I have the same tandencies.. When something stressful happens in my life I fall to this trap. Just implement the one thing at a time mindset. For example while you wait for the tea kattle put a few dishes to dishwasher, or before you watch something declutter just one drawer.. Never blame yourself and praise every small step. Hope this helps.

These are all symptoms of some sort of trauma we've experienced, even if we aren't in touch with it.❤ A lady wanted to bring me something yesterday and I had to say I was sick. It was too big of a risk she'd just step inside. And I just hated that. I wish my l.r., kitch and b.r. were always company ready. 😞

I’ve cleaned a couple of houses after the people had a crisis. You can see their mental health so clearly once they let you inside. It’s like it mimics what is going on in their thoughts. I call it the house or room that depression built. I stress clean when I’m stressed out, but when I’m entering a depression phase I start keeping everything and over buying pantry food items because of that scarcity mindset. When I come out of a depression phase, it’s like waking up and seeing the piles for the first time and I do a major declutter. I pace myself now with decluttering and it’s much better. I need built in breaks so I don’t get decision fatigue. Edit: I’m sorry you got sick despite doing ALL the right things. That was me last year. I’m glad you all are feeling better.

This is very interesting. I used to stress clean, but since i started the Flylady system, i haven't needed to. I've been concentrating on my garden though, and getting the yard tidy and decluttered makes my sunroom (where i hang out) feel cluttered by comparison. It's not really even untidy but it just feels cluttered.

@@thatswhatisaid8908 I have a small patio with potted plants on it. It used to feel cluttered and unorganized until I reduced the plant types to only a few instead of like a specimen collection. My plants are doing better too. Probably because I’m not fussing over them too much now lol

This! Holy moly, I kept thinking “are you me?” I’m an essential worker and have been extremely overworked, the house and garage is definitely a cluster of extra clutter and I’ve even spilled over into Wayfair and Walmart delivery of more stuff besides Amazon. You validate my frustrations and motivate me to do something. I just hired someone this week to come clean my house- which has and will motivate me to get things less cluttered just knowing someone is coming. I appreciate your vulnerability and honesty- it truly reaches many of us where it counts. So Thank you!

This is me. I’ve been on a sugar binge for weeks and can feel the affects in my joints, etc. Today, I committed to not logging onto internet this morning and spending 15 in a few rooms and rotating. My reward is checking online for 10-15 min. During that time, I look for something like this to educate me and keep me moving towards my goal. This year I will finish the big purge. I can already tell areas I thought I was “good” with need to be decluttered deeper. It just gets too messy too easily, especially the kitchen. Thanks Cas!!!

I love how real your content is! A year ago my husband was hospitalized with Covid pneumonia and almost died. It was a tough period of time, we both had Covid, we’re struggling with fatigue and just trying to manage getting from one day to the next. A year later, I am physically and slowly mentally feeling like I can tackle this crazy out of control house again. Each day I knock off an item or two off my mental checklist. “Spiraling out of control in a dumpster fire….” Yeah. That’s totally accurate for me. My craft room is a disaster bc I decided to tear it apart and reorganize it. Well then my body decided it was a GREAT TIME for a HUGE flair up. 😑🤦🏼‍♀️ Oui. So now I cannot even turn to my “happy place” during this time bc I tore it all up and it just brings me stress and anxiety…. “Like a huge dumpster fire spiraling out of control…” Thank you Cas for always being real with us and helping to articulate what I so often am unable too say. I get tired. i first start with getting rid of what ever needs to be thrown out. On my second go, i work in one spot i start putting stuff away, using tips from her and another organization KZbinr i think minimal mom? . This routine helped me get rid of 2 regular sized plastic bags in 2 days. Though I have a ways to go. You can do it. :) Start small. And if it works for you put on music.

