I see FWIW yeah, I just went through a 600, 650, 6XX, and 660S again recently and sold the 600 and 6XX to keep the other two. I also noticed not only the additional forwardness on the 600 but that additional grain there that you can't EQ out. I don't remember that at all, but I'm glad I went with the 650 now instead like you did lol. Also 6XX and 650 are basically identical sounding when I tried them back to back as well. I just wanted the prestige of owning a 650 instead, wew
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
First of all, what are you doing up at 4 am?! Lol. Yess. You can clearly hear that sort of grain side by side vs. a 600. It's like brash or sand papery or something. Haha nice. I actually thought the 6XX was crisper sounding but at the time of the demo I didn't have my friend Craig's 650 on hand so take that with a grain although I've listened to the 650 A LOT. The 6XX seemed to have more air around the instruments with this feathery like quality that I don't remember the 650 having. It didn't seem veiled at all by comparison. I actually love the 650 though and prefer it easily over the original 600. The 6XX/650 for me are just about the perfect audiophile headphones. I would like to try a 660S and 58X at some point. How would you describe those 2 in comparison? It's funny; now that I'm all alone with the 600 again I still like it. Edit: Nevermind jk 3k is annoying again lol. You do tend to start to resent headphones (as well as Amps and DACs) when you have others around to go back and forth with though. It's such a weird phenomena. #istillloveyou

@@HomeStudioBasics lol I think it was only like 1 something am when I wrote that. Had no idea you even had youtube reviews. What you're describing sounds like pad condition differences between the 650 and 6XX there, make sure the pads are absolutely new when you compare these things as they degrade quickly and hugely affect the treble forwardness and extension. The 660 and 58X aren't really related in sound quality at all since the 58X is grainier than all of the other 6x0 chassis stuff but I don't think the 660 is any more detailed than the 600 or 650 either, it's just got a different tuning and is easier to drive. Rtings graphs are pretty accurate to see the difference between those two, to make it easier to see. PS DUMMY THICC

@@metal571 Yeah home skillet! Been on YT for awhile now. Glad to see you stop by and comment! Definitely get what you're saying. I did check the pads and one was slightly worn in while the other was in fine shape. This was a loaner sent by one of my subs/regular readers Shawn Quint. What's funny is I put it side by side to the 600 and all 4 pads looked more or less the same. The 650's that I demo have worn in pads but they still sound laid back soooo.. Idk. Are you saying that you change out all the pads for your shootouts/comparisons before you review? If you do that's awesome. I definitely will keep that in mind for the future though as it is an excellent point. I'm going to check those graphs now. I do enjoy Ratings' measurements. PS METAL GEARRRRR

And most music doesnt even have that detail unless you rather listen to benchmarks all day. The hd800 sounds too bright, closed, and wrong. its very... uncalm to listen to. like the EQ is completely fungled up.

Look into getting a dark voice 336 or other OTL tube amp. They’re ideal for driving higher impedance headphones like the hd6xx. If you do definitely experiment with different vintage tubes as the ones they come with suck. Other otl tube amps: Bottle head crack (it’s a kit you build or you can pay extra to get one already built). La figaro 339 Woo audio wa2 and wa3 Little dot Mk ii and mkiii (I think) Schiit Valhalla 2 Also I recommend picking up an hd600. Depends on what you listen to. Hd600 I feel is better for contemporary stuff (Rock, indie, rap, electronic). hd6xx I think is better for jazz/classical/acoustic vocal stuff.

@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Woo that's a toughie! Right off the bat the 990 would be good but is the weak link between these three. A bit too much bass for mixing. The HD 600 is also good, but a bit of a dark treble. IMO you want some sparkle up top. The 880 is pretty much the perfect mixing can. For a long time I recommended the 600 and it's still a good choice, but I'd swap out the 600 and put the 880 in top spot nowadays. It's got a rolled off bass, but not abnormally so, with a perfect mid-range and brighter treble which is what you want mixing because it exposes flaws quicker. I still use the 600's daily but I'd go with the 880 here. It's a more even and predictable sound across the entire frequency spectrum. If you REALLY wanted to lean towards the 600 I'd def go with the 6XX instead. It's a near perfect headphone and super hard not to discuss here as well. Let me know your thoughts and If I can help out further!!

Hmm. Based on that I'd probably still go with the 880. The 6XX won't have quite as good of a Soundstage unfortunately. Are you looking for a good amount of bass, or perhaps you would rather hear the intricacies and nuance without the impact?

Maybe it's a sign not to buy them? (I wonder) After all, they are not that nicely built like the Senns. I read that those Mass Senns are manufactured in my country (Romania) and everything built here is shit in terms of quality. Do you recommend them? At the moment I have Sennheiser's HD598. Will it be a noticeable improvement? Edit: And oh, I somehow managed to find a new, unopened VHS cassette with the Pompei concert on ebay, I wonder how it resisted being sealed after so many years. :O

@@phaenius Sorry this is late. I didn't get notified of your response. Lol I didn't ask you if I looked like him. I said if you had said him I would have known that you thought I was attractive. ;) Haha if by "weird look" you mean I'm dead sexy, then you would be correct good sir :P Anyways enough of all that silliness. Nah man 6XX is built the exact same as the 600 and 650. It's cheaper and to me actually sounds a bit better than both. Definitely sounds better than a 600 no contest. It's supposed to be basically a clone of the 650 but I find it a bit less warm and a little crisper and snappier. Kind of like a cross between the 600 and 650. I would snag one for sure. $25 off right now at Drop: massdrop.7eer.net/2qJ4a Really an easy recommendation when you consider the price you're paying vs. the other 2. I have an HD600 still, but I wish I had the 6XX. It just sounds better to me. The mid-range is not as forward. That's the main takeaway. The 600's get annoying in the mids in a hurry. Still almost a perfect headphone though. I'm actually listening now with the 600 + Bravo Ocean into the DF Red as the DAC. Dope! *Petit Biscuit, Bipolar Sunshine, Cautious Clay* - Wake Up. Let me know what you decide! If you purchase one through my link I do get a kick back so it's much appreciated. Def keep me posted man!

