Dennis, the reason you are seeing comments here attacking your premise question, "is there an afterlife?" is that this video doesn't answer that question, but rather is based on a conditional presupposition, that there is a god, and IF there is one, the afterlife follows. The commenters here are attacking your premise, and not your main point, which you have mentioned on radio. The reason they are doing that is because your video seems to be addressing the non-believer, but is actually addressing believers in god, not atheists or doubters.

Why do people see the idea of there being no afterlife to be bleak? Personally, I see it as comforting, don't think of it as "oh, I dont live on, thats bad" think of it as "once this life is over, I can finally be at peace, no anxieties, nothing to worry about, all the good and bad are left behind forever" people crave immortality but to be honest, the greatest pain is immortality, remembering every pain, anxiety, worry, for the rest of eternity. If that doesn't sound like hell, I'm not sure what does.
@Firebreath562 жыл бұрын
You are insane. There is no comfort in atheism. You won't be at "peace". You will be NOTHING. You have to have a soul to experience peace. What you will experience as an atheist is EMPTINESS. A dark abyss of nothing. You're talking about it like it's some nap. It's not. It's pure emptiness. The absence of anything. You clearly don't understand the afterlife. We believe that there will no longer be pain, or anxiety, or worries in heaven. We will experience eternal life the way God intended it, not the flawed one we have now. You don't understand the afterlife at all if you think it's just going to be filled with pain and anxiety and worry. Why do you think none of the good things in life would carry over to the afterlife? Why do you think it would only be all of the bad things? And why would you WANT to leave behind all of the good things!? You're looking forward to no longer experiencing love, or joy, or happiness, or comfort? You're looking forward to never seeing your family again? To losing everything that you are? All your emotions, thoughts, and feelings? No, there's no comfort in that. That's misery. If you don't see that as misery, you should reevaluate your life.
@timetraveler72 жыл бұрын
@@Firebreath56 I'm not saying there'd be nothing good in the afterlife, what I'm saying is after 1,000,000 years there you'd be exhausted of existing, every experience, good and bad, would become progressively insignificant and meaningless. Everytime you talk to a family member it becomes more and more mundane until you just couldn't take it anymore, but you can't escape, because you're in "paradise" that's why I said that no existence is perfectly ok, not having an afterlife isn't a bad thing, it's a neutral thing, I don't need to think about anything, good or bad. I'd imagine it to be like when you fall asleep but don't dream, just nothing forever, and that thought is relaxing to think about, there is no reason to fear death if that's the case, because dead people wouldn't worry about it, why should you?

