The quick answer to all this is: No. More in the video about the big "BUT" #webtoons #comics #reaction #webcomics #webtooncanvas

we are gonna see nsfw now ?

It's still not allowed. But creators will put labels for their series, that will help for people to see if a series is more for grown ups, and children should no longer be able to see series that are not for them (provided they entered their real age for their profile on the webtoons app :))

@@ndbern42 that will be no convenient, I saw how many creators uses their patreon account to show nfsw content, and is a good business, they generate a lot of money, if webtoon do this, it will end those creator's business 😰 oh god, nooo !!

I think the age rating system is going to be an improvement. They at least have some stated guidelines about what’s appropriate for each group. I would much rather rate my series myself knowing what’s in it than let someone at webtoon do it. I feel like before, some moderators on canvas were trying to make sure all series were “ok for all ages” and other moderators were trying to make sure series were “16+”, so enforcement was all over the place. Now we at least have some more guidelines. And maybe if a creator steps over a line, their age rating will just be increased instead of the whole episode being removed. As far a nudity confusion, I think the statement that mature comics may contain nudity is an outward facing statement. It’s for the readers not the creators. Because webtoon the company can’t guarantee that there is no nudity (because they can’t police every canvas series) the outward facing statement about nudity is to cover their butts. They’re still telling creators that it’s not allowed because it’s not. But they can’t guarantee to the reader that it won’t be there.

That makes a lot of sense. I agree, anything is better than the way it is now. and this allows us at least some narrowing down to a target group. Thanks for your elaborate take!

@@ndbern42 I’m actually pretty pleased about it. We’ll see how it’s implemented, but I was always a little nervous that little kids would read my comic. Not that it has anything super bad, but I went back and forth on profanity for example. Sometimes I censored it and sometimes I didn’t. Now I’ll just give myself a 13 or 16 plus rating and not worry about it. So if an 8 year old sees a bad word in my comic, it’s their fault for lying not mine.

This seems completely accurate. Smart Jess, being smart again.

I looked into the new rating system and no you don't actually rate it yourself sadly. You answer a set of 5 or 6 questions and then webtoon decides the rating for your comic based on your answers and if something changes in your comic you have to reanswer those questions and wait for approval and the new rating. And if you don't go through this process at all your comic will end up with the unrated tag which means it'll basically be delisted. Also if they decide the rating they gave you doesn't match the content of your comic they'll freeze your comic until you reapply for a rating. Honestly the way this rating system is being handled is a mess and I bet a ton of crappy comics are going to continue to skate by under the radar regardless. Unless they have an algorithm go through all the canvas comics but given how bad false flagging is if they implement that it'll be a nightmare.

Ive been wanting to make a webcomic for some time. I love the scrolling format but really had no place to use it as I prefer more adult themes and stories. Like game of thrones for example... but always felt there was no space for it on Webtoon

Ngl half of webtoon canvas are thirst traps anyways. They should add it since they can't even moderate it.

I think this is a good move! I certainly have been curious about where the line is on violence and profanity in the past, and as someone who occasionally likes to draw a certain amount of sickening violence, this can open up some latitude. Unfortunately, if you give certain creators an inch when it comes to nudity, they will take a long and horny mile almost immediately. Twitch had to deal with that a while ago when they allowed "artistic nudity," for a very hot minute. A SideNote; anyone who grew up in the 80's can tell you that US ratings systems used to be far more permissive when it came to language and nudity. Not unusual to have hard language and bare bosoms in content that was rated family friendly. We had a whole moral panic in the 90's about exposing the youth to sensitive content and things have gotten more restrictive since.

Haha, well said, I didn't know about that hot minute at twitch but I certainly can imagine what people did with that. Phew, so glad they stopped exposing the youth to sensitive content, god forbid we walked off too far from the modesty of victorian ages! I'm sure Europe will give in a little bit, at some point, and yet I can't see UK-non royals getting rid of that potty mouth on TV, any time soon 😂

I mean I would say this is a necessary distribution of labour. If everything is on the company, then it means there's going to be more chances of mistakes. If creators have the option to properly categorise their own comic though, it means things will be sent to the right places faster and more efficiently. Webtoon will still have to do checks, but it'll be an overall more streamlined experience. Hopefully.

From what I understand if an app wants to contain r18 content and still host their app on the appstore the entire app has to be rated 17+ Since probably the majority of webtoon users are underage I don't think they'd ever want to do that Also idk how much webtoon income comes from ads but if you make your site/app r18 your ad revenue will go down a lot since most companies dont want to be associated with that stuff which is why the majority of r18 sites like for example onlyfans make their money from users directly

Oh, good to know! then I guess it will just be a feeble attempt to regulate Canvas... Unless they just launch an "Only Fans Toons" 😎

In beginning when you said you were not aware that Originals went through this already, I was aware because I follow a lot of original creators on social media who were very stressed out about having to remove a bunch of profanity from their comic in order to not be rated MATURE and therefore lose some of their reader base.

Awesome video as always burn! I’m definitely gonna do some research and make a video covering this topic as well. Very interesting seeing all these changes with webtoon.

In the webtoon app, at least on android idk if it looks different on apple: click on a series' page, click the white "i" icon, there's a black bar at the top with a message saying what rating the series is. Idk how it looks on desktop.

Thanks for pointing this out! I have tried it on my phone, yet there is no such indication. I'm guessing that my App store will only let me download the German, localized version of the app (on which I change language and then am able to read the content on the English platform, too) Or is anyone else with iOS not able to see that age rating?

huh? I didn't get this email?? thanks for talking about this or else I wouldn't have even known I was forced to put the mature label on my comic ages ago because of profanity, so at least this should make it clear what gave me that label...
@ndbern425 ай бұрын
I think they send their emails in batches, I seem to have received mine quite early on! Oh, you were notified to set yours to mature? then hopefully you can give it a mild profanity rating now!

I do wonder if the whole Action section will be rated Mature. On the other note it's a little bit funny that there are 30 days in September, so it's not a valid date.
@ndbern425 ай бұрын
LOL! true! So we'll have forever to fill the form after Sept 30 ;) I hope not that a little bit of Action will be rated Mature. I don't know which score will be necessary to reach a "mature" rating, but I hope it's high enough...

Honestly, I hope this means that canvas creators will be able to be as sexual as originals without worry. This will also stop people for saying that webtoon is onky for kids even though there have been 18+ and mature warnings.
@Kaileighblue5 ай бұрын
They are not changing any of the rules for what they allow. You are just allowed to rate what they already allowed. This is to censor things in the sliver of psuedo-nsfw they do allow. The Mature comics will not show up for people that say they are under 18. Some people say it will not show up in popular ratings too, I don't know if that's true. The Originals ratings are around the summary. It says "This series is rated All ages, Teen, Young Adult, or Mature." It kinda sounds to me like they might have people checking this time instead of the voluntary tag it was before. You also have to tag your comic as mature if you Mention your Adult patreon in it. Like if you say "Go to patreon for the spicy stuff" that makes your comic Mature. So if it's true that Mature comics don't show up in the top 30 ratings that would wipe out all those patreon bait comics.
