That’s where electric doesn’t make sense. 134miles for £38. My car is £20 for 100miles. Only makes sense if you charge at home. If you can’t charge at home, no access, it’s not a fair replacement and therefore it’s not the future for everyone

Absolutely correct, it only really makes sense if you've got a home charger. I recently got a an EV and am lucky enough to have a drive (the only one in the street) & home charger and it costs about £5 to charge. If we didn't have a drive then it's not economically feasible.

23:37 'free road tax'.. not for long; electric cars may be exempt from VED bills at the moment, but you still have to apply to tax your car in the normal way each year on the government car tax website; you must also get an MOT in the same way as regular cars. In 2025, the electric car tax distinction will disappear altogether, and EV owners will have to pay VED at the same rate as petrol and diesel models within their pricing thresholds. This will apply to existing EVs as well as brand new ones - at current rates that would mean an annual bill of £165 after the first year.

Just a word of caution guys, only charge to 100% if you're doing a long journey. For normal running, charge to 80% to prolong battery life. It's also quicker to charge to 80% and do a further top up charge, than it is to charge to 100%. This is something you'll learn if you keep the EV for a period of time. Great video to dip your toes into the world of EVs. Incidentally we have an Audi Q8 e-tron away at the body shop for a ding in the rear nearside wheel arch, caused by a car door being blown into it.....the cost to repair the ding £800.

Great video , these are fabulous cars , I’ve seen a few EVs on copart some I wouldn’t risk but others which were very very cheap looked perfectly easily repairable, I saw a bmw i4 virtually brand new cheap with little damage , but the battery scares people off you’ll need either a friendly EV technican or learn and pass some of the courses yourself but it could mean easy repairs with good profit, 85p per kWh 😮 omg I pay 8p per kWh at home to charge mine

Thousands and thousands of drivers don’t have off street parking or a garage so would have to use public chargers whatever the cost.

@@keegan773 but many thousands do ! And they can charge their EVs at cheap rate , mine costs me about £1.50 per hundred miles !!!! Makes me feel very smug !

I'm about to retire from my current field of electronics after forty years... but even as I approach sixty, I am very tempted to re-train on hybrid and EV drive trains and electrical systems.

@@HowardLeVert a lot of EVs are cat’d because they’ve blown the pyro fuse which on some in inside the main battery compartment and there’s not enough people skilled enough to fix them

This one was good for you guys but you have had the Corsa and the small van (sorry can't recall what it is) which were not so good!!

Great video guys. Another victory over risk, down to your experience I think. One point, insurance prices have rocketed and wondering what the pay out was for this car. You already paid £3-4K under their end of auction ask and whatever the delta was between payout and auction sale surely gets passed back into renewal premiums. I know its complicated by high part prices (not this car but generally) and increased repair garage costs but the delta between insurance payout and auction sold price must be a large percentage of insurance "losses". Any thoughts on this from your perspective and industry knowledge.

Electric cars never going to match the thrill Rob got driving his Lamborghini! The sound of that engine just awesome!

Exactly, an EV will likely knock you down before you hear it. I can actually see them having to have engine like sounds fitted soon.

it looks super! do think the insurance companies write off cars to easily? but at least that gives you guys a "cheery" every now and again, as you said its hit and miss as the van was listed and repairable but was a bit to far gone, thanks for the content 👍

One of the issues with EVs is that the insurance companies want certification that the battery pack isn’t damaged. As they’re sealed it’s virtually impossible for any engineer to issue that certification. So they’ll get written off. The i3 is a particular type of bonded construction hence it’s quite difficult to repair.
@JonathanCox9411 ай бұрын
Great one guys, but it begs the question on why this car was written off for such small damage, it couldn’t have been a financial write off. More likely on parts availability and hire car costs.
@davebuchanan876311 ай бұрын
Imagine spending over an hour at a fuel pump and you had to wait for someone else to finish charging. EV’s are not fit for purpose as the charging network isn’t in place and the value of them drops like a stone. Very hard to part exchange and the range is poor. Okay for a second car if you can charge at home but why not just run a small petrol car?
