In WW2, my dad was a US, B-25 Mitchell, bomber pilot, stationed in N. Africa. Flying into Morocco, and moving eastward across Africa, as the Germans fell back. And bombing up into Europe. Eventually, their base was Corsica. But... But alll through the various bases they had in N. Africa. The Gurka's guarded the planes at night, from sabotage. And as my dad said.... When the sun went down....nobody would ever venture out of their camp, to go down near the planes. As while you may not see them...you'd find yourself with Gurkas right behind you. That you didn't take the chance they might mistake you for someone else. That they never ever once, had anybody touch or get near a plane. And the GI's never risked being near the planes at night. Dad could not speak highly enough, as to how outstanding the Gurkas were.

Nepal received very little after its earthquake. ....and received a little more to aid abolition of human trafficking. ...... But..... Where is the debt of honour being paid to the Nepalese people? Surely out of our gigantic aid bill Of 9 billion ...we could and should Pay our debt of honour to these Loyal and brave people. Still parts of Nepal carry unrepaired damage from the earthquake.... @Dynamic Overlord.. Has the responsibility for the recruitment of soldiers not been handed to a civilian company? I read an article not so long ago that said thousands apply each year for the army but eventually withdraw their applications due to the long winded application process. Some are left waiting for 12 months and beyond. When I applied in the mid 80's I walked into the local recruitment office in February. By the end of April I'd completed all my assessments at Sutton Coldfield and been given a start date of July to begin basic training.

Seen some videos about the selection of these guys and even the third or forth best who failed seem better than the average british recruit. I think GB should try to keep as many as they can after service, not because they owe the soldiers something but because they represent great human capital. Loyalty, hard work and discipline are in short supply these days.

During Hong Kong's colonial days, my friends and I, three women and three men in our twenties, were hiking in Sai Kung when the hell, oops sorry, when hails as big as golf balls started to fall on our bodies. We ran the hell, yes hell, with our sacks on our heads, out of the wild and onto the road. We stopped a Land Rover of the Hong Kong Garrison with Gurkhas speaking little English. Unable to communicate much, to the horrors of the servicemen, we simply pushed our three girlfriends on board and waved them, the Gurkhas, away. After some internal communications among themselves, the Land Rover drove off, with reluctance on the Gurkhas' faces - well, understandably, they are servicemen and must be on orders to do something else. We met our friends about two hours later and they have nothing but thanks and high praises to the Gurkhas who treated them as much as gentlemen could do in a cramped environment. The kind Gurkhas dropped them in the Sai Kung town area. A delightful piece of memory. Thank you, Gurkhas. You are not only brave soldiers, you are also kind gentlemen when the circumstances justify.

The main reason behind Britain recruiting Nepalese to this day is the difficulty they faced trying to annex Nepal with their modern artillery and 10 times the soldiers. And then, they recruited Nepalese to fight for them in WW1 and WW2. They know how Gorkhas feel about their enemies and their friends. I am proud of both histories.

I'm from Manchester U.K, I'm not sure the Americans really know that much about the Gurkhas or have that much fear or respect for them, but let me tell you, they are the most feared warriors on this planet, in certain situations, soldiers have fought with US troops or UK troops, but when they heard the Brits were sending in the Gurkhas they all surrender immediately, they have big curved blades and will mutilate you, they are really savage fighters, they are truly feared by all, they used to cut their enemies penis off and put them on a necklace so later they could prove how many kills they got, that's not allowed anymore. They are fanatical to join up, it's a tradition for them to try to become a Gurkha, and their families best wish for their sons are that they are chosen to fight in the British Gurkha Regiment, it brings great honor on the family, and the boy is propelled from a poor farming village to be a highly skilled warrior on a good wage, lifetime pension and full UK citizenship for life. They are so proud to be part of us and we are so proud of them and their courage, bravery, and loyalty to our Country and Queen. We are incredibly privileged to have this relationship with Nepal and its people. Some of the stories of their achievements need to be researched to be believed, there are many books written on them, read about them, they are incredible and amazing.
