This sounds unnecessarily expensive and complicated. Why don't they just design it on a PC using some room simulator?
@ryhanon7
@ryhanon7 Жыл бұрын
@@Neomadra Typically they design it on a PC (using CAD or Unreal or something) and then jump into it using VR so they can walk around because that's a much better way to get a true sense of scale and presence in the set you're designing than walking around as if it's a flat FPS game. There are a few videos on KZbin that show how they this and explain *why* they do it (I think the first time I heard about it was for one of the John Wick movies).
@DoubleJumpPunch
@DoubleJumpPunch Жыл бұрын
@Neomadra Also, for this purpose, a decent VR setup is not expensive at all. Walking around a single static room is far less intensive than many PCVR games. And arguably by not having to physically rebuild parts of the set as much, VR design saves them money in the long run.

Some years back I worked for a construction and fit-out firm that did this too, but for pitching potential designs to clients. They did lots of cool models with unreal etc. anyway so it wasn't a big leap to get clients to visit a building when it was just a shell, wear a VR headset (actually also a backpack as that's where the PC was at the time) and experience what their building could be like when complete. Pretty cool

I think that for any device that is worn on your head that lightness should be one of the first key priority features that the designers go for. I understand that Apple like to use premium materials in their products to give them that 'Apple look and feel' but that clearly comes at a price of the comfort of the device. I know it's not bothersome for some people, but I used to have a pair of AirPods Max and I couldn't wear them for more than half an hour before I really started to notice the weight to the point where they became uncomfortable. I ended up replacing them with a pair of Sony WH-1000xm5's that are practically unnoticeable on my head due to them weighing basically nothing, BUT, they still feel like a premium product. It looks as though the Vision Pro might suffer the same weight issues as the AirPods Max for some users. Apple have proven in the past that they can use lightweight plastics and still make them look and feel premium (the iPhone 3G and 5C for example) so I wonder why they didn't go that route with the Vison Pro?
@freeman038

I personally think headset weight is the single most serious issue which prevents VR/AR from becoming more popular. Over last a few years hundreds of vendors tried hard to design head straps that are really good, but no one can fully solve comfortability problem. I don’t believe Apple can make any breakthrough in head strap design because, after all, this is not that high tech but more mechanical engineering. Could Apple use lighter and cheaper materials instead? My guess is they couldn’t because 1) too many cameras need good materials to support, it’s already fragile in current state; 2) using cheaper material might save 30% weight, but the result would still be on par with Quest, then why bother?
@Cr_nch
@Cr_nch Жыл бұрын
@@freeman038 Well they could potentially fix some of that fragility by not having a massive front-glass + screen, but that's only part of the issue.
@freeman038
@freeman038 Жыл бұрын
@@Cr_nch They probably could not. I think the very reason why Apple wanted to keep that stupid eyesight thing, was just to make Vision Pro had a somewhat transparent look in its ads and reviews. That effectively fooled people (even me) into believing Vision Pro is much lighter than other VR headsets, and can be used more like smart goggles. By keeping that useless feature, Apple cunningly hided the biggest drawback of their headset, and the depressing truth that even Apple had no magic power to solve the same issue that haunted the entire VR/AR market for so long.
@H.DISTRICT

I just said this to another person but the Valve Index weighs more than this and yet is very comfortable because it uses a rigid strap design. Cloth based strap are always terrible when it comes to comfort, and everyone gets rid of theirs the moment they get a Quest 2 and Quest 3 in favor of an aftermarket head strap.
@freeman038
@freeman038 Жыл бұрын
If they had made an “Apple Vision Helmet”, it would be much more comfortable even with two built-in batteries. A helmet design could even solve the outdoor portability problem: people can wear them on streets with auto-shut lens protection shields. Wearing helmets on streets is actually not that weird: many people wearing motorcycle helmets while walking. It could even be designed Darth Vader or stormtrooper style, which would instantly become a high tech fashion.

@@ralexand56It's all tradeoffs in the headset space. The BigScreen Beyond is 127g versus the Vision Pro at 650g. Apple probably could have knocked it down to 300-400g without impacting the user experience by ditching the lenticular glass and external facing display for EyeSight and swapping the metal chassis for plastic. That said, my Valve Index is 800g and it's the most comfortable headset I own between the Vive, Quest 2, Quest 3, and Index. I think it's because it use a rigid strap design with a larger surface area on the back of the head, so maybe after market headset straps will solve the weight issue with Apple's headset.

Speaking as a developer, I have messed around the Vision OS SDK and it is a crazy SDK. When build your application, you don't get your standard 2D screen with your UI. It renders an entire 3D environment for you to simulate the Vision Pro's spatial aspect. The renders are insane though, like almost photorealistic with different times of day. There is a toolbar at the bottom that is the there to simulate the hand gestures, and it is just not intuitive at all. With any simulator, it is better to get the device, but I'm a college student who can't afford a $3,500 headset to toy around with lol.

