Totally agree with Ed. We did it a little differently, as we lived in the ghetto for 7-8yrs while saving to build our "forever home". Granted we always had nice vehicles to drive, but living there allowed us to save to put a substantial amount down on our forever home which we designed ourselves and contracted out to build. There was 3 main things on my list. #1 I wanted a bigger than normal garage, I hate houses were garages are so small you can barely get out of your own vehicle so mine has a 25x25 garage where our daily vehicles go. #2 I wanted a shop for my personal use that could accommodate a 2-post lift and went with a 2000sqft shop with 3 14x14 roll ups, this is where the SLC and Hayabusa stay along with plenty of left over space to use and work on stuff. #3 doesn't apply here, but I wanted a movie room. Rest of the house I didn't really care about design, as long as I approved of what the wife was doing. 4yrs later I couldn't be happier with my choice.

My wife and I bought our home in 1981 for $54,000.00. it didn't have a garage, but what it did have is a septic system with a drain field that took up most of the back yard. Finally in the early 2000s, they brought city sewer down my road. After years of laying on my back, pulling engines and transmissions, I now had the chance to get my garage. I built a 26 x 56 two story with two two-post lifts and three bays. I can now store five cars in my garage. It's not a dream garage, but it is a huge improvement over a driveway and a jack.

My parents have been going through this same thing for years in the Sacramento area. We have 21 cars and of course, there's nothing out there that can fit that specific need. After 2 years of searching, they finally found a place just outside of Sacramento that overlooks Folsom Lake that has space for 12 cars underneath the house. Still, this obviously isn't enough and wanting to move out of California entirely, they've decided to build their dream house where I currently live in Logan Utah. While the house itself will have a "normal" 4 car garage on the main level, underneath the house, they are building what I refer to as "the bat cave." It is enough space for 19 cars plus a workshop for restoring and working on them. Additionally, they are configuring a space within this construction to allow them to wash the cars in the winter. Construction won't be starting for another year or so, but I will send pictures and video when it's under way.

I have a “three” car garage and it’s basically like 2 normal sedans and a Miata in the back stall. You could probably park three normal sized cars in it but you’d have like literally an inch between bumper and wall, and bumper to garage door. We just use a car port (tacky I know) and park two cars under it. Then we have one other parked behind the port in the drive way and two on the street. We need to clean our garage and put some in there but there’s three motorcycles (not my thing) in the garage currently.

Found a house with a great garage but I went by on a rainy day and the rec room was flooded. My current game plan is having my house built. I've been working on plans for a barndominium setup with an apartment over a shop. Order steel built to size and put the whole thing together like tinker toys. Should be comparable in cost with other houses in my market in terms of livable sq.ft. Currently shopping for a building site. FHA has zones for development with attractive interest rates. My house is on a hill overlooking the water, and we loved the location initially, but after a few years decided it was too small. After looking around at other houses, I decided to just add a 1200sf addition onto the back. Thinking of how to work this in my favor instead of just my wife, I had the contractor dig deeper on the back side, and added a second 1200sf lower floor below the new addition, to create a 30x40 shop. Now, in addition to the existing 2 car standard garage, (which my wife never got to park in because I usually have a project car in progress), I have room for 5 cars, or at least four if I happen to have a build going. Best thing I ever did, of course my wife still has to park outside because I acquired even more project cars.!

Years back when mom and dad bought their current home I remember dad was super excited and mom was relieved to get the house. The house had a walkout basement which allowed for a typical two-car garage for daily drivers on the main level, and a further 6 car garage on the basement level with an additional space that could be used as a shop or showroom for 2 or 3 cars. It's now twenty years later and they still live there, but it still wasn't enough Dad still ended up building a second building as a dedicated shop, and more recently mom and dad bought an old gas station that had gone out of business and converted it into a mancave/hunting lodge with its own garage space... LOL it's just never enough!

