So for the holiday stuff use Groupon. We got rockette tickets like 5 rows from the front the 29th of December a few years back for like 25 bucks a person. Only thing is that these tickets will not be refunded or changed if something happens like Covid. But we got two tickets for under 50 bucks and great seats.

Tourist should take the uber everywhere. Do not take the subways. Its not worth it. Ive lived in NYC for over 45 yrs. I know. If a tourist paid a flight or train ride here, dont go cheap with the subway. Pay the damn money for private transport.

The rooftop bar wasn't open to dine but you could still go out there to look around. Totally agree: the view from there is awesome (got some epic night time photos) and the desserts are pretty good. Our West Coast kids got a kick out of seeing where the ball drops. Thanks for all your videos - they're such a help in planning even if you've been to the city before. Great advice Jon ❤. The public transport issues are challenging if you can’t walk very well. One underestimated way is to use buses if you can get up onto it. I know it’s slower sometimes, but you do get to see a lot of the local sights you’d miss otherwise. The hop on/hop off bus is great too if you can’t use the subway, I used it to move from one end of Manhattan to the other, hopping in and off as needed. Keep up the great work ❤❤❤

Me and my family returned a week ago from seven day trip to NY. Thanks to your tips the journy was pleasant and not really expensive. We ordered one Broadway show a months ago, just to be sure we're having a good seats. Next day we saw a second show, but this time we bought tickets from the theater box office on the show day for $50. The seats were meh, as we expected, and half of the stage was blocked, but we could switch seats after break and enjoyed the rest. What was disappointing are food carts. The food was not inviting, and the most of all their generators are annoying. They mostly generate pollution as of the air as of the sound. The noise is unbearable. But the rest of the trip was pure fun. Thanks again

I had a discussion with a restaurant manager about my dislike of waitstaff standing beside me while I select a tip amount on their electronic billing pad. I think tipping is personal and requires time to reflect on the service, not a time to feel rushed, with eyes looking over my shoulder. The manager agreed, saying that was not supposed to happen. He promised to speak to his staff to remind them not to do it but to leave the pad with the customer, then return later to collect it. It's hard to ask for privacy when it isn't a usual request but I'm learning.

We did a Hop On, Hop Off bus when we visited 7 years ago because we found a "great" deal on Groupon. We enjoyed seeing parts of the city we hadn't yet walked too, but found even the discounted price wasn't worth it. We took a tour that included a pre-recorded audio description of the history of the buildings and significant landmarks we were seeing on the tour. However, the audio doesn't account for delays due to traffic and we ended up about 1-2 blocks behind what was being described on the audio. We also found that the traffic noise drowned out the audio. We ended up ditching the audio portion about halfway through and just enjoyed the sights. A better option is using Free Tours by Foot (a pay what you want tour group). We took 5 tours in four days with them and found them to be extremely informative and by far the best way to see the city. For some reason we were the only Americans on the majority of our tours, but we didn't mind.

My husband and I took our first trip to NYC in 1998 and took the Hop On/Off tour. At that time they had real people on the buses doing the narration. We did the downtown tour (42nd Street to the Financial District and back) and loved the older guy talking about everything. He was obviously a New Yorker and had opinions!!! We thought it was worth the money (I forget how much) because we saw a lot of the city on what was a short vacation.

Thanks for the great video, Jon! Serious question - when you go to Katz, can you ask them them to put a half portion of pastrami on your sandwich? (Still offering to pay full price of course). You absolutely do not have to just accept tipping. If a tip is tacked onto the bill automatically, it must be noted on the menu. Otherwise, you don't have to tip at all, definitely not at a coffee shop or for takeout. Also, food is actually not that expensive in the city. Most of those expensive midtown restaurants are for tourists who don't know any better. Just like the hotels, get out of the midtown bubble for much better food at a fraction of the price.
@hassanalihusseini17174 ай бұрын
Yes that tipping business is very confusing in the USA, especially when you live in a country (like I do) where tipping is not very common (only sometimes in tourist areas).

I tend to Uber to manhattan from LaGuardia. It’s flat rate. Taxis are ridiculous as it’s $50 plus tax and tip so really like $75 total, it was a huge shock the first time I took the taxi. Well $50 the first time I went to nyc as the rates have gone up so hence the Uber swap.

Your advise about walking instead of taking a hop on hop off bus makes sense if you do not have a disability or if you are not travels a senior with limited mobility. I would like to see a video with tourist advice on sightseeing in NY for traveling with seniors or people with disabilities. For instance the subway sounds like a good idea, however I have only seen stairs to get into them. I am traveling with my 81 year old mother who uses a walker/rollator and also cannot do more than a few steps on a staircase, so I don’t even know if we can use the subway instead of an Uber.

I remember going into the city in the days of Koch. First, tipping. A tip is 10%. Anything more you're being generous or stupid. I used to work for Tips, so I know the math. And even in the early 2000s, with 10% tips, I could come out of pocket at $1,200 a month and still have spending money. Working at a small local pizza place doing deliveries. If 10% ain't enough work better, have the owner raise prices.
@1214764 ай бұрын
Some of these are good but also some are bad. People want to enjoy their vacation. Not penny pinch their way to a miserable time. My point is 90% of your costs are going to be your flight and hotel. Might as well spend an extra 5% to actually have a good time

Thanks for the video! Wondering if you could do one about weed. I don’t know if you smoke weed, but we got a pre-rolled joint from one of those vans in Times Square a year or so ago. It cost $40 (a rip off!) and the weed was beat. I even asked in advance if it was CBD or Delta-9 or some other “fake” weed, but the guy insisted it was real. There are a lot of dispensaries in NYC now. We are from Philly so we usually bring out own from home on the train, but tourists from outside the area might not feel comfortable taking it onto a plane so would need to buy some in town and not want to pay too much or get a product that isn’t any good.

Know that $3 that John says is the median. The more touristy the area, the higher the cost. But it should not be higher than $5. Yikes, even that's pretty high.