Took my hubby to Urgent Care, then to the ER twice. He's basically fine. At 66 he finally gets Blood Pressure meds... The next day, we both were hit with Covid (Feb. 12) so we were both down in different rooms. The next day (Feb.13) was my B-day and I'm in bed with no appetite. Sleeping again on Valentine's Day when I was woken up with 'bombs' going off in the Living Room. When I regain my senses, I get my phone and go into the next room which is windowless with fire coming into the frames. I try to dial 911 through contacts...then I dial it myself. I'm in my pj's on the line with the dispatch while I'm trying to pull the table, my granddaughter's bookshelves, and horse barn from under the window with flames... The wood floor is burning my feet to 10 feet from the back of the burning log wall. I move as much as I can and go to get dressed for when the FD comes. Had successfully got my daughter's cat into his carrier, but couldn't get mine into hers. I was trying to get her out from under the bed, but was being yelled at by a fireman. We all waited across the road, but couldn't see what was going on because the new patio with timbers and skylights was on fire in the back of the house. Remember we had exhausting Covid. They finally left after putting up plywood over the door and window. We were left with soot all inside the house cause a blast from a hose shot soot from the former deck through the house and slimed everything. Had our insurance agent there that day and the adjuster! They saw more damage from the heat that we didn't see at first, the gate, the shed, and the garage wall which were all about 15-20ft away from the deck. The cleaning service was there the following 2 weeks as I am trying to sleep. We had been down with the Covid for 3 solid weeks. All the outside is waiting for an engineer, but we replaced our brand new chain link fence gate with the strips and we just got our replacement shed that got melted, today. Just had the house painted 2 yrs ago and it is bubbled to about 20ft up the wall. We got to buy new Lazy Boy chairs which we were ready to replace the 40yr old hand me downs soon, a new rug which also was ready to be replaced as well as the couch cushions. Our living room looks like the 'before', but better. So, our next stress is what the engineer will say about having to replace our 30+ft timbers, tongue and groove roof that were burned to a crisp outside as well as taking the back wall of logs apart like lincoln logs. Let more stress commence. Can't wait for the PTSD to hit. I lost 10 lbs by not eating and so far only a few found their way back. Still overweight, been on happy pills since 2000, always tired, were existing at poverty level with 2 incomes (from 1982 -2018) with a very good bill juggling hubby till we got a nice inheritance. I can go grocery shopping and buy a few name brands things but still shop like I used to!

🥰 Thank you for sharing, Cas. This was my family in August. I’d been losing weight, sleeping better, getting my home under control (thank you, Take Your House Back😄). Husband got Covid from meetings with associates from several states. Kids missed the first two weeks of school ☹️, and only one had online options to keep up. So, two kids really struggled last semester. I gained weight, house was getting messy, and it took awhile to get back on track. So, 5 minutes DOES matter, and eventually we climb out of the chaos.

Thank you for showing this vulnerable and human side of your household! It's an on-going struggle for everyone. None of us are perfect and never will be! Sorry about the weight gain too. That is so relatable as well. Out of control feelings leak into other areas of our lives. Get back on the horse and baby step it back to a more comfortable place! We're here with you! I am single and have to do EVERYthing at my home. I find if the house is getting in order the yard suffers. And if the yard is looking good the house falls into chaos again. Put on some music and set that timer! :-) xo

I can't believe how "on the money" this video was for me. I am recovering from what was possibly covid as well. My house is a bit of a mess as I am doing a room switch now that my daughter has moved out. The events in the news and just the bad weather have kept me inside and in bed many days. Depression has crossed by mind but I dont think its enough to get professional help. Today I told myself to get out of bed, shower and do one hour of housework. I timed myself and I ended up doing 3 hours and made dinner! Thank you for all the help! And it's a good thing you got omicron and not delta. Now you have had it hopefully you will have some immunity for the next wave. I tried to look at it in the positive.

I pulled too much out to work on and it quickly got of control. It all really effected my temper, I was too tired to do anything, I was bored and I wasn't getting anything done. Then I realized that we were in for some nasty winter storms and I had to get prepared. That re-started me and now my freezer and pantry are full, I have gotten going again with my efforts to downsize & declutter. I am once again making progress.

Yes!! I know that feeling all too well. When my house gets sick, it's hard to rebound. I was definitely feeling the overwhelmed or anxiety bug. Cleaning therapy was actually very helpful. Someone got the floor done while I got dishes. ADHD , Depression, and Anxiety bugs here. That would explain why my body feels like I want to sleep more. It seems like it's taken almost 2 weeks to even break even with the house cleaning. Zone cleaning is helping though. I can post how that's going for me.

I can totally relate to what you are saying!! My husband retired last year after colon cancer (he's doing fine now), but he sits at home most days and does nothing but sit in chair on the computer. My adult son still lives with us still. He had kidney transplant last year, (he's doing great too). I work full time still, come home and fix supper, do the dishes, (no dishwasher), and everything else in the evening. I do NOT feel like coming home after working all day to clean house. I know exactly where my hot spots are - dining room and kitchen. My son's room is next to the dining room and his stuff ends up in there. He will have at least an article of clothing on almost every chair at the table. He drops everything there. I'm not good about the table either. I can drop things also, but it's because those things really don't have a home. I will get it cleaned up and think I have it organized...and in 2 days you can't tell. It's overwhelming, and makes me not even want to do anything, except if there is someone coming over to the house.

