@Isaac13 Abraham The letter to the Hebrews might contradict your assumption. The writings of the 4 Gospels were dates to at the latest 85 years after Christ. The writings of the next most textually supported ancient writing after the Bible was Homer’s Iliad. Many thousands of Christian scripture copies from within the first 100 years, with mainly “spelling” errors as Dr BE said in video. The Iliad had a little over 600 copies, but written centuries later. You’re right Hebrew scriptures were very accurately transcribed. Christians have never argued against that.

In both accounts/stories, Jesus is rejected as a synagogue teacher in Nazareth by the people of his hometown because they knew or believed he wasn't qualified for the task. In the Matthew version of events, their rejection was due to the fact that Joseph was a carpenter and, thus wasn't from an educated class that would have learned these skills to pass on to Jesus. Added with the fact that the majority of of people in the ancient world (85 - 95% estimates) at the times of Jesus, were illiterate. Those who were literate, were from wealthy, elite, upperclass families. Jesus meanwhile, is depicted as not coming from a high social class, from the small and unwealthy town of Nazareth. There is no evidence to suggest that Jesus had access to education that was not available to his social class. The Bible doesn't make any mention of how he could've learned. The story of Jesus reading from the scriptures can be interpreted as "God providing Jesus with the ability to read without having learned." But then that is a supernatural claim that can't be proven as fact anyway, like many other Biblical claims and stories.

There were other larger villages nearby, and the capital - Sepphoris - was only 3.7 miles away. It's a funny thing that as a Christian I really don't mind the fact that there are differences in the gospels giving varying accounts. The fundamental story is the tread that runs through it, one of Gods mercy, love and grace. I do think though that every scene captured and written down in the bible is meant to be there, every word is valuable and to be discussed, read through and eventually for each person to have an individual revelation of Jesus. I would put a hard stop to the writing of all the gospels at 70 AD. the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem is such a big event to be missed by any writer of the gospel but all the writers of the new testament seem to be unaware of this big event. That passage is almost universally considered to be a later addition to the gospels. However, the passage in Luke where Jesus reads from the scroll of Isaiah is definitely original to that gospel, and tells us that Jesus was able to read Hebrew (though it doesn't tell us about his literacy in Greek or Aramaic).

Well actually a story in both Matthew and Mark present conflicting accounts on the subject of Jesus' literacy. In both accounts/stories, Jesus is rejected as a synagogue teacher in Nazareth by the people of his hometown because they knew or believed he wasn't qualified for the task. In the Matthew version of events, their rejection was due to the fact that Joseph was a carpenter and, thus wasn't from an educated class that would have learned these skills to pass on to Jesus. Added with the fact that the majority of of people in the ancient world (85 - 95% estimates) at the times of Jesus, were illiterate. Those who were literate, were from wealthy, elite, upperclass families. Jesus meanwhile, is depicted as not coming from a high social class, from the small and unwealthy town of Nazareth. There is no evidence to suggest that Jesus had access to education that was not available to his social class. The Bible doesn't make any mention of how he could've learned. The story of Jesus reading from the scriptures can be interpreted as "God providing Jesus with the ability to read without having learned." But then that is a supernatural claim that can't be proven as fact anyway, like many other Biblical claims and stories.

I used to be an atheist, however the Power of the Holy Spirit touched me few years back without and preaching from anyone. I used to recall believing anything an expert atheist would say without doing the research myself, or believing random youtubers who debunk the reality of Jesus Christ by misreperestig, wether they do it intentionally or not. I pray for the conversion of the atheists of the world. By that way, I am not saying that someone who believes in Jesus is better than anyone else (I met some "interesting" Christians myself) however what I am saying is that once you walk the path of Light you can't go back to darkness. Very good stream so far (not finished yet). Just a few thoughts: 1. On the claim that John and Peter were illiterate (which it seems that verse really says). Is it plausible to suggest that they were initially illiterate in that time (which was within a very short time after the ascension) but had learned to read and write by the time they wrote their gospels and epistles (which was at least 20-30 years later)? Considering the fact that they were the highest regarded preachers of the gospel and would have known many highly educated people (such as Paul, who was a member of the Sanhedrin, and Luke, who was a medical doctor) who could have taught them to read and write in that time period. 2. It seems that Ehrman suggested that the virgin birth was legendary development since only two of the gospels (Matthew and Luke) includes it. But it then seems that he says that these two were later gospels, which suggests that he believes that John was one of the earlier gospels. Firstly, I have never heard someone claim that John is not the latest of the four gospels. Secondly, I am certain that I heard him claim that the bigger emphasis on Jesus's divinity in John is due to legendary development since John is the latest gospel. So is John the early, unembellished gospel or the late embellished gospel? This shows that claims like virgin birth and divinity in the Bible cannot be ascribed to legendary development. 3. If Son of God was a term to which was applied to Israelite kings, why did the Jews felt horrified because of blasphemy when Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of God or the Son of Man? This definition of Son of God does not seem to add up. 4. If Jesus was so shocked about His own crucifixion why is it reported numerous times in the gospels that He predicted His death and resurrection? Also, why does He appear so disturbed as He prays in the garden of Gethsemane together with His calmness when He gets arrested and is undergoing trial? 5. This guy's laugh cracks me up!🤣

