It would be interesting if you could make a full video about Chinese names (of native speakers), that is how parents choose their children’s names, how naming conventions changed throughout the decades, what names would sound old-fashioned now etc. So a more in-depth explanation of what you mentioned about women’s name in the 50s-60s. I’ve always been interested in the subject but I never found much information. Btw, I think at 5:47 you kept the pinyin from the previous image :)

It's interesting because my friend's Chinese name (given to her by her grandparents) is two of the characters that she says are old fashioned. In a way it makes sense though because her family is 5th or 6th generation Americans so those were probably the names common when her ancestors immigrated.

Some of the mainland Chinese names do sound quite simple yet exotic to me as a Chinese born in the diaspora. But why would giving old names to children be seen as weird in the first place? I love old names, they are so beautiful ^^! The old names also carry a history with them, they are the names of our ancestors :D. I see, that a lot of people from China or Asia in general, who are learning Polish (my native language) choose to give themselves names, which are considered as old and the reaction of Poles is always positive. Please, don't get me wrong, I think "modern" names are also ok and are really beautiful too :)! I just personally like the "old" ones :). Even in English (if I would marry an Englishman, I would definitely name our male child James! I love this name!) And btw. my Chinese name is 马宇甜 - my Chinese friend helped me with this one and I'm always happy when I'm called this way and don't really care is it new or old ^^!

My Mandarin name is "李智永," which is inspired by my English last name, and my adopted South Korean name (이지영). My Korean name was able to be completely translated into Mandarin, as all of the Korean characters have Sino-Korean origins. Each character also has relative meaning to me. '李' meaning "plum/plum tree" relates to the plum tree that existed in my front garden; '智' meaning "wisdom" is the conventional opposite of my Latin script first name's meaning (beauty - balance is the key to life!); and '永' meaning "eternal" refers to my family's long life span, and me wanting to build a name and career for myself that won't be forgotten (i.e. "lay my roots down" like a plum tree). When I came up with my Mandarin name, I had thought about the character choices and meanings for a while, if you couldn't tell. "Jade" was also up for contention in the beginning instead of '智,' but I'm happy with my choice. '永' is also in one of my favourite Chinese idioms, "学习永无止境," and always reminds me of 'water' ("水"), which is the world's life source and necessary for a fruitful crop of big, juicy plums! The only downside to this Mandarin name of mine is that it's more popular as a male name in Mandarin (it's a popular, strictly feminine name in Korean), but I'm fine with it, as I have quite unconventional, masculine features in person and spirit, which I like.

This is such an interesting topic. Chinese are really into names and western names and as I first started studying Chinese I didn't think much about adopting a Chinese name. My western name is Timothy 提摩太 or蒂莫西 depending on the translation it could mean timothy hay. 🤣 But I really like the meaning of my name it means honoring God and as someone who likes to study religions I really like the meaning behind my name originating in Greece. I also like watching movies about deities like League of Gods American gods etc. Honoring the gods is 荣誉神 rongyu shèn but I don't think that is a good choice for a Chinese name maybe there are similar ways I will have to look in a thesaurus 🤔. I go to a Taiwanese dao vegetarian restaurant and the owner calls me 明良 . I am currently studying Chinese at a school and they call me 李明郎. I like the traditional two syllable names. I don't know very interesting. I will keep you posted
@jlj19873 жыл бұрын
Dang 说,why you gotta trash my birth year like that? 🤣
Very well done :). Something in general from a western guy like me: I realized many people have a tendency to ignore hyphens all together. So if you want to be sure, spell the name either Yanran or YanRan, no space, no hyphen, and anyone will understand its one name. Yan-Ran could look for western ppl like a double-barrelled given name (like Anna-Marie). And Yan Ran looks like two seperate names. If a westerner reads Yan Ran Peng (or Peng Yan Ran), he will think Ran is a middle name and only Yan the given name. The hanyu pinyin (Peng Yanran) is fine and makes anything clear. :) But the best way is definatly without hyphen/dash or space, because hyphen and space seperate a name. Yanran or YanRan makes 100% clear its one name.

