Happy New year Stu!. I hope that you are doing well. I guess that you know that rtings.com issued recently the results of the tests of the Sennheiser 6xx. www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/sennheiser/hd-6xx Unsurprisingly it scores very high...but surprisingly the results are different from the HD650, concluding that they are not exactly the same Headphones. So once more it was proved that you are a pioneer, my friend!. You were the only one among all reviewers who always said that the sound profile of the 6xxs was not identical to the HD650 :-). I also wanted to share with you that I finally decided to step ahead and bought a tube amplifier (Feliks Echo) to use with the 6xxs. It is a high quality amplifier, hand-made in Europe (but still not very expensive). The Echo together with the Arcam rDAC have brought the 6xxs to another level. This combo adds detail and clarity and punchiness to the bass, and overall gives more depth and richness to the sound. The 6xxs have turned from being vocal-focused headphones into all-rounders where everything that you throw at them sounds really wonderful. I think I hit the jackpot and reached my end game. Best regards and keep on with the good work!

WOWW. That's really quite a surprise, said me, never. Haha yeah man, a lot of people argued with me about that over the last couple of years and got pretty mad about it. To me, the 650 was warmer and more laid back while the 6XX sounded snappier and livelier. I thought that was pretty obvious. I always thought the 6XX was a perfect balance between the too forward 600 and the too syrupy 650 (hence why I recommend it first for every budding audiophile starting out). homestudiobasics.com/the-5-best-audiophile-headphones-for-under-500/ I've always said that in videos and articles. Thank you so much for acknowledging this and what an amazing compliment! I may make another video going over this as sort of an updated A/B comparison and also throw in the 58X since I'm purchasing it for the giveaway. So yeah, let the Memento memes commence "DON'T BELIEVE THEIR LIES" 😂 That's so great man! I too am trying to get an Amp for the studio to call my own, similar to what you have. Perhaps I should try it out!

Hey man! I haven't had any experience with that joint. Looks dope, though. I have it up here in a browser tab. I'm pretty close to being decided on the Motu M2 myself for the updated studio. I had a Scarlett 2i2 first gen for a long time before having to sell it (various reasons). I have a pic here of things so far: homestudiobasics.com/intro-setup/ What mic are you rockin'? I also had to sell my LSR305's but I was researching and I keep coming back to them, lol. I may get the Yamaha HS7 but they are pretty steep for me at the moment. Any other suggestions?

Hi Stu. Thanks for your review. There’s no doubt that the HD6XX are good value for money. They do seem to please for their good middle frequency response and listener comfort too. However it seems that the sound stage is at best narrow and lacking in depth, from what I’ve read. Is this fair comment? Do any of the Sennheisers have a good sound stage? Maybe the amplifier makes a difference in this regard. Does anyone have any experience to share on this topic?
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Arthur! Yeah the Soundstage on the 600 isn't that great but most people knew that. The 650 did actually improve on it a bit, as I really enjoyed it for gaming and movies and was surprised how well it worked. Sounds were spaced out better and imaging was improved. Also mentioned this in the video! I found that a couple of amplifiers did help the 600's out: iFi's xCAN and xDSD both have the 3D+ feature which opened things up pretty nicely. I could actually listen to and enjoy Jazz after that. The other amp is the G6, which has the Scout Mode feature and SBX. These modes also help SS and imaging.

I am using the k550 currently, is this a significant upgrade in comparison? And if I buy this with the atom, can I just connect it to a pc without purchasing another dac?
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! It's just a different type of sound. The K550 is more open and airy sounding (as you know), with a pretty above average Soundstage, especially for a closed back. The 6XX is more boxed in sounding, but still has better SS than the HD600. Both the 550 and 6XX are incredibly neutral headphones. I'll never turn someone away from trying an HD6XX though, as it's still my #1 recommendation in the hobby. Check out my article, it may help you pull the trigger on one. homestudiobasics.com/the-5-best-audiophile-headphones-for-under-500/ I firmly believe it's worth it for everyone to have a 600 series model in their possession. I've had an HD600 since 2016 and don't plan on ever selling it if that's any indication. Let me know your thoughts and if I can help out further :)

#WantToAsk I had v-moda m100 as daily device... a week ago I decided to buy openback headphones for my second device, after do some research the choice is between 6xx & sundara, and because I already have dynamic driver headphones so I decided to buy Sundara, of course I'm at blind buy by assuming Sundara would be better than 6xx ... am I in the right choice?

