Even if it's a Chinese wedding, the point is that it's still noisy what. So it's not particularly Malay weddings, it's the noise
@xiaxue7 жыл бұрын
Yup. It's not racist to say a malay wedding is noisy, just like it isn't racist to say a Chinese funeral is noisy too (they are). Facts are just facts, and facts don't care about your feelings.
@BigmanDogs7 жыл бұрын
I'm European so I don't come it contact with discussions about identity politics in Asia and judging from this video it seems like Chinese (and all Northeast Asians?) are the white people of East Asia. You can say and do anything to them and it can't be racist.
@oliveoakapple7 жыл бұрын
Bigman Dogs not entirely, it's just that Singapore is the only country other than Mainland China/Taiwan/Hongkong/Macau with a Chinese majority. So we're the 'white people' here, so to speak.
@looneytuneeeeeeee1237 жыл бұрын
when people are saying malay weddings are noisy, they are not exactly referring to the malays, saying that they hated the race, their culture blah blah blah. is just the ceremony taken place that annoys or irritating to someone as their personal opinion. if there isn't any label, chinese malay indian or any religion, just referring simply to ceremony itself, people would still say its noisy. it doesn't matters if they replace to a different form of ritual, it will still noisy, doesn't matter drummers or dong dong qiang, people will still complain noisy af. i don't get it how is this racist even.... so are we not allowed to even complain or bitch about it?
@BigmanDogs7 жыл бұрын
+ oliveoakapple Yeah that is true I suppose Singapore is one of the only places that is culturally diverse (with origins from different places of the world) and western style identity politics are actually possible to be practised. Unless a country with a huge population like India and China becomes more developed in the currently rural areas so that different cultures within their own borders come in contact with each other much more. And yeah I'm sure white people receive some sort of different treatment since Singapore is one of many former colonies of Asia. Though it's important to differentiate it from what is considered white privilege in the West. "White privilege" As it's used in the West is incredibly Euro/America-centric and can't really be used elsewhere in the same way. It's the privilege of being part of the norm/majority and as such not identical in Asia where that's almost never the case. When mentioning places such as Asia educated radical feminists (who I disagree with) are very quick to mention that they are exclusively talking about their own country's situation and you can't just copy their logic onto another part of the world. In Singapore's case, it's the Chinese that receives the privilege of being the norm and even Radical Feminists can accept that white isn't the norm exactly everywhere. Westerners receive another from of treatment exclusive to "white privilege" of the west. This because it's in some (lesser) cases entirely negative ones since most Asians have a negative opinion on westerners as previous oppressors, even if they aren't from a previously colonial nation. And they can also receive negative treatment that is part of being a minority but often less of it as they are western. Asians are not brainwashed like western feminists like to believe. They can and will hold genuine hatred towards Westerners as previous and in some cases current oppressors.

Your point is completely out of context. You’re obviously cherry picking, what the Indian girl said had a point. But you just want an excuse to bash them.
@leejiawei45766 жыл бұрын
David Yasutake W-what?! I swear I know Indian and Malay friends who speak Mandarin sooo much better than I do. It’s just the truth. But just like what Xiaxue said, to minorities it’s racism, to the majority it’s bullshit.
@davidyasutake79856 жыл бұрын
Lee Jia Wei ‘Mandarin speaking people’ does not exclude Indians and Malays who can speak Mandarin. Note she didn’t specifically say ‘Chinese people’. Also , if the minority feel unjust , MAYBE we should be listening to their concerns? Of course if you’re part of the majority , your natural human instinct is to not give a fuck about the minority as long as if benefits you. You wouldn’t understand the plight of the minority unless you’re part of them because their feelings and experiences does not apply to you but it doesn’t mean it’s not valid. You took one sentence out of the video , you nitpicked , to try to justify that the whole video is bullshit, without even TRYING to understand the context and issue of the video.
@leejiawei45766 жыл бұрын
David Yasutake she literally said that “unless it is a specific job where you need Mandarin-speaking people” to the point “Not hire someone based on their race.” It’s clearly shown here that she feels it’s okay to hire someone based on their race when you need “Mandarin-speaking people”. Maybe watch the video again before replying. [4:12]

