Here we explain how you can see if your Sonos Arc is getting Dolby Atmos signal. Also we go over when you need to enable EARC in your TV settings. Here the Sonos ARC was connected to a Samsung 65" frame TV (2020 model), and EARC was not enabled, as EARC was not needed for streaming Dolby Atmos.
If you have a Samsung QLED (Q80T) or Sony 950H check out this video where we go over these sets with the amazon prime app on specific devices to verify we receive dolby atmos. • Testing the Sonos Arc ...

I’m a fan of your channel and I have a issue/question. I just got a new 2022 LG C2 OLED TV, a Sonos Arc/Sub/SL One speakers, and I got my Sonos Arc connected to the eARC port on my TV via a 2.1 HDMI cable. I am watching & streaming Dolby Atmos content on Prime Video & Netflix via my TV apps, but I’m only getting eARC 5.1 sound through the Sonos system and not Dolby Atmos. The Dolby Atmos settings on my TV are greyed out and the Sonos app is showing that I’m only getting a 5.1 signal when I’m connected to the eARC port on my TV. I tried connecting the Sonos ARC to the TV using a non-eARC hdmi port and I’m able to get Dolby Atmos only through my TV speakers. The Sonos system only works with the TV when I connect to it via the eARC port, but it doesn’t allow for Dolby Atmos. Is there a workaround for this? I hear of others experiencing the same issue with LG OLEDs and the Sonos Arc.

This is most likely an LG software problem. We just tested this again on our Sony A90J OLED with the amazon prime native TV app and the 4K Max firestick. With Jack Ryan both the Native TV app, and the firestick 4K max app worked just fine with dolby atmos showing when jack ryan was playing. Make sure Dolby digital plus is selected in the LG audio settings if you can. We do not have an LG on our floor. My guess is there is a software problem with the LG sets and the sonos arc. Other options, try using a roku or firestick as the app source. However if the problem is not caused from the app but tv, this will not matter. Or return the LG OLED and purchase a Sony OLED. If you tried a different brand with the arc that would be another way of troubleshooting.

Check for software updates on both the LG TV and the sonos arc. Also in the LG TV audio settings, see if there is a way you can select the audio output signal. If there is choose dolby digital, not dolby digital plus, or try PCM. If the LG TV is new, make sure earc is off in the audio menu. If those don't work, suggestions would be to contact LG and or Sonos.

Hello. I hope you can clear this up for me. I have this setup: Sonos Arc via eARC to LG CX and Apple TV 4k via "normal" HDMI input to LG CX. There's only 1 HDMI input labelled eARC/ARC behind the TV andI don't know what to call the other HDMI inputs. My questions are: one, will I be getting Dolby Atmos from streaming Netflix on the LG CX itself? and two, will I be getting Dolby Atmos from playing Netflix on the Apple TV 4k even if the Apple TV 4k is not plugged in the eARC-labelled HDMI input of the TV?
@FisherCustomAV
@FisherCustomAV 4 жыл бұрын
Question 1: Yes, I would suggest turning off the eARC feature in the LG CX TV, it will not be needed. Also make sure you upgrade netflix to the 4K upgraded plan, or you will not be supplied atmos from netflix. The atmos you receive will be compressed. Question 2: Yes, you should get atmos from netflix on your apple 4k TV, as long as again you upgrade to the 4k netflix plan. It will be compressed atmos, and compressed atmos does not need eARC, as ARC will be just fine to process it. One other person also mentioned, you may need to check audio settings in your TV and apple TV to make sure dolby digital + is selected as the audio, but I can't confirm that as it can vary from manufacturer.

@@FisherCustomAV WRONG as to the Apple TV 4K. Though Netflix itself streams DD+ Atmos, due to a weird Netflix technical requirement for Atmos support on most external devices the ATV 4K outputs Netflix as so-called MAT Atmos, which is Atmos metadata in uncompressed multichannel PCM. MAT Atmos, like the TrueHD Atmos used on Blu-rays (mostly 4K but some regular), is NOT supported by regular ARC; you will need eARC to pass MAT Atmos from the ATV 4K's Netflix app via the TV to the Arc. (The LG TV's Netflix app may OR may not support DD+ Atmos via regular ARC.)

