Thanks for your continuous engagement showing/teaching us interesting topics. Right now I'm using OMV on three amd64 systems and am very satisfied with them. A couple of days ago I shortly thought about deploying a TrueNAS SCALE host as a dedicated Docker host, but as SCALE relies on Kubernetis I dropped that idea. Nonetheless I'm looking forward to future content regarding TrueNAS SCALE.

Hi Jeff, greetings from Geneva, Switzerland, you taught me how to work with OMV and I only use OMV because it's very simple, I'm going to try this TrueNas and then I'll comment again, good job and keep making the videos because they help a lot of people💯💯👍👍

I have only used OMV for the most part. Tried CasaOS, not terribly thrilled with that. I've considered TrueNas and ProxMox as other choices for a NAS setup, but with the limited amounts of time I have during a day to do IT for my home and trying to setup something for my veterinary clinic, they seem a bit more involved to setup and maintain. So far, OMV has been fine, even with the recent changes and interface issues they had. That has been ironed out well enough to make it functional again.

Having used both (more core than scale) OMV is the simpler and easier to use (kind of like unraid) where Truenas UI is a bit more clunky and you have to understand what you are doing to get the most out of it. I have a background in IT and kind of have a thing for storage so I kind of love truenas as it made a lot of people aware of ZZFS but at the same time totally understand that a lot of people just want something simple and easy. The great thing is there are pretty good options for a range of wants/needs now a days, find what works best for you!

Thank you Jeff for all your vids and actually introducing the omv to me. But btrfs almost near miss lost all of my data. Which made me switch to truenas. And I remember it was all so foreign and unusual compared to omv. But now, I never looked back . It just works. Glad to see you trying it.

Thanks. I tried both TrueNas but failed to properly use Docker images especially with Kubernetis. I came back to OMV 7.0 and the new compose process to run docker images works so far well.

Thanks Techno Dad Life thanks for this...been following your videos for years via OMV...Like I wrote yesterday on OMV there are lot out there that give OMV bad press and not one of them comments on the huge company behind TrueNAS....and as votdev points out it is essentially him and one other that develop OMV...which as ryecoaaron is aimed at the home user.....I love OMV and have done for years and as a small company it ticks all the boxes. Keep up the good work!

The UI seems better on TrueNas but OMV isn't resource heavy. You can also run any docker container through portainer

TrueNAS Scale, being debian based, runs containers out of the box.

OMV user, I was looking forward to Scale, but watched a lot of videos and if you want a JBOD system and use docker OMV wins every time. I prefer using compose.yml files rather than the true charts thing. Also is seems Scale docker is kubernetes and seems to break on updates, plus there is a plugin now for k8s on OMV. You can also run lxc and vms on OMV, with the KVM plugin. I'll be sticking with OMV for the time being.
@AvWijk8510 ай бұрын
I actually stepped away from OMV, because as soon as I ran updates the installation broke. Updates took forever or didnt work via the UI, updating via the commandline broke the installation. Also, whats the whole deal with OMV extras? Should be standard part of the installation..
@try-that10 ай бұрын
@@AvWijk85 Fair enough, but I've just upgraded my system to OMV 7, and it all seems to have gone well. I agree with the omv-extras, I think it should be a clickable install, not everyone needs all the plugins, but it is nice that you can chose what plugins you want. Of course there are things I don't like, but not many. I also think the forums are pretty good as well. What are you running now then? I think some basic homelabers might give CasaOS a go, but it will be OMV for me, for quite some time.

I agree about the extras.

I found the initial video intro a bit confusing as to what was going to be compared. Truenas Core is based on FreeBSD, is very mature, and geared towards enterprise use as a stable platform. Truenas Scale is based on Debian, is newer, more compatible with hardware, and is where the ongoing development is taking place. Scale is not as mature or bug free as Core is. The two versions have similar features but are not identical in operation. Selecting either OMV, Truenas Scale, or Core is more of a preference and what the end use case is. I like both OMV and Truenas but use Truenas in our business.
@bigshel9910 ай бұрын
As a pure NAS/storage server... TrueNAS is my choice by far. The ZFS, disk, and overall storage management features, like snapshots, are more straightforward to me. If I'm looking for an application server that also can do storage, OMV (or Unraid if I'm willing to pay).
@TechnoDadLife10 ай бұрын
Yep, it depends on how you use your storage.
@jonathanloaiza6 ай бұрын
Hello Techno dad, this is the video I was waiting for. I use OMV and I have my whole setup with Dockers and several disks for data storage. Although TrueNas has better looking UI Kubernetis seems a little buggy for me, also it only uses ZFS format so it doesn't support other formats even for read. I'll wait for @technodadlife to launch a more in depht video for OMV users switching. Keep the good work, cheers 🙌

Low end is definitely OMV. Truenas uses lots of resources.

So does it wan you to erase all discs or only the one where the OS is installed on? It‘d be completely counter-productive if one couldn’t mount discs with data if e.g. you migrate to TrueNas from OMV or somewhere else.

I used omv for 5 years, i switched to Scale 1 year ago. I don't like it. The containers suck, they fail to update always and if its not in the store its super complicated to set up. It also is a pain in the ass to setup smb and ftp on the same user.