Good video, I also lived in a commercial garage , installed a shower stall, 40 gallon water heater , and washer dryer , just no stove because then it becomes a dwelling , had all 6 of my cars and trucks in there and did it for 3 years and it was amazing , truly miss having all the indoor storage , but I bought a house and , also ran into the same problem searching for a house with a large garage , but settled for a 2 car with plenty of land to put up a large garage for the future if I stay , but still miss the garage life

I agree 100% on the house thing since I lived it. I bought a three car garage house and ended up building a separate 2/3 car garage on the property within a year of purchasing it, roughly $50k with the additional concrete I wanted and redoing my entire driveway here in Northern IL. I searched Redfin, Realtor.com, and all over trying to find something before buying this house. Even Redfin wasn't 100% accurate because people listed garage space as parking space. I think another helpful thing to include in a house listing is IF a garage could be built on the property and if the township/association permiteded. I almost bought a different house and would have later found out I couldn't build a detached per the association.

I currently live in a warehouse with my best friend on my dads property it is about 4,000 square feet. I use the space to work on my 56 thunderbird, 79 firebird, 87 Toyota truck and L88 Sanger flat bottom boat. As I am in college and won’t be able to stay here forever I am savoring every day of it, getting to take a break from working on homework and dive into a project right away right outside my bedroom is so amazing and helpful for productivity. When I’m older and moved out of here I definitely want to keep living in places like this so I’m planning on buying property and starting from scratch with my home and very spacious garage. Best of luck to you and your family with your new home.

I sympathize with this problem. I ended up building a new house with a four car garage for the most frequently used cars and a seperate six to eight car workshop for the project cars down the back. My commute went from 35km to 70km, but the commute time is the same as it's mostly open freeway, not clogged suburban arterial roads.

Ended up finding our house with a large 2 car garage with storage space on the side for trailers. Ima be honesy here. I found this channel a few months back by the youtube algorithm by watching a few car videos and needless to say i dont regret anyting. The rabbit has that sweet voice that catches your attention no matter what. Ed has that trusting voice that noy only draws you in but makes you want more not to mention the occasion pictures that you see which makes the story even better. The best thing about this channel i rarely see? Not asking for subscribers, just letting everyone just subscribe on their own will just because they want to hear more. The ads on this channel are also great but unfortunately being a broke college student i cant afford any of them and sometimes being in California cant go to any of them 😂😂😂. Other than that i sincerely hope this channel be on youtube trending at some point since this is one of the most underrated channels i have ever watched. (As in literally nothing else i watch can top this channel. Sure there are some gamer youtubers and occasional streamers but watching this feels like im a kid a gain while a parent, grandparent or even a stranger asking you to sit down and listen to their life story.)

I had the same challenge looking for a garage. Finally found a 3 bay that is oversized compared to standard size garage at 1000ish sqft and the house is good to. It was empty when I moved in and of course it's full now! I live in the country so I have enough space to build which I've been looking at recently. Like the outdoor kitchen, sweet!

Over 20 years ago I was working in what was called a CAD sweatshop(they created building construction plans). We were doing a series of drawings of model homes for a builder, one of the homes really stood out. It had the typical 2 car garage with the option to go up to a six car garage. The house wasn't anything special, not very large. Perfect for a car guy.

I had to go the other way, buy enough property and build a 2,400 sq ft garage. All the 'attached' type structures we were finding in SFL were a joke.
@kern4175 жыл бұрын
We were pretty lucky. First house was a 2 car garage with separate garage doors. 2nd house was a 3 car garage. Both had extensions in front of one space for additional storage (read: tools and spare parts). I'm not sure I can consider anything else an "upgrade" without separated garage spaces after being spoiled like this.

I had the exact same issues as you living in Roswell north of Atlanta the two biggest challenges were finding a house with enough garage space for 4 cars plus a workshop and a driveway flat enough to get the cars in and out. We almost lost hope then a buddy recommended a good realtor (Brent McSpadden) he’s not your average realtor and had worked with car guys before. Didn’t even think it was weird that I followed him round in a ridiculously low Porsche to see if it would clear driveways. We worked out a pretty good system to get out of viewings quickly, if my car wouldn’t go up the driveway he knew I wouldn’t even bother viewing the place and he would just drive onto the next listing.

