He was my neighbor when I was a little kid. I wish I remembered more about him but my dad said he'd be up literally all night every night running through scales. Imo hes the greatest guitarist alive

I seen Jimmy Herring on John McLaughlin’s, Meeting of The Spirits tour in 2017, Clearwater Florida. Jimmy’s band The Invisible Whip and John’s Fourth Dimension did their own sets then both bands did a full set of Mahavisnu Orchestra’s classics. Both Jimmy and John were on fire that night. 3.5 hour show. It was amazing. But I’ve seen Jimmy many times with Wide Spread Panic. A very well respected guitarist.

1991, New Orleans in a club called tipatinas, saw Jimmy with col Bruce Hampton. His playing and that of Matt Mundy on mandolin blew my 19 year old mind. And they were just the opening act for a young and hungry Phish. That night was One of the best music experiences I’ve ever had.

One of the greatest guitar slingers and one of the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. From his time with Col. Bruce and ARU to filling in for Jerry with the Dead when Jerry passed to his time with Widespread Panic he’s easily one of the greatest to do it. AND ITS NOT AN OVER STATEMENT TO SAY HE MIG(T ALSO BE THE NICEST MOST HUMBLE TO EVER DOMIT TOO. LOVE YA Jimmy! Thank you. ❤️🙏🏽

Oh yeah, Mr Herring is a serious cat for sure, quite off the deep end of shredding. I first met him when I went to GIT in 85 to 86 and he was only 22 years old. He was one of the top students in the entire school and was asked to be an instructor upon his graduation! Got to see him live 4x.... Twice with Colonel Bruce and twice with Jazz is Dead. And Oteil is definitely one of the top bass players I've ever seen live!

In the early 2000 I go to see the Allman Bros Band with Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring on guitars. Most people in the audience, incuding myself, had never heard either guy. Needless to say it was fucking shocking.

Your transcribing skills are second to none Levi. It’s like you were born to transcribe. Yes Herring is an incredible player. His style is very similar to Morse. He cites Steve as his biggest influence. You can tell if you listen to his early stuff. Fantastic transcription. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Yes Levi. Love the Dregs , and Morse is my favorite player. I remember Steve saying in an interview that if something ever happened to him where was unable to play, he would name Jimmy as his replacement in the Dregs, because Jimmy can play all of his songs, and that he was a top shelf player!

People who know really have heard of him, but great to spread the word. Its crazy to see the list of 'best' guitarists, and not have him or Robin Trower on it. Just shows musical ignorance on different styles.
