Great video! The reason why some stations look so different from each other is that they used to just go from "Rondo Daszyńskiego" to "Dworzec Wileński," and the rest was built very recently, about one or two years ago, so it was a completely different idea and time. The strong neons on the stations near the city center were once perfectly fitting with the trends and style popular back when they were first built (2015). I hope this helps!

The central section from Rondo Daszyńskiego to Dworzec Wileński was built first in one batch and opened together in 2015. The outermost stations were opened later between 2019 and 2022 (there are actually three more stations planned to the west, planned opening 2026). That's why said center part has this coherent, funky design language, and the outer stations are different and kinda all over the place. The guy who designed those initial stations (Wojciech Fangor, a famous op-art and poster artist) passed away in 2015, aged 92 - so the city couldn't employ him to continue the work even if they wanted to 😞 I need to say that I personally like the neon-y design language of the couple stations west from the central section too, though. Also there's an important detail about the Stadion Narodowy station: it's the only one that have platforms serving more than two tracks, as it is supposed to be a branch station for the future M3 line and has been already built to be ready for that.

7:10 Yes, the blue color refers to the nearby swimming pool. However, the concept of the station's neon logo itself is a reference to its name and the surrounding area. "Młyn" = mill. The logo features circles like mill wheels because there used to be mills here. Furthermore, in the case of the "Płocka" station neon, the logo design is a reference to the nearby former radio factories, and the logo clearly includes pathways resembling those on a printed circuit board.

For context, that means I had travelled all the way to south-west of Warsaw, slept through technical stop all buses always made there, travelled back to the centre, then across the river and all the way to north-eastern part of the city and woke up at technical stop at Zacisze. At the time Wileński was the eastern terminal and the extension was still being built. I absolutely love Poland, Warsaw, and where I lived in Praga North, and I would come back in a heartbeat. Above the station is a not too large mall, Galeria Wileńska, connected to the suburban rail station, with a Starbucks and a Carrefour, which was my favorite place to get groceries. Unfortunately the mall seemed to have closed local businesses, but it didn't seem desolate while I was there. I also agree with you that while Warsaw seems to be sprawling, it's still entirely walkable and bikeable anywhere you go - they didn't forget pedestrians, and I often walked everywhere, even when I could have taken the metro or the tram! 🙂

There are fantastic ethnic neighborhoods, like Arthur Ave Little Italy in the Bronx, a South Asian neighborhood in Jackson Heights, Queens, various Chinatowns in Queens(Flushing) and Brooklyn, a trip to famous Coney Island on the subway. Even Staten Island has a one line train line that's technically not the subway, but is included on the subway map. Visit museums and parks and sports venues outside of touristy Manhattan. You may also want to explore the "other" subway, the PATH trains that go between Manhattan and New Jersey. If you also cover transportation modes other than the subway, I would check out our commuter railroads, Metro-North and the LIRR/Long Island Rail Road, the Roosevelt Island Tram (a cable car), the NYC Ferry (some routes go quite far!), and the Staten Island Ferry, which is free. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! 🙂

There's actually a bunch more "twins" to the Palace of Culture and Science. The Soviets had a thing for this style of buildings and you can find them dotted around former USSR countries in various sizes, that's why there's a very similar building in the middle of Riga. They all came from the Seven Sisters in Moscow, which is a group of 7 skyscrapers built in the 40s and 50s in various places in Moscow all in the same style, with sister buildings being built shortly after in major USSR cities such as Warsaw, Riga or Prague (among others). You know, fun fact is that the Palace of Culture and science is actually eerily similar to a project by a Polish architect from 1930s. It was called the Independence Tower, was inspired by the American skyscrapers and was supposed to commemorate the regaining of independence. Of course then the war happened and the project wasn't realized. Stalin's sisters were built a few decades later.

Fair point, I do wish I’d included more in both videos in those sections you mentioned but that wasn’t really deliberate “leave out” either time. I am gonna try and improve future videos based on constructive comments though 😎 Nowy Świat did get credited for its purple UFO-ness 🛸 in this vid. 😝 It’s more that the malls were something to show at the beginning station or two on each line. Beginning of videos are really important on KZbin & the end of metro lines naturally tend to have less to see. If you start the video like “here’s the first station…nothing here”…”also at the second station…nothing here”…viewers won’t even get to the middle of the video 🤣🤪 By the time I’m in the middle of the line it’s a question of making sure I can get the whole line finished to make a logical video. It takes a lot longer to do in real time than it looks in a 20 min edited video😀 M1 - I thought swerving slightly off the line to show the Old Town was a better use of time and more interesting to potential Warsaw visitors than Politechnika 🤭 but I guess there’s a couple of cool things there? In Warsaw we're used to calling lines by their numbers, and when we use colours, it's for something else (namely to differentiate between regular and express buses). But using colours is fine, it's not like I wouldn't know what you mean. In my case I like the "bland" stations in Targówek best, I guess because I just like muted patterns. The ones near the west end are a close second, though. If you'dre curious how these designs hold up over time, you can take a look at M1, which was opened in the 90s. The city takes good care of the metro infrastructure, because it's the city's prestige investment. When local elections are coming up and the local government is trying to get re-elected, they always put up a lot of ads about how the metro is great and keeps growing. So, you know, they need to keep it shiny. ;-) I don't vote for them but at least I can agree about this one thing. As for the traffic, both ends of M2 are densely populated. These areas are sometimes called "sleeping districts" because you don't have many reasons to go there unless you or your friends live there. Which means traffic depends on the time of day, since it's mainly people commuting between work and home. By the way, it's always nice to see someone take a look at the metro in Warsaw and not hate it. Compared to other cities, our public transport is just plain average. It's there for you when you need it, it's affordable, and it gets the job done, so people kind of take it for granted, and only notice when something breaks (which it does, because come on). Also, good job with the pronunciation. Your "Księcia Janusza" is better than my "Worcestershire".
@n1ckburt0nАй бұрын
@@jacekwesoowski1484 Wow 🤩 such a detailed comment, thanks! 😎 Yeh I read the colours are also more syllables in Polish so it’s less “snappy” to say. I was a bit bemused how a few people couldn’t make the colour connections, considering all the station signs and line maps are blue on M1 and red on M2 🤭😝 sometimes there’s a small % of viewers who just want to find something to correct though I think ☑️ I can see your point about the “bland” stations definitely 🚇 they’re probably classier in a way & could stand the test of time better. It’s good that the city makes a solid effort to keep it all shiny ✨ though! I’m really excited to see what they do with the new stations/lines. Yeh I think the Warsaw metro is amazing tbh. I like the contrast between the two lines & also M2 has so many memorable stations. Particularly to make a video about, some lines in other cities can be difficult cos there just isn’t much of interest you can say about the designs. Haha 🤣 yeh “Worcestershire” is a very tricky one. I got mixed reviews for my pronunciations, which is fine, but I did try my best with them 😎…again, I think a small % of viewers just watch KZbin as if they’re a teacher grading your homework 🤣🫢 and they get a buzz from correcting something 😋 Really enjoyed reading your comment, lots to unpack! 🚇🤓

