The limitation for me has always seemed to be maximum pressure that it will seal. Most narrow(25/28mm) tires simply lack the structure to properly seal medium size holes when used at higher pressures. We're always given the line that "tubeless systems allow for lower pressures", but the part missed is that tire pressure is simply a mechanism to support the mass of the bike+rider system. There's a lower limit that can be tolerated for handling and performance reasons. The other aspect that can be daunting for recreational or casual riders, is the maintenance required to retain the sealing action. It's a lot of marketing to sell a product that may work in many cases, but isn't the cure-all that it's often perceived as. Hopefully we'll see things unify and the issues fade away.

On the other hand, by using it in tyre sealant it just eventually ends up in the oceans no? Whether down the sink or down the gutter it goes into the water cycle. If it gets filtered, my guess is it just ends up in landfill again. Nevertheless that’s no better or worse than all the particles in other sealants.

The best sealant I've used is Stans Race Sealant. This also must be poured into the tyre because it will seal the valve hole. The issue with this sealant is that the tyre has to be removed to top up the sealant. Silca have removed this issue by providing a top up fluid. The other issue with Stans Race Sealant is that it comes in large bottles and half is wasted because it dries out before it can be used. Silca take note.

@RollinRat thanks for such a detailed response, really helped to put things into perspective and manage my expectations! I suffered 7 punctures on my new gp5000 clinchers during my race (mechanics can't determine where was the system repeatedly compromised, rim tape was ok, nothing stucked in tyre etc) and in fact it's running fine 3 months since the race. This experience forced me to take a look at tubeless setups for road, which brought me here 😂😂 Noted on the orange seal regular recommendation, any thoughts about Silca's wonder sealant? seems to attract extremely polarising reviews! 🥶

@RollinRat 🤣🤣 appreciate the brutal upfront truth, i have my clinchers on standby with latex tubes (maybe i'll experiment putting sealant in them). Just take some pet hair or beard trimmings and chop it up into 1-2 cm bits and throw it in the tire with your sealant. It travels with the sealant and helps clog holes. Biodegradable, cheap... it clogs your plumbing pipes, it'll clog tire holes.

I recently replaced my Stans-filled rear MTB tyre due to tread-wear and the old tyre had 17 massive 1-2" thorns sticking into it, from the last couple of years. Sealant lets you ride, saving hours of tube-replacing maintenance! I am currently trying Vittoria sealant and have moved away from FinishLine on my gravel bike, as that gels over time and does not flow to a hole. Latex sealant forms the equivalent of a latex innertube, as it dries over time. Wheel rimtape needs to be replaced every 2-3 years, as air loss will eventually occur through the spokes & nipples. If I had to use tubes again, I would go for slime-filled, based on good experience on holiday bikes over Greek thorn bushes.

You mentioned running tubulars with sealant, may I ask what you tend to use? I've been using Stans no tubes and have had varying results with different tubulars. That being said, I've put the sealant into the tubular from the beginning, not a patch method like you describe. Personally I'd like to use the patch method because I've noticed that after adding the sealant it doesn't seem to spin as long (I'm suspecting an internal rolling resistance). However, I have also seen a benefit of having the sealant in the tubular from the beginning. I had a puncture while riding, had sealant spray a small stream all over the place and it patched it while ridding, no need to stop.

I wonder how hard it would be to put in a tube at point of manufacturing like ' Slime tubes ' . Like you say a 2 part system, dry carbon blown in then the liquid? I'd pay a premium for that over a standard tube.

Tubeless tyres on autos relies on the power of the bead and the thickness of the tyre itself. Mavic, as you stated, tried this. Their tyres were way heavy. Would never be used in racing. For the daily commuter, this wouldn't and shouldn't be a concern. For the racer, they could use tubular or tubed tires...

Exactly. I used the Hutchinson UST road tires quite a bit with Shimano rims. It worked really well. Those tires had a carbon fibre bead which would not stretch. Those tires weighed more than a regular tire by itself but not that much more than a regular tire and tube.

I use Vittoria tire sealant. I got a 6-7mm hole in my tire and the sealant did the job. I did have to clean sealant off the rim and frame but that was done after my ride. Vittoria can be injected through the valve stem. The Pirelli tires I use make adding sealant before they seat to the rim a deal breaker for me.

I can't believe the Silca KZbin Ad. They say they have scientists and chemist on staff, yeah right. Those professionals don't come cheap so how are you paying them. Silca is a well known brand but I doubt they have the budget for that kind of expertise. I believe if scientists and chemist did get involved to produce a product that would actually work I don't think we would be watching this video right now and possibly tubes would be a thing of the past. Honestly, when I have a flat, installing a new tube is not a big deal, not at all. Why do they have to keep pushing tubeless on us?

Bullshit, can't sell enough sealant to offset the costs of separating carbon fibres from resin. Chopping it up as is, without separating it, very doable. I've been mtb'ing with tubeless tyres for years, common knowledge if you have a hard to seal puncture, you can literally use dirt mixed with sealant to plug it. Works every time. I assume Poertner realised that, but knows he can only sell race stuff to mamils, we know mamils love carbon. Ground carbon weighs less than sand, volumetrically.