Cas, thank you for always keeping it real. I can relate to this so much. I mention this nearly every time I comment, I sound like a broken record-I’m caregiver to my 29 y.o. Special needs son, and I myself have a daily struggle with chronic illness, pain, anxiety, depression and just plain old burnout. Today I realized that I forgot to pay our mortgage payment. We’ve been in our house 8 years and I’ve never forgotten a mortgage payment before. I know It’s our clutter adding to my stress and overwhelm. You hit it on the head and it makes so much sense. I am going to try my best to do 5 minutes. I was doing well with decluttering until I ran out of steam. Anything is better than nothing. The hardest thing to get is “going” lol. I’m looking so forward to your upcoming videos. I appreciate your candor you inspire and motivate me. 💜

So true!! I have upwards and downwards spirals. If my health is going well, I work out, eat low carbs, losing weight, I have way more energy. I feel motivated to clean and reorganise. Then I feel even better and are motivated to keep going, keep working out and eat healthy and tackle the next room or project. But sometimes, I've had a rough couple of days and I binge on all the chocolate. I feel tired and not motivated at all. I leave the dishes once and before I know it, the kitchen has exploded. I don't do my 5 minute tidy up and before I know it, the living room is a mess. Then I feel bad and eat more chocolate. So, time to hop on the upwards spiral again! Thank you for your honesty! By hearing that you sometimes feel out of controle like me, it also makes me realise that I can also have an organised house in the end, just like you, when things go well. Just got to get up and fight on.

We just had the inside of our house professionally painted. She (a lady painter) was amazing. Her boss asked which rooms I wanted done first. We moved the furniture out of my husband’s study first, in most other rooms the furniture was moved to the centre of the room and covered with drop cloths. She started with the study and on the third day he could move his shelves and 2000 books back in. The rest she did a group of rooms at a time. Two spare bedrooms and main bathroom plus hall were areas we didn’t use and were done without affecting us. Then we moved into one of those bedrooms and she did our bedroom and ensuite bathroom. That left the centre of the house - all the living areas. When one side was done we moved to that side. I was amazed at the minimum of fuss. I was planning to declutter as we put things back because a lot of surface clutter had been bundled up when we moved furniture. It’s been finished a few months now but I am still trying to reduce the clutter that I have on surfaces. But I do recommend painting a house one section at a time. Don’t try to prep every room at once.

I'm definitely an All or Nothing person n also a procrastinater (bad combo)! My home isn't being painted, but the clutter in some of my rooms is a mirror of what you're going through (like you crawled inside my head). At this point 5 minutes is all I can handle; 5 minutes is very achievable. So glad for this video n very happy you n your family are feeling better!!

Thank you so much for this. The last two years have been hard for our family. An emotional "crisis" triggered chaos in our house and as the clutter took over, it felt like everything got worse, everything you described in the video. I had a sneaking feeling that the clutter was breeding chaos but couldn't articulate why. Every time I tried to tackle it I felt overwhelmed and gave up, living in survival mode. About a month ago, after bingeing a bunch of your and @minimalistmom videos, I decided to just set a goal of 20 minutes of decluttering a day. It has worked wonders and I finally feel like I'm making progress on all fronts.

When I moved in to a new house with tons of stuff, I got the bedroom ready and tidy since day one. This offered a place of sanctuary before the rest of the house was done. When a room is out of control, dumping all stuff into containers or lumping them together at one corner instantly reduces visual clutter. This reduces chaos so that one has a calmer setting to declutter and organize the stuff.

I could write an entire book on how I relate to almost EVERYTHING you just said! It reminded me to take before pictures. I have been trying to document my transformation/attempt to be the best me possible. Sadly, it might be timing, but that ended up being a big mistake on my part. I went from excited and motivated to overwhelmed and really tired. And, I hate admitting this to myself, but also felt a lot of disgust and shame when I was taking those pictures. I'm gonna go watch strangers do kind acts!! So I can cry like a three-year-old thinking the world has ended because she didn't get that Dolly. Hope any poor soul that reads this has a fantastic whatever is coming up when you see this!! ❤️ Just remember to be PRESENT!! Enjoy those times, you will miss them, promise.

May I suggest a different thought at night or in the morning. Something like “it’s possible five minutes is enough” or “it’s possible five minutes will make a difference”. Basically any thought that you can believe more than your current thought. I know how horrible it is to feel overwhelmed by it all, and to give up before you start. I hope you can find a way through.

I have followed so many guides and advice and zero have helped like yours do. Your a true hero to me. The becoming angry with our loves hit so hard as I'm listening to you, washing dishes and grumpy because I am the only one that cleans. But the thing is, I am the one that needs the clean kitchen. It only bothers me. It effects me. And I can only work on me. So much gratitude to you.

Covid crushed me in January. It took me 35 days to recover. The fatigue and brain fog the month after was nothing like I've ever experienced. I was frozen and could not start anywhere. The clutter and mess that occurred was on another level and it definitely affected all of these things for me. I was resentful, I was sad, I felt guilty, I was overwhelmed, and I was to tired to fix any of it. Luckily I finally got my mojo back the last two weeks. I've been able to spring clean and get back on track. I have one room left on my list, the garage, and my flower beds. I feel so much better and at peace. I realized for the first time just how much mess affects my mental health.

