Awesome demo, thank you! Especially for proving that the F1 has an actual analog limiter that prevents clipping, differently from the useless digital limiter in the H2n. The variable width is done with the mid/side technique, that is mono-compatible. You can also set the recorder in RAW mode and adjust the width in post-production.

Thank you for the demo of all the mic settings, this is really informative. For street/ambient recording, the SSH at 90 degrees sounds about right to me. It's immersive and natural, whereas the wider settings don't sound right. I have the Zoom H6 with the usual capsules, but not either of the shotgun capsules. The SSH at 90 degrees actually sounds better for street ambience than the XY capsules. Very interesting.

Great video was recommended this device was it sure but your review sold me!!! How does it do in very windy situations?
@JasonMcNamara5 жыл бұрын
Hey @JiDion. Sorry for the super slow reply. The Zoom F1 can do well in wind, but with which ever you use you've got to assist them. Placing the Pin Mic under your clothing will help a lot. If you're refering to the SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Mic, it's not the best in heavy wind. The only real way to deal with strong winds is to use a pro level Shotgun mic inside of a Zeppelin with what the call a Dead Cat on (the fluffy wind sock) together with something like a Zoom H6, F4 or something with Phantom Power built in. However that set up would also cost over $1000USD. That's the trade off. Hope that all helps. Cheers from Tokyo!

Now I've finally got some thoughts after watching your fascinating review. Thx a lot and maybe I'll go and get one soon. Say that the most advantage for me to take is the capsules, which I think they're the most creative module thing in the audio recording field.

My F1 came with the SGH6 not the one you used in this test. You should have done the test with the SGH6 since that is the one that comes with the F1. I think the one you used comes with the H6. The SGH6 is non adjustable, except for the round gain knob on top of the mic. You can’t adjust the angle.

Dear Jason, Thanks to you I got my Zoom F1. Question: What is the best setting to use the mic outdoor and reduce noises? Gracias, Nancy.
@JasonMcNamara2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy. Sorry for such a late reply. To reduce the noise outdoors... 1: Monitor the recording with a really GOOD pair of headphones. My recommendation is to use the same headphones you listen to your music with. That way you are comfortable with the sound. If you only have Airpods, then get some nice headphones like my Audio Technica ATH990BT and get yourself aquatinted with the sound of the headphones you use. 2: Buy (more money, sorry) and learn to use iZotope RX9 to clean up the audio in Post Production. Personally I have RX9 Advanced, but I also clean Audio professionally. Hope that helps.

Thanks, super informative! I'm considering buying this recorder. One thing I can't find a definitive answer yer whether it's possible to record 2 sources simultaneously: one of the capsules and lavalier mic in the line in.
@Putsim4 жыл бұрын
Nope. One or the other.
@JasonMcNamara4 жыл бұрын
It's not possible to record a Capsule Mic and the Pin Mic simultaneously. The ONLY way you could record two sources at the same time would be to purchase the EHX-6 capsule. It has 2 VLX/Jack composite inputs.
@Marcus_R3 жыл бұрын
Great review and comparison, big thanks! You said you own the bigger devices of the H series, what do you think: does the xy or the ms capsule significantly better when attached to the H5 or H6 vs. the F1?
@JasonMcNamara3 жыл бұрын
Yes sir and thank you. I have a really old H4n, an F4, a H6, an F6, 3x F1's and the LiveTrak L-8. I found the F4 is really noisy with the XY capsule. Plus the handling noise off the F4 is terrible. The H6 is a little noisy as well. It's nothing that can't be fixed by using the Voice De-Noise module/plugin on iZotope RX8. That's what I use to clean out all and any background noise. And so you know as a working Sound Recordist, I LOVE the F6. That 32-bit FLOAT recording is outstanding.

Thanks for the excellent demo, very useful and informative. In another review, it was recommended to wear the unit on a belt upside-down to both avoid the problem with the wire output placement, and also if you are the wearer, you see the display correctly when you tip it up toward yourself. I ordered one of these but haven't received it yet, so I don't speak from experience. OT: Your intro scared the shit out of me and felt like it almost ripped a hole in my eardrum, thanks for making up for it with a great video lol.
@JasonMcNamara5 жыл бұрын
HAHAHA!!! Yeah sorry about that. At least it got your attention. I've actually change it as of today where I've put in some cool music instead. Yes that tip will work with the cable, but the display will be upside down then too. Still it's not a big problem. Because you enjoyed this video on the F1, you may like to see three videos I just published simultaneously on the Rode Wireless GO which I've also used with the F1 and it's great. I will make a video focusing on using them together sometime. I have a really neat trick that most people may not have thought of. Thanks again for watching Vinny.Cheers from Tokyo!
@VinnyLePes5 жыл бұрын
If the display is upside down on the belt, and the wearer lifts the bottom up to look, then it’s the right way. Not sure that was intentional though. I may grab a right angle adapter if I can find one with screws, we shall see when I receive it tomorrow! I am interested in your tricks, and when budget allows, I certainly wouldn’t mind going wireless. I worry about interference ever since my camera picked up a beep I was unaware of and cause me me a lot of post-processing heartache to save an important interview. So now I’m looking to use the F1 for redundancy and also plan to get another with the shotgun to replace a Rode VMP that appears to be the RF amplifying culprit when paired with my X-T3. But it would be cool to record to the F1 and then pass the signal wirelessly back to camera or my H5. Anyway I’m getting into the weeds here, haha. My point is yes I am interested and will check out your other videos, and thank you for sharing!
@JasonMcNamara5 жыл бұрын
@@VinnyLePes same goes for me too. A LOT of what I have learnt over the many years of doing this has come from my own mistakes. They have taught me so much and have also sharpened my awareness of what could be potential problems before they've even happened. I'm actually planning on doing a video sometimes with a stack of audio gear that I own to teach others ways of either combining what they already own or to help them be aware of what they are buying to make sure they don't blow their money on something that won't suit their needs. What an excellent review and demonstration! You gave us so much useful information. I'm looking at this as a potential solution for recording a live music performances and for making field recordings. Would you recommend using the shotgun mic or the mid-side capsule for capturing a singer/songwriter 6-8 ft away from the camera? And what about closer up, such as with the unit set up directly in front of the performer?
@JasonMcNamara3 жыл бұрын
Firstly, thank you. I really appreciate all of these wonderful comments from you and everyone here. The shotgun mic is great is normal level situations, however its not good in really noisy environments. Even if you turn the gain down, it still can’t handle any excessive volumes coming into it. That that I would go the mid side or even possibly the XY mic and its personal taste as to which you prefer the most. For me its the Mid Side. And for close up, the shotgun is good so long (once again) as the signal its trying to record is say a voice and acoustic guitar. Its no good with Drums. Hope all that helps.

