After riding the CRF 250 in South Africa Noraly realised that the Honda was far better suited to her needs. She used the Royal Enfield first because she started her love of motorcycle travel in India where it was the obvious choice. Thank God she will never feel the need to ride in straight lines on. I own a Himalayan and i live in rural Argentina. I use my bike to go hunting and fishing near my farm, check the fences, at least once a month i ride 300km one way to see my family in the sierras. The chassis and engine in this bike work perfectly well, very reliable and easy to maintain, not too uncomfortable either. I will always have a good word to say about Royal Enfield because they are one of the very few brands that price their bikes reasonably here in Argentina, so I'm not objective, but i really like the bike.

@MauriceTarantulas I didn't put any on because Ironically enough, I thought I was going to do more off-roading. 95% is black top. I saw on videos that the Givi bars get in the way of the oil filter. I only put front bags on the front bars. Everything else is stock. Finally got the Throttle position sensor set properly and this Himalayan runs like a dream. I lie awake in bed waiting for the sun to come up. More of a draw than the drums lately. Ride Safe

Actually rest is ok, got to 70ish with tent etc so enough for me. But yeah eventually will do the dna air filter n tec cam. (Well I told the local garage seemed a bit lumpy but maybe 2000 miles it will ride out..so far 1300 ish and does seem a bit looser). Can always stick it on their dyno in spring..

I bought the Himalayan for a summer commuter bike here in Chicago, some of my commute is on 55 mph roads and it handles it just fine. I used to have a Suzuki Bandit 1200 and it had a ton of power but you really can’t use it anywhere and if you do then you’re probably braking the speed limit by a ridiculous amount. This bike is so much fun to ride, you can rev the piss out of it to give you that sensation but not get yourself into trouble, plus I find myself exploring different routes because I can handle gravel roads and off road just fine. Another guy at work has a Harley and people always stop and look at my bike and tell me it’s cool and just ignore his bike. One of the biggest selling points for me is it’s super easy to work on, I did an oil & filter change and a valve adjustment while sipping my morning coffee. I don’t see what all the hate is about, would I want to take this on a cross country trip on interstates? Probably not, but I did all that when I was a much younger man and if I need to go that far or take a ton of stuff with me then that’s what a car is for (or if I had a pickup or a small utility trailer I’d bring it along to go exploring). People here talk about buying something used for cheaper or the same price, then go ahead, I’d bet that used RE motorcycles will be even cheaper down the road but for the money you spent on a used bike I have something brand new, I know I’m the only one who’s ridden it and it was broken in properly, I can work on it myself with basic hand tools, and it has a 2 year warranty, what’s to hate about that?

I think if you want a bike that easily does 70 and just ride it like you would probably drive a family car then it is a great bike. I had a 750 but I realised I never really went over 80 or accelerated hard often. The only thing I miss about the 750 is those fast overtakes. But mostly they were overtakes that I didn't need to be doing as I was already doing the speed limit. I get the buzz of fast acceleration but i got it out of my system and this bike fits the bill for me now.

That is exactly where I'm at. I have the INT650 and I'm not looking to go 100mph or do crazy fast overtakes anymore. I just really enjoy the ride and its the kind of bike that makes you look back at it every time you walk away just because it's so nice to look at.

This is it, I don't really get any pleasure from riding above 70mph, it's not about adrenaline for me so as someone who rides alone the Himalayan is just enough bike for me. Down the line I will probably end up getting something bigger again to enable me to take a passenger, but for now I'm enjoying put putting about.

I hear you loud and clear! I had a Honda CB300R for a while when I was "in between" big bikes and it was a hoot! As you quite rightly pointed out you can't rely on outright power to pull you through a corner so you have to adapt your riding style. The result is loads of fun. It's all about conservation of momentum and carrying appropriate corner speed - a skill that we might have forgotten a little bit as we've moved up through the power charts. Great write up Spite!

It's a good motorcycle. We ride because we love to ride. Slow, fast, or in between. I ride my 07' Sportster every day in Michigan, and I wish the thing was 100 lbs lighter! That Royal Enfield looks like a really good fit for a lot of people. (me too) I'm 60yrs down the road, and over powered motorcycles are a zero. I've owned and operated some really strong, fast, scary bikes ; ridden way past the limit on many county roads. The best time I've ever had riding was going fast on a "normal" motorcycle. That way, you test your riding skills and experience the joy of riding for yourself. Isn't that what it's all about? Thanks for sharing. J.

i honestly don't understand 75 MPH not being fast enough. I don't go 80-100 in my car, and it would be far more pleasant at that speed. I have my least fun riding above 70 MPH. Its windy, usually not scenic and just not fun. Maybe if I liked the giant cowled couches like Goldwings and Harleys, but I like mostly naked bikes and cruisers. I'd rather ride under 65 MPH which is so much more fun and pleasant

@@just_one_opinion It's a loaner bike and Spite didn't give a glowing review. He gave it an honest review as a great city bike and an ok off-roader. Others here in the comments section who actually live with these bikes, love them and I've seen those kinds of reviews everywhere. Used Japanese bikes are available at the same price but if you want a rugged, simple new bike this is a great option.

