This is why I've been subscribed to your channel for the last several years. The medieval knights wore armor to help defend against bladed attacks.Same with the samurai.I could never see how people could come up with knife defenses without any armor.

I used to work in mental health, and I have trained in HEMA. Actually, did have someone pull a kitchen knife on me. I picked up a broom handle and held out in front of me like you would do a sword and kept the person at a distance. I also got the hell out of dodge as quickly as possible.

Dr. Sayf I saw a movie movie about knife fighting about thirty years ago starring Peter Coyote called exposure. It’s was about a man learning how to knife fight after surviving a knife attack. The scenes of him learning these fighting techniques were amazing. At the time of watching this movie I was well verse in Seido karate, style descended from Kyokushin and judo. This movie made me feel naked and exposed. Watching this movie made me realize that a skilled knife fighter would likely kill any unarmed man no matter how skilled that unarmed man is skilled in combat. That movie change the way I trained in karate and judo.

Hope your surgery goes well and you heal fast. Imo, I think the only real chance you have bare handed against someone committed to stabbing you if you cant run away or find something to use as a weapon is a knockout punch before you are mortally wounded assuming you have the skill and power to pull it off. But then again that is no defense against a sneak attack. Looking forward to your videos on the subject.

Excellent advice that no martial arts school teaches. Everything you said is 100% true Any Gracie Jiujitsu instructor will tell you that it is best to run away if two or more people happen upon you. If talking them down doesn't work, then get away quickly. A speedy recovery from your surgery and many blessings. Thank you, sir.

Its grim. What are the two sayings? Two people leave a knife fight. The dead and the dripping. They go to two places the hospital or the morgue. We dont wear thick clothing it doesnt take much to get cut. In regards to the training its EGO! I have dealt with this same scenario years ago with fencers as well. I bought foam weapons to train with instead of fencing with steel to try to simulate different things and to have low entry to train so new people didnt need to spend $800+ on fencing jackets, gloves, cod pieces and masks. They look at me and tell me with a straight face that it is "larping". To them they are toys and they dont want to be seen swinging foam around because it is embarrassing to them. Evens lions playfight with cubs but we too good for a foam waster. Humans have made training implements for all recorded history. Back to romans with wooden wasters and wooden pells but foam is too far. Persians would make clay pyramids to cut and japanese would make mats to cut to train edge alignment but we too good now. No one accuses them of playing with grass, wood toys or clay dirt but you are silly if you use a marker. Its absurd! The same people also cringed when I wanted to train with a group called " the saber legion". Why wouldnt I train with lightsaber nerds? Years ago men would sometimes need to PAY untrained people to spar and they would be skittish . You have entire groups of untrained novices trying AND WANTING to hit you in undynamic strange ways with easily visible GLOWING batons that also make noise impact. How is that not training against untrained individuals? I even got lucky and fought against other martial artists as well. FREE crosstraining with no ego because its not art vs art we are using lightsabers. Its perspective thats the issue and people need to be humble and think outside the box to get their training in. If I said I had tactical training batons and this is simulation training all of the sudden it sounds cool and those same people would have loved the lightsabers. This may come off as controversal but I have no problem going into different groups and training in different ways. Yes I would like to hit people with steel feders, synthetic feders, rattan, shinai, foam and yes even glowsticks lightsabers im not picky. Its the made of the same materials as "real batons" but now it has a flashlight, motion sensor and speakers attached to it. Now all of the sudden people get scared of it I guess shame hurts more. Thats false pride holding them back.