Women in the 1950s and 1960s (my parents’ generation) held these names because the generation before them was more rural, less educated and more simple minded. There was a big difference between country people and city people at the time. And city people (such as my parents) would laugh at the disparity of the unsophisticated country folk. As time passed, the country folk population decreased because more people decided to move to the cities and have kids there and make the kids urban. They also became increasingly aware of the culture of older urban people and decided to choose more sophisticated names for themselves. Nowadays my parents would say that you can’t tell the difference between a country person and city person anymore by the name or the dress or the mindset. And country people can just be as educated and refined as city people so, thanks to the government’s efforts in democratizing education, we really see the gap closing. 😅 By the way, that American friend that the presenter talked about was commenting on traditional or classic western names. They are okay. Eunice would be a bit unusual because people today are less likely to know Latin and Eunice sounds kind of Latiny. People are also less likely to be Christian so the names will definitely be less biblical. And people will drop the use of “Christian name” altogether. 😊

I just directly translated my real name (Nathan > 内森 / Neisen) I know it doesn't sound like a normal Chinese name, but I prefer to just have an easier-to-pronounce version of my real name. I do not personally see the point of having a "Chinese name", because I don't believe that when I am speaking Chinese that I am trying to act out some type of alter ego. I have actually had some interesting discussions with my girlfriend (who is Chinese) about how if we were to have kids we would want to find a name that can be pronounced the same way in English and Chinese, as well as sounds normal in both languages.
Just like she said it would be really weird to put the word “美丽“ (beautiful) in your name but if you want the meaning beauty you can use one of the characters and double it up like this “丽丽“ it also means beautiful and it sound better and good to hear. Btw I’m not bragging but that is exactly my name 沈丽丽. Hehe 😁 I’m half Chinese.

Coming from someone whose Latin script name means "beauty/beautiful," I also agree that it's too straightforward for my liking, and whilst I love who I am, I don't fit the conventional beauty standards, which gives me hope for becoming my best self, but I feel a sort of external conflict between my appearance, and my name. Sorry for the rant, I couldn't explain or relate to it otherwise. Haha. Your name is indeed a beauty! And it matches your English name (channel name).

If you want a character with a similar pronunciation to 靜, I suggest 靖, which has a similar meaning too. For a surname, again, if you want a different surname with similar pronunciation, I suggest 楊, which is very common.

As you can see by my username, my Chinese name is. 倪珥. 倪 (Ní) is a surname that means beginning or original. 珥 (Ěr) can mean either "jade earring or pendant" or my favourite and the one I say my name means, "the beginning of the halo around the sun or moon". I chose 珥 because I like the Pinyin "er" and its meaning and the radical 耳, so this character was made for me even though it's rare, it's also easy to write so it's a win-win situation. I chose 倪 cause I liked it and its meaning as well, and an added bonus, it contains 兒 which also sounds like "er". What do you think? Edit: I forgot, I'm 14

谢谢你,我很喜欢你的视频。我叫”胜肖”, which I picked because I thought it would be a good drill to repeat “sh” and “x” sounds often.

Lolol well my Chinese name was 雪兰 even though my friend did tell me that it was old fashioned, but now maybe I'll change it to 雪岚 since that is a really pretty character and sounds the same X3
@AquaEclipse3242 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is kind of old-fashioned, but 兰 and 岚 only really sound the same in Mandarin (they don't sound the same in Cantonese). But it's your choice!

老师好~ I wonder what you think about my Chinese name. It was given to me by my Taiwanese teacher 汤琰, she also pronounces the 2nd character as yán and not as yǎn (as dictionaries say). I guess she chose the surname Tāng cause my first name is Tomasz (波兰语 version of Thomas). And 琰, cause I wanted something green :D

So when I was studying in Taiwan, I had zero knowledge of anything in Chinese. So the Taiwanese government gave me the Chinese name 孫倪威. Upon many conversations with Taiwanese and Chinese speakers back home, everyone says my name is weird but works out because I'm a 外國人。

My Chinese name is 特隽怡. I picked it because it sounds a little similar to my name. Is it a weird name? I told it to some Chinese people before and they started to say some things in Chinese between them that I couldn't understand, and since I didn't know them, I didn't have the courage to ask :(

I picked my Chinese name, 江莲 , based on the symbolism of the characters. Lotuses grow in the worst of conditions and in still water. Rivers are always running, taking the path of least resistance. Combining the two tells me to keep moving forward, but tranquil at the same time. What do you think when you hear it as a native Chinese speaker?
@zandr11023 жыл бұрын
Young ladies don’t use 莲 very often, so it sounds okay but with a little middle-age vibe. But definitely okay to use. Not weird at all.
@thegreatbufan61582 жыл бұрын
zandr1102 is right about the use of 莲(lotus). 莲 is one of the most 4 respectful and favoured flower typs. It's a good choice. Just a bit old-fashioned if only used alone. If you could find another character with good meaning to match with 莲, then it's perfect. Chinese people tend to find good meaning and words from traditional poems and novels. For example, if you want to keep 莲, there is an prose named 爱莲说(Ode to the Lotus Flower). You can try to pick some good words from this prose and see if sounds good. Like 江逸莲, 江净莲,江蔓莲,江涟莲 ...
