Is the Tamron 70-180MM F2.8 REALLY That Good?

If you haven’t heard, everyone should have a 70-200 in their lineup of lenses. It’s just a magical range and the photos that you can get from those glasses are just spectacular. For Sony, the benchmark has always been their G Master, but now we have Tamron in the mix, with their all new 70-180mm at the same F2.8
True, it lacks OSS, but 20mm at the long end… BUT
It’s much lighter, much more affordable, and in our testing? Perhaps just as superb an image quality, especially when paired with the Sony A9II.

Great review!, I have the 28-75mm f/2.8 and I'm working on the 17-28mm, this will complete the trinity for my a7III, I like sharpness and Tamron always delivers on that. The extras you get from the Sony lenses are insignificant to me and not worth the ridiculous prices they want. I've been using Tamron for more than 30 yrs. and they seem to just get better and better!

Have the 3 Tamron zoom lenses on a A7R3. With the savings from the Sony 70-200 GM you can buy the whole trinity from 17mm all the way up to 180mm. More discrete, light, stunning images.. If you want Sony quality go for fixed focal lenses or the 100-400 Gm for a good compromise for wildlife

Great Review just bought this lens.. and i agree not all of us have thousand of dollars to get gmaster lenses but we want to have great pictures with lenses that are in our budget..Nice job Tamron.

What are your thoughts on Tamron? in the long run with the wear and tear? With the extend barrel on the Tamron? Tossing up between the f4 70-200 Sony or this. I will be using it to film Sports like MMA, Rugby League and Basketball. Thanks in advanced for your feedback!

I feel confident with the Tamron lenses. While the build quality is different than the G Master lenses the materials used are still robust.

Great review! I use this lense on my Sony a7iii and it’s my all around lense, it’s great. I use a Sigma 18-35,1.8 with a Fotga canon converter ( works great).These 2 lenses cover just about everything I need with exceptional sharpness

What is the filter thread size on this? I only have the 17-28mm and the 28-70mm Tamron, having recently moved to my first mirrorless with the A7iii. I really liking and it enjoying it, but have had many situations, on almost every shoot since getting my new set up, that I’ve needed to get in further from a distance. I was looking at the 70- 200 Sony, but this lens seems much more practical and doable. Especially with the weight and price. I’d love to know the filter thread size, as the 2 lenses I have already are both 67mm, so if this one was also, that’d be what makes up my mind and gets me to purchase. I have the Nisi circular long exposure kit, an Urth variable ND8-128 for my video shooting and a K&F Circular Polariser. All are 67mm, so I hope this is also. After this or the Sony 70-200, the plan is to part exchange my old Dakar set up for the Tamron 150-500, for when I’m on bird/wildlife and Surfing specific shoots. I’m just undecided if it’s a good idea to only have Tamron Lenses as I’ve not tried any Sony, or other third party lenses so could be missing out. If anyone can tell me if this 70-180 is 67mm thread that’d be amazing! Cheers for your helpful and well done content… I’m subbed. Hi. It will also perform the same on the A7 series. Fujifilm has a different lens Mount so won’t be able to use this lens

I have this lens and just love it. This real world review is over the mark. I chose this over the sigma 85mm 1.4 which is an amazing lens and ill get tyat next. But im so glad i went with this tamron lens

Hey, thanks for that great Video. Currently i try to decide which lense I’m going to buy. Tamron 70-180 f2.8 or the also New Tamron 28-200mm f2.8-5.6. Currently I have the Sony 24-105 f4 but I need more range for horse photography and equestrian sport. Which Tamron (or other lense) would be better then my Sony lens? Equestrian tournaments are usually held outside. but sometimes also in riding halls that are less well lit. Which would you recommend?

the main problem is how busy the bokeh looks, which is a huge downer for a lot of professionals. I think i'll have to go with the G2 or the new Sigma because that bokeh is not really acceptable

Tough question but do you see Sony introducing an updated 70-200 gmaster? As a sports videographer its hard justifying an extra ~$1300 for an extra 20mm - stabilization/etc. Really in a pickle here when it comes to deciding which lens to get.

I don’t see it coming so soon to be honest. It’s still a strong seller and performer for Sony. Yes it’s tough to spend that kind of money for the extra 20mm, however you do video, Image stabilisation is important unless you are constantly rigging up your camera to a gimbal or something else. Something to consider in case. Having said that the weight reduction and size of the Tamron will be a benefit

I’m on the market for this zoom range and trying to decide if I jump the gun on the G Master or get the Tamron or Sogma.. I was told that if indeed I. Go for the sigma, I’d rather get the sogma art for Canon tans just use the MC11 instead of getting true one designated for Sony..any thoughts on this?

Hi. This review compares the Sony to the Tamron. The Sigma is a nice lens but adapted lenses never perform the same as a native mount lens. What type of photography do you do?

TECH360.TV landscape( just got the Sony 16-35mm 2.8.) and some portraits.which is why I am planning to get the 70-200mm f2.8 which is awesome for both landscape and portraits) I have the 35mm 1.4 & 85mm 1.8.. sigma just released some good lenses for Sony. (14-24mm f2.8,which I might get later on) and their 24-70mm f2.8..but never heard of they have 70-200mm for Sony

No 70-200 from Sigma yet. I would stay native e mount lenses especially now there are more options. I think the Tamron will definitely suit your style of photography

Depends. If you want tight headshots then I prefer longer than 100mm for most people (unless you just crop) but for outdoors and non tight headshots, I would go with the 85mm

I don’t like the telescopic lens, but I have the 17/28 IQ second to none, telescopic gives me pause. And the Sony 2/8 is starting to come down, but it does suffer from back focus issues occasionally. Weight is never an issue, truly. If the Sony was suddenly priced at equal to the price of the Tamron and every reviewer in the world will say how can you not buy the Sony irregardless of the weight.