Interesting video and great work showcasing the different attachments. A question I have is which mic do you think will work best for something similar more binaural audio ?? Maybe test these attachments while walking through streets and having different sounds going past etc
@JasonMcNamara4 жыл бұрын
To really do binaural recordings you would need much higher end equipment than this. On a very rudimentary level through, the SSH-6 at 90º or the MSH-6 at 90º or even 120º would be best. The big thing you would need to be careful of is the handling noise of the F1. I've used it for recording Ambience many times, BUT you need to be super careful.

How come the stereo capsule sounds so much softer than the other two? Were the gains the same across the board? Is that because the stereo is meant more as a near field rather than far field mic?
@JasonMcNamara2 жыл бұрын
I shot this video 3 years ago now so I can't remember specifically, however there the levels are set on each mic so I may have had them set differently to each other. However yes, the difference in concentration vs separation between Mono & Stereo may have made a difference too. Well spotted.

With all of my gear on a shoot, I try my best to reserve a certain amount of my brain energy for being that extra bit more careful with my gear. Great comparison and review ... I am not in the zoom environment, so I don't think the F1 appeals to me much. If someone has another zoom recorder and uses the "plug-in" accessories, I think it would probably be a good decision to pick up an F1.
@JasonMcNamara4 жыл бұрын
I recently got a Zoom F6 and that thing is outstanding for recording. I'll try to get time to make a video on that. See how I go. And on the F1, if you need a stand alone Lav Mic recorder it's fantastic for that purpose. Think of the Capsule Mic possibility as an added bonus on top. You can always use the EXH-6 (capsule with 2x XLR inputs) on there for some majorly flexible possibilities.

PRO TIP: If it's super windy and you need to check the sound, make sure you're wearing headphones to check the sound AND also wear a hoodie or something over top of the headphones to block the wind from around your headphones. I've done that many times and it helps more than I have words to tell you.

had 2 zoom h1 but lost one, should i buy F1 to replace it
@JasonMcNamara4 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin. They are very different in their shape and dimensions. The H1 is a long thin unit and the F1 is about half the length, but chunkier in it's s body size. However on performance, I would say the F1 is WAY more versatile. You would do well do purchase the F1-LP version so you have the included Pin/Lav Mic which is always best for interviews and even vlogging. Then if you wanted something more ambient, select a capsule mic that suits your needs. If you want as close to the H1 then go for the XYH-6. Only thing to keep in mind is you can't record the capsule Mic and Pin Mic simultaneously, but you couldn't do anything like that on the H! either so nothing lost there. Hope all of that helps. The F1 is a fantastic unit for sure. Cheers from Tokyo!!

I love how this is almost like totally out of place like he's on a green screen and people are just walking by like he doesn't exist. Excellent review for a product I want but can't get it. I didn't even know that there was angle settings on the other Mic's. There's a few people who walk by and look over at the right moment like the guy on the cell phone as he's talking about cell phones interfering. Interested to see what other videos I will get by subscribing.

That's because I was shooting it on a really nice camera which with a killer auto focus and a nice depth of field. Plus it's not very often that many gear demos are shot purely outdoors where the gear is quite possibly going to be used. I'm happy to know you enjoyed the video. Thanks 👍😉

if I connect this to a DSLR through headphone out put, when I press record on the F1 it sends a beep to the camera to make synch in post easier right?
@JasonMcNamara5 жыл бұрын
I've never tried that and it's a good question, but yes, I would say that it would work. My trick that I use every time including on this video is to clap twice. I do it like this, "Audio marker 1" (clap)... "Audio marker 2" (clap). That works for me. Then I have a very obvious marker on all of my cameras as audio recorders that I can see on the WAV of all of my sources in the editor.

That was very comprehensive. The only thing you could have added would have been music.

Thanks Krane. I did think about it, but in the editing I found that it took away from the mission at hand which was to simply show off the recorders.

I have Zoom F1 Anybody can help me which capsule should i buy for Podcast and interview recordings
@JasonMcNamara2 жыл бұрын
I would say the Mono Shotgun capsule, however from experience it's important to make sure you listen to the levels before recording at the very least. However the best bet is to monitor the entire time with your headphones on so you know if the level needs to be brought down a bit or not.

hai, how how do you make it wireless ?
@JasonMcNamara4 жыл бұрын
It's not made to be wireless. Of course you could attach a wireless system such as the RØDE Wireless Go to it, but that would defeat the purpose.

来週...再来週... not quite sure about the second word. it means "next week" and "week after next"
@JasonMcNamara5 жыл бұрын
She said "Raishu kara..." meaning "from next week". It was "kara" that you missed @Massinissa. Anything before or after that was inaudible.
