You know what’s funny is that, looking through all the “Beano tone” KZbin videos, people talking about the Les Paul, Clapton’s vibrato technique, how his amp was mic’d, and everything else under the sun… *except* basic amp settings, which “should be” an essential starting point. I think I just went through about 7 videos before I got to one that shows or mentions the amp settings - yours. So thanks for that, and kudos for having the common sense to include what should be an obvious key element.

It sounds great. Clapton’s probably had the Alnico speakers but the greenbacks sound good too. Some believe he had treble and presence at 10 and pulled back the excessive highs with his guitar’s tone controls. I’ve done it that way with good results too, but really, if you have a JTM45 combo, a Les Paul, and a good player, you can get the Beano tone without having to go down rabbit holes. You’ve got all three covered and it sounds great.

So what is the wattage of the bluesbreaker that you are using ?
@Guitarjosii Жыл бұрын
It has 30 watts as far as I know 🙂

From pictures it looked like Clapton's amp was miked up from about three feet away using a Neumann KM 56. This was a twin diaphragm small diameter valve condenser mic, probably used in cardioid mode. To get even closer to the Beano sound you really need a mic that's further away from the amp to get more room sound, which would really require a different mic as the SM57 will lose a lot of bass end without the close-in proximity effect. But a good effort!
@Guitarjosii Жыл бұрын
If I have to be honest, I didn't really look into the original recordings beforehand either. I borrowed the Bluesbreaker and the Les Paul and my first thought was: Let's see if I can get a Beano sound. Unfortunately I don't own any good recording equipment, only the SM57. But thanks! :-)

Forget the mindless mic theories. It tends to be the last leg of a pointless debate. You nailed that tone man. And did so outside of a studio, without a mixing desk, group of engineers, identical equipment and without some laundry list of speculative notes based on ancient photos/film. Just rest easy knowing you’ve made plenty of us happy (and maybe a little envious 😂) with the upload my dude!

And don't forget a curly lead, or a much longer straight lead. The curls added a lot of length and so added extra capacitance and took some of the high frequencies away.

Sure its a great tone and a real deal amp & LP combo, but I hear you can buy a Bad Monkey pedal for $550.00 and copy any sound you want now perfectly ;)

Yeah I have read that Clapton might have used a Dallas Rangemaster for the record - no problem for the Bad Monkey to achieve that exact sound 😏

@@GuitarjosiiThe engineer Gus Dudgeon said no treble booster was used on the album. This video and others on here prove a treble booster is not needed for the tone.