I'm sure the 6xx and planars will sound different. I've heard anecdotally that there are serious quality control issues with hifiman products. Stu has done several hifiman reviews. He likes them I believe (he was going on about I believe how planars really allow you to hear the timbre of instruments). I was initially keen on getting some planars for the experience. I was very interested in the Sundaras. A friend had some planar IEMs (from audeze, who make stuff like the LCD-1, which some people love e.g. metal571). In a brief, completely superficial audition I thought my friend's IEMs sounded sterile. Planars are to my understanding fast, precise and detailed. Be caution about the earcup shape of the hifiman products (circular). I don't like feeling my ears touching the inside of ear cups or the headphone etc.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Hey!! I think you made a great choice. The Sundara is my second pick on the Top 5: homestudiobasics.com/the-5-best-audiophile-headphones-for-under-500/ HiFiMan headphones are really hard to talk about though, because it's a bit Jekyll and Hyde. The only reason it's second and not first is because of what Gary alluded to; the fact that you really never know what you're going to get with one as far as build quality. You could theoretically luck out and never have any issues with your Sundara (and I hope you don't). You may have an issue with the terminations into the ear cups and the sound sometimes cutting out. I really hope they fix this moving forward. It may not manifest in all models and really depends. The Sundara overall is an extremely well built product though for the most part. They did make it a lot more robust than the older model 400i and 400S, but this time around the cups don't swivel. You may not even care about that. It was just a design choice. As far as sound, yeah, the Sundara has better bass extension, better Soundstage, and just generally sounds better because it is a planar magnetic headphone. They tend to perform better than dynamics like the 6XX because the sound is more realistic, more natural, and there's better instrument Timbre across the board (how an instrument may sound in real life vs. through a device). Comfort is also very good. I prefer a 6XX but it's kind of a toss up. You'll likely be very satisfied with how they fit and feel on your head. Also keep in mind what Gary said: The shape of them is a bit awkward and depending on the size of your ears you'll find them touching. I don't mind it too much as the pads are super comfy, but your mileage may vary. Do you have an amp to power them? Let me know!!

Just received mine a week ago from Drop. Cost me an additional 70 Dollars in import taxes grrr...UK buyers beware. Bought a balanced cable from amazon and feel they are driven better through it. Initially I was unimpressed by the sound going from the AKG702/7xx's and the fidelio X2HRs plus the clamping force was ridiculous but after a little headband adjustment and gentle EQ Ive been chilling reading a book listening to music with these for the last few evenings and they are really growing on me. There is something about them I cannot put my finger on but they sound premium. They are not as aggressive as the Fidelios or wide as the the K7**'s but they are in their own right great sounding. Glad I listened to your recommendation and got some. Now just for a pair of HifiMan Sundaro's and Beyers (I am torn between 880 and 990 edition currently) and my collection of top 5 is complete! Guns N' roses Sound awesome through them!!
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah man! My pleasure and so glad to help out. What you're hearing is that they're just "right." There's really no other way to describe the sound of a 6XX/600 series headphone. It's sound in it's most pure and correct form. Nothing more nothing less. I have the K702's because of that very reason; sometimes I want a wider Soundstage and a bit more air for Jazz and other quieter Genres (Acoustic guitars sound incredible with a 702), but also gaming and Netflix. I also have a 9500 because well, price to performance ratio is through the roof and I bought one in 2017 so I've had it awhile. I'd really like to get my hands on an X2HR for comparison to the 9500 actually. Hey did you happen to purchase a 6XX through one of my links? If not that's okay but if so thank you so much! I'd be eternally grateful if you did the same when you eventually get the Sundara. You're really going to love that one as well as there's nothing quite like a planar magnetic. Hmm.. If you prefer a more neutral sound I'd probably steer you towards the 880. 990 is kind of a bass head can with a super bright treble but to be fair the 880 is relatively bright also. I'd say it's like the semi-open version of the Sony MDR V6, perhaps a bit of an upgrade even. What do you think?