@@richellebrittain2127 You know you can respond nicely and not slam the people who made the video. That answer I mentioned above was based on conversations with different technicians from TV manufacturers who stated that to their knowledge atmos on all streaming services is compressed, and all devices would not need earc on. With that said, your statement may be right. The only true way to know is for someone to make a video with an apple 4k TV and earc TV and find out. This is from apples site... support.apple.com/en-us/HT204069 Interesting they show hooking up your apple 4K TV to a earc soundbar and then using the soundbar to pass the apple 4k TV to your TV. That may be how it has to be done. Again, a good thing for someone to try is hookup the apple 4k TV as shown from apple, and then hook it directly up to the TV, and see if you get atmos both ways or only one. You are right in a different comment. if you are using media, such as bluray with atmos both the bluray and TV would need earc on.
@richellebrittain2127
@richellebrittain2127 4 жыл бұрын
@@FisherCustomAV If you wanted a nicer response, perhaps YOU shouldn't spread disinformation. The Apple support page you posted presupposes an Atmos AVR or soundbar with HDMI inputs (or I sometimes call it "forward" HDMI for clarity), which the Arc does NOT have; it only has a nominal HDMI "out" (I don't think it outputs any video, but I may be wrong) with an eARC-capable ARC channel. Your response also assumes the capabilities of eARC are unknown; that is 100% incorrect. Truth is, eARC increases the bandwidth of the ARC channel to the same as "forward" HDMI (what the Apple support page depicts), so that eARC can support the SAME audio formats as "forward" HDMI, including ALL THREE flavors of Atmos (DD+, TrueHD, and MAT). Regular ARC, OTOH, supports only ONE flavor of Atmos: DD+. Also, eARC mandates certain lipsync control measures that were only optional in regular ARC. I also know from my research that at least the Netflix app in the Apple TV 4K requires MAT Atmos capability to output Atmos, even though Netflix itself uses DD+ Atmos. Unconfirmed rumors say Netflix has this weird technical requirement that it will only stream Atmos to devices that can decode DD+ Atmos internally; though that doesn't necessarily explain all Atmos-capable Netflix streaming devices (especially TVs with regular ARC, though I suspect my own TCL 5-Series 4K Roku TV re-encodes all Dolby bitstreams as DD+ to avoid most issues with lipsync & delayed sound on channel changes; other TVs that send DD+ Atmos from their Netflix apps via regular ARC may do the same thing), it DOES explain the use of MAT Atmos as an output format by the ATV 4K, as well as by Xbox One & Series consoles and the most recent Nvidia Shields. (It MAY also be true of the Roku Ultra, reportedly the first external Roku device -- as opposed to Roku TVs -- to stream Netflix in Atmos.) Thus, to stream Netflix in Atmos from an ATV 4K to the Arc, you MUST connect the ATV 4K to either (a) an eARC TV with eARC enabled, or (b) the HDFury Arcana ($199 at hdfury.com/product/4k-arcana-18gbps/ ), which by accounts lives up to its claim as the "WORLD’S FIRST eARC adapter that allows FULL AUDIO up to Dolby Atmos over TrueHD from ANY external HDMI source to ANY eARC sound system. Perfect solution for SONOS Arc and ANY eARC AVR, soundbar or headphones." (Its 4K120 & 8K capabilities, OTOH, apparently leave something to be desired for Xbox Series & PS5 owners. Perhaps the next generation.) In addition, ANY external device that plays material using DTS codecs MUST convert the sound to something else as the Arc has ZERO support for DTS. (This includes ALL regular Blu-ray players, including gaming consoles back to the Xbox One & PS3, as the most common codec on regular Blu-rays is DTS-HD Master Audio; it may even include DVD players as some DVDs used regular DTS.) The ONLY ways to do that via regular ARC are (a) re-encode as DD+ or DD, a loss in quality for DTS-HD MA tracks (including DTS:X, which is DTS-HD MA with metadata similar to TrueHD Atmos), or (a) fold it down to stereo PCM. With eARC, however, you devices can decode it to multichannel PCM, which is ultimately the same quality as DTS-HD MA. (Xbox Series & possibly even One consoles with the DTS Sound Unbound app MAY be able to decode DTS:X & convert it to MAT Atmos, but that DOES remain to be tested.) Perhaps what you're most embarrassed about is that while you hold yourself out as an electronics expert on KZbin, I learned all of this via research without owning an Arc or ANY eARC-capable soundbar (I recently bought a Vizio SB36512-F6 as it's apparently the best Atmos soundbar within my limited budget), *OR* an eARC TV (my Roku TV is regular ARC only), *OR* an ATV 4K (I have a 4K ATV app on my Roku TV but it's not the same as a physical ATV 4K), *OR* a gaming console since the PS3, *OR* even a Netflix subscription (though I'm leaning towards starting one with my stimulus check after all this). Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. :p

However whatever app you are using, my guess is you are using the native TV app, try using a roku, or firestick on the Q90T and see if that app allows the atmos to pass through. Why not just leave eArc on if your tv supports it? So regardless your getting the best version of whatever the TV sends ? Like I don’t see the point of having it off, it’s backwards compatible with any version compressed/uncompressed. For example Netflix last year, increased its bit rate for compressed Dolby atmos to 768kbps, the max output for standard arc is 640kbps. So by having eArc disabled Netflix is forced to use the lower stream of atmos for some sources, I know this is the case when measuring with Apple TV 4K in developer mode And a LG CX oled. The main benefit with eArc is it allows you to pass though the audio source directly to the receiver (Sonos arc) in this case to process the audio as it’s being sent from he source. This is not 100% the case with all Standard HDMI ARC TVs, for example 2018 Samsung TVs regardless of model cannot even send atmos meta data over standard arc. They added this is 2019, but not all arc is equal, where in the case of eArc it is more equal, because it allows the option of direct pass though, and it’s up to the receiver to support that pass though signal (DTS, Dolby true HD, digital plus etc)