You're right once again. You probably think I agree with you too much, and I know it looks that way. But what it really is, is that up to this point, you have told the truth, and as far as I can discern, have always been logical. As long as you continue to use Logic, and I don't hear any bullsh*t ( please excuse my French), I'll continue to agree with you. That's because I'll always agree with LOGIC and TRUTH. With that said, I can understand why you don't talk about Knife Defense. I haven't been attacked with a Knife (outside of trainning), but my level of understanding from combat trainning is that Real World Effective Knife Defense is potentially very ugly. Back in the day I practiced Aikido for a couple of years. What most people don't seem to understand about REAL Aikido is that it comes from Daito Ryu. Daito is all about defense against Knives, Clubs, and Swords etc...... It's the Old Samurai Art, and it's vicious..... In my humble opinion, I was just beyond Beginner Level when I stopped . But those two years gave me enough knowledge to know what it was all about. I said all of that to say this,... I know for a fact that to effectively stop a knife attack, especially against multiple attackers, you're gonna have to hurt somebody if you can't RUN AWAY IMMEDIATELY. Maybe not kill em, but you're gonna have to hurt at least one of your attackers pretty badly to get the attack to stop if they're truly determined to hurt you..... And you're gonna get cut, the only question is how badly. The only way to totally avoid GETTING CUT is to have an almost Preternatural Awareness. Meaning a high level of FORESIGHT to be able to avoid the encounter altogether. Baring that, you must have INSIGHT. Meaning the ability to read a situation including the other person's body language, and energy in order to pre-emptively move or, "Get the jump", on your attackers. When the violent encounter actually begins, you would need seemingly "Precognitive Reflexes", or at the least almost inhuman Speed and Agility. Add to that the ability to perfectly blend with your attackers' movements and redirect their energy in order to avoid the business end of their weapons. Don't stop there, add on the knowledge of how to manipulate Human Joints and Connective Tissue with perfect Timing and Technique to control the attackers movements in order to either disable the weapon wielding limbs of your attackers or dislodge and dispose of the weapons themselves. I haven't even mentioned the type of strikes and where you HAVE TO DO for any of this to actually work. Who can do all of that perfectly,..... Realistically Speaking? Maybe you can, I can't....and I was, "Trained". I got pretty good, enough to save my life, MAYBE, but I doubt if any Mortal can ever totally avoid GETTING CUT. Also, Realistically Speaking, we're not going to avoid HURTING OUR ATTACKERS in order to save our LIFE AND LIMBS. So how does the encounter conclude? Do they run away? Do you? Can anyone move away under their own power? Training in Martial Arts and debating it's various Philosophies are always good activities in my humble opinion. And I pray not to have any future violent encounters. I've already had enough excitement in life thank you very much. You notice I haven't mentioned any of the actual graphic details of Knife Defense, I'll leave that to you Master Carmen. Most people don't want to think about the reality of an actual VIOLENT ENCOUNTER, especially with a Knife, which is understandable. Yes, THE REAL DETAILS can and actually should be potentially disturbing to any healthy minded person. This subject must be handled honestly and expertly. Which is why I look forward to your videos Discussing and Demonstrating these matters. I think they are indeed quite necessary. Let the Brazilian Jujitsu Fanboys CHEW ON THOSE. I know they won't have any believable Counter-Arguments to post against any of the actual, "Old World", Knife Defenses I learned, especially when Physical Demonstrations are involved.... Because none of those arguments have survived. Great video.

@Isporter88: My brother, I DO NOT think you agree with me for the following reason: You NEVER repeat word for word what I say. You always ADD to what I have said which shows me that you think for yourself and as deep on the subjects as I. I know when people are just repeating and agreeing. You are not one of them. I value your input and if you ever did disagree, because of your clear thinking, I would take your disagreement into consideration. Thanks for your support and God bless. S

I need to incorporate this test myself and with my students, my art, our art is Rofist Combative, which is a combination of Wing Chun-not the forms and technical side-just the basic stuff, old school Akido, judo, Jujutsu, Tkd, boxing and etc. And yeah do engage in some form of sparring rather that be one v one or two v one, but never with the way you explained it. 🤔 but man, I really want to try it and see the result.

At the top of my head judo or aikido should be able to pass these test. But I'm only thinking hypothetically. I have to do this test myself to find out if I'm right or not.

@nappyheaded: I would say Aikido COULD do better than most. But, you cannot evade forever and the unlikely throws using the wrists need to be left to the demonstrations.

You know what Sifu, you are the only person i have heard have the opinion that you questioned whether they're really is in existence a form of defense that is empty-handed against the knife attack. I know what a a small 3 1/2 inch blade across the stomach from an old Buck 110 is capable of doing. Trust me, I really think knife techniques and knife"defense" should not be taught as it can give people a false sense of security.
