This was extremely illuminating. Unfortunately, if one were to go into shul wearing the Tallit the "wrong" way, that is, different than the rest of the congregation, the peer pressure builds until it is impossible to look "different".

Indeed. I wear my tallit with tzittzit to the front like Temani. I walked into an Ashkanazi shul and was told to put on my tallit the "correct way".

Thank you for a very clear and organized shiur. In your opinion, what is the proper way of actually putting on the tallith following the berakha (as opposed to how it is worn throughout the davening/day)? Is atifath yishme'elim necessary, and if so, how it is done?

A question for the Rav... Is it permissible to wear a tallit (with tzitzit) into the toilet (a place of tumah)? It is clearly not permitted to wear tefillin in such a place. What is the difference between the two?
@cyginsberg
@cyginsberg 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is definitely permissible. The tallit is no different than a "tallit qatan" that people normally wear under their shirt and wear into the bathroom. The tallit is merely a garment with 4 corners, when one wears a garment with t corners the Torah states that one must tie special fringes known as tzitzit onto it and then one may wear the garment. Basically, whereas tefillin is inherently a holy item with parshiyot inside, a tallit is merely a regular garment. Also, see Rambam hilchot tzitzit chapter 3 halachah 9 where he explicitly states that one may wear a tallit into a bathroom since it is a mitzvah which does not convey holiness onto the article of clothing.

@@cyginsberg ; a tallit katan that one wears under ones shirt, one is allowed to go into the bathroom. Concerning a tallit gadol worn exclusively for prayers one is NOT allowed to go into a bathroom while wearing it.

@@u.y.3643 See Mishneh Torah Hilchot Tzitzit Chapter 3 Halacha 9 where he states explicitly that it is permissible to wear a tallit in the bathroom. True, that the common custom is not to but that is a custom. The halacha is clear that one is allowed to.

@@cyginsberg ; don't think that's the Halacha how it's practiced today. Many laws of the Rambam are not normative Halacha nowadays. For that we have the Shulchan Aruch .I've never seen in any orthodox synagogue or yeshiva, someone going into a bathroom wearing a tallit gadol .
@cyginsberg

@@u.y.3643 I'm not denying that what you said is the common custom. My response was for the actual "halacha" and permissibility of bringing a tallit into the bathroom. You are correct that today most people refrain from doing so but it is important to know that this was not always the case and it is only a minhag.

You explain the sources beautifully, but your conclusion is incorrect. How one wears the tzitzit varies according to what part of the prayer service you are engaged in. And that is the precise language you quoted in the different sources.

Thank you, the cult the house of Yahweh says this is not the correct way, only goes to show the cults deception.
