I like the format of this video - how to mix a classic cocktail with a little bit of history...in 5 minutes!

I absolutely love this drink with my whole heart. It's the first tiki cocktail I ever had, it awakened a passion that I've been chasing for a decade since then, and it's still probably my all time favorite drink.

Finding white grapefruit is the bane of my tiki existence
@deedeethedog057 ай бұрын
Honestly I just don't bother anymore. I know it's not the same drink with ruby red but it's what I have access to and I'd rather drink a zombie with ruby red grapefruit than not drink a zombie at all.

The struggle is real.

The drink is better with ruby red grapefruit, it’s already out of balance so the slight added sweetness helps more than hinders imo.

I’ve gotten lucky- some beverage stores (usually more upscale ones) will stock white grapefruit juice (100%, but from concentrate) in their mixer isle.

The 1934 zombie is my favorite cocktail and I served it at my Tiki Tuesday gathering last night to friends. However, I’ve adjusted the recipe to what I call the weekday zombie. What I do is back down on the 151 to three-quarter ounce and the other two rums to 1 ounce. Everything else stays the same and it is an amazing “weekday” version that everyone should try. Remember to always go back to the 1934 on the weekends!! I love the episode and appreciate you putting in the history clip as well.

Don's Zombie is one of the best and most potent, well balanced cocktail ever made. Whenever I have insomnia, a Zombie or two is guaranteed to put me into a coma for the best couple of days sleep ever. By the way Spike, love your plantation hat. Reminds me of those photos of Don sporting something similar. Very Rad my Man! Aloha

My favorite Tiki cocktail. I do back off on the Pernod, usually 4-5 drops not 6. This is Tiki in a glass. Great video Matt!

I finally got a bottle of Absinsthe. It adds a whole new dynamic to this cocktail. It makes my tongue just a little fuzzy. I finally now have all of the exact ingredients to make this drink sing! Love it.

@HootOwl5137 ай бұрын
It's not canon -- but I like to drizzle the 6 Gtts* of Absinthe on the sides of the glass, let them swirl down, then put the glasses in the freezer while I build the drink. *Gtts = Granitas = drops in Latin. [From apothecary notation.]

OMG this is incredible. I grew up in LA and my dad would constantly order zombies when we went out to dinner. But I'm certain none of the places we went to made them like this. I've tried to order zombies in various places around the world but bartenders either don't know what a zombie is or make something way off the mark. Seeing this, I now desperately want to make and try the real thing. I plan to have a small hotel in Asia, hopefully with a bar (maybe tiki-themed) and this drink would take center stage. Fantastic cocktail presentation and history lesson!
@rperry707 ай бұрын
Typically you see them in Asian restaurants, but they are a far cry from this recipe. Looking into Zombie recipes took me down the Tiki rabbit hole, and I discovered my favorite drink......the Zombie!

I make my own Falernum for my Zombies, I got the recipe on line, it's call Falernum #9 and with the ingredients you let it ferment in a mason jar for 24 hrs and strain through a cheese cloth into your demerara syrup and it also has high over proof white rum in it, yeah 2 of my Zombies and your done, I make the mistake of having 3 one night and I didn't remember anything till the next day.

Where can I get that Hat Spike ? Looks awesome on you! You look like the Don lol. BTW just came back from Palm Springs and went to Tiki Bootleger, I tried there Cobra Bits! 🐍 that knocks any Zombie out of this world! 😅

I made my own falernum for zombies but it is so strong it ends up overpowering any drink. I end up putting like 1/4 the called for amounts. Anyone else have this problem?
@aranbuzzas80007 ай бұрын
My homemade falernum is much stronger than the store bought stuff, for sure! But in a Zombie I don't mind.
@fairwind82227 ай бұрын
I will say it again because it’s spring time. The only reason he used so much mint is because it’s probably taking over the breezeway. I have it even growing through masonry 😠

Love Zombies, but got a SLIGHT problem with the character that was drawn next to the drink on the Beachcomber menu. Guess I wasn't the target audience back in the 1930's 😞 Oh well, good and effective cocktail nevertheless.

I think the Zombie recipe should be Dani Pola's recipe as the standard. The original zombie is 7/10 imo. I like to try every bar's zombie, but Kaona is the only one I can order 2 the same night every night. All other tiki bars, ill have it once and never order it again. What do you think Spike?

Nostalgia is nice. I get that a lot. But you can go to a tiki bar, or build your own tiki bar today, and drink zombies while talking about how cool those old days seem in the rear view mirror. But you can do so without redlining property laws, segregated restaurants, and rampant misogyny (among other issues) that were also a part of those past days. I enjoy emulating the look of past times, but I would not wish to live in the backwards time if given the option.
