The big, tall "weeds" that you pulled out, the ones with the fuzzy light green leaves and the spikes of flowers, are mullein. It's a medicinal herb that is great for respiratory stuff and ear infections. You can use the leaves to create smudge bundles. And back in the day, the leaves were used as toilet paper because they are so soft. :) You can also chop and drop the leaves to add some lovely nutrients to your compost or garden beds.

The reason the sounds are so engaging is because the sounds of the city are missing. There is nothing like the silence of the wilderness. On summer days, the only thing you hear at times is the buzzing of insects fertilizing the flowers. So many places today are too noisy to enjoy such treats.

When watching a series like this, I think it’s important to remember that despite the pioneering energy and obvious abilities, it is also a learning curve - there is still much that the series characters have to learn. In this case, I sort of flinched at harvesting the cabbage head because there are always ways to keep a full-grown plant like that continuing to produce. Not knowing and using those techniques displays an unconscious attachment to the supermarket. I flinched again at pulling the “weeds”. Mullein is what is called a ‘pioneer species’ in the natural vegetative cycle - they proliferate in disturbed ground for a reason. Of course you don’t need a whole field of it for herbal uses but they have their role in revegetation that should be managed rather than just trying to eliminate them.

Your videos make me thing about life and how different we all live it. One goes fast pace in London (I did that as well), one lives a slow life in the mountains (like you). I am now in Tuscany and the goal is to life slowly in the Tuscan countryside one day not far from now. The slower the life, the better if you ask me. I need time to stay aware of what is going on around me and be able to appreciate the small things which I wasn't able to see while living in London. Great video Isa, very inspiring!

It's okay to get one of those Harbor Freight log splitters for $150 bucks to do all that wood splitting for you, it makes it easy. Also the weed thing, pretty sure home depot sells those weed puller tools that you step on and twist and it pulls the weeds out really easy.
@khrystynalyra2 жыл бұрын
Actually every weed can be used to do something, for example nettles are a great source of iron if eaten or drinken as a tea, and a powerful fertilizer if left in water for a couple days.
@piperlynne12 жыл бұрын
You should get a dump wagon instead of using a wheelbarrow. I always had trouble using a heavy wheelbarrow and then I got a wagon that will hold over 600lbs and I can easily pull it and it doesn't tip as easily as a wheelbarrow does. When you need to dump it you just unlatch and lift it a bit and it will dump out the load. It's also really good for loading wood and moving it around because you can fit more wood in it.
@RTCPhotoWork2 жыл бұрын
Those weeds by the house were under the water spigot. You're going to have them continually come up there because it gets watered regularly. The ground cover will help for sure.

for heating, you should look into biomass stoves. The 'biomass' is a clay layer of insulation around the exhaust pipe for the stove, and will radiate heat for days after burning wood in the stove. This means that you need to burn a fraction of the wood you typically would.
