Once they reach a certain level of intelligence and tool use I would assume that all sapient species would become the apex predators of their planets.

But there's a difference between bending the environment to your will as a society, and just monching on anything that moves because you can. There's being at the top of the food chain, and then there's being a hypercarnivorous macropredator.
@ts256792 ай бұрын
@@impishDullahan I'd hardly describe myself as an apex predator by your definition; should we disqualify homo sapience sapience from the top spot now the vast majority of our population isn't directly engaged in hunting for sustenance? @@ts25679 Elephants change their enviornments, are incredibly social and capable of tool use, had they evolved a little differently we might not have been the dominant species on the earth. They are herbivores, they'd not necessarily have turned omnivorous if they'd had that outcome. But they could cause extinctions, so I wonder if in our position that'd count as a kind of predatory evironmentally? That's a question to be gnawed at.

Humans are absolutely Apex predators. As a species, we have some of the best endurance including water retention and heat management. Only like 3 animal species have better long distance endurance than we do. We can throw better than any animal that has ever existed, even just with rocks before getting to spear technology, that's a huge advantage. All that is before even getting to any major technological or cultural advancements. With even just a spear and a little clothing, humans can out compete almost any land predator that has ever lived. There's a reason we've long been the most populous monkeys that have ever existed.
@louisrobitaille58102 ай бұрын
@@kyleepratt Remove any technology beyond stone age and throw the average human in a forest with bears and stuff and most people won't survive a year. It's even worse in a tundra, savanah, jungle, or ocean. We are absolutely *NOT* apex predators. We don't have anything to protect us from the climate or the weather and our only means of offense or defense is our use of tools. We're fucked if we can't use tools. Edit: Btw, our population count is killing us 😂. We won't be the most populous for long at this rate 💀.

To all the people saying forward facing eyes, I am very sorry to say that eye position does not determine weather a animal is carnivorous or not. Forward facing eyes increase depth perception, which is useful for a slew of things, like climbing, jumping, and lunging. Those skills are often important to terrestrial predators, but there isn’t a direct link. Personally, I think Yoda might be more of a mesocarnivore (slightly more general). Grogu clearly demonstrates a preference for scavenging and opportunistic feeding, and gladly eats grain based products. We also never see Grogu eat something larger than him, and since he’ll never grow particularly large, that implies a limit on the size of Yoda’s preferred pray. Of course, nothing is to say that predation strategy and ecological niche might not change during the lifetime of a Yoda/Grogu. They may well start as opportunistic scavengers, and become hypercarnivorous hunters in adulthood. However, I doubt that they’d be pursuit predators; their body wouldn’t allow it. Ambush hunting seems far more likely, and fits well with their long lifespan (noted ambush predators like crocodiles can live incredibly long lifespans). Add the force and sufficient intelligence to build traps … yeah, scary little ambush predators
@eikebehrmann34932 ай бұрын
And, we primarily see Grogu devour amphibians, so that’s probably their preferred prey

There's precedent in the old Expanded Universe. The Vornskr hunted using the Force, which lead to the Ysalamiri evolving to create Force-void bubbles. So it's totally possible that Yoda's species also evolved to hunt using the Force, since one of the very few things we know about them is that every member of the species is strong in the Force. And something to consider: the only sapient species we know about in the real world are predators and omnivores, with the sole possible exception of elephants

This is one of those ideas that is funny on multiple levels. At first, because it seems positively absurd. And then you think about it, and the fact that the predator coding (binocular vision, slow to mature, slow to procreate, solitary, carnivorous, intelligent) was there all along, hiding in plain sight, is the kind of humor that cuts to a deep unseen truth.
@2dtension7062 ай бұрын
I wonder if George Lucas even tought about that
@blackshard6412 ай бұрын
Probably not *directly*. Alongside filmmaking, Lucas studied anthropology, which is why his settings (especially in the OT) feel so rich with culture and history. Yoda's coding as a predator is a side effect of him being inspired by human archetypes.

I'm pretty sure that humans have found a way to eat pretty much every animal at this point. Like as an overall species, without referencing specific dietary taboos based on culture. Why does Star Wars have all of these Fantasy genre traits, while primarily being a Sci-Fi story? I think at the time Sci-Fi was either Jules Verne-esque how the technology could actually work or it was a phycological drama about specific philosophical concepts. (I think Star Wars was based of Flash Gordon which I know absolutely nothing about except from Calvin and Hobbes referencing it). I'm not well versed enough in the history of the genre, but I think that Star Wars originally contributed to Fantasy and Sci-Fi getting mixed? I am most likely wrong. In my mind they could have made the whole thing a fantasy story on one planet but with different countries. Lord of the Rings and Avatar the Last Airbender are both fantasy stories that cover the theme of nature vs industrialization to some degree.
@stefanb65392 ай бұрын
In literature the most famous crossover authors that come to my mind would be Ursula K le Guin and Marion Zimmer-Bradley, and both their most famous works clearly predate Star Wars and their main impact would have been perfectly timed to influence George Lucas. (Although I don't see exact parallels in the world settings. It's just showing that sci-fi/fantasy crossovers were absolutely en vogue already in the 1970s in book form.) Oh, almost forgot Jack Vance, who also bloomed in the early 1970s. Paul Herbert's Dune series is perceived mostly as science fiction, but is also chock full of fantasy elements, like sword fights and individuals with miraculous powers, also early 1970s. George Lucas invention was more or less to adapt the fashionable literature trend to the movie screen and add his own flavor, the idea to cross over scifi and fantasy in world building was already very well establshed. Flash Gordon was at the time a pretty old classic, with the OG movie from 1936. There was a mock porn version named Flesh Gordon in 1974, but the relaunch of the actual Flash Gordon franchise didn't start until 1980, clearly in the wake of Star Wars' success. The trope of non-human humans predates all of these authors and pretty much goes back to Tolkien and Jules Verne themselves, with fantasy races and humanoid aliens more or less created from the same font of mythical traditions.