We just moved into our current house two years ago, simple rambler, but it has a MASSIVE garage. Thing has a large work bench, storage cabinets lining the walls, huge heater and even still we can fit 4 cars, all our yard stuff (riding lawn mowers and what have you), tires, tool cabinet, parts. Turns out one of the previous owners ran an auto repair business at home and put this garage in to work out of. Floor still has the plates and holes where the car lift was located. Best of all, no HOA!

Tracy Thompson if you haven't already, try looking around the downtown area for small warehouses. Some have areas that you can convert to a living space with minimal effort. And 'accidentally' forget about that whole "asking permission" thing, lol!
@mattizie915 жыл бұрын
That's crazy. No one ever made an apartment in a big shop! That fold-out happened to be the only couch I have; the large water heater is because we have so many customers that wash their hands that the hot water runs out; the kitchen is actually a "kitchenette" to whip up a quick roast while on break; and there's nothing wrong with having a TV in my office. No, of course I don't actually live there. I only go there for work.
@trcythmpsn5 жыл бұрын
The issue about not asking is commercial properties are inspected for code and if they see someone living in there you'll not only get in trouble but you will have to get another place to live. I didn't want to risk paying for two places. But...but.... I found a place this week that's perfect. 1 bed 1 bath long 1 car garage that could fit a 2 post lift and washer dryer. 750 a month and it's 1.5 miles from my work. I move in next month.

I have a few neighbors and friends with decent sized car collections and what they usually do is just buy another property to put their cars at. One of my father's friends has a huge house on the lake and a 30 plus car collection so he bought the land across from his house that wasn't on the water and build a huge garage there. A car dealer here in town has a garage on his house that has doors on the front and on one side so it opens up to a huge space that can hold like 10 cars and then another separate garage across that can hold another 8, his dad's house has a complete underground garage with dozens of cars and then huge pole barns with another 100 cars or so. If you have a plane the hanger is another place to keep some cars. One neighbor has the space under the garage open and a lift in the garage where you can lower the cars into the basement garage. I'd suggest keeping certain cars offsite because one colleague had a nice collection and one of them caught on fire in the garage and took out all the cars and the house too, that sucked.

Ed, I feel your plight! I bit the bullet and created my own home on Cape Cod to accommodate my hobby with the first floor being 30'x60' and the 2nd floor being 30'x50'. Cape Cod homes with 3 car garages are north of $550K, way out of our budget! I made some money off the last home I lived in- used that as down payment and bought land and starting building a stick first floor with a modular 2nd floor, and for less than 50% of pre-existing structures and current full stick build on the Cape! All I want to do is restore classic Cadillacs and have some space to actually do some work and enjoy my hobby, but like you said it's incredibly difficult to find the space and a way to make it financially feasible. I think I found the right way! If you ever need a place to stay and cover your car give me a holler!

I bet I could come to Vin Wiki and do a video on this subject, I am Glad I am not the only one. This story is SOOOO TRUE! We searched for 2 years for the right house. We looked at so many houses that the Realtor lost money. We finally found a house with a yard big enough to build a garage in Taylors SC, Rabbit's Neck of the woods! I rent an industrial warehouse for all of my stuff and cars. Fast forward 2 more yrs. of living with the mother in law, popping out 2 more kids, arguing with a pesky neighbor, having him call the County Inspector to shut me down, having a contractor run off with my deposit for the building Etc., Etc. we are finally in!!!! The house is renovated and my building is up!!!! this is just the beginning of getting settled in my new shop.

Great Video! We feel your pain, we were always looking for a 8 car garage and when the economy tanked several years ago one came up with an over sized 4 car up top then drive around back to a 3500 sqft drive in basement and another 1500 sqft dirty working garage under the veranda. Our dilemma was it is just my wife and myself and to get that much garage space we had to buy a 7000 sqft house. Now we basically shut down half of the house and mostly hang out in our basement car cave that typically holds 4 to 6 cars in our living/museum setting. The good news is it is the perfect situation to run our collector and exotic car insurance business FullOctaneInsurance.com out of, our clients come and enjoy visiting our collection and projects. Just yesterday we hosted a bringatrailer viewing party for 25 people. Now we have been thinking about downsizing living space and increasing garage on a few acres with a car facility on the property but land in the Nashville area has become so expensive it may make sense to just stay where we are. Curt