I entered the headphone scene with the 6XX as my first purchase and I honestly think you cannot overstate the class of these cans. I made every bang-for-buck decision along the way and right now I'm powering them with the JDS atom with a FiiO K3 as DAC (looking to upgrade, would love a suggestion). I don't like throwing around the term 'endgame', especially with my lacking experience, but I would honestly find it hard to believe it gets much better than this without throwing some serious cash into diminishing returns. Great vid as always loverboy, fuck Mr Metal
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
No no no! We love metal. I was just poking some fun at him :D ;) :) You're totally right though, it's hard to justify purchasing much more than the set up you mention. I think audiophiles get jaded real quick and then decide "Well there must be something better." In reality, it doesn't get that much better. Not enough to warrant the wank fest we're currently seeing in audio. You know who I'm talking about - those lame reviewers who get hundreds of thousands of views while shilling products that maybe make like a .01% difference. They fancy their titles and thumbnails up and make it irresistible to the unassuming guy. They even use.. ARROWS. Lol. THIS DAC IS THE DEAL. OF. THE. CENTURY. Arrow arrow arrow arrow. XD That is, until the next one. :P The problem is that it's never enough. I'm perfectly satisfied with what I have now so it's that much more of a blast to make fun of shills and people who make such bold claims when, in reality, you're still forking over your kidney for like a .05% increase in pleasure. Suggestions for an upgrade? Lol. Well lemme tell you man, if you just spend like $500 more I think you'll finally be happy. Just a little more man. I know you can do it. It's not that big of a deal (no pun intended). Don't look at it like flushing money down a toilet. Just think how it will make you feel. Ha seriously though.. I don't know what's better than that. Maybe a Mojo? In reality, the Mojo is like the only exception past $100-300 that I would even consider is an actual upgrade in terms of sound. Diminishing returns tends to kick in way faster with Amps and DACs, and I'm dead serious when I say that they're completely and entirely overrated. I don't care. It's all so stupid. Since when did a DAC become more important than how the song was recorded? People are now placing more value on it than the actual headphones! It's just crazy and I will keep saying it over and over again. It comes to a point where you actually want to start pissing people off. Sorry for the rant. :D

Hey man thank you! I haven't actually used these with the 2i2, but I used to have a first generation and I actually really liked it with the headphones I had at the time (Audio Technica M50). It does have a bit of a higher output impedance, (specs indication less than 10) which actually may do pretty well with these! I remember plugging in my HD600's and the 2i2 def gave off a warmer tone. If it's your first foray into Amps and DACS, I may recommend you a neutral solid state, but there's nothing wrong with purchasing the 6XX sand trying it with the 2i2 if you already have one lying around. Hey man Haven't heard 560S but likely yes if it's anything like the 599 or 598. HD6XX/650 actually have pretty decent Soundstage (better than the 600 anyway), but I'm not sure I'd use it full time for gaming. 6XX's sound is just so pure. I love it for pretty much everything. @@HomeStudioBasics Yes sorry for the very late answere I didn't get a notice. They are amazing the best headphones I have ever heard (Its my first hifi headphone, the rest are gaming headsets that are even more expensive) and with plenty of bass. Though in some games I think the sound can be a bit to bright but for the money they are amazing. I use them with the dragonfly red the g6 was for my little brother and + a philips 9500 too. And they are great for movies too. If I where to upgrade are there better headphones that still would work for gaming and movies too? I am thinking of upgrading my dac too because I don't think the dragonfly red is good enough for my dali rubicon 2 speakers but maybe I am wrong. Thinking of the burson playmate 2. For both the speakers and the headphones. Edit also have philips modified the 9500 to and s version or something? Is my pair from 2021 different from yours from 2017 or was it 2019? I think it may be a misplaced 9600 review on the 9500 amazone page.

Hey there! Not a dumb question actually. You could actually use your phone's dac into a JDS amp like the ATOM via 3.5mm interconnect. I suppose it would depend on how good the dac is on your phone though. What kind of phone is it? And yeah you can use the 6XX with your phone but I would personally not just plug it into mine as there likely won't be enough power to drive it loud enough. I'd also just plan on getting a DAC + Amp or a dac/amp combo all at once because it will save you headaches down the road. It's just good practice to pair a good dac with a good amp. Hi mister Home studio basics, I’m looking to buy a portable dac amp for my hd 6xx’s. For me the hip dac, the nx4dsd and the dragonfly red would be the same price. The things I’m most looking for are clarity, all around. I listen to jazz, classical, some beatles and some electronic music by Röyksopp (happy up here for example). I feel when I plug it into my laptop and phone, especially the low end gets muddy. This is most prominent in the jazz I listen to as it is quite busy and things get ‘dumped together’. What would be your (or any knowledgable viewer) reccomendation? Would love to hear from you!:)