I've decluttered something Everyday so far this year. No timer, no daily item count, just something. I got rid of over 1000 items in January and 504 items in February. so much so! I've noticed the older our two littles get, the more stuff they accumulate, and the more hobbies they try to explore it's so overwhelming! It started on the heels of my mom passing away so I gave up on all of it, I felt like I was alone and inefficient, sad, tired, I gained 90 pounds in less than 5 years, because I just felt like I was failing everywhere and with all of the things! Then I found this magical place, called my master bedroom, and I've basically been living in that room when I'm not working or running kids to their after school things, because I really just can not deal with stuff/junk/crap whatever you want to call it on ANY flat surface. The floor, the dining table, the kitchen counter, etc. If it's visible, I immediately get anxious and overwhelmed. :( However, we've recognized my part of the messy issue in our house, so I'm trying to fix that, while trying to get our 8 and 10 year old to understand, "hey this isn't how we leave our things, we need to put them away when we're done so we can find them next time we want to play with them" The living room, kitchen and dining room are done. Now I just need to do our master, and help our girls clean up and organize their room (again). Cleaning isn't really the hard thing, it's the stupid maintaining that can be a chore, because I feel as if I'm nagging, constantly having to remind "hey, this needs to get done, hey this needs to be put away" etc. etc. Maybe one day we'll have a clean but lived in house that won't cause a panic attack upon entering the living environment! 😂😂

I really relate to this one. Longtime lurker... I just wanted to say how much you, Dawn and Dana have helped me actually see a difference in my home. I've been struggling for a bunch of years to get my house back to how it used to be. Then mom moved in two years ago and it got a bit more chaotic. Last summer we finally got mostly organized and had started to put a bathroom in on the main floor for her and then I had a flood in November. Stress! Clutter! Snacks! Ahhhhh!! I want to declutter but other things take over. But it's just about done now, they got my laundry hooked up yesterday. I have never been so excited to do laundry. Soon all the stuff they took away for the cleanup will come back and I will be sorting it and plan on donating a lot. It's mostly sewing and art supplies though. So hard. Anyways, thank you so much! I can do this, right?!

Hi Cass! Love all your videos and been watching since the “tip of the day’ days. Fellow Canadian here and you know how our housing market in Ontario is crazy! I feel like millennials are all stuck in tiny homes and condos. We’re a family of 4 living in a condo and the mess can accumulate fast in small spaces! It really starts to get to me and outlets that I want to do like writing gets in a rut because I feel like I need to take that time to clean and organize but with a small space, we have to be so creative in using ever space and cranny because we don’t have a lot ! I would love to know your take on how we can manage organization and have an affective system in tiny apartment size homes with family and kids

Thank you for this. It really hit home. As soon as I read the title I knew I needed to listen. I lost 70 lbs about 8 years ago and was at my ideal weight for approx 3 months. Then thanksgiving happened. A well meaning family member told me to “enjoy ALL the food, fill that plate, this is what you worked so hard for! You deserve to throw down!” And since that day I’ve slowly put on 100 lbs 😭. I’m at the highest weight I ever have been and disgusted with myself, but struggling to get “back on the wagon” but this has given me some motivation.

Oh my!! This video speaks to me so much. My home has been a cluttered disaster for what seems like eternity. When I first bought it, the only ppl living here was my son and myself. Then I found a wonderful man and ended up having two more kids. So now my oldest moved out. But there are still 4 ppl living in a two bedroom house. We have accumulated so much over the years. Turns out my husband is secret horder. Keeps everything from old boxes to old appliances for the just in case moments he could use parts for something else. I'm very overwhelmed. I despise coming home. My entire kitchen is nothing but a catch all. No matter how many times I clean it never stays that way for more then a few hours. It's depressing and exhausting. I have 0 help which makes it even more overwhelming. I know Its takin years to accumulate these things so it's not goin to get taken care of over night. But would love to be able to have a little help in all areas. I'm thankful I've found these videos. They do give me a ton of inspiration and motivation to get started.

I was on a great roll and then it hit the part of my monthly cycle where my iron levels drop and I am tired, weak, and get mental confusion (drs have been investigating as they are concerned but cannot find a reason for it). This means that I have to lay down and / or sit and rest a lot, otherwise i can get migraines and even pass out from severely low blood pressure. This video is sooooo relatable for me right now. I am currently just picking up one thing at a time if i know where it belongs (the mental confusion means i can't make decisions about where to put things if i don't already know) and I'm moving VERY slowly... BUT i am seeing the results and it is encouraging me to just keep doing what i can - even if it IS snail pace - because every little bit helps 🤩