I don't think any proven facts were meant to be presented in this video. It starts with a question that literally cannot be proven with physical evidence, as it is a question about the metaphysical. The video then comes to the conclusion that if God exists then, yes, there is an afterlife. That's about as close as anyone can get to answering something like this. It doesn't matter if your atheist, agnostic, or theist. To those mocking Dennis saying, "Facts don't care about your feelings," Well anyone can say the same to you. Have you proven the non existence of an afterlife? I highly doubt it. Therefore, whatever the fact may be, it doesn't care about your feelings on the matter. Here's the thing: we cannot use physical tools to read metaphysical measurements, so good luck discovering the facts, whatever they may be, using the things available to us at the moment. A question with an answer which cannot be proven was asked. So one's best answer is what they believe. That's as good as it gets for anybody on this subject. The only way to find the fact is to wait it out. What the hell kind of answer did you expect? Its always funny how after watching a video like this you can literally count on dozens of atheists defending they're egos as if anyone was looking at them to defend the "honor" of they're beliefs in the first place. If your beliefs are so vastly evident why do you feel the need to so adamantly publicly defend them...even when no one was turning around and saying, "Now what do ya have to say about that, atheists!"? So glad the "intellectually superior" have graced this channel with their pleasant comments. I believe half of 'em just think atheism makes them look cool or independent or something. Lol. @timetraveler72 жыл бұрын
It's not really about proving the absence of an afterlife, it's more so the arguments presented in the video were clearly subjective. Second, an afterlife must be proven in order to disprove it, I personally have reasons why I think the Christian ideas surrounding the afterlife aren't desirable but I'd never use my personal beliefs about an afterlife to disprove it, only to show why it wouldn't be as pleasant as it may seem. You can see the nihilistic realist in him, but he just can't accept it. His logic is "If there is no God, there is no objective morality" and similar statements are made in this video. He understands nihilism, that nothing matters in this world, and if there is no ultimate justice, then it IS survival of the fittest and life isn't fair... he chooses to have faith because he finds nihilism unacceptable. In a way I think this is the most honest and justified reason for believing in God. You treasure life more than I do, you see it as sacred, that's why I can go without the religion. Seriously? Are you saying that without evil, pain, and suffering happening, life isn't worth living? A world without evil, pain, and death in no way precludes "challenges to conquer". Have you ever played a game? a puzzle? gained a skill? etc. If you don't want an afterlife then you likely don't enjoy living. If you removed all the reasons you don't enjoy living and still don't want an afterlife... I'm just not sure you've thought it through.
@kylefoss66247 жыл бұрын
Caleb Stroman I’ve thought about life and death for many years. I believe the fact that I hope there’s not an afterlife makes me appreciate every second I have on this earth far more than I used to. Really think about it though. Define a world where evil does not exist. What is good in that case. They way I like to think about is the love I have for the people in my life. The fact that I know there’s a chance of bad things happening to them, the idea that if they die I will never get to see them again surely brings me great sadness, but overall makes me so grateful that I have them with me for now. I can lose them, and so my love is stronger right now. Does that make sense?
@moonbeam33627 жыл бұрын
No. It doesn’t.
@CalebStroman7 жыл бұрын
Kyle, I know the point your making is purely emotional and not an argument but going on your thought experiment, if we define a world without evil we call that "heaven" and essentially, in that case, everything is good! Just because something I have now could be forever removed does not make me appreciate it more (in fact I may hold back and not give my full love because I wouldn't want to be hurt). Personally, I can appreciate what I have just as much, if not, even more, knowing I can't lose it. Who are you "grateful" to for your family? Perhaps the possibility of losing loved ones helps you love them more but living in a world where I can't lose my loved ones, where I have no fear of them causing me pain, and we can just enjoy everything and one another, forever, to me that is paradise. Biblically speaking, the only people who get into heaven are the people that want to be there.
@kylefoss66247 жыл бұрын
Caleb Stroman I’ll ask you to ponder this then: what happens in this eternity? What do you do? What are the activities that take up your time? Are you capable to whatever you wish and live out every desire? Can you take on any adventure you wish for? Probably. But then what in this eternity. Once you’ve done everything you desire, I imagine you would miss the conflict. You would crave the unpredictable and hope for something new and unexpected. In a sense where is the “life” in this afterlife?

People view the idea of immortality as perverse and wrong, and we see that constantly in media. The bad guy did all the bad things he did so that he could live for eternity. But we shouldn't view an endless life that way. Immortality should be strived for. It's easy to make the assumption that God is real and that when we die, we live on in an afterlife, but it's more logical to look at the world and say hey just in case that's not right, let's do everything in our power to prevent death altogether. There should be a cultural shift towards believing in the search for immortality, and videos like these do the opposite.

Not only that, but he seems to merely ignore tons of possibilities. Just a few examples: 1) There is no God, but we have an afterlife like the Buddhists believe (i.e. reincarnation) where we are reborn depending on how we acted in this life (if we acted like shit, we get reborn as an insect, if we acted good, we get to be human, or maybe something better). 2) There is no God and no afterlife. So the universe is unjust, which means that humans are the only beings capable of rendering justice. 3) There is a God and an afterlife, but it's not the Christian God. After all, it is unjust to punish someone eternally for a finite crime (such as not being a Christian for example). 4) There is a God and it's the Christian God, but this God is evil. Therefore, it's a good idea to rebel against this God even if it means harm to yourself (this would seem to lead to Satanism).

