You should definitely watch Batman: The Movie from 1966, starring Adam West. You might even want to watch the TV series from that time. You do not need to watch the Batman serial from 1943 starring Lewis Wilson, or the Batman and Robin serial from 1949 starring Robert Lowery.

The real reason Batman dresses and acts like a genuine Bat is that his bloodline from his mother is the Arkham family and madness quite interestingly runs through the genuine bloodline and one part of that insanity is being haunted by such images of giant bats and Batman, due to being an Arkham is just in a constant state of panic and the worrying feeling that he is actually insane.
@madebymali67583 ай бұрын
Also one thing I love about this batman movie is that he didn’t win. He didn’t figure out the villain’s plan. He didn’t stop it. He didn’t save everyone at the last minute. In the end, he simply lost to the villain. I feel like that was so important for his character arc since this is early in his career as batman. Also a nice subversion of expectations for us as viewers.
@jermainehaslam56343 ай бұрын
This Batman was so focused on revenge that it stopped him from focusing properly on his detective work and the worst part about it all was he created the villain accidentally. His actions had inspired the Riddler and his followers and they took Batman's influence and turned it into their own way of revenge which was killing people wheres as Batman is all about putting his enemies in Arkham Asylum not killing.

@locodude12 I would argue that just because he has support in something doesn’t make him not skilled or intelligent. He was able to solve the vast majority of the riddles, and the ones he didn’t had some other elements in play. As far as I’m aware, good detectives don’t do everything themselves. Alfred primarily does some decoding on 2 riddles that he can do due to his past experience (and on the first, they actually decoded together), and him not knowing a carpet tool is fair for the character, imo.

To answer a couple of your questions: 1) The Batman was a big success. It grossed $772 million against a budget of ~$185 million, making it the seventh highest grossing film of 2022. It got positive reviews from critics and fans. So, yeah, there'll definitely be more of these. 2) Personally, I don't think it was too soon for a new series of Batman movies. The Christopher Nolan ones were great, but they were done. And the last film in that series came out in 2012. So it was 10 years in between that old series and this one. Also, Batman is one of those characters that gets rebooted a lot, so I don't mind seeing different filmmakers and casts take on the IP. I love to see how different filmmakers interpret the material and I think Batman's one of the few characters where you could get away with rebooting his story more often (as long as you don't spend any time on rehashing his origin story, because we've all seen it a million times by this point).

This is peak Batman from the comics. The detective side. Yes, people know him as the Dark Knight, but he debuted in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, and his other nickname is The World's Greatest Detective. And that's what this is. A detective story. His pain was too fresh and he was acting out on it in the way he wanted, but now he realizes that isn't what the city needed. He's got to be Bruce, use that power, and make Batman a symbol of justice. I could very easily see the 2nd movie having him put on the Bruce persona that people know and being more or a larger than life figure and more theatrical as the batman. This movie was an inexperienced batman who wasn't using all the tools at his disposal.

Comments are pretty good. Some notes. Even in the old media, Ras Al Ghul always addresses Batman as “Detective.” As it has been said that’s the point of Batman not that he breaks your bones but that he’s the World’s Greatest Detective. & Batman doesn’t smile: that’s also a Batman thing… & as said they referenced it several times, Batman has only been around for two years. No Catholics in the comments? The “beautiful magic” is Ave Maria, Latin for Hail Mary. It is the Hail Mary. Also, that IS Nirvana, one of their biggest hits: Something In The Way. When Selena says she’s going upstate to Bludhaven that’s the second city in Batman world, where Dick Grayson, Robin #1 sets up shop as an adult superhero, Nightwing. Also as said look for the Joker deleted scene. & like the Joker, yes…psychotic. Phoenix’s Joker by the way isn’t necessarily Batman’s The Joker. One thing Christopher Nolan didn’t do was really delve into Batman from the comics. This movie catches the feel of the best Batman from comics & graphic novels.

Fun facts about this movie * This is Day Two Batman, so it means he is still learning how to be a vigilante and also, the bat symbol or batarang on his chest is made of the same gun of the killer of his parents. * The Penguin is played by Colin Farrell * There are some far away shots that you can see the Riddler * The green stuff he put himself in is adrenaline, but it looks like venom - a chemical that Bane takes to grow in size and make him stronger and invulnerable. * This movie talks about more of the detective side of batman than the fighter side and the billionaire playboy side of Bruce. * In the jail cell scene, the Riddler is talking to the Joker. * The Joker is played by Barry Keoghan, who also played a character in Marvel Eternals as Druig, the mind control eternal * The director Matt Reeves wanted the Joker to have a disability better than falling from the chemical that made him like in the comics or, like in the Dark Knight movie, he cut his own mouth to have a smile because he wanted to be more realistic than fictional. His Joker's disability made him creepier because he lost some of his green hair, his skin is nastier, and his mouth is disturbing. * There is a deleted scene you can watch in the bonus features or KZbin about the Batman is interrogating the Joker and Barry Keoghan's Jokers laugh is phenomenal