I enjoyed watching that and found it quite entertaining! What disappointed me most, was not Bart's distortion of the Christian message, but his clever way of avoiding saying anything contrary to Islam or the Quran, even though he will be well aware of the fabrications of both! My "take away" from this is that Bart is more concerned about avoiding any 'trouble' with Muslims, than he is about giving an honest educated opinion about Islam and the Quran, however much predicated with a disclaimer of "I'm not an expert in Islam or the Quran". He could have given an educated opinion on for instance the difference between Jesus's teachings and message, from that found in the Quran, or the differences between the documented Jesus and the documented Mohammed....but he avoided doing so, because he wanted to remove himself from any criticism for giving such an opinion. Where he did give an opinion, these were so carefully crafted as to not contradict anything Islamic, that his opinions on this were virtually USELESS! - I think Bart should have been a Politician as with his Diplomatic skills, he would have excelled in any TV or Press interview, with these tactics!

What Bart claims, and he may be right, is that the 4 canonical gospels may have been in a certain way distorted, based on the assumption that oral traditions have tendency to be somehow distorted and the 4 canonical christians gospels are based in oral traditions. But , this said, there's no clear proof on that issue. Moreover the quran has also some material collected from the apochryphal christian gospels and these are much less accurate than the 4 canonical gospels because they were written much later.

A more honest and factual summary of what Bart Erhman said: 1. Bart Erhman agrees that the Quran is perfectly preserved and that the bible has thousands of differences. Some of which can affect the understanding of a passage, book or of the entire New Testament. Bart believes that a book being perfectly preserved doesn’t prove that it is true, but this is what you would expect an atheist to say. Or else he would already have converted to islam. Conclusion: The Quran is perfectly preserved and the bible isn’t just like what islam teaches. 2. As Bart Ehrman said in that time the majority of the people couldn’t read or write and were a oral people, so Jesus (pbuh) would have conveyed his teachings/book orally. This is similar to the Quran to a certain extent. The Quran was already written in the time of the prophet, but was not yet compiled in to a single book. Basically during the life time of Jesus pbuh he and his followers viewed Jesus pbuh as a human prophet and they only worshiped one God (no trinity) but after the (so called) resurrection people started worshipping Jesus pbuh as god not as the only true God, but as a lesser god. Bart Erhman also refutes John 1:1 and says that early Christians did not believe that Jesus pbuh was pre-existing as god. 7. Christians later corrupted the meaning of Son of God, what a surprise. In early Christianity Son of God referred to someone who was in a close relationship with God and through whom God mediated his will. In other words a prophet of God. The king of Israel was also called Son of God. 8. Bart Erhman says that there were some gospels that were written earlier than the 4 gospels, but they don’t exist anymore. 9. 6 of the 13 epistles written by Paul are now doubted by the scholars. These scholars believe that 6 of those epistles were written by unknown persons claiming to be Paul. Bart Erhman agrees with those scholars, which again proves how unreliable the bible is. 10. Islam teaches that there are some things in the bible that can be true and we muslims can accept, but we don’t rely on the bible. 11. Before the fourth century there were many different view of what was true Christianity there was also different gospels, this was rooted out by emperor Constantine when he became a Christian. He established Christianity as how we know it now. Around this time it was also decided which books to keep in the bible and which should be thrown out. Even after this there were still difference among Christians until this day. 12. According to Bart Erhman Jesus pbuh did not predict prophet Muhammed pbuh, but also according to Bart Erhman Jesus pbuh did not expect to be crucified which already refutes a lot of the teachings of Christianity. 13. As Dr Ehrman said, he's an atheist (as am I), so clearly he doesn't think that Christianity is true, though the New Testament carries true indications of how people thought about Jesus in the first hundred years. I also have no doubt that that the representation of Jesus in the Muslim tradition is historically unsupportable.

On oral traditions, the Gunditjmara from Australia have an oral tradition about a mountain spitting fire and local rivers moving. They incorporate this into their local beliefs and legends, but recently it was discovered that the mountain was an active volcano that erupted 37,000 years ago. Their knowledge of the past path of the river was also surprisingly accurate. I'm not saying that this makes all oral traditions true, but that it certainly gives credence to the idea that oral traditions contain at least a grain of truth. It certainly suggests that many legends may have been originally based on real world events

I respect Dr.Ehram's knowledge of the gospel. but I don't understand when he says at 26:38 when he says that Jesus didn't expect to get crucified contradicts that Jesus foretold him to go to Jerusalem and the Chief priest would get a hold of him and hand over to be killed and be raised again which is reported in all 4 gospels. Bart Ehrman says foolish things like this all the time, and if you put him under scrutiny, he won't defend his wacky claims.