Red Blaze In one word ....Satan . The experience I have seen over the years is this : Satan already owns the atheist . But he doesn’t own the Christian . But he can do a lot to make us ineffective , and as far as moral is concerned that depends on the context . One example : Christians do not believe in abortion , where as the majority of atheist do not see any problem with it . So morality takes on a vast array of issues of which I would hazard to guess where the majority of atheists stand . Also when the word “ religious “ is used that is a wide spectrum of beliefs .
@redblaze87005 жыл бұрын
Ronaldreganfan There you go: using Satan to describe a demographic you dislike. We atheist don’t believe in gods, but we also don’t believe in anything other that is supernatural, including daemons, devils and angels. Also: yes, most atheists supports abortion, but so do a lot of Christians. Did you know that 70 % of all abortions are done by Christians? And Christians are more likely than atheists to have an abortion, and Christians are also more likely to divorce, become pregnant as teens, and hit their spouses/children. And religious are more likely to condone murder, torture and assault, especially if it is against demographics they are thought to hate. So I have good reasons to say that atheists are more moral.

So there's two main arguments here: 1. If there is no afterlife, earthly sins would go unpunished, and that isn't just. It feels so great to throw "facts don't care about your feelings" back in your face. However comforting it may feel to believe in an afterlife, it isn't proof of it's existence, just a pointless appeal to emotion in a subject that requires empirical evidence. 2. If there is a god, there is an afterlife. This is even more pointless, as it requires the leap of already believing in a god to be valid, and most people who believe in a god already have an explicitly stated afterlife for their religion. This point, and the absurd amount of time spent on it, betrays the real purpose of the video: to validate your christian-conservative target audience with arguments that are reassuring to those who already agree with you, while not putting forth the effort to give anything to convince those who don't.

Many of the premises are assumed to be true with no defense of their truth and even if they were true, the conclusions derived aren't always valid (if the premises are true, then the conclusion must be true).
@moonbeam33627 жыл бұрын
Sylvertaco And yet it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. I suppose God speaks in many different ways to those who listen.
@Sylvertaco7 жыл бұрын
MoonbeamsMuses - I am talking specifically about the argument format (ie the transcript for the assertions made). If you are going to say the argument for belief only makes sense if you believe, then a) the argument is not needed in the first place and b) that is an undefendable assertion.
@moonbeam33627 жыл бұрын
Sylvertaco No, no, I’m not saying that. I’m just saying that it seems like God speaks to different people in different ways.
@Sylvertaco7 жыл бұрын
MoonbeamsMuses - That very well may be, but Dennis Prager isn't God. So when he gives an argument it should at least make sense.
@Sylvertaco7 жыл бұрын
J Camp - I have seen most of his videos on the other subjects of religion, and most of them have similar issues of assumed premises and invalid arguments. However, even if the proofs were true, that is the issue with an argument being invalid, the premises can be true but the conclusion isn't necessarily true. That's why I mentioned the validity in my post.

The idea that this life may be the only one we get, that there may be no god or afterlife, doesn’t drive me insane. Rather, it further encourages me to live my life all the more fully and without regrets, to treat others more kindly lest I never see them again, and to savor the things that I feel make my life meaningful and beautiful. And if all there is after this life is just non-existent blackness, there won’t even be a “me” to comprehend the nothingness so I might as well just be eternally asleep. Doesn’t sound too bad to me.
@morfanaion6 жыл бұрын
Dennis, this whole video does just one simple thing: it tells us why you believe in your particular God. Nothing more, nothing less. You believe in God, because it's comforting to believe that you will meet your loved ones in the afterlife and that those who do wicked things will get what's coming to them. But this appeal to emotion does not bring any truth. It brings comfort to those that can't handle the fact that we are born, we live and we die. I understand that we would like to be important, that it'd be nice if we had a purpose, but there is no evidence to suggest any such purpose. But it also means that you can give purpose to your own life. The purpose I'm giving myself is to help my fellow human beings, to bring joy to others. Knowing that I've brought joy to the lives of others gives me enough peace of mind when I kick the bucket.

Some of the things said were beautiful and powerful. But they still come up short for those of us who don't have faith in the existence of God. And that's not beautiful. I think that's the strongest desire I have, to believe there is a God who is omnipotent and actually cares about us. Because i can't explain many things in my life that i have experienced or seen or even learned about if that kind of being exists.