My favorite bikes were a 1976 Triumph Bonneville - if taught me how to work in and fix pretty much everything, and a modern Vespa ET4 150. The Vespa was amazing. Practical, Comfortable and easy to maintain. Frequently rode/commuted on the highway. My wife and I actually rode from San Diego to Hollywood, short trafficked highway rides (easy lane splitting), and scenic route 1 up the coast. I totally get the ‘management’ of momentum at 65+ . But most of the time (in SoCal), congested freeways translate to slower speeds. The 411 seems like a blend of my two favorite rides.

I have a modified Himalayan and enjoy every second I spend on it. She’s not fast but does what she’s supposed to do. I commute on it (and my other bikes) which involves a stretch of 70mph. It handles it just fine but taps out at 84mph (that’s redline in 5th). It’s a fun bike, not a great bike but it’s a bike that is seriously a joy to ride. I really wish they would make a Super Himalayan like they did the Super Meteor.

I use the Tripper all the time in my Meteor 350. But it is better for urban use than road travelling. For that I have a Quad Lock and my Samsung Note 20. The software side has been updated and it is much more functional now. I wish the tripper could use different watch (analog) faces when is is not navigating, though. Good video, bring the Meteor 350 review man!

I'm in my second year of Scram 411 ownership, and you nailed the "best user" for this bike. I'm (still) a noob, this is my first bike, I live in a town where I spend virtually no time on the Interstate (Boise, Idaho), and there are tons of fire and logging roads to explore 15 minutes away in the foothills. This is the perfect "riding around town, with occasional trips to the woods" bike. I would highly recommend it as a first bike for just about anyone. I would NOT recommend it for anyone who needs that interstate speed or who is a very experienced rider.

I don't like small engines. When I overtake something which is sometimes the case I want to get it done as fast and safe as possible. Often people claim 47hp is enough. It is unless you need to overtake something. It doesn't build speed very fast at all. It will go the speed you require it just won't ever get to that speed very fast.

I have ridden bikes for over 30 years (I don't own a car and never have) and the Scram has attracted more positive comments than any of my other bikes (mostly cruisers). I don't use the tripper and the fuel gauge is rubbish but apart from that, it is a great bike.

If you keep your expectations low the Tripper is actually handy, it's not perfect but the fact that it's just there ready to go means it's really convenient if you want to go point to point quickly.

What do you think about it vs a RE classic 350 for a first bike that I might occasionally have ~20 miles on a 60 mph interstate once I feel more comfortable? I am 42, uninterested in high speed riding, and have just always wanted the flying sensation.

The 350 and the 411 will both hit 60mph so I would go for the one that you like the look of. I use mine for daily 20 mile commute but this is all on city roads. I have taken it on the motorway, where it will get to 70mph but I wouldn't want to be doing that on a regular basis.

It might have scrambler styling, but it's a town bike at heart. In England, town roads are full of holes and sunken drain covers, so this style of bike is ideal (except for the lake of storage).

Honestly I would like a ~40HP engine for the Himalayan. Would make it a lot more desirable. Also I would take the Versys 300 any day over the scram, more power which lets it handle highways better, and all around more useful.

Prior to delivery, I asked the dealer to install DP sintered brake pads on my '22 Himi, and the bike brakes very well. Front brake performance seriously improved for around $30. I could see someone also upgrading the master and rear cylinders and/or swapping out the standard brake lines for braided. Btw, no squealing with the DPs. 100 percent quiet. Love the bike. Very chill compared to my highly modified Sportster 1200 that always wants to jump out of the gate and always wants to go way faster than the speed limits! Love both the RE and the Harley. Like any bikes, you can spend as much as you like modifying them, or just enjoying as is. Plenty of "top mods" videos out there for recommendations from folks that own them.

I owned a Himalayan for a year and just got rid of it because it simply cannot cope with the traffic in my area (Texas). Speed limits are 70-75mph (even on the backroads) and these bikes just cannot do it. They are perfect for backroads, around town, and offroad if you can stay at around 60mph or less, but anything other than that they just cannot cope.

