This is the best explanation of how to properly take the club back, and what the correct feels are, that I have ever seen and I've been swinging a club for over 4 decades. I'm guilty of what you described in the inside takeaway moves and it has really messed up my swing. I am now focused on the takeaway as you outline here and it is a game changer. Thanks for the clear and clean explanation of this way too overlooked element of the golf swing.

Ryan, I am so happy that I came across your site. The manner in which you explain the problem is clear, concise and quite helpful. Your remedies are spot on, at least they are working for me :-) It is pure “gold”! I can’t wait to see more of you clear and thoughtful lessons.

That diagonal stick is a good one. thanks! I'm very much working on this, I am/was the default inside takeaway under plane, hinge very late, and then squeezing it on the same shallow plane back in to out with a lot of toe flip timing required to square the face, losing distance too because I needed to stall my lower half halfway the downswing. duck hooks as a favorite miss. what works perfect for me is a drill where I push down with the left hard and and apply a very early wrist set that way. The hard press on the handle (pivoting on my right hand) propels the club up so fast that I simply don't have time to take it back inside 🙂. The only real focus point is to keep the handle pointing left of target until shaft parallel. Not only does that cure my hook, but also compresses the ball better, don't even need a long backswing either.

Love the assistance with the alignment sticks. You see so many people show this same thing, but don't explain how to setup the sticks. Do you have a similar drill to make sure you are swinging from the inside and not coming down too steep?

Quick question. How do you keep a flat lead wrist when doing this? I feel like I cup my lead wrist when I think about hinging vertically while blending it with the shoulder turn

Hi @Ryan with the alignment stick set up at the let say 45 degree angle, can one use it for the takeaway but then continue to make a full swing and hit the ball without the alignment stick impeding your swing?

Is the wrist hinge done on a straight up and down vertical line or is it hinged slightly toward your right shoulder? Can you kindly clarify?
@ryanmouquegolf4 ай бұрын
@@jeffreysparbeck7725 you want SOME straight up and down and some bed back of the trail wrist. If you combine those, you’ll be pretty good
@jeffreysparbeck77254 ай бұрын
@@ryanmouquegolf thanks for the quick response! I believe I understand what you’re looking for which would be some slightly hinge motion towards the right shoulder as you hinge up
@ryanmouquegolf4 ай бұрын
@@jeffreysparbeck7725 yeah correct. I’ve never really thought of it that way but in theory yes. Not a direct hinge up toward your nose, but also not a bend back of the trail wrist that has the club work too far inside the hands and around ur backside.

Hi, does the start of the takeaway go slightly in with your natural arc or should it go straight back? Thanks
@ryanmouquegolf7 ай бұрын
Slightly in mate. Straight back would technically be outside. The swing works on an arc so it will need to work in just a touch

Hey Ryan. Thanks this has really helped me take it inside less. I was just wondering if you had any advice for players who have been inside takeaway with a shut clubface and achieved the proper takeaway now but therefore are struggling because none of their previous transition and downswing feels are applicable anymore? E.g., when I had an excessively closed clubface and inside takeaway I could feel the weight of the club (because it was crazy-flat at the top). Now that I've improved the takeaway the swing feels so vertical that the sensation feels like a bunker shot. Now I struggle to sense the difference between a flushed shot and a heely/spinny/shanky one., i.e., both swings feel the same but it is now difficult to differentiate between open/ closed/ square face. Not sure if that makes sense. I am now getting good height and spin with a minor loss in distance but have no sense of where the face is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Due to my difficulties I've gone up from a 5hcp to a 9.

😂😂 my pro just showed me this today. I could be in the middle of the fairway with 115 into the green and pull it left. Rely on a good chip, which I can often do ,then make a Must par putt. I could be looking at birdie more often or a very comfortable 2 putt par.. I've got a practice day tomorrow for my Tuesday league tournament. Good advice, thanks.