Now a days I fail to see the negative side of thinking this, like I used to a couple of years ago, I stayed and "edgy" atheist for 2 years, then I found Jordan B Petereson lectures, some Stefan then some Prager and it all changed. Seeing all the chaos and nihilism on our culture can ONLY be blamed on the hate towards God. It becomes easier to accept there is something beautiful, infinite and truly meaningful when you learn to appritiate the art, the REAL art, how a beautiful painting, a cathedral, sculptures can capture your imagination without you even knowing, or caring, you just stare, there is little explanation to art if you accept we are mere pointless mortals in a random quest to extinction. The only cultures without art are the ones with all the depravity and evil, art can change a life, but why? how is that any relevant to evolution? having good taste? seems even more stupid when you think it that way, art is useless when you have no soul.

David, what an awesome testimony! It seems you are at least in full seeker mode. That is an exciting time. I agree that art, music, and other things like that have no place in a random evolutionary society bent on survival and procreation. Neither does Love. The Bible verse God is Love (said in several places in 1 John) started my search for truth. I would love to hear from you, to see where your journey takes you.
@AlejandroPerez-mg3fc5 жыл бұрын
Missconception number 1: Evolution is not an "intelligent" mechanism, it is random. Our ability of apreciating art is a consequence of the development of our brain. Just like our colon, it is not necessary for survival, but it is there. To further explain, our sense of aesthetic is predictable to a certain degree. We appreciate harmony, simmetry and consistency (the same physical traits that we search for in a fit partner for reproduction) Missconception number 2: Chaos and nihilism don't come from the "hate" towards a god. Atheist don't hate god, they believe there is no god to hate. What you call chaos and nihilism is nature. Observe nature, animals and how they interact. All chaotic and cruel, but beautiful at the same time. Missconception number 3: What the fck? Show me just ONE culture without art, there isn't one. Lastly, just because you don't like how life is, and it is easier to accept that there is a god that will magically solve everything, it isn't true. It is a coping mechanism. You aren't mature enough to accept death so your brain has wired a coping mechanism to avoid falling into depression. I hope this reveals to you some of your own rationalizations.

I usually agree with you on many topics, but I'm afraid, on this issue, I do not. It is clearly not an unbiased stance. You are clearly arguing for your religious beliefs, beliefs I myself do not hold. That being said, you are welcome to believe it. If you'd go insane without it, as you said, I would no longer get to your other arguments that I find enjoyable. So, Mr. Prager, while I respectfully disagree with you, I will not hold it against you, just as I would hope you wouldn't hold my beliefs against me. Just remember, not believing in an afterlife doesn't make life meaningless. It makes it so much fun! It allows you to define your own purpose, or at least that's my philosophy. But you're welcome to have yours. That's free expression, and that's just the way I like it!

I wonder how many atheists believe in the supernatural? My wife and I both witnessed the same supernatural event, which was a single long, loud note being played on a recorder. We both sat bolt-upright in the bed, startled. I jumped up and turned on the light. The recorder was laying beside our bed. It wasn't there when we went to bed. We had no rational explanation for what happened. So, if there is a supernatural world (and I now believe there is), then that certainly opens up the possibility of a soul, a creator-god, and an afterlife.

Spirit: Oh, geez, that is terrible that you felt that way. I'm not being sarcastic at all. Sorry if I came across that way. It is KZbin, after all, the home of cynicism. :0) I am actually excited to read about unusual stories and miraculous testimonies. I have many. The two biggest and most obvious involves two family members falling from great heights--two and three stories up, respectively, getting no injuries in one and a major tailbone bruise and minor scratches with the other. These were within twenty or so years of each other. Different apartments, different landscaping, different ages of people. What, do you suppose, would be the odds of survival for one person, then two, then two from the same family? That is the way the prophecies in the Bible about Jesus are, too. That is partially what I meant by "research". The odds that Jesus would fulfill even one of the prophecies are next to none, but He went and did 'em all. Pretty amazing.