The more I ride mine the more I enjoy it. At first I had trouble getting up to, and keeping, it at around 80. Now I hit the limiter at 85 all the time(cam & exhaust). You cant zip ahead of someone with a quick flick but other than that it handles the highway fine. I ride my Monkey on the hwy plenty and still pass TONS of people easily. My brakes havent seemed too bad but I have some new pads coming in so we'll see how they feel after that. I think it'll help tremendously. I believe they are removing the tripper due to people using phones and other gps units. The thing I hate about it is that it brightens for "day" mode at 7am which is a little too early and it ends up shining right up at you. Will be worse once time changes. RE replied to me once and then never again even after a follow up.

I really love the design of the Scram in that red and white color scheme, but the 411 engine feels a bit redundant now that they have the new 350's going. If you don't have to deal with dirt roads the cheaper Hunter 350 is a better choice I reckon. Even then, I think that if I'm gonna buy a RE for my first bike, I'd get a 650.

The CEATs on the Himalayan and the SCRAM are very different...the SCRAM has 60-40 road-biased tyres...which is why they arent the best off-road!

I had the Himalayan and eventually had to chop it in for something with more oomph when my commute started to involve a lot of highway riding. It and the Scram are great bikes to ride, friendly, reassuring, solid, but just too goddamn slow. Back roads and off road are where these bikes are built for, it's where they thrive. If they made one with some more power, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

A 650 Super Scrambler or Super Himmy that can keep up on the highway would be great, especially if they went back to a tachometer, if Royal Enfield can keep them in stock. Most offroad capable 500-700cc bikes are unobtainium where I live besides the DR 650 and the KLR.

Thanks for the video! The closest Interstate to me is over 90 miles away. The highways are 55 MPH too. Thinking about getting one of these just ride around in the country twisties and dirt roads. Don't need to go 140, do stopies, nor wheelies. Just want to ride peacefully with the ability to go off the beaten path but not pure speed dirt biking.

Momentem - it's the key to all riding - Back in the 1960's, in Winnipeg, we were able to get a sub-100cc motorcycle licence at age 14 - so we all did and got little bkes - mine was a 1966 85cc Kawasaki 2 stroke single "Scrambler" style bike. With 10.5 claimed HP, and topping out at 60-ish mph, momentem was the only way to ride. We always made every effort to keep the throttle cranked and touching the brakes - never ! We tried riding across the city without stopping, or putting your feet down...there was a 1/2 dozen of us young hooligan riders at our school, and by the end of high school, we had all moved on to DT-1's after we turned 16. In my senior year, I had 1 of 5 DT-1's in the parking lot, and it was wheelie time after school heading out!

I found it because I have been trying to figure out why so many low milage and I mean Really Low Milage RE Scrams are for sale locally at what appears to be super low pricing. I believe you were able to hit the nail on the head with your review. Now I understand. The people who bought them made a horrific mistake by purchasing them with much higher than reasonable expectations of what that machine is actually capable of. To me and my use case, yeah its a little underwhelming..But ya know what isn't? The new Bear 650 BABY!!! Its not as scramblery no, but its close enough for me to drive it down home on the hundreds of miles of national forest I grew up in. 10 miles of single lane, whoopty doo, pited, washed out road to my childhood home with 3 cattle guards and gosh knows what else, is perfect for the bear. Shout out to that street version of the bobcat...the Road cat!

I own a Enfield Classic 500 and I rode a Himalayan in the mountains for 10 days. It could handle anything but on the highway it was a wee bit underpowered. I am waiting for the 450 Scram which should be a better fit for me.

The lack of speed/learning to carry speed is something I found during my time on 125cc's here in the UK. I was on a CBT license (restricted to 125cc, no highways, no passenger, must have an 'L-Plate' displayed) and when your absolute top speed is 75mph and the realistic, usable top speed is 65-70mph, on faster roads, you learn how to maintain momentum and plan WAAAYYY ahead. Making an overtake of a lorry doing 56mph on a two-lane, 60mph road requires very effective planning if you want to avoid a car parked up your butt getting rather annoyed. In fact, when I got my full license, I found our highways easy, because the bike I was on had so much more overtake potential but I was still programmed to plan my moves based on little to no additional pace. It's one of the reasons I'm a big advocate of the A2 license; younger/less experienced riders can access something cool that suits their tastes without being stuck with either a 125, or something insane.

