Hey Jon! I travel to the US from Germany on a regular basis with groups. Since the pandemic, I've been to New York and Los Angeles twice, and Miami once. I think it's always important to know what to expect. When I'm in L.A., I know that there will not only be palm trees and the luxurious Hollywood lifestyle, but also tents of homeless people and individuals with mental instability on the Walk of Fame. When I go to New York, I know it's going to be expensive and crowded. Since I follow your rules about being street smart and using common sense, I have never encountered a dangerous situation in New York-and I've been there a dozen times. That's why I think channels like yours are important: they show the good and the bad without freaking people out or glorifying only the positive sides. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Tomy

Although I was annoyed by the $40/day "resort fee" which was new to us, we will still return next year and see if we can find a hotel outside of the "resort" area. Just spent 2 weeks in Crown Heights, Brooklyn apartment sitting. 3rd time visiting the city, last time was in 2014. Rode the subway exclusively in and out of the city and bus to LaGuardia and only once did a man seem unsafe, near the Bronx Zoo, but it wasn't directed at anyone, just a mental health episode. There is something to be said about the fact that when living in a dense city you can't ignore those aspects of society, you have to confront them. Compared to Los Angeles the homeless issue is minimal. Your videos were super invaluable to me, the absolute super hero of the trip was the Stavros Niarchos Library. Got a million photos of locations recommended in your various videos. Being from Florida, I found the Orlando comment ironic because I find parts of Orlando pretty unsafe, especially for lost tourists in rental cars with loads of cash.
@ontheroad55552 ай бұрын
@LoridaMan Wasn't Orlando the place where several people got murdered at a gay nightclub? So many guns in Florida yet not the police or other citizens were able to stop the gunman before he took many lives. NYC usually doesn't have those types of mass murders of complete strangers except for the Happy Land fire in the Bronx when the jealous man torched the dance club where people were trapped and killed. Most of the other mass shootings occur in other parts of New York state like the murders at the supermarket in Buffalo where a man went on a shooting rampage killing only black customers.

Visited NYC at the very beginning of May this year. We booked our hotels more than half a year in advance and that was not too expensive. It costed us less than 2000 dollars for 4 adults (4 nights in Soho and 4 nights in Williamsburg). There were not that many tourists, we took the Staten Island Ferry, we used the Roosvelt Island tramway. Overall we did all the touristy things and it was fine. The weather in May was also perfect. The weirdest thing was that you could actually save money on food, there are so many cheap options, you just have to investigate it before you go. I am from Lithuania and it was not much of a difference (obviously if you are not eating at high class restaurants.) It didn't feel unsafe even when we went out to bars late at night. We didn't use the metro late at night and it was ok. There were some trash outside but that's the case of every big city. It wasn't unbearable. About the weed - yes, you can smell it everywhere all the time. There are no people around you - you can still smell it. But it did not bother us. Overall it was a great trip, I would recommend it and would go again.

But I do agree the hotels are quite annoying with adding on extra resort fee per night making an extra 300 or so dollars on top of the original price paid for the hotel room for the week. But there's still a few good hotels that just have a city tax and isnt as expensive as other hotels with the "resort fees". In 2022 we stayed at the kixby and it was very clean & cheap & lovely rooms but now they have added around a 25 dollars per night resort fee onto the room price for the week so sadly we aren't staying there again this year and chose the Arlo Midtown instead as is cheaper. My kudos to you for a well-balanced commentary. I'm a regional resident who visits the city frequently, so these issues are front and center for me. Quick thoughts: 1) The very existence of "hordes of tourists" demonstrates the appeal of NYC, high costs notwithstanding 2) Statistically it is still one of the safest cities in North America 3) Many of NYC's problems are nationwide if not worldwide. 4) The old newspaper adage "If it bleeds, it leads" is reflected in some of these headlines, particularly from the sensationalist New York Post. I live in Belgium and going to New York has always been my childhood dream. I visited NY alone last year in september, spent 17 days there and it was the best trip I ever made in my life. I prepared it 6 months in advance, booked an airbnb and plane, bought tickets for every museum or attraction I wanted to visit. I even took a train to spend a day in DC and a bus for 1 day in Philadelphia. I had a budget for all that and I only spent half of it. When you're well prepared and organised you can visit this city at a cheap cost, you just have to do your research. Even the food is very affordable if you know where to look. I visited every famous landmark in NY, been in all 5 boroughs, every observatory, all islands around Manhattan... everything you can think of I did it. I used the subway, bike, cabs, boats, buses, the RI tramway, and of course on foot. Not a single second I felt unsafe, even late at night. Police is everywhere, most of the areas are crowded so you never feel alone. And as for the erratic behaviour or homeless people I was expecting to see that so I didn't really pay attention. For me it was part of the NY experience. Everyone who want to visit NY, do it, believe me you won't regret it, it's an amazing city. There are other cities in the world that I'd love to visit. If it wasn't for that I'd go to NY every year.

Used to live in London, when we were laughing about Americans cutting the holidays short because they ran out of money. Yes, London was "expensive" but it was not made impossible to take shortcuts or being creative when saving money. Same in NYC - just think of the 1980s "Loft Law" that was pro-artist and pro-creativity ... nowadays, political activism is systematically destroying all opportunities to make ends meet in creative ways, which is especially hard for those on a fixed income. In a way, we "voted ourselves into a corner" - a pattern you can see everywhere in the Western world, where the political "delusions du jour" and simplistic black/white thinking made people forget reality.