I was interested in public transport, especially metro, so here is some things about the metro stations The metro line was opened in 2015 - the first section was from "Dworzec Wileński" to "Rondo Daszyńskiego" From both sides they were extended to "Trocka" and "Księcia Janusza" The final extension was to "Bródno" and "Bemowo" with bemowo being the most recent one There are 2 stations being made being from the west side after bemowo The stations were made by different companies and in a different time period so that may explain why the stations are so funky Also, at 14:22 you can see a platform made for M3 16:03: When I saw the tilte of the video, I thought of "Zacisze", its the only station that is surrounded by houses and a quiet area. Its the reason why not many people enter and exit at this station. Zacisze is also next to a forest.

I've been on this subway when it opened in the mid 90s. I've been on many subways (Beijing, Budapest, Tokyo, Daegu, Busan. Seoul, Paris, New York, Toronto, Montreal, LA, Hong Kong, Moscow, probably more) and yeah, while Warsaw is where I was born, there's nothing spectacular about this subway - it's clean, works well, is affordable. The one I remember the most is Beijing, for being chaotic, and the first line in Budapest, it was like 50 cm underground and the cart was very archaic.

@@n1ckburt0n I was only on it once or twice - I lived in Daegu and so most of my experience is on that system - I left just before they built the monorail system (albeit I have been on it since) - I remember Seoul being orderly, and they have the secondary "anti-suicide" doors on most of the stations now. They all looked the same to me, but they were clean and orderly, as well as affordable (like Warsaw!)

@@n1ckburt0n I lived in the boonies between Waegwan and Daegu - I bought a car 2 weeks into my stint there, there was absolutely no viable mass transit (45 min walk to a bus that comes three times a day, when it wants to) - I actually still have that same car in 2025 (well, 2024, but whatevs) as I brought it back with me. Eventually I moved into the city proper, so the car was only used to go see my girlfriend in the next city over.

I think you missed Rondo ONZ station? Overall you are doing a great job with the pronounciation! I only couldn't help myself but giggle at the Świętokrzyska, it came out like Świętokryśka, which made "saint cross' " more into "saint sturdy christine's". "rz" is a tricky one, in polish if those two are bundled they create another sound alike English "sh"
@n1ckburt0n29 күн бұрын
@@duniabarecka7404 Thanks very much 🤩 Rondo ONZ is in there briefly, with the white walls & bold lettering, big roundabout above it 🥸 Haha I think I pronounced Świętokrzyska better in the M1 video 🤭 rolling the “r” sound is often good with foreign languages but not in this particular case lol it is also kinda difficult to remember the Polish word and then narrate smoothly in English 😝 usually one or the other gets a little messed up 🤪
@duniabarecka740429 күн бұрын
@n1ckburt0n It gets a little firsky 😂 for r though, I think it's the only pronounciation exception (the only I can think of). General guideline is whenever there is anything atypical around "z", like a consonant in front of it, it's time to get suspicious. sz - literal "sh", rz - harder "sh" closer to g from george, ż - g from george... It's the z who is the little prankster

Zacisze is the least crowded metro station in Warsaw. In fact, it's placed in the middle of the small estate of single-family houses. It's placed because the metro line goes under that area to arrive at stations Kondratowicza and Bródno, which are placed in the densily populated "Bródno" area. So that would be pointless to build the metro line under the Zacisze area, but without at least the small station.
@n1ckburt0nАй бұрын
@@prk2543 Yeh it does make sense to at least put a small station there on the way 🚇 kinda wish I’d gone above ground at Zacisze now to see the difference between that and the Bródno area 🥸
@jakubfabisiak9810Ай бұрын
@@n1ckburt0n for such a quiet neighbourhood, Zacisze is pretty spoiled with public transport. There's a train line running from Dworzec Wileński to the nearby towns, and when a developer built condos on the other side of it, they had a train station put in as well (thanks to that, I can walk 8 minutes from my home to the station, take a train which takes 4 minutes to get to the terminus, as it's the next-to-last station on the line, and a 5-minute walk to get to work). Between that, the bicycle paths, it's really easy to get "to the city" from Zacisze, and just a couple minute drive to a big shopping center.