Highest speed limit in the USA is 85 mph on 1 stretch of highway outside of Houston, TX. Typical highway speed is between 55-65 mph. Depending on the weight of the rider, this bike should have more than enough power. Obviously, more engine displacement is needed to offset the increased rider displacement since so many American riders are overweight. That said, excellent review. You were pretty darn objective. At 6'2" I'm surprised you were able to ride it and with stock tires I was even more surprised you made it through all that mud.

me at 25, living on my own, don't make a lot of money watching this review after going to the dealership and sitting on a multitude of bikes just to find the scram 411. I like it most in terms of sitting on it, just being comfortable is a big deal for me compared to the Himalayan witch was very uncomfortable. Mind you I don't have my motorcycle license yet. I enjoy your review and thankyou for the modest review compared to a few others that seem to be a bit more aggressive of not liking this bike. Im ok with it not being a speed demon or alot of flare if I felt the need to get the kit I may do that. But for my first bike it beats the idea of a Honda shadow.

You know, this was very kind to what is fundamentally a very lackluster motorcycle. However, I have to say in my stable I still find myself grabbing this over triumph or Yamaha to take out and thrash on. It is kind of the truest scrambler. It is not as fast as a sport bike, or as comfortable as a touring, or as equipped as an adventure bike, or as capable as a dual sport dirtbike. As a Swiss Army knife, though, it goes anywhere and does anything. I never worry about getting sidetracked down a dirt road or bouncing around town or how easy it is to fix on the roadside or damaging it while goofing off. Every single other bike I own works better than this one but this one does everything.

The problem with the U.S. folk is thinking bikes need more and more horse power. Simple bikes like these are coming to stay all around the world. Even Honda noticed it and launched the new XR 150L. Also, stop comparing apples to oranges such as Ninja 400 to Scram 411. Despite the similar CCs and pricepoint they have nothing in common. A person buying this bike wouldn't even care about a sport bike. Look around out of the U.S. bubble and think about the impact of having smaller and more fuel efficient bikes. It's all about what you can do with little money. You can have as much fun as spending 25 grand on a 1200GS with the right atitude

About the tripper not working, if you have your phone on a battery saver mode and close your screen, it turns off your background location checks, effectively rendering any kind of navigation useless.

As far as maintenance goes there is going to be more as compared to it’s similar sized Japanese counterparts. Valve checks/adjustments and oil changes are ever 3k miles, after the 1st 600 mile service. The good thing is because we are dealing with ancient equipment it’s all really easy to do yourself.

This vs the versys 300 is no contest. The versys will leave it behind every time. Better breaks, better engine, better built in wind protection and removable luggage, full dash, great sound.. I'm disappointed in the blind hate for the versys. I have a T7 myself, and I tried the Himalayan and found it very top heavy in comparison. The versys is weightless compared to it.

Great to be able to hear the motor. Buut just for me I would love to know the speed in MPH. I have the 2013 Scram 411 and my engine sounds like it is coming apart at 60mph. I've ridden 500 miles and have yet to go over 60mph because I scared the motor will not handle it.

Rode one of these that belongs to a mate a couple of weeks ago. I was disappointed in almost every way one possibly can be. It is functional but so underpowered that I would have no use for one. Never been an R.E. fan and can't understand how this thing made it past QA. I have a 1983 Kawasaki 250cc single cylinder that goes harder, rides more comfortably and looks better than this thing. Honestly, the opening is exactly what I’m looking for. Nowhere I need to go faster than 70 on it, and if I do I’ll take the Husky. Looks good, and affordable daily rider to get me out of my car MORE than my current 650 does. My 06 Ninja 250 was just 28HP at the rear wheel, and that was plenty of power for 99% of what I ever asked it to do. It could do 75 on the highway all day long without even working too hard, and it could hit 100 in the exceedingly rare instances that was the thing to do. My only problem is that I started riding with guys on bigger bikes who liked to cruise 80-85 for long stretches on the highway, and that had it burning oil and being unhappy. I guess what I'm saying, it that 24HP will get the job done just fine for most riders, 95% of the time.

Your points are well taken. For anything other than freeways 24hp is sufficient. I would point out though that the Ninja 250 is a far better freeway bike than this tall, very upright, very unfaired thumper, could ever hope to be. The aerodynamics make a huge difference at speed and that last 4hp is what let's you have even a little passing power at 70mph.

The KLR650 is anything but powerful but it can cruise the highway comfortably with it's 40 HP. This Scram weighs almost the same as it(if not more)with almost half the power and again.... the KLR is a slow bike lol

I think if they refresh the engine and update this bike. They should get the hp/trq to about 32/32 split and loose about 5-10 lbs it would be perfect for most people .

I bought a 2023 Himalayan last weekend. Even with me being 250lbs it motors along at 55-60 beautifully. Long steep hills require a downshift. But overall, it is a fun machine and I am elated with the purchase.

Royal Enfield says that the Himalayan Scram 411 is supposed to essentially be the "street version" of the regular Himalayan. It's not actually meant to be a dedicated off-road bike. The regular Himalayan is supposed to be the off-roader, it would seem.
