Student biryani is phenomenal in the right locations, especially in Balochistan. Maybe the humungous population of the bigger cities like Karachi and Lahore caused them to go for quantity over quality, but it's still one of the best everywhere else

Unfortunately in Karachi saddar branch which is the oldest one its niether quality nor quantity. They simply don't care anymore. Furthermore the waiters always try to scam money by adding things to the bill you didn't order like raita or water bottle. I have personally experienced this more than once. When you callout on them they shrug it off like it's nothing

In Karachi imo it's the best tasting biryani in the city if you go to the right branch, even its probably closest competitor Allah wala biryani doesn't have a flavour like student biryani. My family has ordered 1.5kg buckets of biryani multiple times when there wasn't food in the house and it always tasted amazing, although nowadays they've reduced the amount of chicken pieces they give you in the bucket. One thing I'd like to mention is the bucket is actually not much different in price when making it at home so it can be quite affordable for outings as well

As an Indian, the best biryani I had was in Lahore. 2 places spring to mind Waqas Biryani House on Feroz Deen Centre Hall Rd and Master. Biryani House on Mall Rd. Opposite Waqas is Bannu beef pulao house which is also very nice. Waqas is more like street food style whereas Masters is more sit down restaurant, really well presented, and a huge variety. Near Masters is Panjab Ice Cream which is the perfect desert after a good heart biryani, it's soooo good. I think even though Lucknow biryani and Hyderabad biriyani are really good, Lahore biryani was the best I've ever had.

As an Indian Sindhi, we definitely do follow the practice of adding potatoes in our Biryani as somewhat different to other South Asian cultures. So I’m sure it would be quite common in Karachi.

As a Sri Lankan I want to ask fellow South Asians; Is it a crime to serve biriyani where in most places it is mushy rice cooked with curry powder and turmeric and dried raisins, peanuts and peas. Topped with a piece of unseasoned meat deep fried so much that you can't even chew it well. On top of that we even think it's the same as Indian/Pakistani biriyani but calls it buriyani. And no such thing as dahi to complement just a very stale watery gravy make by boiling ginger,onions, black pepper and curry powder.

Try AL Rehman Biryani in Karachi Kharadar Once you enter Kharadar you will smell some good Biryani from there I literally had it 2 or 3 days ago Its my fav spot for biryani (REMEMBER TO ASK A LOCAL IN KHARADAR WHERE THE OG AL REHMAN BIRYANI IS CUZ THEY ARE MANY COPIES OF IT ASWELL).

I have tried most probably every famous biryani spot in karachi until I found out about Jeddah Biryani through Gully. I went there right away Let me tell you its one of the best biryani I have tried so far. It's totally up there in the Top 5.

Biryani is rarely cooked at home over here, in fact I can’t remember the last time I had it. We usually cook Palow. Biryani does look nice, however like most things it’s best prepared at home.

A few months back, I went to a restaurant they had a board in which it was written "special biriyani only for today". I ordered it and it was the worst biriyani I've ever had in my life and I can bet that it is the worst biriyani in the whole world. I think you should try it.

for me biryani is a personal taste kinda food for every spot yk? im not a fan of student biryani because they don't really do it for me but id eat it if i want THAT taste in biryani specifically. i think im just used to biryani tasting different from different spots since ive lived here all my life and had it from all kinds of places growing up. i do enjoy biryani from rajput a lot (though others might not fancy it and since the spot has their good days and bad days, i cant really guarantee much)

In pakistan ,a hotspot is copied very quickly like CHACHA BURGER ,almashoor chacha burger,asli chacha burger,puranay waly chacha burger,kadoosi chacha burger,wah chachca burger .... So many new copycats that orignal shop is faded for new people who visits a location by hearing about chacha burger and goes into a wrong shop... Such people bring lot of bad image to orignal people. Maybe that occured in ur case or maybe not....but u can be cautious if searching of spot listened by someone.