Bart Ehrman is hilarious, maybe this will stop Muslims from quoting him, but I doubt it. I still disagree with the way he categorizes the gospels, any lay person can see the difference between the writing styles of the gospel and mythical works of antiquity. He keeps suggesting (perhaps to himself) that the gospel writers were some how bound to truth, while deifying a figure they already viewed as divine. As a Muslim, i would like to thank AP for showing me how Bart Erhman affirms certain fundamental beliefs in Islam to be more historical about Jesus, than what is believed in mainstream Christianity today. I can't believe your war of showing BE disagrees with Islam is by asking him if he accepts certain aspects of Islamic theology - even though he's an atheist. (Was Jesus Muslim; did he prophecy Muhammad; did he bring a scripture?)...childish stuff. Muslims don't literally expect this. 1. Firstly, Islam does NOT teach that the Gospel is a book or scripture. It teaches that the Gospel was a revelation. There are two mentioned together in the Quran about revelation - the Book and the Wisdom. Concerning Jesus, the Quran says (3:48): "And He will teach him the Book and wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel". The Book is the Torah, and the Gospel is the wisdom associated with the understanding of the Book. In a parallel manner, we see the same thing with regard to the prophet Muhammad in Quran (2:129): "Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise." and Quran (62:2): "It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom - although they were before in clear error". The Book mentioned here is the Quran; it is the verbatim word of God inscribed as a book. And the Wisdom is that which the prophet was inspired with and verbally taught which explains the Quran - as is found the Sunnah (Hadiths). Ibn Kathir states of Q 2:129: "(and Al-Hikmah) meaning, the Sunnah, as Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Muqatil bin Hayyan and Abu Malik asserted. It was also said that `Al-Hikmah', means `comprehension in the religion',". That's why both the Gospel teachings and the Sunnah were passed down in a similar way through oral tradition and then written down; so prophetic wisdom is the more parallel revelation to the Gospel. And the Gospels obviously show the he wasn't carrying a book, but preaching the Gospel (Mark 4:23). 2. Muslims have the same beliefs as the earliest followers; of course they wouldn’t have all Islamic beliefs because some beliefs are only mentioned in the Quran (so much for your silly “Muslim” question). As Erhman says; they believed he was human; didn't use ''son of God' in a divine sense; believed he was a prophet, a teacher inspired by God, and The Messiah. This is exactly what Muslims believe, not that he's divine, that he came to die for sins and was resurrected to prove it as Christians do today. 3. Paul joins the early followers lead by James 7 years after this event and teaches different teachings. Professor James D Tabor of Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity notes this, and says that basic Islamic belief seems to be in line with what early community and James believed; hence why this savior & grace narrative is not found the Book of James; James as a figure is more authoritative than Paul on Jesus and even appears to be arguing against his claim of being saved by faith alone. He writes in his book, The Jesus Dynasty, page 315-316, that Islamic teachings “is precisely what we find emphasized in the Book of James. Like Islam, the book of James, and the teaching of Jesus in Q, emphasize doing the will of God as a demonstration of one's faith. [….] there is little about the view of Jesus presented in this book (The Jesus Dynasty) that conflicts with Islam’s basic perception”. Bearing in mind after Paul’s conversion, he left this group to preach his own Gospel around Asia Minor for a whole 10 years, then returned back to James and Peter. 4. The crucifixion goes in line with the Quran + the early disciples’ belief in it. The Quran states that it was made to ‘appear’ as so; whether it was someone else is a different question. So the fact history documents Jesus as being crucified is not a contradiction. 5. Erhman did NOT say the NT is “mostly authentic” - he said it is the oldest most reliable material, but contains both truth and falsehood which needs to deciphered which is also what Muslims believe. Paul influences the rest of the Gospels; his letters are written by him and his followers and the Gospels are written by followers afterwards, but by drawing on the existing oral traditions about Jesus which also contain historical information as did other Gospel writers. The Gospels were canonized by authorities in confirmation of their Pauline beliefs - not based on historiography - and the others burned and gotten rid of. This attitude continues over Christian history, and Martin Luther reading the Book of James, notices the differences and wishes to literally remove it from the Bible as non-canonical because of its lack of conformity, despite it being material attributed to the leader of the early followers - James ! 6. Paul emphasized that Jesus had died on the cross to atone for sins and was resurrected on the third day; a theology traceable back to Mithraism by the way. He mentions this resurrection as being spiritual 1 Corinthians 44-46; 2 Corinthians 5:16; also in 1 Peter 3:18 - but what is striking is that tradition mentioned in the Gospel of Luke 24:37-41 that Jesus returned after the crucifixion to his followers as a physical body - and not as a spirit - and eats fish to demonstrate this. This is contrary to Paul’s resurrection claim, and to interestingly shows a plausibility of Jesus demonstrating that he didn’t die on the cross and wasn’t in resurrected form. 7. The remnant beliefs of James’ following can be found in the early Jewish Christians also called Ebionites, can be preserved in Islamic teachings to have most correct basic facts about him. Other than the crucifixion (a miracle unbeknownst to anyone besides Jesus himself), it is Paul’s attachment of a significance to this via his Hellenistic background that prevails and shapes Christianity. Is it a coincidence that Islam resonates with an earlier more authoritative figure? Maybe next time you can ask him on the relationship between Paul & James in relation to history, that should be interesting!
