Hands down this is one of the greatest songs Natalie has ever written. She is an astounding woman and musician.

A brilliant masterpiece from the band's best record. You literally can't believe you're hearing what you're actually hearing. It's that good.

As a father of now-grown daughters, that line "Every time we say goodbye you're frozen in my mind as the child that you never will be, you never will be again" hits different. The fact that Natalie Merchant sings it with such grace and sensitivity brings me to tears every time.

y how you've grown I remember that phrase From my childhood days too, "Just wait and see" I remember those words and how they chided me When patient was the hardest thing to be Because we can't make up for the time that we've lost I must let these memories provide No little girl can stop her world to wait for me I should have known At your age, in a string of days, the year is gone But in that space of time it takes so long Because we can't make up For the time that we've lost I must let these memories provide No little girl can stop her world to wait for me Every time we say goodbye You're frozen in my mind As the child that you'll never will be You never will be again I'll never be Be more to you than a stranger could be Every time we say goodbye You're frozen in my mind As the child that you'll never will be You'll never will be again Every time we say goodbye You're frozen in my mind As the child that you'll never will be Will be again

Listening to this beautiful song, 27 years after its release, I am wondering what the chances are of such wonderful songwriting and musicianship reaching a mass audience today in 2019? Virtually nil, I guess. There are still many great young songwriters and artists out there, but one has to search hard and follow recommendations.

I blame the large record companies buying the small ones and then streaming. It takes so many listens to make a penny. 10,000 Maniacs didn't crack the top 40 much (maybe once) but they could sell enough to keep releasing albums. Today they could not make a living. If people had to go back to actually paying for music we might start to hear great music again (instead of searching hard for the people even willing to grind it out).

I don't have to search that hard. In most cases, the music I love most has a way of finding me.

My Dad wrote me a letter back in 1990 after he left my Mum, took my Brother with him. I never understood that letter at 8, anyway it was from my Dad so still precious and I still have it. He died in 2016 and since then i have listened to 10,000 maniacs to feel close to him i suppose. I was driving lustening to this song thinking , i wonder if my Dad was thinking of me when he listened to this song. I am a girl btw, i share this yt with my Hubby. Then all of a sudden that letter popped into my head! Soon as i got home i went to re read it and it was the lyrics to this song he had written! I really dont know how that letter suddenly entered my head as i was listening.. Silly maybe but i like to think it was my Dad guiding me to it and that letter is still so precious to me and so is this song. Music = powerful connections. ❤🎶🎶