They def gave this Batman a horror movie vibe. You can see it in the filmmaking for sure. Like when we first see Batman in action, you just hear his footsteps approaching slowly and then he steps out of the shadows to just destroy those gang members. Later in the movie, when the flooding is happening and he's fighting the gunman up in the rigging, there's that shot where he comes leaping out of the smoke and you'll notice that they play a metallic, "string stab" type of sound effect like you'd typically play over the psycho killer leaping out at people in a slasher movie. And, ofc, there's the Batmobile revving to life when he's about to chase the Penguin and the shot looks like the sort of shot you'd use when a killer/bad guy is about to chase down the good guy in a normal movie. Not to mention the iconic shot of the Batmobile emerging from the flames of the explosion like some sort of demonic monster. They took all the filmmaking tricks you'd normally use to make the monster scary in a horror movie and used them to make Batman feel scary.
@davidhasselblad38253 ай бұрын
My favorite Batman is detective Batman. He worked a lot closer to others and the comics really showed how he deduced things. In Batman’s later career he just figures things out off the bat. No pun intended. “The smell of the blood and coagulation shows this is the victim. Or what left of him. The blood is anemic and the aliens from eight years ago must be behind it.” And don’t explain often how he knows all of this. Also. Detective Batman was in his early years. Before he became this super power in the justice league. He was more brooding. He was still trying to figure out how to balance Bruce Wayne and Batman. And was pretty emo like as you guys said. He was a lot more violent and hardcore. Then he becomes the sleuth who never even gets shot because he’s on the ceilings he’s jumping off of walls and going buck wild without a sound. Also riddler wears a suit and is very intelligent and witty. He likes creating puzzles for Batman because he wants to prove he’s smarter in the comics. In some he has specific reasons for going after the Batman. I hated jim Carey’s riddler. This riddler is closer. But his look is way darker. And his vibe. However his intelligence is on par. Jim’s had two things right. The red hair and the question mark cane. In the beginning the riddler really liked and respected Batman. But when Batman wasn’t willing to go to the lengths he would to create a superior society he saw him as a rival constantly trying to outsmart him.

I dont believe this movie is as good as The Dark Knight, no superhero movie is to my mind. However I do think this movie captures certain elements of Batman’s character that The Dark Knight doesn’t and it’s one of my favorite elements to the character. It’s his relation to fear but more importantly; the fear he inflicts onto the criminals of Gotham. The Batman is not right in the head and those criminals know it. Which is why they fear him so much. They KNOW that if he catches them they’re in big trouble as he’s actually crazy. A person with a real psychological issue, forged by that ally his parents died in. ‘’I am the shadows’’ bc even if he’s just one person he *can* be anywhere and that’s why he’s everywhere. He uses this fear he instills as a tool - and the light is a warning. The movie also portrays a young Bruce Wayne, early in his vigilante career. He’s a recluse, consumed by who he really is - Batman. He has to learn to put on the mask of Bruce Wayne, as he can do more good than Batman ever could.

Bare in mind that this is an early era Batman, before he is at the top of his game, he is still learning and finding his feet at this stage, still holding onto the grief and has that naive side that comes from his lack of experience he will grow into a more polished character and become the Bruce Wayne/Batman we are used to seeing where Bruce is the playing the game and running Wayne Enterprises and being the playboy character. I think the plan is to create a franchise around the Batman character that will last a couple of decades maybe so they went for a younger Batman and will start introducing other characters that will have their own spin off movies or tv shows like the Penguin and other characters will be introduced and it will build the world with Batman being the thread of continuity because the issue with the DC stuff is that it has had standalone movies/trilogies and tv shows and none of it has any continuity and there has been constant reboots of the same characters over and over again and for those who aren’t like the uber nerds, those who are labelled normies, it’s really confusing, especially when they are comparing it to the Marvel Universe, so I am hoping that they do something and build off of it and we don’t get another Batman reboot in 5 years time which is connected to the new era DC Universe which is meant to be a reboot of all the DC stuff but with somethings that are outside that Universe in kind of elseworld Universes, it just gets too complicated for the normies to follow and they end up losing interest. How they were doing it with the Snyderverse had promise but it was cursed and they tried to catch up with Marvel too quickly and they should have pumped the brakes and introduced the characters more before Justice League and then there was the whole Justice League fiasco which really did kill the franchise and even though the Snyder cut was considerably better the damage was already done, the cult following wasn’t enough at the end of the day. There is so much they could have done with the DC stuff over the past couple decades but it’s lacked any real leadership and direction and continuity and if I am being honest, I think it’s too late now, I think a lot of people have had enough of it and are probably thinking, not another Superman reboot, not another Batman reboot, not another suicide squad reboot etc etc It’s no wonder people are tuning out. I just can’t see this reboot being a success, the good will is gone

This is Year 1- Year 2 Batman, he is meant to be exactly how you saw, he hasn't figured everything out just yet, he hasn't found the balance between Bruce and the Bat, he's a good detective but not yet the best, even his fighting style is still a little rough but this is the most accurate Batman we've gotten in decades, he might actually be the only one, if we are discounting the versions within the various animated media.

