If you stick with Android, it looks like recent Google pixels seems to do five years of security patches. Samsung recent Galaxy S phones starting from s20 will give five years of security patches as well. So far my experience these might be your best bet. If you go to iOS apple usually rolls out updates on average for six year. I think they are stretching to maybe seven years now. So depending how long you plan to own your phone do what’s best for you. If you are more on the tech side you can always flash newer rims to your Android phone for the latest security patches. I don’t know how it runs but there even the nexus 2013 has an unofficial android 12 rom.

TopEvt Yes, and no. Most devices that skipped some updates probably didn't even need them or patched them in another way. And major flaws in the OS are almost always covered by big manufacturers even if they skipped. Also, even if you're device doesn't have Security Patches, it's still the that easy to hack into the Android Operating System. The article and this video explains this. But if you have a not well known device that skipped like 9.7 patches, you damn well should be scared hahaha.

Remy Desrochers Actually, because of stuff like Blueborne and that Wi-Fi hack, you're still not totally safe if you just stay off of shady places. Security Patches are needed no matter if you only use the Play Store or not, but I'm not saying these devices aren't secure cause Android still isn't that easy to hack even with some flaws.

I'd also add a layer of blame onto the cell carriers who control access to these, and in the case of Verizon, flat out send the won't update to your phones. I'm the US at least, I'd blame your service provider long before I ever considered the manufacturer if you happen to know a security update.

The got bought by Lenovo, who are great at making hardware, but their software dept just doesn't exist. So you get the software your phone ships with and you'll never see another update.

That could be true, i didn't update my s7 because it's still very smooth even if i installed a lot of apps. Im worried that it might slowed down after the updates so that you'll be forced to buy a new one.

I have owned a number of handset from HTC to Google to Samsung to LG. It all depends on the manufacturer. Sometimes there could be hardware issues like LG’s poor workmanship on the LG5/V10 lines or the lack of good software development. Even some of Google flagship Pixel phones had some software issues when released in the pass. It could be advances in the tech and hardware but I find that recent phones don’t have much as an issue and the OS has matured and we now have fast CPU’s with lots of RAM at affordable prices. If you think Android is the only one that has problem even Apple has delivered some OS upgrades that mess up their phones. Sometimes with major OS update you can just wait a while before you update because those that update first will experience issues which informs the manufacture about issues and if they are good companies then they patch up those issues soon.

I am a Samsung user, but even for my computers I don't give a crap about it having the latest security updates or not, since I rarely download exe programs onto my PC whose source is not trusted. Same for my phone, so I don't give a crap about whether my phone is vulernable or not, as long as it doesn't stop me from using certain programs that I need.

Samsung doesn't sell anyone's information as far as I know, and I don't give a crap even if they do, since nothing in my computer or phone can't be seen in public, and I am also quite fearless in terms of this. Also I don't understand why Americans get so overly sensitive about personal privacy... You don't lose anything if Facebook decided to use your profile and stuff like that

Ezree Amree Hmm, eh whatever. Basically, some Android manufacturers have been skipping security updates. Don't take this at face value though because even though some are skipped, most of the major ones aren't. And you're still pretty safe since Android isn't so easy to hack into and they skip those updates because they either don't need them, or fixed them in another way. This still doesn't mean they should skip updates however. But if you buy a high end device like the P20, you really shouldn't need to worry since Huawei has started updating their devices a lot and even update their midrangers. LG even made a whole new team focused on updates.

And any phone can get slower overtime, it's just that Apple seems to be purposefully trying kill their phones with software updates and they keep messing up their batteries.
