Agree with many of the comments, at last a video on us shallow swingers!! You nailed my fault in the first part of the video. I’m great off the tee, get away with it on my short irons, but longer clubs accentuate my flat swing causing fats and big hooks. Great drill for me to try. Many thanks
@Jeetz10 ай бұрын
I switched from flat to more upright a few years ago and it was the best thing for my game (compression, distance, easier on the body, divots!). Now my shape shot is a fade. As you mentioned, it's important to turn at the hips when using this swing or you get excessive fadage. A lot of lessons teach to keep your armpits tied to your body....which limits the ability to raise the arms on the backswing.

You described me...I have begun to shallow up my swing as I age...and my once crisp iron game is not what it used to be yet my driver is better & longer than ever. Until this video, I never realized why that was the case, so now let's see if I can successfully follow your correcting advice. Great video.

Bingo..when my driver is amazing my irons will suffer..had noticed my driver was getting better the stonger my grip got and in this vid andy mentioned a strong grip can give u a flat iron backswing espec since he mentioned irons have a steeper lie angle than woods.

Thank you for this video! Almost every video online focuses on over-the-top slicers, and finally there is one for my swing. This has helped tremendously! It was always drilled into my head as a junior to keep my elbow in, which is probably why I have a consistent in-to-out swing. This tip has helped me hit irons much more flush, higher, and with more spin. Thanks for catering to us hookers, even though we might be a smaller group than the slicers.

Thanks Andy! I struggle with this, with the different length clubs is the steepness of the back swing linked to your spine angle, should we try and keep the club shaft about 90 degrees to the spine?
@christinegoulden79402 жыл бұрын
Brilliant video, Andy. I do hit the ball cleanly. I know I am slightly shallow so lose distance. I will give this a go. I have been told my a couple of my club pros that I am too steep with the irons. But it was the way i was taught in the 1980's. I was told to play it like a cricket shot to get the follow through in those days. I don't hit it like that now 38 years on. I have been told you can only take an inch off of a graphite shaft. I am diddy at 5ft 2 inches. So it is to for me.
@scottcraig2569 Жыл бұрын
You described me too a tee. Lol I can still compress the ball because I keep my weight on the left side throughout the swing. I started using these drills and I am hitting some solid shots. Any changes take a bit before they are comfortable though. I am concerned about how it will effect my driver because that was the most consistent club in my bag. Thanks for the tip!!!

@jamiesloan72592 жыл бұрын
This describes me, to a tee. I can consistently hit a high draw, with my driver. However, there was a time that i couldn’t hit a fade, if I tried, and my short iron contact was sketchy. I’ve changed that, through experimenting with “plane”. One of the main things that helped me, besides consciously swinging the club steeper, was to stand slightly closer to the ball, at setup. I’m not sure if you would recommend this, but it just feels natural to swing steeper, when standing slightly closer. Love the content in this video. Definitely for lower hc players.

Yes absolutely, get a little closer and work the arms UP. Nice change

Good lesson again there Andy. I know when I bow my left wrist on the takeaway, it gets a little inside. My solution is to bow the wrist to start the transition now. It’s helps me not to drop the club at the top as I have for 24 years. 🤣🥂

Another gem Andy. Great explanation on the backswing mechanics and feels. Came to may be find out more about shallowing the club, straight away found out that I'm already doing it 😂been happy with my woods lately, wedges not so much. Prone to duffs and the occasional shank. Now I know what to look out for. When I try to correct my hooks by going more infront on the backswing though, I find myself fading it instead, which I don't like and am even worse at controlling. It's a constant fight. May be you've got some more tips to manage a consistent draw?
@andycartergolf2 жыл бұрын
What happens is that your downswing is manipulated because of the flat backswing. But when you steepen the backswing the downswing doesn’t know that so continues to manipulate and steepen it so now you’re out to in. You need to fix downswing once backswing is better. Or embrace and control the fade without hitting too much spin and losing distance.

Great tips. It's easy for me to focus so much on dropping my hands and clearing my hips-with lag, I sometimes forget to not swing too shallow. It'll be great once my muscle memory is of a decent swing, not my "one round a year ax-chop!"

So, I bought one length Cobra Iron Golf Clubs and had a Club Champion fitting for my driver. People say my swing looks good, but they also say I should hit the ball further. Since, all my irons are the length of a seven-iron, I don't feel the need to shallow the club much. With the driver I do. With both driver & iron, I try to make sure my right wrist is bent back & my right elbow points towards the ground before I start my downswing. The mechanics of my swing are to bump my hips toward the target, then simultaneously start my knees and hips rotating as I drop the right elbow toward the liver. My hips go first & then my torso & shoulders. I try not to engage my shoulder turn until my club shaft is at a 20-degree up angle to the ground. Have I got a grasp on this shallow, & then, swing technique?

I’m waiting for the video that helps me go from hitting off a mat on a simulator all winter, to going back to grass in the spring. lol. Simulator’s are great for those of us that don’t live in places like Dubai, but they sure do cause some bad habits.
@andycartergolf2 жыл бұрын
We coach on mats in the studio, the transition is a little different but doesnt cause any bad habits or different shots. You’re still using the same golf swing. For example, If you Fat it off a matt the matt will forgive and the ball travels, but the grass is less forgiving. The grass isnt the issue the ball striking is.

I can I say this and be politically correct? Do slightly large body golfers around the mid drift suffer with this golf swing? As I’ve got older the belly has expanded (not too much I might add) and I’ve lost compression on my irons which has lost my distance. However if I’m honest I think I’m allowing the club to reach behind too much on the take away.
@andycartergolf2 жыл бұрын
Yes I’ve seen it, i often encourage a steeper golf swing. so although its out to in, if you can control the clubface at impact then you’ll get better compression
