I love your channel Mike. As a former NYC cop in the South Bronx, although it seems the XL being heavier, hits harder, I would still go with the original. I am always concerned with weapon retention. What I like about the original is that it is thick enough to hurt when it hits, but thin enough to make it difficult for someone to grab it and pull it out of your hand. The XL may hit harder, but I tested it against the sort of bruiser you would want to use something like this against as an equalizer. He said it hit harder, but once he got is hand on it. He was able to hold onto the whip. With the original, I was able to pull hard and get it out of his grasp.

*The key is in the motion. It's all about the way the whip flicks with rotation. Lead with the handle let the whip lag behind then you extend your elbow and want the end of the whip to make contact at extension. Imagine you're holding a hammer and you're swinging towards the nail but with a tad more wrist before contact. Its insanely effective when used the right way. This reminds me of the sjambok, the South African whip. I ordered one from my firearms supplier when I had my FFL. The one I bought is made of plastic, though I think the authentic ones were made of some sort of leather. The plastic are still, however, very effective. I hit myself hard a few times, and the pain was excruciating. One day, I showed it to my father, who was a police officer at the time. I hit him with it, but not as hard as I hit myself, and he felt a lot of pain. I asked him what he thought about tne police having these, and he said hitting someone full force with it is immoral and would cause them psychological problems. It stings like you can't believe.
@DevilShepherd
@DevilShepherd 2 жыл бұрын
Guys, the smaller one is obviously more effective. The smaller the point of contact, the more it hurts. And because it's lighter, it's more flexible, it hurts way more! Also if a guy rushes and tackle you in a clinch or a takedown... the big one is completely useless whilst the small one is still very effective with just the flip of a wrist.

"Hits like a stick", thought you didn't rate sticks? 😜 This is basically a trade off. The thinner ones have less surface area at point of contact which means the pain is more focused. I have owned both. I had the original one but left it in an old girlfriend’s car and now she has it. The XL is so much more painful and effective. I have hit myself in the leg at almost 30% and it left a bruise for a couple days. I have hit light poles, and concrete barriers at 100% and it does start to tear up the plastic sheathing after a couple good hits on a rough surface like concrete. But the sound it makes is terrifying. I’ve also hit my skull at around 15% and the pain goes right through your bone and it really rattles your brain. I think a 100% downward shot right on top of someone’s skull could crack their skull and certainly concuss them. If you hit someone across the cheekbone or across the orbital bone, it will 100% break that bone. Especially if you do a full power shot. That follow-through advice is no joke. In fact, don’t even treat it like a baton or whip. Instead, treat it like a blade and use blade fundamentals. You can even kind of sort of jab with it, if you keep an extended arm in front of you and just kind of rotate your wrist around in a circle. You can kind of send the whip out in front of you and then bring it back and re-chamber. Because of its length, if you keep that fully extended arm, you don’t have to worry about it coming back and hitting you in the face. I keep it in my car, and if I don’t feel a gun is necessary in a situation, I am 100% going for this. It will only take one shot for somebody to know what it is capable of and they will back off. It’s also a legit car rescue tool. The seatbelt cutter is in a good spot. The glass breaker is in a good spot and once you’ve broken the glass using the whip to clear the glass actually works.

An even better combo than buckler plus stinger would be flashlight plus stinger. The flashlight also allows a free shot but is way easier to use and way easier to carry around. Maybe you could make a video about the best combos. That would be really interesting. Especially, because anyone who seriously wants to defend himself will want to have every little advantage he can get. I would also be interested for your best (combo) suggestions against guns as those are not allowed in a lot of places but the attacker might still have them.

I asked him about weapons and he said all you need is this and he pulled out a handkerchief with half a dozen 20c coins tied in the corner and proceeded to whip it at metal targets. He said its not a weapon cause its just his lose change kept in his pocket. The biggest problem with the whip in my opinion is... it's just socially awkward. I think about concealed carrying that thing in the belt loops at Wal Mart and... it really feels like a pain in the rear to thread through the belt loops and carry around. And then, if you actually do use it... what's a prosecutor, judge and jury going to think about using this weird novel weapon? I don't know. You already mentioned the PR optics of the whip aren't great. Cops whipping a black suspect for example. The main drawback of this weapon seems to be getting people to actually use it. An effective weapon no one wants to use is worse than a stupid ku-baton that people actually will use.

That thing reminds me of the ONE time I had to cut my own switch..if you are southern or live near the woods..you KNOW what that is..and my dad wouldn't let me get a smaller one..had to be as thick as my thumb and after you've had that done ONCE you never want to have to do it again.

I just bought the Stinger. Could you make a tutorial on how best to apply it/tactical strikes, for self defense? Thanx

Love your videos and how you are the Guinea Pig for these things, lol. That's dedication and I like how completely fair you are and how your mind works. You certainly give things a thorough going over. And how you make sure to be clear about context too. Like what kind of situations warrant these things and what the alternatives are.

Go to a hardware store (like home depot or something like that) and buy a length of that cable they should sell that, if not get a motorbike brake line, they are more less the same then the handle is up to you.

tough choice.. thinner = more speed, more sting, or larger = more thump.

Personally I like my 7 shot 357 Magnum w a speed loader or my 9mm. If someone is on pcp or methed or just going berserk w a high pain tolerance the stinger may not be effective. My Magnum or knife is always gonna be effective. May have to give em a few but it will work. I'm 6,4 235 to 245 depending. I'm also fairly stout and had some training throughout my life stsrting at childhood...I've been in and seen more than my fair share. Ive really worked people over w my hands, feet, and baton that would just not go down because of chemicals..I would like to test out the stinger but know it could never replace my gun or knife. Always looking for a good less than lethal

I found some half centimeter thick hoze for propane and stuf like that and hit my self with it, that thing hurts dude, it is maybe three times the size of the big whip, with little power as posible but it felt like i took a big piece of iron on my forearm that sh*t hurs. You should try it LOL

Imagine the stinger whip with a weighted lead ball on the end about the size of a ping pong ball, or something like a lead fishing weight. Then add it to a handle which is basically a knuckleduster with the glassbreaker point built in. Alternatively, split the stinger whip about six inches from the end into six individual strands ending in a ball bearing, like a 'cat O' nine tails kind of thing.