This like when people said AirPods Max were too heavy but people regularly wear those for 8+ hrs nowadays. I was told 12.9” iPad Pro was too unwieldy to use one handed, it’s not. And plastic wouldn’t have been the move, and if you don’t believe me just look at your AirPods case. I strongly believe the weight isn’t a dealbreaker; if anything it’s the distribution of weight which could be remedied by strapping the battery or a counterweight to the back strap (somehow).

Same here. I bought something off of Amazon that was similar to the dual loop band included with the AVP and it worked a lot better. The weight of the quest 2-3 was fine, it just how it was distributed. The weight was mostly resting on my tiny flat Asian nose which was beyond uncomfortable. But the dual loop band I got distributed the weight more my head and neck instead of just my nose itself. So it feels more like a helmet or heavy hat than anything else.

I think thats likely. The leaks about the headset for years mentioned an expensive dev kit as the initial launch and a cheaper version for consumers the year after. Knowing apple, they didn't want to release a product this expensive to develop and manufacture as a dev kit and opted to call it pro so that more people would buy it. From what I've seen developers are interested but I haven't actually anyone make anything for it yet with the simulators. It will probably be more than a year for them to come out with the cheaper one though considering all the delays with this version.

The comfort aspect of these devices is much more important than what the companies are providing. I know that my Quest 3 headset is not nearly as comfortable as my Quest 2 and consequently I quit use much sooner than with the Quest 2. So now the cost per minute of use goes up. For the Vision Pro that cost is way way up there to start with. If they're additionally uncomfortable after a short time then that can easily double the cost or even more. Thanks though for the great discussion. You've got a really likeable group to listen to.

Imagine if at Coachella or any festival there was a 360 degree camera on a tripod in the crowd, and you were able to chill in your house and see your favorite bands perform around the world with fully immersive surround sound at a fraction of the cost. It's a win for people who don't want to shell out for the insane current ticket prices, can't get tickets, or travel is too far. I too want to know this. If it just mirrors the mac screen, that will be ok but a bit of a let down. Im hoping for a screen that is adjustable in size, and screen space. For example. Stretch the screen from a virtual 2k screen to a larger screen with the pixel space of 4K, or maybe even 8k. This way I can use it like I use my work monitor, which is a 4K tv I essentially use as four 1080p monitors at once.

When it comes to eyesight and them not showing it during demos for people. To my understanding, you need to go through with creating your virtual avatar, and then you can use eyesight once it understands your virtual avatar. If that is accurate, it makes sense to me they didnt let people use that in their demos, as they probably didnt want to spend the time creating all these people’s virtual avatars, just for them to not even really see how it works for their own eyes. It’s not part of the experience for the user of Vision Pro, which I believe is what the demos are for, the user experience.

Apple has experience with ceramics from the Apple Watch and I wonder if this could be a future construction material for the Vision Pro. I didn’t see the value, but she did. People complain all the time… until the value is worth it. Apple sells experiences. This is why they rarely win on spec sheets. But the experience is is what makes people fork over the 💰💵💰. They also mentioned that this is a lot of money to spend on something that’s gonna sit on the shelf collecting dust. Trust me! It won’t. These guys don’t really understand Tech. They understand spec sheets, and prices. These guys also said they would never be caught dead in public wearing AirPods prior to launch. Some people just hate things until the mainstream says it’s ok to like it. Case in point, I’ve been using Quests for over 8 years. From the original Rift, to the Go, Pro, and 3. And prior to the VisionPro🥽 the quests were regarded as a toy. This is why Apple spent literally less than 20 seconds on the fact that the VisionPro🥽 has over 400 games available on launch day… not including the Xbox and PlayStation remote play apps. Now the people are trying to do what I was doing for years.. shoehorning my work into the quest. This is why my quest is in the shelf, it literally is a toy/console. Whereas the VisionPro🥽 is literally a Mac… full blown! My phone rings, I can just answer it in the VisionPro🥽. I can literally answer texts with iMessage. I mean you never have to take it off. These guys on this podcast regurgitate “Aaaaahhhhh only 2 hour battery life”, meanwhile I have a 24,000 mah portable charger that I carry with me everyday. There’s a solution for every issue they bring up.

Now that I think about it, Apple really made a wise decision with their launch. Because of the price, people are sceptical about the product and because they made it such a small launch at first, it'll give time for reviews and for developers to really get an idea of what to do with it and it'll probably end up drumming more hype for when they're ready to fully launch it. When people work at VR companies, they should build a "weight rig" that is just a minimalist frame that they can load up with weights at various locations, and attach straps to at various points, and just shift the weight around all they like, and the developers should have to wear one of these things ALL day as they work, and keep adjusting it until they don't mind it at all. Would a counterweight system make the device more tolerable? I’m thinking like the pro camera rigs that achieve “zero weight,” gimbal operation (I apologize if I’ve gotten the terminology wrong). Of course that significantly compounds the costs and the relative footprint and engineering such a system that allows full motion for both head and body would be astronomical. But it still seems like a possible solution until we have better technology.

A counterweight still needs a point of origin where its own weight is supported. You'd just be netting more weight to the end user. There's no magic solution here.