Well that's an interesting can of worms lol. I've caught some heat on this channel for my love affair with the 9500, but it's mostly fun to just annoy people because they get so butt hurt about it. It's definitely an interesting comparison though my friend. As an upgrade? I don't know. That's a really tough question actually. Soundstage is definitely better on the 9500. Bass is lean on the 9500 but still sounds really good. I think it rolls off a bit harder than the 6XX. The mids on he 6XX are def better than they were on the 600. The upper mid/low treble area has always been the point of contention on the 9500 and yeah, it can be a bit essy but I have always thought that sentiment was way overblown, esp. when you can just EQ it down a couple dB or use an amp with a bit higher output impedance. Just my opinion, people got mad. The treble on the 9500 is definitely brighter than a 6XX. As a true upgrade? It's hard to say. The 9500 for it's price is just an absolute steal, but they're basically also giving away the 6XX at this point. I like having both around (I have the 600), but I would say that yeah, I tend to listen to my 600 more often than I do a 9500 although recently the 9500 reminded me yet again of why it's so good. @@pegun Yeah as far as that goes, a Bottlehead Crack or Darkvoice 336 are great options, but there's nothing wrong with using a ruler flat solid state amp like an Objective 2 or ATOM. Solid state is a bit more reliable over the long term and will present the headphones as they are. If you think that's what you're after, I'd go that route. You can always mess with tubes later. It's great to just have a good Solid State around. That's just my opinion though. Most people start out that way and add later on. What do you think? @@HomeStudioBasics please don't take offence but i'd prefer not to. I'd have to ship them intercontinentally and i do use them in parallel to the hd599. I only use the hd599 because they came with a long cable (i can't use the hd58x in bed when watching movies, etc, due to the lack of reach). I think they're good (the 58x) but what do i know. I'm not an audiophile. I don't even have a dac/amp yet :( i wanted to get the dx3 pro (due to audio science review's amazing review of them) but the v2 has an increased output impedance (10ohms) would could cause distortion on lower impedance headphones (not confirmed but theoretically). Also, there have been some concerns about topping reliability too. I honestly don't know what to get for a dac/amp. The atom's amazing (going on all the reviews) but I kinda wanted a dac and an optical in (so i could in theory cut out any USB input issues). There are so many dac amps, i just don't know what to go for. I know we've talked previously about this but i didn't rate the dragonfly red (more detail but felt it was trebly). Then there's the whole portability issue - i wanted better audio than my mobo but couldn't really find a happy medium between desktop and having something to compliment my phone output. Anyway, back to the HD58x - I know metal doesn't rate them (or at least in comparison to the hd6xx). I did deliberate about getting the hd6xx but came to the conclusion they're close enough (to the 58x) to mean it's not worth the investment. That's why i started looking at planars. I might as well go for something which breaks new territory.

I personally think it is (Overrated), but only for Audiophiles. For anyone else it's the best in class. Granted the 58X was reduced to $129 recently. for that price i'd buy it, but having since moved up and developed a fondness for Planars over dynamics I would seriously suggest the Verum 1 as your first Audiophile headphone - even if its more than double the price. Granted you might still like Dynamic drivers, I have just mostly abandoned them at least until I can eventually afford the Clear - though I will more than likely use it far, far less and more so for nostalgic reasons - Kind of like returning to an old radio or listening to lofi music. For this purpose though the 6XX just doesn't cut it, it's just too flabby and dull. Granted I don't even know if the Clear is that dissimilar, though people seriously seem to think so.

@HomeStudioBasics 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah man planars are def a cut above although it's not night and day. It's still very subtle, but definitely noticeable. Timbre and resolution are better than dynamic headphones and they just sound slightly more realistic. That's the thing though; I always somehow return to the hd600/58x/6xx and still love it. It's a weird thing for sure and I don't know exactly what to make of that. I don't think the 6XX sounds flabby/dull, but the 650 def can come across like that. I wasn't impressed with the Clear for that price but it's been awhile since I've heard it. I will be going back and trying it again at some point.

As for your question, man that's tough. I haven't really come across anything quite like it. Transients are incredibly fast, as it's perhaps THE best headphone for Metal and Progressive Rock like Chon, Plini, Animals as Leaders, etc.. These are all the headphones I've demoed: homestudiobasics.com/headphone-reviews-comparisons/ and out of those, I really can't say there's anything that compares as far as how tight and fast the bass is. Some people may think I'm crazy, but the original M50 is the only one I can think of that had that sort of lively, fast character with a thumping sick bass. Nowadays I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much knowing what I know about neutrality, but I will never ever knock the headphone like others have. I have only fond memories of my time with it. Yeah the P7 is horrible lol. One of the worst headphones I've ever tried. I did like the P9 though. The Focal Listen are really really good.. haven't heard the Meze but Audio Advice here in my hometown carries them so I def want to try those out soon. Looking at the Listen vs. 99 on Tyll's graph. Treble is very similar and there's the same sort of roll off after 1k, but the bass looks different. On the 99 it rolls off considerably after about 40Hz, Listen has basically no roll off. More on that in a sec. M50x of course is great.. My original M50's had too much treble but the x toned it down. Good question! I'd have to listen to the Meze first, but the Listen was a headphone that is pretty severely underrated. It's been awhile since I heard one but I remember the bass was pretty much perfect. It wasn't quite like anything I've ever heard, done a bit differently. Virtually no roll off, but there's a dip around 100 Hz that comes back up around 200. So there's a little "V" in there but it's more like a "U". It's just done incredibly well imo. The sound signature somehow was able to be lively and exciting but also smooth and laid back at the same time. Very non fatiguing. Treble is a bit darker and knows it's place; definitely not overly bright. I think you will love it. It's one of those headphones that you can listen to for awhile without feeling like any one particular frequency is out of line. Similar to a PM3 actually, though the PM3's mids don't roll off after 1k and the bass is a flat line.