I really don't get why people make such a big deal about race. The people that say they imbrace all races are always the ones to say someone is being racist. Like who cares anymore just say what you want as long as its not meant to deliberately hurt someones feelings. Wear what you want to wear. I grew up in a very hateful environment because my fathers family hated the fact my mother was White (Polish). My mothers white family never said anything racist to my father nor ever made us feel unwelcome because we were biracial. But my fathers Mohawk family also did. Its always the people that say they have experienced the most racism that are the most racist. I just dont care anymore. I wish everyone would just do the same. People are people leave it at that.

I watched both videos and I agree on some parts with Xiaxue and some parts with the millennials. But after scrolling through the comments, a lot of them are cherry picking and bashing the Indian girl and tbh that is completely unfair. If you guys want an objective view on this subject, (and I know most of you guys are fans of Xiaxue), it is better not to just blindly agree with Xiaxue because some of her points are completely out of context, and constantly bashing the millennials throughout the video is just shedding negative light on them and is not helping with the discussion on this subject. Some points raised by the millennials were relevant, some were not. And the same goes to Xiaxue’s videos. So think critically and think for yourselves before you take to the comments to slam these millennials , whom I think deserve to be respected even if your opinion differs from theirs. Kudos to them for bringing up an important issue and accepting criticism , especially since in todays world where race and religion are being used as divisive tools all over the globe.

All throughout my school life I have always seen myself and my fellow friends from minority communities get ostracized for their skin tone and looks. I was always called disgusting and ugly. But no one seemed to talk about this issue. It was always brushed off as casual fun. NO. These types of things can take a toll on you and it forms a deep seeded hatred in people. I totally understand why that girl kept using " Chinese " . Because that is how much they have affected her. I am happy that people are finally talking about this. I just hate it when people like you try to trivialize this issue. Racism exists and it cannot be brushed off.
@xiaxue7 жыл бұрын
What do you suggest is the solution? Do you think the people who call you disgusting and ugly (I presume you have proof it's for your race, you could be just disgusting and ugly regardless. Plenty of disgusting and ugly Chinese people) will watch a Millennials of SG video and suddenly decide they shouldn't be racist? No, they still will be. You can stop them from saying you are disgusting and ugly, but you cannot stop them from thinking it or force them to like you. Do you think rudely and hostilely telling Chinese people they should stfu because they have Chinese Privilege and therefore their opinions mean less will work towards making them like minorities more, if they are already racist? No, it's gonna make them like minorities LESS. You can add sensitive to your disgusting and ugly. You think it's justified that the Indian girl kept mentioning Chinese because Chinese have affected her that much? We are justifying racism now are we? So if a white man got robbed a few times by black people it is ok for him to say all black people are criminals and thugs because he was personally affected? That sounds like a dangerous road to go down. I'm not trying to fucking trivialise the issue. I am saying there is a difference between real racism and perceived racism (such as wearing a bindi). SJWs who bunch everything up and call everything racist are the ones trivialising racism. Not me. Let me give you an analogy here... You: Look at my wound, it is infected and festering and it's really painful. Me: Oh no! You: Yeah to solve the problem I will eat a painkiller. Me: That's not going to solve the problem. You: YOU ARE TRIVIALISING MY PAIN!!! IS MY PAIN NOT IMPORTANT TO YOU. YOU ARE NOT HUMAN. WOUNDS ARE REAL. Me: Oh god just shut the fuck up. If you cannot tell the difference between criticising a solution and trivialising a problem I cannot help you.
@harakiri58787 жыл бұрын
Xiaxue Well as I had mentioned I was called a disgusting Indian and my dark skin was called "shit colored". I would assume these are direct remarks on my race. I was extremely ashamed of my race as a child due to the constant hate by a majority community. I do not want to go into detail but you seem to be missing the point. It's ok to talk about what racism is. It's ok to raise awareness about it instead of brushing it off as nothing and joking about it. There is no need to ridicule people for it.
