than Mixcast4 and Podtrak P8 which I used before.. Great video as always.

I've had the Rcp2 on my whishlist for a while and will get it once it gets an update that adds more virtual usb channels, like the GoXLR. I currently have a GoXLR for this exact reason, but it seems to have an issue with the mic preamp. Every mic I hook up to it, condenser or dynamic, sounds like it's wrapped in a thick blanket. The bass is completely blown out, and I need to EQ every single one extremely in the low end. The Goxlr's lack of a highpass filter isn't helping either. Warranty expired, so eagerly waiting for the RCP2 update that allows me to replace it.

Has anyone in here run into issues like this? I love mine, but after the most recent update, I run into issues stoping recording. After recording for more than 10 minutes I can’t stop without unplugging the device. I’ve also suddenly after the update run into crackling in my audio when recording. I’ve switched SD cards, and done a factory reset. Just want to know if I’m the only one.

Ooh, that doesn't sound right. I have the most recent firmware on mine and regularly record for 1-2 hours at a time. Maybe a reset will fix some sort of bug? Sorry to hear about that.

Based on my personal experience. I have to say that there may tons of improvements compared with the predecessor. But.... It's also have disadvantages like: top surface label issue which lifted up at top right side, exchanged physical to virtual faders, no more headphones port at front side, USB C connection for power supply, noisy mic preamp when no mic connected there, limited port for analog audio. That's my very subjective opinion.

Hi Tom, I was very excited with the RODECaster Pro II when it came out, I pre-ordered it. I had the RODECaster Pro (Original) prior to that. I must say, their Pro II firmware updates are a risk every time. I have had problems from 1.04 to 1.11, and am now at a point where I don't trust the updates and am not updating anymore because it kinda works as I want it to. I have had sound levels change drastically on update, lost monitor mute functionality, lost RODE app connectivity, lost wifi connectivity and a host of other problems. Their release log never cites my problems as fixed but somehow they will be after a few versions. Have you encountered anything like this? I have to say, I still have the original RODECaster in storage and it was a lot more stable. I would recommend it over the Pro II if stability is important. I don't really use the voice-changers and other quirks, but am too invested in my audio routing configuration to turn back at this point.

I haven't personally had any firmware issues, but there's definitely nothing wrong with waiting a bit after one comes out to see if there are any reports of issues. I don't know why some people encounter bugs while others don't, even on the same hardware 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wish they had a Rodecaster Pro XL with more XLR ports and more features for producers. Them removing the headphone jack in the front was a major thumbs down for me. As a producer, we don't want to take a headphone port from our clients.

Rodecaster Pro II does not have TRRS Line-In / Line-Out; is the big disadvantage for me. For which, I am always shying away from possessing it. I need to input sound from video receiver monitor to Rodecaster Proo II, which is not possible.

@@tombuck anyone worried about connections to the first version should go back in your videos when you had ten things connected and recorded drums, etc. I would enjoy the multi-port style xlr’s but the intention when I got it was to use for podcasting and an interface for multiple mics for my content creation. I run an output from a guitar pedal board to the phone input jack and have a balanced channel I can adjust with the fader 🎚️ woot!

There is a BIG problem that -in case you want to record/save as multitrack - any channel that is panned to the right (also stereo channels) is NOT recorded.... maybe interesting to check... Røde was able to replicate this issue... the stereo output is ok....

From a broad/general point of view, you're totally right. Even the Lewitt 440 that I'm using in this video picks up a bit more environmental sound than the 240.

@@tombuck Yes, that's where I started from, after your first video on the Lewitt 240 Pro, I was looking at other mics from Lewitt, and I found that the 240 Pro is a sweet spot for most of the content that goes up on the internet post compression. I am currently using the Maono AU-AO4, it's been a trusty companion for a few years now, but I plan on upgrading it by Q2-Q3 this year, and as of now I've decided on going the 240 Pro + the Audient Evo 4.

great video Tom. there's a new low-profile boom arm called the Thronmax S6 that you might wanna check out some time, it has a vertical extension arm which really sets its design apart from Elgato's, and it's cheaper too :)

Can the RCII take computer audio as an input and then route it back to the computer? I use a music source on my computer to play music at the beginning of my online class and during my breaks. Then, the intro to my class has its own music. I send all this over to zoom. But I have to manually stop the music source - which abruptly stops the music - then the intro music plays. I want to be able to fade the music source as the intro plays. Mind you, this is all being sent as consolidated audio out through Ecamm. Ugh. Thanks for the help!

Tom, On a previous video, done with Heather, the extendable mount that you used for the RCP II appeared to be different than the one you are currently using and recommending. The other one appeared to have a pneumatic or spring tension mechanism with vertical and horizontal adjustability where as this one only extends or provides mobility in the horizontal plane. Why did you change it to this one and could you briefly explain the pros and cons of each. I have been watching a lot of your content and really like your approach to things. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tom! I love your channel so much!! Just got the Rodecaster 2 for my studio and your channel has helped me make that decision. You're amazing. I do have an u related question though. I use Sony A73 cameras and they seem to over expose white colours a lot. When I cut down to accommodate the over exposed whites the darker colours in my scene suffer. I've noticed that your Main camera seems calm even with all the bright colours and lights. I've also noticed that the side camera seems to blast the bright colours. I know the two cameras you have used in this episode are not the same so here's my question. Do I need to get the camera you're using as your main camera in order to solve my problem? Thanks for the kind words! For your question, I use the FX3 and a7SIII as my two cameras, so they do have the same sensor. I've been struggling with exposure too. Lately I've been setting the ISO to 800 on my main camera and then using an ND filter to avoid overexposing. I don't have a filter that fits the lens on my side camera, so it's sometimes too bright. Shooting in S-log would probably help too, but I actually do like the camera's native colors.