Longtime audiophile here. I owned the 600 before this guy was born. The 600 cable is a better cable. 43.00 when it was available vs 11.00 for the 650 or 6XX. Don't worry that the 600 cable is thinner, it's actually stronger and sounds better on any of the 3. The 600 cable is reinforced with Kevlar the material used in bullet proof vests. As far as sound the 650 or 6XX is warmer but the 600 is neutral and more accurate. If you like the one that's more colored then go for it. The 600 has a long break in time. Turn the sound up to 3 oclock on your amp and let it burn in. 600 got a class A rating in Stereophile and it's sound described as electrostatic which is an accurate description. Much more neutral and detailed then the 650 or 6XX. If you want a good headphone amp for the money buy a Creek. Both these headphones are great. It's a matter of tastes or flavor. Don't listen to this guy. You might like the 600 more.

The 600 is not the better purchase nowadays my friend, sorry to say. Most people that get one will end up replacing the cable as well. It's not that it isn't strong. After running over it with my chair countless times I can agree with you on that. It's just long, super annoying, and constantly gets in the way. Also the 600 isn't more neutral; the mid-range on it is pushed too forward which has been confirmed by graphs and a plethora of other people. Pushed too forward does not equal neutral. So let's dispel that myth real quick. It's a flawed headphone. It's irritating and in your face (in the mids), while the 6XX is both more realistic, accurate, and neutral sounding. 650 is similar to 6XX but a bit warmer and more syrupy. The 6XX is the best out of the 3 because it sits right in the middle. It doesn't sound overly warm like the 650, nor does it sound too shouty like a 600. It's nice and crisp without being overbearing. Before the 6XX I would say sure, get a 650 or 600. But not now when you can pay a fraction of the price and get a better headphone. Go with a 6XX friends. Don't believe watchdog005 Joe's lies. XD I'm trying to save you money. He wants you to pay retail. Who do you trust more? :P kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5C8Zoh4aN2rjZo In all seriousness though, there's a reason why the 6XX is Drop's best seller and has near perfect reviews. It's basically the perfect audiophile headphone.

@@HomeStudioBasics LOL, the 6XX is an exact copy of the 650 just a little cheaper made but the sound is identical. If you want something between the 650 and 600 get the 660 though I don't care for it. The 600 is not flawed nor do any headphones have a flat frequency response like an amplifier, they all deviate from flat. No the midrange is not pushed forward, the bass response is rolled off slightly in the mid band and in the sub frequencies. Neither the 600 or 650 is a bad or flawed headphone. The only thing flawed is your hearing. The 600 is the original that received the highest praise class A ranking in Stereophile. Rarely does the remake beat the original that got race reviews, it's more to satisfy those who like the component with a different flavor. Some people like the coloration of a mid bass hump which is fine but it does take away from the original sound and in no way makes the 600 flawed. It's neutral not flawed. That's like saying I like Coke better then Pepsi because Pepsi is flawed. The 650 and 6XX are not neutral through the highs either like the 600 is. I'm not saying you're a bass freak but there are those who prefer a way exaggerated bass and don't care to hear what's actually recorded and reproduced accurately by neutral headphones. I don't base anything on measurements. Two components can measure the same and have two different sound qualities. If you think frequency response is what creates a great audiophile headphone you're wrong. You are not an audiophile and have a lot to learn and experience before you can call yourself an expert on reviewing a product.

@@watchdog005 Sorry for the late reply. Your response went into the spam folder and I didn't see it. You're just about the only person who won't acknowledge that the 600's mid-range is flawed and pushed too forward, so perhaps you're the one with hearing issues? Just a thought. I also didn't mention bass and treble anywhere in my response. I'm mostly focusing on the mid-range discrepancy between the 600 and 650. "LOL, the 6XX is an exact copy of the 650 just a little cheaper made but the sound is identical." "Two components can measure the same and have two different sound qualities." You kind of just proved my point. The sound of the 650 and 6XX is not identical to me, but: that's just my opinion. I can't exactly say why I perceive the 6XX to be crisper sounding and more lively, but those were my impressions. I never claimed to be an audiophile anywhere in my reviews or videos. I actually claim the opposite if you read and watch my content. I never said frequency response is what creates a great audiophile headphone, but I *am* saying that it definitely helps in verifying what you hear. I never called myself an expert either. I simply did a shootout video and gave my own impressions and conclusions of the 3 headphones. You're the one who's condescending down to me, as if you know everything. Maybe you should make a KZbin channel and give your own opinions? (I'm being serious) The mids on the 600 were too forward long before my own frequency sweeps verified that. Ratings' sweeps also confirm it, but even regardless, it's common knowledge and pretty much a universal consensus at this point. Anyways, we're going in circles here. I probably won't respond to this thread after this. You can disagree with me without coming off the way you do in your replies. There's a clear difference in the way you convey your stance vs. the way others have. Thanks for stopping by though. Have a great day!