Absolutely man! Crazy good value. I paid over $300 for my HD600's back in 2016. Nowadays good audio is getting much cheaper, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Curse because it sends people down the upgrade-itis rabbit hole faster lol. I guess that's debatable though, and you can look at it from 2 perspectives: 1) If you have a pretty good inclination that what you have is just about as good as it gets, you may not have a desire to venture down the hole, or 2) Because what you have sounds so good, you get curious about "higher end" gear that supposedly sounds even better and get sucked in that way. I'm fortunate in that I've had the chance to demo a lot of gear so I know that in the grand scheme of things, paying more is mostly overrated and you won't notice that much of a difference due to diminishing returns and all that.

Most nonaudiophiles would agree with you I think... some audiophiles get caught up on the top end of the 4xx. Sheepskin pads help a bit with that though and the staging in the 4xx kills the 6xx. Different strokes for different folks though.

Haha seriously though. Here's my copy paste from another comment: ========== I would recommend the 4XX over the 6XX if not for the treble. It's just kind of unforgivable almost lol. Tends to ruin certain tracks. I will say it does outclass the 600 series aside from that. Everything is better: Timbre, Soundstage, Bass extension, etc. and it sounds more buttery smooth and organic. There's nothing quite like a planar headphone. The build of a HifiMan also tends to hold me back from recommending it because that's super important as well. You just never know what you're gonna get. Very Jekyll and Hyde. 4XX is probably the most reliable though out of the bunch (aside from the headband adjustment issue which happened on inToit's pair). Comfort I'd rather have the 6XX though I love the 400 series with the original pads or the hybrids. Sheepskins' aren't intimate enough for me. I need a warm hug and I'm not getting that with them XD. As a long term investment, I think the 6XX is the safer route and still sounds phenomenal, hence why I recommend it. Still thanks for stopping by and chiming in!!

I dont know about 6XX but all headphones from older HD 600-series are imo overrated AF, like every wannabe-audiophiles trophy number ones. And I think that the whole "scaling/synergy/etc"-thing around them is pretty much a meme which is probably based on when people started "finetuning" the sound more to their liking with tubes etc. I hope you get a chance to try out ATH-R70X some day, those are imo better than lets say 650!

let's be honest audiophile hobby is just liquid OCD, mainstream 30 dollar headphones are good enough for enjoying music
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man! I don't know about $30, but about $100 is 85% i.e. something like a V6/7506, I would consider the 6XX 95% of what the hobby represents, and the other 5% is like a good planar or a Utopia which I still probably wouldn't buy at that retail price but may consider it at a lower price, as the *last* headphone I ever purchase after selling everything else lol.
@ImWanderinIf
@ImWanderinIf 4 жыл бұрын
@@HomeStudioBasics i was getting into this hobby but i kinda stopped when i realised that when i am "in the zone" and enjoying music it doesn't really matter what headphones i use, i can enjoy music on a cheap headphone or on an expensive one, the truth is that there isn't that much difference between a cheap headphone and audiophile headphone today, both of them cover the entire useful sound spectrum and the frequency response is retalively close on all modern headphones, the expensive one gives more of the peripheral or marginal details that aren't really that essential for music enjoyment, if you think about it a 30 dollar headphone sounds better then everything on planet earth 70 years ago, and yet 70 years ago music industry was exploding and people were spending good money for a single song to listen on much worse quality than what a 30 dollar modern headphone gives, that's why i think that this hobby is mostly OCD and if anything this obsession with the holy grail of sound makes music less enjoyable cause you obsess over the sound quality too much, not saying that it's necessarily wrong to be an audiophile

Oh no you're absolutely 100% spot on with everything you said. It's a disease and I'm getting really sick of it actually. Esp. because of this whole measurement BS with dacs which is the single most idiotic thing that I've ever heard. I have zero f'ing interest in how a dac measures when I'm listening to music. In fact, you said verbatim what I said in my video here and it's nice to see that people are starting to realize all of this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKC1c6abp72Br80