This came across as a more real world, authentic Batman. When Batman 1st appeared in Detective Comics (DC) back in1939 He had brilliant investigative & crime solving skills that this movie portrayed well in this film noir version. Yes This 2nd year Batman is locked in a dark, vengeful mind state. Why else would a Billionaire rather dress up as a bat and actively go into harms way, patrolling the city at night. Searching out the crazy criminal elements and dealing out his own brand of vigilante justice. His parents murders scarred him for life. In his mind, the less time he spent as Bruce Wayne rhe victim & more time as Batman the mask of strength the better. It would have been so easy to become a Billionaire playboy were his scars not so deep and dark. Lasrly Colin Farrells transformation into the Penguin is somethig that my brain cannot process. It causes my mind to glitch. Unreal.

There's a 5 minute long deleted scene from this movie where Batman and Joker have a conversation. It is incredible. I'd love to get your reaction to it. They took it out of the movie because it would have taken the spotlight off of Riddler.

Jim Carrey stayed true to the "Riddler" from the original Batman television series from the 60s. Adam West was Batman and Burt Ward was Robin. Then in 1990, Tim Burton directed a series of Batman movies with Michael Keaton as Batman, (then in the third it was Val Kilmer, and the Fourth was George Clooney) villians were Danny Devito as the Penguin, Arnold Swarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, Michelle Pfiefer as Catwoman, and Jim Carrey as the riddler. In the 2000s, Chirs Nolan did a trilogy with Christian Bale, Ben Affleck did a trilogy and more, and now this is a totally different imagining.

The Tim Burton Batman movie came out in 1989… his sequel (Batman Returns) came out in 1992. Batman Forever with Jim Carrey as Riddler wasn’t directed by Tim Burton, it was directed by Joel Schumacher. But it was still the same franchise

Like Batman 1989 & some of The Dark Knight trilogy a lot of "The Batman" 2022 was filmed in Britain 🇬🇧 (In particularly Liverpool, London & Glasgow in Scotland) & it sure does rain alot here!! 😂 A lot of Hollywood films now shoot sequences in Glasgow as the brick buildings are close to the look of American architecture especially New York. World War Z, The Batman, The Flash, (the cancelled) BatGirl & Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny have been shot there over the last decade or so

I really love this movie, pattinson did well, this is year 2 of bruce being batman so very new, and he gets swallowed up in the darkness, also called vengeance because many criminals has not seen him yet, they just heard of a dark figure that takes them down vith violence. Paul Dano does a fantastic job as the riddler, such a underrated actor he is always good in everything he does. Colin Farrell is unreconizable as the penguin. Also the end pretty much makes Batman realise he cant fix everything as Batman and be Bruce Wayne to with all the money and power he has. There will be a part 2 but earliest 2026 they have not started shooting it yet but its announced that Warner Bros wants it made.

I wasn't sure how I was going to like a Robert Pattinson Batman when this movie came out but, tbh, I think he killed it. I can understand why some people didn't like that he was "emo Batman" for the whole movie but I think those people are wrongly assuming that this is how Batman is going to be in all the movies. My understanding is that Matt Reeves is just setting this up as the beginning of Batman's character arc. This is young Batman, only two years into the job and he hasn't quite figured it out all out yet (which is why they include scenes like him eating asphalt with the wingsuit). He's also still mourning his parents and starts out this movie in "Batman is just vengeance" mode, so he hasn't seen the value in developing (or using) the Bruce Wayne side of his persona yet. The arc of this first movie is Batman learning that "just being vengeance" is sending the wrong message and not accomplishing what he wants to accomplish (he's just scaring the people of Gotham and inspiring the villains to put on masks and be extra crazy), so, by the end of the movie, he learns that he has to symbolize "hope" for the people of Gotham, not just revenge and violence. I have a feeling that, in the next movie, we'll see him begin to develop the "Bruce Wayne" persona so that he can use it to get into places, get info, etc. and that's where the classic Batman/Bruce we know from the comics will start to arise. Honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing him put on a fake smile and play up the "billionaire playboy, Bruce Wayne" alter-ego a little more in the next movie. I have a feeling they'll lean really hard on showing that "Bruce" is the mask he's wearing and that Batman is the real him, so I think it'll be cool to see that switch-up happen when he goes from being fake "Bruce" to super focused Batman. As for this movie, though, I love seeing a Batman movie finally show him being a detective, not just kicking baddie butt. In the comics, Batman was billed as "The World's Greatest Detective," and most Batman movies have ignored that part of his character. Can't wait to see more of that. I also really liked the way they modeled Riddler after the Zodiac killer in this one. In the old TV show and the old Batman movies (especially the one where Jim Carrey played the Riddler), they always just made him super corny and goofy and played him for laughs. Finally, in this one, they made a Riddler who was truly frightening. Also, they did a great job with Gotham in this one. You can see that they pulled a lot from the vibe of "Se7en" for the setting, with it raining all the time, the color grading, etc. Honestly, Matt Reeves tapped all the right influences to create a more dark and serious Batman and I love it.
