One of the most common complaints I hear when folks begin working with R+ training, is that when they are not doing R+ training their horse STILL looks for treats! The best way to avoid this happening in your training is to be SUPER CLEAR when your horse can receive rewards versus when rewards are not available. Here are 3 tips to help! 1. Never carry your treat pouch on you when you’re not doing R+ sessions. I don’t ever carry to treats (hay pellets) on me unless my horses can earn them. When your pouch is on, it’s all systems a go! 🚀 2. Teach the ALL DONE cue! 🙅🏼♀This one is essential for ending an R+ session. When I’m done with my training session, I say “ALL DONE” and toss 3 small handfuls of my treats (hay pellets) into a feed pan and exit the training area. This helps my horses know that the sessions is over, without feeling like I’m leaving and punishing them. If you routinely do this your horse will begin to understand this new cue as the end of an R+ session. 3. If you are working with a crossover horse ( a horse that does both R+ and R- in different sessions or contexts) you’ll always want to do your R- sessions, rides, etc BEFORE your R+ sessions. If you need to do your R+ sessions first then you’ll need to give your horse a 15 minute brain break🧠 This gives them enough time for their seeking system to relax. When you come back into the training area without your R+ equipment on you can proceed as you normally do. My LAST 2024 R+ coaching intensive begins in ONE MONTH! I do carry treats around most of the time in my pockets. Peanuts in shell usually. -- I do have a double hand signal showing horses that I have nothing on me. Gotta be consistent & not reward "mugging". I use positive reinforcement a lot, but in day to day is almost like a "thank you" for a known behavior. Quietly standing while I clean your sheath while standing in the yard, for example. They already know what to do, so it's a reward like a "thanks" for being such a "good boy". If it's a big ask, like treating a sore ear. Big chaching reward at the end. -- Glad found your channel. Recent viewer.

It’s called a side bucket! I got it from Shawna Karrasch

I just use pockets or a zipper hip bag. Never used those open buckets. I can't bend over without having stuff fall out with something like that.

@@GypsyEquestrian Shawna started out training dolphins & seals, I think. So those open buckets on hip probably started out as fish. I use a zipper hip bag or just big pockets.

Just wondering, what discipline do you do? Show jumping, dressage, evening, none of the above? Do you just train?

As in competition? I don''t compete. Trail riding is what I used to do 5 days a week because I lived next to amazing trails in the Pacific Northwest but my lessons have been in dressage, I'm not currently riding much since my car accident limits what I can physically do now.
