I was an EMT for 6 years and I carried a kubaton for like 2 weeks and then a switched to a "tactical flashlight". I eventually started carrying a sidearm as it became legal in TX and had gotten into MMA early on because I felt that utilizing a firearm in my line of work had to be an absolute last line of defense or response to another gun or knife being used on me. Never had to use my gun ever but used my BJJ and MMA many times to control violent patients or parry punches thrown at me. MMA also made me totally okay with getting punched so at least one time a guy punched me and I didn't even bother to show a reaction and that was enough to defuse the situation bc he was so thrown off by my lack of reaction. It was a wet noodle punch anyways so I didn't feel the need to respond.

For paramedics and firefighters (or anyone who wants to be on the safer legal side EDC tool), there are rescue knives with glass breaker tip and belt cutter. The blade usually has a rounded tip to not accidentally stab someone you want to cut out of any sort of entanglement, Usually, they have a very profiled grip as well.

While obsolete, crossbow or bow would be better ranged defense weapon than nothing. On top of that no gun licensing. But you're going to need some practice loading arrow/bolts quickly. And if you're worried about legal repercussions a blunt tip with alot of poundage might be enough to crack a rib.

In terms of similar small weapons in the Japanese tradition you are right about the usefulness being better in clinch or standing grappling than as a pure striking tool. Items similar to kubaton, such as jutte, were used at the end of the Edo Period mainly as tool for grappling rather than simply hitting someone.

At what point does the kubaton turn from a self defense tool to a vampire hunting weapon? On a serious note, there is a reason why in history we made handles for swords and daggers bit chunkier and tailored to the hand for comfort and utility. If any weapon had that in mind, its most likely plausible

A roll of quarters is too much, so much extra mass it makes you much slower. A roll of dimes can turn a solid hit into devastating. You still have to know how to punch and fight etc. for it to make a difference. This thing, if it's comfortable on impact, could be close to the right mass for that tactic.

So I started looking around for something like this. I'm a pretty big guy, and my first line of defense is I look pretty intimidating. However, I'm getting old, last year had both of my knees replaced, which means I can't even kneel or crawl anymore, and if I go down, I'm not just jumping back up. In fact, if I drop something and it rolls under the couch, 9 times out of ten I'm yelling for my teenage son to come get it for me, because getting up and down from the floor is a whole other challenge now. Not to mention, as far as self preservation goes, once you've had double knee replacements, running away is pretty much out of the question. With that said, aside from carrying a firearm everywhere I go, which I'd prefer not to do, if this thing had a super bright flashlight at the other end of it, I'd be sold, and already be purchasing one for my wife, my self and our son.

I think kubatons are not as useless, as you think. I think you won't use a kubaton itself in a self defense situation, but if you learn, how to use it, you can use a pen, a stick or anything, that's shape is similar to the kubaton. But wearing a kubaton on your keychain is quite useless. The targets can be the opponents face, neck, and yes, pressure points, the problem with them is, that they are easy to miss, but when you hut them succesfully, the are painful. Really painful, but just painful. And that is my opinion on kubatons, if you are good at them and lucky, you can make pain to your opponent, but you won't make serious injuries.
