Old Japanese homes, like mine, have no air tightness or insulation beyond tatami mats and tsuchikabe. Do Japanese builders test for Radon levels? The young man is lucky to be working with a master carpenter.

I love the attention to detail such as the air tightness around the bolts and small spaces. And the way the insulation is installed is neat. Their subfloor seems a bit thicker than what we have i the States. And the diagonal bracing is good for extra sturdiness. Very nice. Respect. *Bow* :)

Common beam for flooring here is 90x90cmx400cm (its called Oobiki), 2x6 and 2x12 are not popular, and not commonly used here for flooring support. The size of most construction is often all designed to fit tatami mats size in the end.

“The Big Bad wolf” of typhoons can huff and puff and your project house will stand strong! No termite damage to plastic posts is nice bonus! Assume there is access to crawl space beneath insulated floor system? Earthquake protection too? Beautifully crafted house, so enjoyable to watch you create the space. Home owner(s) will have a superior art piece to live in!

Really good video and very nicely explained. BUT do you not need to leave expansion gap between the ply wood boards? If there are no expansion gap between the plywood the board will not be able to naturally expand and contract with weather and natural ground movement. This will result in a buckled surface.

@@oldmanfromscenetwentyfour8164 I didn't consider that. Most of my squeaks were from nails in the subfloor...likely a wet, mass-produced townhome construction unlike this amazing home build.

That's an interesting space below the floor. I wonder if filling it with styrofoam would improve insulation - although the local climate may make that unnecessary? And I also have warm water heating tubes running through the floor (ceramic tiles), which gives a very nice heating. That's not possible with wood like this. So I wonder how the heating and cooling is done in this building.
@BGP369

The air tightness will come at a cost. Adding tiny air holes isnt enough. The wood will rot in 20-30 years as it is untreated. To prevent this rot for my rennovation of a 250 year old kominka I am adding a solar powered duct fan set to humidity sensor. It doesnt need to be powerful, just needs to move some air sucking out of the floorspace to keep it dry and fresh.
@rsmith02
@rsmith02 6 ай бұрын
Solar powered duct fan will introduce hot humid air from the outside- I'd reconsider that.
@BGP369
@BGP369 6 ай бұрын
@@rsmith02 it will be worse with no air circulation, and that hot humid air is present regardless what I do. Airflow is the key.

I wonder why Oobiki crossed with Oobiki notched into existing Oobiki, rather than traditional Oobiki under, Neda over for flooring... first time i saw this. It looks great, and doesnt add the additional height of the Neda, but no one will see it after the flooring is installed :P

It's very different from how it's done here in Canada. This way looks much better and more sturdy than our way. It's a shame it will be completely invisible. The carpenter who does the renovation will appreciate it.
@BGP369
@BGP369 Ай бұрын
@@Stephen-uz8dm yeah, I am from Canada so I'm familiar with joists. The method here is superior in terms of support, but the metal feet under the subfloor will eventually rust unless kept dry. For that reason, and to prevent mold, I am planning to add a duct fan to circulate the underfloor space on a timer for my renovation here. Should keep the wood and metal nice and healthy for a good long while.
@Stephen-uz8dm
@Stephen-uz8dm Ай бұрын
@@BGP369 air circulation is always good. I've been on some renovations of 90 year old cabins on the beach where the breeze practically blows through the walls and the framing lumber is absolutely immaculate bone dry old growth fir ready to be used again. I've also been on renovations of much newer buildings with vapor barriers between everything, with a lot more rot and mold etc.

The level of craftsmanship, products, and techniques is unheard of here in California. The home builders here in the SF Bay Area slap houses together with substandard materials using a labor force that doesn't require the knowledge of the trade they work in. It's refreshing to watch you work with the quality materials at your disposal, and sad to think what we have here.
