What do y'all think, is this a motorcycle you'd recommend for a beginner?
@78Outlaw
@78Outlaw 3 жыл бұрын
Heeeeeeelllll no 😆 totally agree any rider has to develop balance, throttle control, full grip and palm grip and clutch, progressive braking. I don’t think any beginner should start on a 100bhp+ bike, those that think they can are the ones I worry about most, even if they MX from kids I’d still say build up. In U.K. under 21 year olds are restricted and tbh I think any beginner should. Ride safe folks.

I think you nailed it when you said self discipline.and feeling comfortable on the bike. I recently started back riding after being away for 36 years. It was almost like starting over again. At 6' 6" and 290 lbs the typical starter bike was not going to cut it. I ended up getting a Victory Vision Touring bike. It is big and heavy and powerful, but it just fit well. I started easy working on slow speed skill and have worked my way up. Now I don't feel the weight and am having fun with it. Knowing one's limitations is the key and being patient the recipe.

Couldn't agree more. I ended up with a Harley Road king special. 6'1, 225. Just fit me the best from the factory and I feel more confident on it compared to a smaller framed bike. Have been practicing slow speed maneuvers for the past month along with riding country roads.

this is why I love your channel @blockhead! Your points are dead on - especially about how forgiving the less powerful bikes are compared to the super bikes. I have been riding for 6 months now and am in that danger timeframe where my rider's confidence is probably more than my skillset; so I need to keep myself in check so I don't do something stupid that will lay my bike. Cheers man!

@noidontthinksolol
@noidontthinksolol Жыл бұрын
all this thing about power is a big bunch of BS, the thing that might catch beginners off guard is weight of the bike. the mt09 is not a crazy powerfull bike, it only has 119hp and not allot of bottom end. Sure it goes pretty well but you only go as fast as you open the throttle Its not too heavy so it wont be unwieldy even for shorter riders and the seating is upright. So the mt09 is actually a very good beginners bike. just like the hornet 900, which just about every motorcycle license school here in Belgium used to have.

As some other commenters below, I didn't ride for about 20 years and re-entered on an RC-46. Dang that thing is touchy, my driveway is gravel and I feel that it made it more challenging. I had a healthy respect for sure. My re-entry would have been much easier on something else.

Couldn't agree more about its whatever you feel comfortable on, I've had friends who are super chilled, know their limits and respect the bike etc that started straight onto 1000cc bikes with no issues. And I've had friends who are a little reckless that chose to start on smaller bikes as they knew they would get themselves into trouble. Prob 40% is down to the bike and 60% depends on what sort of character you are. That's just my opinion though

I have owned this bike for nearly 2 years. I had a bike before that, the Yamaha FZ-06. Wich was in my opinion a very good bike to start on. The MT09 is a super fun bike, but it's also a bike that begs you to open that throttle up and feel that rush of the torque it produces. And that's in B-mode or "normal". But it's also a very unforgiving bike if you let your ego take over or are overconfident in your skills (or lack thereof) when riding this rocket in traffic and you need to react quickly and precisely. I share @blockhead opinion that this is not a beginner bike for the majority of new riders. Loved the video like always!

“Is the mt09 a good beginning bike? No.” Me, a beginner, getting ready to pick up a 2014 fz09 tomorrow: 👁👄👁 I do consider myself to be safe and responsible though. I’m a pilot, scuba diver, and have owned firearms in the past so safety is always my #1 priority. I plan on starting slow and getting some slow speed maneuvers down, since I’ve heard that’s more challenging than riding in a straight line really fast. Don’t get me wrong, I want to have fun with the bike but that’ll come later once I’ve gotten much more comfortable and confident in my abilities. I’m trying to enjoy my motorcycle and use it for years, not kill myself by doing something stupid in the first week of owning it lol

Dude, do yourself a huge favor if you got the regular non SP model. Upgrade now to Ohlins suspension front and rear, EBC HH pads and rotors, and Dynojet PV3. It will completely transform your bike. The level of confidence and fun is worth it. You will need to upgrade the shock anyways in 8000 miles because they are not serviceable. AKA fake shocks. Also seat Concepts dot com will make your ass happy.

I rode dirt bikes a bit when I was a kid, but didn’t have much experience when I started riding on the streets. My first bike was a liter bike. In my view, if a bike fits you comfortably and you have discipline, I don’t see limiting yourself to smaller displacement bikes. People are often limited by funds and can’t keep trading up bikes. I’m 6’3” and smaller bikes are more difficult for me to ride, so I usually buy physically bigger bikes and just don’t treat my throttle like a light switch.

If you're responsible, and use your head and get to know the bike before doing hooligan shit, any bike is suitable. Considering if you're indeed comfortable on it. On the other end I say don't there's PLENTY of FUN choices with lower risks and just as much fun or more or a bit less fun then a higher cc bike.

Absolutely 100% yes with the SP model, if the bike physically fits you. That is #1 most important concern when choosing a bike. It needs to be comfortable to be safe. Speaking of safety, the base model of all MT models are not safe with very low quality parts that do kill people. They should be recalled. The SP model is better.