We used the subway even after 9 pm, and we used the NYC Ferry,the states island ferry too, we absolutely cannot wait to go back, hopefully during the next holidays❤

Prices are not only high in NYC. I’m planning a trip to Virginia and hotels are going for $300 a night there too. I’ve just decided to stay a little farther out and drive 20 minutes everyday to the city which cut my hotel expenses in half

I went to NYC and saw the Rockefeller tree lighting with my young kids. When walking back to my hotel a man yelled “it’s too late for them kids to be out, get em to bed” to which I replied “we saw the tree lighting”. He replied with “oh yeah?!” and I said “yep”. And then another man yelled at the guy that yelled at me and said “you really showed him!!” And then turned to me and said “enjoy your stay, your kids are fine” 😂

I’ve tried other American cities like St. Louis, Memphis, etc….. They are the opposite with ghost towns and empty downtowns. It’s kind of shocking how other famous American cities have severely declined. As a result it does make NYC more valuable

Took a 4 day trip with my BF last year, we booked through a company that does organized group trips, chose an option that allowed us to do our own things rather then follow the group all weekend, but 525$. CAD got us transportation via coach, 3 nights stay at the Doubletree in Newark, 3 breakfasts, a guided tour of Central Park and a boat tour to see the Statue of Liberty up close! As for the sketchy part, actually encountered less homeless ppl and druggies than I do back home in the Ottawa region and well the smell of weed, I’m from Canada, everything smells like weed here! I would definitely do it again!

Honestly love the response you essentially give to everyone claiming that NY is on the downturn. Just returned from our visit! Got an incredible deal near battery park for under 200 a night in a major chain! The rooms were nice, walking distance to the ferry and subway. The city was clean, the food was incredible and super affordable. I can't begin to explain how much fun we had exploring the Lower East Side, Midtown, and Canal st. Can't wait to return! 🍻 Felt completely safe the entire trip.

I think it’s totally worth it! I spent four days in May near Penn Station on 8th Ave, and as John says, you have to do your homework and be prepared. Remember, it’s a city with millions of people, not a giant amusement park, so there are things you should expect. I’m heading back in December to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree! John’s videos have been a great help!

I live in nyc and i have noticed a significant decrease in quality of life this year. Recently i have seen more human poop in public, migrants living in parks, and excessive litter. Nothing is being done about it and unfortunately the city spending all their money on the hotels, instead of making resident life better

@@Smart_Think In my opinion I think Mayor Adams will face a big reckoning in Nov 2025. Also residents must vote for their City Council who also determines what happens in NYC .In the Town hall meetings esp in Brooklyn residents are NOT pleased at all!!!

Everything single thing you are describing about NYC in 2024 completely matches NYC in 1977. Except for the elephant in the room: At least it was affordable in 1977. If it were possible, I would time travel back to NYC in 1977 to take a vacation over 2024 in a heartbeat. Seriously.

Used to come to the city since the late 90s, sometimes on business, sometimes for cultural input and visiting friends. NYC used to be clean, safe & affordable ... not any more. Having said that - you will never find me anywhere near the classic tourist routes (but rather at a Brooklyn thrift store or somewhere in Queens) and even my way of traveling light and cheap has become almost impossible these days: I was usually renting a room from people who were also living in their properties and I made great friends that way - but all of this has disappeared. I just returned to the EU after a 3-week trip to the US (which was great BTW) but I have NO plans to return to NYC anytime soon. *NYC has become obsessed with political activism and the hare-brained laws that come with being stuck in delusional echo chambers... well, this might not affect the nouveau-riche jet-set from shopping at Tiffany's, but it certainly prevents a younger demographic from accessing the many cultural offerings unique to NYC.*
@ramencurry66722 ай бұрын
NYC is better now compared to the 90s because the bars and restaurants are much better now.
@genreartwithjb5095Ай бұрын
Native New Yorker here - crime is way down from the late 80s. As far as”political activism” I mean the cops have been out of control in the past. Guiliani didn’t clean up the city when you were here as much as he just shipped all of the “ undesirables” aka poor people of color up to Albany and washed his hands of the situation. You live in the EU - think about why causes crime and homelessness, lack of shelter. In the Us it’s pretty easy to become homeless and if you’re homeless you will turn to crime. If you can’t afford a trip to the doctor and they put a lien on your house to pay a medical bill you could end up on the street and now you are either scavenging or stealing to get by. Things that you take for granted - universal healthcare, and strong benefits if you lose your job, and depending on the country paid leave would help ameliorate crime more the. Increasing the size of the police force.

I visited NYC earlier this year in March, and had a great trip. I had also seen reports about crime both in town and on the Subway, but as you say, as long as you are aware of your surroundings and take care, it doesn't have to be a problem. I also see a lot about costs, and like anywhere, NYC can cost a lot if you want it to or aren't careful (hitting all the overpriced 'touristy spots'), but you can eat, drink and see a lot of attractions without breaking the bank. I am currently pricing up, and about to hit the button on another trip to NYC for March 2025. Love NYC.

I just got back from New York with my family. We loved it and found the subways much more safe and clean than our west coast city. My favorite activity was renting an electric bike at the South Seaport and riding along the Hudson river all the way to Harlem and back.