Great point and question. Currently the main reason to leave EARC off is because of software bugs between manufacturers of audio products and TV's. There have been some cases where people have had EARC on, and had no audio to the Sonos ARC, and by turning off EARC audio returns. Should they have audio....yes. But because of software bugs and issues, EARC currently can cause problems, a main one being no audio. If you look at NateDoggs comment, he had that very scenario, and by turning off EARC, audio returned.

Hello. I am having issues getting Dolby Atmos working on my Sonos Arc. I am using the firestick 4k. I have the premium Netflix 4k account. I updated my 4k TV to the latest software. Also I set both the TV and firestick audio settings to Dolby Digital. I made sure to play Netflix movies that support Dolby Atmos like El Camino and Klaus but they just show 5.1. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Also just wanted to note that if I set both the TV and firestick audio settings to auto it will use PCM 2.0.

@@mannymedrano3208 Okay this could be an audio setting in your firestick or TV. Goto the audio settings of the firestick, and try to choose just dolby digital or dolby 5.1 surround or just surround. Or change it to stereo or PCM. Also look for these settings in your TV and make the same changes there.

I have the same type of Samsung TV, but when I go in and turn of the HDMI eARC mode of, I get Dolby Digital Plus 2.0 on my Sonos app. When I have the HDMI eARC mode on , I get Dolby Multichannel PCM 2.0 on my Sonos app. Trying to get Dobly Atmos, but nothing no matter what I try. Tried Sonos support twice and I was told it's the tv and contact Samsung and the other time was told Dolby Multichannel PCM 2.0 is basically Dolby Atmos and is close enough. Any help is appreciated!

First try watching this second video where I go into a bit more detail on TV settings in samsung and sony. ttps://kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6TdpHx_d8hmp8k This is probably a software issue related to both samsung and sonos. There have been some issues with software between sonos and samsung regarding atmos and earc. Sonos has said they have issued a software update for this and samsung is in the process. With that being said, that is not a guarantee that it will correct it. Without me being there and contacting a lot of support I can't offer much more.

DD+ Atmos will work over regular ARC (I think that's the point of this video). Thus if your TV will output DD+ Atmos over regular ARC, the Arc should handle it.

I get confused... I've read that eARC is for full hi-res audio, but if I have say the new PS5/Xbox coming out, would I not be able to get the full capability of the ARC if I plug the ARC into the console for output, and the TV into the Console for obviously video output? I ask because everyone says that if you plug the Sonos ARC into the tv using ARC that you get lossy atmos, not full atmos?
@FisherCustomAV
@FisherCustomAV 4 жыл бұрын
That is basically correct. However this would apply to all atmos soundbars of all brands. Atmos is just a codec. Currently for all streaming services it comes compressed. This may change if they can make it come uncompressed through streaming. Any video or audio compressed would lose some some type of quality, (some small amount). You could compare it to FLAC audio which is uncompressed, or MP3 audio which is compressed. Some people may hear the difference between compressed and uncompressed atmos, others may not.

I don't think you always need to go into the tv settings and turn off e arc everytime you want to watch streaming content then back on again to veiw blueray media. And when i have regular tv veiwing it doesn't it shows channel pcm

It can be uncompressed, however that takes more bandwidth and storage. So currently streaming services compress this audio.
@richellebrittain2127
@richellebrittain2127 4 жыл бұрын
Dolby TrueHD, however, is lossless compression. Thus, in addition to 4K Blu-ray players (as the video says), even *regular* Blu-ray players need eARC turned on in the TV to send lossless audio to the Arc. (There are also a few regular Blu-rays with Atmos over TrueHD, the same flavor of Atmos as 4K Blu-rays.) In addition, Blu-ray players (regular or 4K) will need to decode all DTS codecs (regular DTS, DTS-HD MA, DTS:X) into multichannel PCM, which also requires eARC, as the Arc does not support *any* DTS codec. (The vast majority of regular Blu-rays use DTS-HD MA.) DTS:X bitstreams will lose their immersive audio in that conversion (i.e., essentially limited to DTS-HD MA), except POSSIBLY (unconfirmed as I don't own an Xbox) for the Xbox One S/X & Series X with the DTS Sound Unbound app (which will decode DTS:X, but possibly only for games & not Blu-rays) and the output set to so-called MAT Atmos (multichannel PCM with embedded Atmos metadata). Also, external streaming devices that output MAT Atmos (such as the Apple TV 4K and certain Nvidia Shields) will need eARC; some smart TVs with Netflix apps MAY also need eARC to get Atmos from Netflix (YMMV).