It sounds like that MT09 has a quick shifter like my Tiger. I think beginners should stay at or below 500cc for a while to get more skill development and take advanced courses. I got a z900 as my second bike, it was between this, and the z9. The two bikes are really similar and I just wanted to add my 2c. I highly highly recommend not getting this as a first bike. Riding a 300 for 2 years still didn't completely prepare me for one of these. They are absolute monsters. Every single mistake is amplified 10x, it's hard to focus on traffic when learning the new bike so there is another element of danger thrown in, when trying to learn throttle control, little bumps in the road will force the throttle open, giving you several bursts of speed you're trying to compensate for. I love my Z900 and the MT-09 is an incredible bike too, but I thin it would be one of the absolute worst choices for a beginner. Right behind a liter bike. They demand a respect that a new rider might not fully understand. I'm not a new rider, and god damn do I respect that 900. I'm scared of what it can do lol

There is very few bikes that are NOT beginner bikes (and at the same time there is no such thing as a beginner bike). I wrote dirt as a kid - and cafe racer as an adult. Then i got a supersport - The first day I took it out, I rode it to the end of the block and back (and put it back in the garage) Next day up and down the street; next day around the block; - first long trip was to the grocery store. Then the local gym - So yeah, take it slow - overly careful. You need to get use to your bike slowly - Give it time (when you look back; 2 yrs will have gone by)

@blockhead. “Short answer, nope” totally agree!! I started riding feb 2020, on a 1200cc sportster, and felt like I was on a rocket ship too. I still feel that she is a quick bike, but I had the opportunity to rent a BMW RnineT (not the dumbed down version. The origional) in ft Lauderdale while on family vacation. HOLY SHIT! I knew the beemer would be faster, but that bike is a rip your face off monster compared to my 20 year old sporty. I loved every min of it, but I would have killed myself if I had tried to ride it as a completely brand new rider.. and it doesn’t even touch the mt09 in brutality. Awesome vid!!

Hey, Blockhead! If any part of you is a Star Trek fan, then you've seen that thing before. It is a weapon called a "Bat'leth", a favorite weapon in hand-to-hand combat, of the Klingons. They are usually much longer than that one, usually about 5 feet long. Yours is a smaller version, called a "Mek'leth." Perfect for slaying your enemies, or for stopping some stupid idiot that may try to break kick your front door. It can also be used for other dangerous things, like opening packages! :)

I want for my next bike if I can get it early is the MT07. I want to go on a state to state ride with my wife and I need that bike to be new. Right meow I'm riding a used bought 2018 HOnda cb300f for fum, and for my deliveries. I really want an upgrade so badly. I was thinking about getting a Honda cb650r, but that motorcycle is way to expensive. I did some research and the Yamaha is the best affordable brand that I like.

Of course, this bike is not advisable for novice riders, and even the mt 07, which is the bike I have, I think it's too much for a novice rider, because in a way the 2 have almost the same max speed. the mt 09 being much faster from 120 km/h on,..but still I insist on saying that the mt 07 is good for novice riders,..and the bike is really light and very agile, but it walks a lot in my opinion, in addition to having a lot of torque at low rpm, however there is a limited version, but in my view for novice riders it is the 300cc to 500cc class with 30 to 50 hp which is already well enough for someone who is starting. Of course it also depends a lot from person to person, if you are a very responsible person I believe it can start with a 07 or something identical, especially if it comes from a 125cc or something similar, even so at the beginning you should take it easy,.. now one mt 09 only after having ridden a long time of 07 or something similar, because these motorcycles instigate to accelerate. they are addictive , although safe , walking very quickly increases the risks a lot , although I admit it ,... it is not easy to walk slowly with a mt ,...lol kkkk but with time,.. if you gain more marurity and if walks more normal,...

The front end "wanting to come up all of the time" is not a sign of loads of horsepower. People think that it is, but it is not. It's a problem of general suspension and chassis design/problems. If Honda really wanted to, for example, they could design a Grom that would wheelie at the slightest application of throttle.

It’s called a “high side”. It happens when you accelerate in a corner too fast, break traction on the rear wheel, the wheel catches traction again, and the bike gets sent to its side yeeting you over the high side of the bike and into the ground hard. Comparatively, a “low side” is when you lose traction on the front or rear in a corner and the tire does not catch traction again, sending you to the ground towards the inside of the corner. You’re leaned over on the bike when this happens because of being in a corner so when you fall this way, you don’t usually hit the pavement hard like you would in a high side.

Love triples and my H-D Sportster 1200C just more entertaining than 4 Cyl bikes except maybe the MT10 the howl of the lost souls of the dead 💀

The power is tunable though so one could grow into it if mature enough to do that. Maturity, not me, I stuck Kerker headers and low restriction filters on my XS750 (a triple) right after MSF in California. Lighter bikes are way more forgiving and cheaper to fix. I'd recommend something like a CB500X, or some duel sport, to force versatility and see more of nature.

Famous motorcyclist last words: "I'm mature enough"..."I respect the bike"..."I just won't use all the throttle"..."better than buying a bike I will outgrow"... Could you start on an FZ09 or similar? Sure. Is it a good idea? Nope. Not forgiving of mistakes, especially in unexpected situations, which pop up all the time on the street. There's a million of these types of videos, but what most mention to fail is this: You WILL learn faster and build your riding skill faster on a less powerful bike. It doesn't have to be a 250, or a cruiser, just less powerful. You will also drop your first bike, likely more than once. If it's a very inexpensive used middleweight, it's not the end of the world. You may not even lose a penny of resale value when you're ready to step up to something more powerful. The few people who will make fun of you for being on a less powerful bike are the same ones who will ridicule your "chicken strips", and the same ones from which you'll get used parts when their bike is in the salvage yard or being parted out on Craigslist. Foolish riders have short lives, and that's just a fact.
